The City of Milwaukee has been award-ed a $1 million state grant for the develop-ment of Reed Street Yards, a water technol-ogy business park now under constructionadjacent to the Global Water Center.

In addition, the Wisconsin EconomicDevelopment Corporation (WEDC) hasagreed to provide up to $2 million in statetax credits to Rexnord Corp. to support thecompany’s relocation of its Zurn Industriessubsidiary to Reed Street Yards. The reloca-

tion is expected to create 120 new jobs. The WEDC grant to the city will be usedto help fund environmental site work andgeotechnical activities on the 17-acre site inthe Menomonee Valley. Once completed,Reed Street Yards, located in Milwaukee’sWalker’s Point neighborhood, will be hometo a mixed-use urban office, educational, research and technology complex that willfocus on the international water industry.

“Reed Street Yards will complement theoutstanding work already taking place atthe nearby Global Water Center and willfurther solidify the position of Milwaukeeand Wisconsin as a world leader in watertechnology,” said Lt. Governor RebeccaKleefisch, who made the announcementwith city and industry officials on Tuesday.“The state is proud to play a key role in mov-

ing this project forward.”“Businesses are choosing Milwaukeebecause it is a great place to grow. Theyrecognize the advantages in our culture of hard work and innovation,” said MilwaukeeMayor Tom Barrett, who joined Kleefisch atthe announcement. “With the combinedresources of the state and the city, we cansmooth the way for companies to locatehere. That adds jobs to our economy andbenefits our entire region.”

Located on the south bank of theMenomonee River, Reed Street Yards isexpected to ultimately house more than 1million square feet of space and will join theGlobal Water Center as the physical hub of an international water technology cluster.Developer Peter Moede and GeneralCapital Group will begin construction laterthis year on a four-story, 80,000-squarefoot multiuse building called Water TechOne. The $20 million building, which has

been designed with uncompromising atten-tion to sustainability and cutting edge water, energy and technology features, is expect-ed to be completed in 2016.

Rexnord Corp. is relocating ZurnIndustries to a 52,000-square-foot stand-alone office building in Reed Street Yards.Construction on that building is expected tobegin this year. WEDC has authorized thecompany to receive up to $2 million in taxcredits. The actual amount of credits thecompany will earn is contingent upon thecompany meeting specific job creation andwage requirements.

“As we establish the Zurn headquartersin Milwaukee, we greatly appreciate thetremendous support that we have receivedfrom both the State of Wisconsin and City of Milwaukee,” said Todd Adams, Rexnord

president and CEO. “Rexnord anticipatescontinued growth and expansion of ourwater businesses as we believe Wisconsinand Milwaukee have created an ecosystemfor water technology companies to accessworld-class talent, innovation and technolo-gy development, as well as research part-nerships that will help shape and addressthe world’s water challenges.”

“This grant is the latest example of WEDC’s role as a strong proponent and a

vital partner in Milwaukee’s growitechnology industry,” said Reed Hatary and CEO of WEDC, the staeconomic development agency. “with many partners, WEDC was intal in the establishment of the GlobCenter in 2013, and Reed Street Yanext chapter in Milwaukee’s evothe unequivocal hub of the water gy industry.”

    Dean Amhaus, president and

Spots on tomatoes, holes in hostaleaves and wilting stems mean insects and

diseases have moved into the garden. Don’tlet these intruders reduce the beauty andproductivity of your landscape. Work inconcert with nature to prevent and controlthese pests and you will be rewarded witha bountiful harvest and landscape filledwith beautiful blooms.

Monitor. Take regular walks throughthe landscape. Not only is it good exer-cise, but it will improve your mood andyou’ll discover problems earlier whenthey are easier to control. Look for discol-ored leaves, spots, holes and wilting.Inspect the underside of the leaves andalong the stems to uncover the cause of the problem.

Identify. Once you discover a prob-lem, identify the culprit. Your local exten-

sion service, garden center or reliableinternet resource can help. Once identi-fied, you can plan the best way to man-age the culprit.

Invite the Good Guys. Toads, lady beetles and birds help control manygarden pests. Attract them to the gardenby planting herbs and flowers to attractbeneficial insects, adding a house for thetoads, and birdbath for songbirds. Avoidusing pesticides and learn to tolerate a bitof damage. A few aphids or caterpillarswill bring in the ladybeetles, lacewings, birds and toads that are looking for ameal.

