BUtUan City––the World Medical Relief, Inc. has donated 10 pacemakers worth P10 million to the city government of Butuan and assured that more as-sistance for the Butuan Medical Center will be coming by January next year.

In a turn-over ceremony at the city hall grounds here on Monday, WMRI president and chief execu-tive officer George Samson and ambassador of Health Dr. David Zarate said that aside from the pacemakers, a PEt Ct Scanner worth $1.2 million or P60 million was due to arrive here by January 2013.

the pacemakers com-prised the third batch of donations from the WMRI.

M a y o r F e r d i n a n d amante, Jr, in his accep-tance speech, conveyed his gratitude to Samson and Zarate for the “overwhelm-ing support” that WMRI has continuously extended to the city. He said “We should be thankful that out of the hundreds of hospitals in the country, the WMRI chose our Butuan Medical Center. With these and previous donations, we are now better equipped to take care of our sick especially the less fortunate.”

Panlungsod led by Vice-Mayor lawrence lemuel Fortun passed a resolu-tion proclaiming Samson as Honorary Butuanon in recognition of his valu-able contribution to the improvement of the local government’s medical ser-vices to its people.

amante and Fortun pre-sented to Samson a plaque made from Magkono wood where inscribed the presi-dent and CEO of WMRI as Honorary Butuanon during the turn-over rite.

Samson said that more WMRI assistance and sup-port were forthcoming and

that “things are just start-ing to get better for the Butuanons.” He assured that WMRI will continue to include Butuan City in its mission to serve the sick and the poor..

He said the PEt Ct Scanner is the most ad-vanced version in identify-ing even the most undetect-able cancer cells. “When the Scanner arrives and used in Butuan Medical Center, it would be just the second of its kind in the whole Philippines the only other hospital that has this is St. luke’s Medical Center in Manila,” Samson revealed.

Following the ceremo-ny, Samson and Zarate proceeded to the Butuan Medical Center to check what other medical equip-ment and supplies were needed and gave their word to provide in subsequent shipments.

WMRI had delivered in January, 2011 and July, 3012 P40 million worth of medical supplies and equipment for the Butuan Medical Center consisting of beds, cushions, wheel-chairs, crutches, disposable diapers, gauzes, and others. WItH REPORt BY DIana GEnERalaO, CMO/PIO

añonuevo aFP, Commander, 4th Infantry “Diamond” Division said, “In behalf of the whole 4ID, I would like to extend our condolences to the family of our Caa. We are really saddened by the death of Caa Dejado who is unarmed during the murder, especially now that it is ‘Christmas season.’

‘I have ordered all unit Commanders in the area to

be extra vigilant in all their actions and always be mind-ful of the security of their troops,’ añonuevo added.

lt. Col. Eugenio Julio C Osias IV (Inf) Pa, 4ID Spokesperson said that George Madlos or Ka Oris ‘declaration’ of ceasefire in places where there are vic-tims of typhoon Pablo is a pure lie and propaganda.

Think A Minute

Jhan Tiafau Hurst

tHInK a minute.a social worker named

Margaret Sangster saw a young boy in a poor ghetto of a big city.

He had been hit by a car months earlier. His legs were so badly broken and twisted that he couldn’t walk.

this boy was not even part of Margaret’s job and responsibility, but she took him to a doctor who oper-ated on the boy’s legs.

two years later this young boy was completely healed!

He walked into the of-fice of Margaret Sangster to thank her for changing his life.

naturally she was so happy to see him finally

Learning to walk

walking and living a nor-mal life.

Years later, Margaret was telling this story to some other social workers.

She asked them where they thought that boy was today as a young man. they each thought, and asked if he was a teacher now?

Or a doctor? Maybe even a social worker like Marga-

ret. But Margaret, trying to keep from crying, said: “this young man is now in jail for a terrible, evil crime!

You see, I helped him walk again, but there was no one there to teach him where to walk and how to live right!”

Many people and exam-ples around us are showing us how to live.

Sometimes it’s hard for us to know who to follow in life.

there’s really only one Person Who can heal and change your life perma-nently for good.

You see, Jesus Christ will not only show you how to live, but He will also give you the power to do it. then, you can finally start living the good life you want and were created to enjoy.

But you and I must first choose to stop living our way and start living Jesus’ way—24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

It’s a choice you’ll never regret for the rest of your life.

Just think a Minute.

The ‘end of the world’ prophecyDECEMBER 21, 2012, the end of the world. So, what? Who is afraid if today or tomorrow the world ends? For the impoverished people, like us (me), there is no tomorrow. We lived one at a time, so to speak. Our everyday life is a struggle. We could hardly eat three square meals a day. We die every second of the day. thus, thinking about tomorrow or the future is not of importance to us. the poor have nothing to lose.

