Drs. Richard and Bruce Winter

Dear Dr. Winter, I have seen your dentures on yourwebsite and they look amazing! My problem is that Ihave had my dentures made 3 times and they still hurt

and rock! I have asked the dentist repeatedly to pleasehelp me as I am in pain and must take my dentures out tochew. Can you fix this dentist’s dentures so I don’t haveto pay for another set! Please help me, as I can’t live thisway.

Dear Ann, I am so sorry for your problems. You didnot mention if this was an immediate set of denturesgiven to you the day your other teeth were removed orsimply a replacement for older dentures. There is an artto making dentures and even with tremendous care andskill; denture fabrication is a process that requirespatience. As people live with dentures they experiencecontinued bone loss. There is so much bone loss thatdentures begin to move and may actually slide duringchewing even with using denture adhesives. When teethare removed you actually lose up to 40% of theremaining bone width in the first year after teeth areremoved and you can continue to lose 40-60% of theremaining bone over the next 5 years of denture use!

The solution is to save teeth if possible and if notpractical to place mini-implants or traditional implants topreserve the bone.

Implants preserve bone! That means that over timedentures will not get as loose and you will chew better.

I will get back to your particular problem. Ill-fittingdentures usually require that they be made again fromscratch. It is just too easy to change someone’s dentureand then feel that the changes that were made could havemade your situation worse! So most dentists will want tostart over with new impressions, brand new teeth andmountings to try and remedy the problems you haveexperienced. Trying to make your dentures fit mayactually take longer and cost a tremendous amount of money, which would be wasted if your dentures couldnot be made to be comfortable.

In rare situations, I will work with someone’s olddentures to improve comfort, eliminate denture sores orsimply to create a healthy foundation for making a new

set of dentures. I would have to assess your olddentures to make an evaluation of how close they are toideal and the status of your bite and how your teeth fittogether for optimal chewing. Then I could decide if wecan do anything with your current set of teeth.

We would be happy to perform a second opinion orimplant consultation to our readers! Please call us at414-464-9021 to schedule your visit.

Please visit our website atwww.hamptondentalassociates.com to view photos, videos and testimonials of our work! Please visit us onfacebook at Hampton Dental Associates and like us forfun articles and Ask the Dentists columns and Dr.Winter’s articles on implant and reconstructivedentistry.

The dawn of a new calendar yearoften marks the end of the sometimeshectic holiday season. This time of year marks a return to normalcy formany families, as the kids go back toschool and parents return to work.

The beginning of January alsoserves as a great time to start prepar-ing for tax season. While the deadline

to file returns may be several monthsaway, getting a head-start allows menand women the chance to organizetheir tax documents so they aren't rac-ing against a deadline come April. Thefollowing are a handful of ways to startpreparing for your returns now.

• Find last year's return. You willneed information from last year'sreturn in order to file this year, so findlast year's return and print it out if you plan to hire a professional to workon your return.

• Gather dependents' information. While you might know your own SocialSecurity number by heart, if you havedependents, you're going to need theirinformation as well. New parents oradults who started serving as their eld-erly parents' primary caretakers overthe last year will need their kids' andtheir folks' social security numbers. If you do not have these numbers uponfiling, your return will likely be

delayed and you might even be deniedpotentially substantial tax credits.

• Gather your year-end financialstatements. If you spent the last yearinvesting, then you will have to paytaxes on any interest earned. Interestearned on the majority of savingsaccounts is also taxable, so gather allof your year-end financial statements

from your assorted accounts in oneplace. Doing so will make filing yourreturn, whether you do it yourself orwork with a professional, go morequickly.

• Speak with your mortgage lender.Homeowners should receive forms doc-umenting their mortgage interest pay-ments for the last year, as the moneypaid in interest on your home or homesis tax deductible. If these forms are notreceived in a timely manner, speakwith your lender. You might even beable to download them from yourlender's secure website.

• Make a list of your charitablecontributions. Charitable contribu-tions, no matter how small, are taxdeductible. While it's easiest to main-tain a list of all charitable donationsyou make as the year goes on, if youhave not done that, then you canmake one now. Look for receipts of allcontributions, contacting any charities

you donated to if you misplaced anyreceipts.

• Book an appointment with your

tax preparation specialist now. As April15 draws closer, tax preparers' sched-ules get busier and busier. The earlieryou book your appointment, the morelikely you are to get a favorable timefor that meeting. In addition, if you

have gathered all of the infoyou need by early February, theing your appointment early me

can file earlier and receive anyyou might be eligible for thaquicker.

Tax season might not baround the corner, but it's neearly to start preparing your re

As of January 1, 2016, a newWisconsin state law requires an indi-vidual selling a privately-owned motorvehicle to another private party toreport that sale to the WisconsinDepartment of Transportation(WisDOT) within 30 days of the sale. Tohelp state residents, WisDOT has devel-oped an online service where sellers

can conveniently submit their noticeof sale electronically. Seller Notify isavailable at

wisconsindmv.gov/SellerNotify."We understand this is a new

process for private-to-private sellers,"said Mitchell Warren, director of Vehicle Services. "Our goal is to makethis as easy as possible for them tocomply with the new law." Thisrequirement does not apply to busi-nesses buying or selling vehicles or

motor vehicle dealers, Warren said.Private motor vehicle sellers canreport the sale in three steps through

Seller Notify. This online tool alsoenables the seller to print a receipt, email a copy, or save the recordedinformation for their records. Sellerscan also report the sale by completingand submitting a WisDMV form (MV2870) by mail or at a local DMV servicecenter.

The Seller Notify system was

designed to be compatible with mobiledevices and desktop computers. Sellerscan use their preferred platform

The Department of PublicInstruction is filling a void in the worldof educational materials thanks to acollaborative project involving DPI staff and more than a dozen authors fromaround Wisconsin. The video series, called “Wisconsin Writes,” featureswalk-throughs of the writing process byeach author and a look at their typicalwork day.

Each author who agreed to partici-pate appears in two types of videos.

First, they demonstrate their writingprocess by moving forward on an actualpiece they were working on. The secondelement, a straightforward interview, gives students advice on writing and asense of what it’s all about. The DPI’sMarci Glaus, an English language artseducation consultant, visited writers intheir usual writing spaces to provide anauthentic look at habits, techniques, and environments of this group thathas so much to offer students. Featuredwriters include two New York Times BestSellers, the state’s poet laureate, chil-dren’s authors, writers of non-fiction,fiction, and other Wisconsin-basedwriters.

“For our students to graduate readyfor career and college – no matter whatthey pursue – they need writing andother literacy skills,” said StateSuperintendent Tony Evers. “I appreci-ate that so many of our state’s profes-sional writers share this sentiment andwere willing to show their writingprocess and workspace,” Evers said.“How better to learn these skills thanfrom their fellow Wisconsinites who

have built a successful career aroundthem?”

“Wisconsin Writes” began this fall,

with installments released approximate-ly biweekly. Videos released so far fea-ture the following authors (an examplepublished title for each including):
