Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs is challeng-ing recent Milwaukee high school graduates toanalyze the concept of “freedom” for the 7thAnnual Freedom Essay Scholarship Contest. Thescholarship application is now open to currentand recent college bound, high school gradu-ates in Milwaukee. The essay’s topic of “free-dom” will give graduates the opportunity to

reflect on what freedom means to them, and sug-gest (in 1,000 words) what they can do to com-bat and prevent prejudice, discrimination andviolence in our world today. The deadline for thescholarship is Friday, Aug. 7, 2015.

Alderwoman Coggs created the contestwhen she took office as a dedicated investmentin opportunities for students.

Alderwoman Coggs said the scholarshipeffort is continued annually to acknowledge ourstudents thoughts on freedom, and the powerthey have as a youth population to combat theinjustices of our world today. “The scholarshipessay contest is a way for our youth to expresstheir thoughts on freedom, and cultivate thosethoughts into possible leadership roles as stu-dents,” she said.

Two $500 scholarships will be awardedand winning essays may be published,Alderwoman Coggs said.

Applications are available at www.city.mil-waukee.gov/district6, at all city libraries and atmany high schools and colleges–and must bereturned and postmarked by Aug. 7, 2015.

The application is open to students whoreside in Milwaukee and attended a public, pri-vate, parochial, or home school, or who partici-pated in a high school correspondence program

in the City of Milwaukee. Preferencgiven to residents of the 6th District (sewww.city.milwaukee.gov/district6).