If anyone is afraid that this world would end, it is the rich and the famous. the wealthy have so much at stake. the wealthy have everything to lose. It is their worldly possessions that the rich could not afford to lose.

Simply, greed and power are ingredients that influen-tial people want to cling no matter what it takes. Once life on Earth ends, it would also mean losing everything that the rich claimed they have acquired through hard work. Do you believe it?

While the rich and the powerful are obsessed with wealth and the comfort of living, another group of people is equally anxious of their wealth and material comfort. this group of people loves the limelight of intrigues,

controversy, and corruption. they thrived with hard stomachs, calloused lies, and empty promises. they are the politicians. Fortunate.

Politicians never care if the world would tear into pieces. they do not care even pollutants would poison the whole world and humankind is annihilated. after all, when everything is lost on Earth, politicians would survive. Politicians are like cockroaches. Cockroaches are the only known creatures that survived with the nuclear explosions in Hiroshima and nagasaki in Japan during WWII.

Cunning, shrewdness, and exploitative are qualities of politicians that made them survived in the arena of political fracas. a politician lived in the emptiness of tomorrows and the future.

they promised everything to conquer unwitting preys. at one time, a politician would shower an individual, groups, and organizations that the material world they could offer. Such a ploy is a deceptive trick that an initi-ated student of politics could easily detect.

End of the world? a politician would simply shrug a shoulder. Who cares? now it can be truly said that the impoverished masses of our people are not afraid of the world’s demise. In contrast, the rich, the famous, and the politicians are cowering in fear because of their greedi-ness and selfishness. React [email protected]

BEInG a nation in tropical climate, like Indonesia, has got used to getting in touch with some natural disasters. Most nations have seen the tsunami that occurred and devastated north Suma-tra, Indonesia exactly on December 26, 2004. then, every December in the fol-lowing years, some news concerning disaster has still colored the media.

While this article is now being written, the tV news on the text streaming in-forming that 5.2 Richter of earthquake has just oc-curred in Pacitan city, East Java, the province where I am now dwelling. the weather, raining, and flood in Indonesia areas have been covered by tV news and newspapers.

However, so far there has not been a serious at-tempt by both government and private agencies that are focused on the training related to disaster manage-ment. this management is actually good for the

communities living in the natures prone to disasters. this is due to some benefits that can be derived from such training when com-munities are acknowledged with this management.

During the year of 2006, there was always seminar or conference with the theme on disaster management or discussion related to it. I just guess that during that year was about two years after the tsunami, devastating the north Sumatra, Indonesia.

Most activists, communi-ties, scientists were busy with such activities dealing with the way to cope with disasters.

that was about six years ago. So far, after six years the plight has passed by through the times, topics related to disaster management has disappeared. this is the common phenomenon that human beings have been in their way of life. this can be reacted both positively and negatively.

Positively, as human be-ings, we have got used to living with the nature and its given characteristics. that is for the panacea of such a deviating behavior. Yet, negatively, as human beings living in disastrous regions, we might be con-sidered ignorant of what our close environments have happened.

In terms of being serious in behaving towards our close environment, initia-tives should be done. Such initiatives can be in the

efforts by the government or private agencies being not only responsive but importantly more proactive towards the nature and its characteristics.

One of the examples was that the continuous measure for avoiding the impact of disasters or other calamities. Seminars and conference on disaster management that was prevailingly done dur-ing 2006 should have been followed up with some real programs.

Yet, mostly human being tend to be reactive when and after the calamity happens. Very rare people have the follow ups of what have been done and planned. let alone the attempts of being proactive towards the un-expected natural disasters. this is what have become the typical human beings living in developing and underdeveloped countries.

In order to cope with the nature prone to disaster, government and other

values by living the vir-tues of fortitude, prudence and perseverance.

“as new Christ ian couples, we should exer-cise restraint coupled with calmness and controlled emotions when we deal with each other. Place God in the center of your mar-ried lives,” Mrs Brown further urged the couples.

Of the 55 couples, 46 belong to Service Partners Inc. (SPI), three from En-visage Security agency Inc (ESaI), while six were attached to a Brown’s subsidiaries. SPI serves as the manpower service provider of aBCI while ESaI is aBCI’s security provider.

SPI President Yolanda M. leon likewise shared during the reception pro-gram a piece of advice to the newlyweds: “put the fire out rather than fan the fire whenever things run out of control. If one gets mad, the other should stay calm, that’s the way to long and lasting relationship.”

for second reading.“If the President is se-

rious in eradicating cor-ruption in government, he should certify the Freedom of Information bill as ur-gent,” the young lawmaker said. “the President and his allies in the House should prioritize the passage of the bill for the sake of account-ability and transparency.”

House Majority Floor leader and Mandaluyong City Rep. neptali “Boyet” Gonzales was quoted as saying that the proposed measure would have to take a back seat, as lawmakers have to fast-track discus-sions on the controversial Reproductive Health (RH) Bill, which was approved on third reading Monday.

according to Gonzales, the equally controversial FoI bill could be discussed when Congress resumes session on January 21 next year.