Clean up. Many insects and dis-eases can be managed and preventedwith a bit of garden cleanup. A strongblast of water from the garden hose willdislodge aphids and mites, reducing theirdamage to a tolerable level. Or knockleaf-eating beetles and other larger

insects off the plants and into a can of soapy water.

Pick off discolored leaves, prune off diseased stems and destroy. Be sure todisinfect tools with 70% alcohol or onepart bleach to nine parts water solutionbetween cuts. This will reduce the risk of spreading the disease when pruninginfected plants.

    Adjust care. Reduce the spread

and risk of further problems by adjustingyour maintenance strategies. Avoid over-head and nighttime watering that canincrease the risk of disease. Use an

organic nitrogen fertilizer like Milorganite(milorganite.com) which encourages slowsteady growth that is less susceptible toinsect and disease attacks.

Mulch the soil with shredded leaves, evergreen needles or woodchips. This willkeep roots cool and moist during drought, improve the soil as they decompose, andalso prevent soil borne diseases fromsplashing onto and infecting the plants.

Non-chemical Controls. If theproblems continue, try some non-chemi-cal options for insects. A yellow bowlfilled with soapy water can attract aphids,a shallow can filled with beer and sunk inthe ground will manage slugs, and crum-pled paper under a flower pot for ear-wigs are just a few ways to trap and kill

these pests.Or cover the plants with floating row

covers. These fabrics allow air, light andwater through, but prevent insects likebean beetles and cabbage worms fromreaching and damaging the plants.

Organic products. Organic prod-ucts like insecticidal soap, Neem, horti-culture oil and Bacillus thuringiensis canbe used to control specific pests. And

even though these are organic, designed to kill insects or diseasisms, so be sure to read and follodirections carefully.

Take Note. Make notes problems and solutions in this garden. Refer to these next yeayou do a better job of monitormanaging garden pests. And whping for new plants, select the rigfor the location and choose resiseties whenever possible.

A little eco-friendly gardeninga long way in creating a beauproductive garden.

The Better Business Bureau ServingWisconsin has received recent reports of phantom debt collectors — callers posing asdebt collectors — and is warning consumersabout the relentless scandal involving fakedebt collection calls.

It usually begins with a telephone callduring which you’re told you owe moneyon a current or old debt you don’t remem-

ber, you paid in the past, or a debt t hat isn’teven yours. Consumers say the callersattempt to collect and often threaten tohave you arrested unless you pay up. Theyare aggressive, intimidating, and very con-vincing.

The callers pose as legitimate debt col-lectors and may even have a few tidbits of personal information, such as the last fourdigits of your Social Security number. Thatdoes not mean it is a legitimate call and thecaller may even ask for more personal orfinancial information as part of the spiel.

“Unfortunately, some victims will payout of fear, even if they believe they paidthe debt, just to stop the harassing calls,”says Ran Hoth, CEO and president. “Insome cases these payments can run into

the hundreds or even thousands of dollars. If you’re not careful, ID theft can be one of the consequences of interacting with a debtscammer.”

Under the Fair Debt CollectionPractices Act, debt collectors may not callbetween 9 pm and 8 am unless you givethem permission to do so. They are alsoprohibited from using abusive, unfair, ordeceptive practices to collect from you, enforced by the Federal Trade Commission(FTC). This will help you with a legitimatedebt collector, but how can you tell if thedebt collection call is legitimate?

Take control - Ask for the caller’sname, company street address and tele-phone number, and say you have nothingelse to discuss until you receive a

Validation Notice which is proof of thedebt and the name of the creditor andamount owed.

Don’t confirm any information— The caller may ask you to verify the lastfour digits of your SSN or ask for banking, date of birth and other information. Don’tconfirm or deny.

Don’t trust caller ID — Caller ID canbe easily manipulated to display whatevername or phone number the scammerschoose.

Call the creditor — The debt may be

legitimate — but if you think the collector isrogue or a criminal- let the company thatyou owe money to know about it.

Report the call —If it is an identifi-able company with a Wisconsin address —file a complaint with BBB.org. If not, file a

complaint with the FTC.For more information or further

inquiries, contact the Wisconsin BBB atwww.bbb.org/wisconsin or 414-847-6000 (metro Milwaukee), 920-734-4352(Appleton), 608-268-2221 (Madison) or