Ejercito Estrada noted that 17 Senators were able to approve the FoI bill on third and final reading, just two days before lawmakers go on a Christmas break.

In a statement, the Una senatorial candidate thanked the Senators who “courageously voted” to approve the bill on third reading.

“thank you for heed-ing the call of the public to make the government more transparent and ac-countable,” Ejercito Estrada said. “the passage of the FoI bill is crucial for the good governance thrust of the government and its battle against corruption.”

“I am very happy that we can finally build the coconet weaving factory here in Iligan City… in las Piñas, we started our livelihood projects 10 years ago because it star ted f looding in our area… people from las Piñas [I was congresswoman then] told me that we should take care of our river, we need to make it deeper so that it will not overf low,” she added.

She said: “the problem was deeper than expected, as they began to dig on the river, they have found out that residents threw their garbage into the river.”

“Kung pagbawalan kaya sila, sumunod kaya sila? I don’t think so, kaya nagiba kami nang strategy, sabi ko, kailangan itong mga basura na ‘to, ipaprocess na pagkabuhayan nang tao... nagsimula kami sa journey namin sa pag-gawa nang l ivel ihood projects na galing sa ba-sura [If we tell them not to (throw garbage), would they listen? I don’t think so, we changed our strat-egy, I told them that we should process these gar-bage and turn them into a source of livelihood… we started our journey in giving livelihood projects with garbage],” said the former lawmaker.

this venture lead into several more livelihood projects over the years, and the most recent is coconet weaving.

Vil lar enthused that “isa pong inventor, dating propesor sa bicol uni-versity ang nakaimbento

nyang decorticating ma-chine, pagipinasok mo dyan yung waste coconut husks, naghihiwalay po yung fiber, yun ay ma-we-weave niyo into coconet”

the inventor of the decorticating machine is a former professor of Bicol University, when you put waste coconut husks; it separates the fiber [from the husk] and that’s what you weave into coconet.

“the coconets that the families will produce will be used as r ip raps or slope protection for roads and highways that will be developed in northern Mindanao. It can provide t hem w it h susta inable income,” Vil lar further states.

Coconet is an alterna-tive for use in rip raps instead of cement and is 80% cheaper than cement.

O n e d e c o r t i c a t i n g machine can employ 40 fami l ies and Mrs. Vi l-lar says that when the families start producing income, that income can also lead to the buying of yet another decorticating

machine thus employing another 40 families.

Mrs. Villar also mused to the housewives that: “maraming nagtatanong sa akin, bakit daw ako mahal na mahal ni Senator Manny Villar, wala naman hindi naman ako beauty queen, tuwang-tuwa siya sa akin... kasi tinutulungan ko siyang maghanapbu-hay... kaya kayo tulungan niyo ang mga asawa niyong maghanapbuhay para lalo kayong mahalin nang in-yong mga asawa...”

Many are asking why Senator Manny Villar loves me very much, I’m not even a beauty queen, and yet he’s very happy with me… that’s because I help him make a living... that’s why you should help your husbands in making a liv-ing so that they will love you even more.

according to Vil lar, coconet weaving is the easiest source of income in las Piñas and that she finds no reason that the beneficiaries of Sta. Elena in Iligan will not succeed in this venture.

private agencies re-l ate d to t h i s problem should do hand in hand for having the planned and created clear pro-g r a m s . C o m m u n i t i e s l iving in the nature in this condition should be made aware of their own environments. they also need to be provided with some knowledge related to the strategy how to cope with their lives.

Disaster management can be trained at least making the communities aware of what to do and how to react when liv-ing in the nature prone to disasters. they must not be ignored of having their lives being always threatened by the unex-pected disasters.

‘Pinoys’ reason to smile this Christmas

FIlIPInO boxing champ, nonito Donaire, Jr., on Wednesday hopes that his stunning win over Mexican boxing icon Jorge arce over the weekend would give Filipinos something to cheer about this Christmas as the country struggles to repair the damage caused by typhoon “Pablo” early in the month.

the champion, who arrived from the United States early Wednesday, also thanked anew the Filipinos who prayed for his win over arce in Houston, texas last weekend.

“I did everything I could. Christmas is coming and hopefully Filipinos have something to smile about. I hope I gave them a reason to smile,” he said in a television interview.

last Sunday, Donaire did the country proud by knocking out arce into retirement, at a time Filipinos were badly in need of good news.

His win came a week after Filipino boxing icon and Sarangani Rep. Emmanuel “Manny” Pacquiao was knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez.

Donaire said he was dedicating his fight not just to Filipino boxing fans but also those affected by the calamity.

“I’m dedicating this fight to all who supported me and to those affected by calamities,” he said.
