Dear Dr. Winter, when people are searching for a dentistwhat are the things we should look for?

I think that being a professional brings with it aresponsibility for a doctor to seek out and take qualitycontinuing education. As a member of the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Academy of General Dentistrywe try and bring quality continuing education to all thedoctors in Wisconsin. I believe life long learning should beevery dentist's goal. The doctor should find their passionpoints and take education to become proficient in thoseaspects of their profession. One of the topics I lecture toother dentists on is "General Dentistry As A Specialty." Thishighlights the fact that any aspect of general dentistry can belearned at higher levels. An example of this is the extratraining our Dental organizations offer. There is theAcademy of General Dentistry that offers education in the12 subspecialties of dentistry and offers an examinationcalled a Fellowship exam after taking 600 hours of education. This rigorous examination and an additional 400hours of participation courses allow a doctor to attainMastership in the AGD. The quest for Mastership allowedme to learn more in depth techniques and attain a higherlevel of proficiency in all aspects of dentistry.

I recently took parts one and two of a National Boardexamination called the ABOI/ID, which is the AmericanBoard of Oral Implantologists/Implant Dentists. This was atwo day examination with part 1 being an 8 hour writtenexamination and part 2 being defense of cases that werepresented from a pool of cases I submitted and cases theBoard presented.

There were two doctors at each station questioning me oneverything from surgical techniques, emergency situations,prosthetics (crown and bridge implant techniques) and howto handle complications. Attaining these credentials allows adentist to achieve personal satisfaction, professionalsatisfaction and fuels the desire to continue to get better at

their profession.The International Congress of Oral Implantologists isanother organization as is the American Academy of Implant Dentists. These organizations offer courses, tests,oral examinations that allow dentists to document theircases, improve their skills and allow them to sit for examssuch as the ABOI/ID. In order to achieve Diplomate statusin the ICOI a dentist needs to achieve Fellowship andMastership by taking an exam, passing cases that arepresented and then sitting for an oral examination. So theseorganizations offer many ways to engage and test a dentist

and help them attain new skills.The AACD or American Academy of CosmeticDentistry also offers tests and an oral examination processto test dentists in the field of advanced cosmetics.So while there are wonderful specialists such asorthodontists, oral surgeons, etc. it is still incumbent ongeneralists to continue to learn and improve their skills andwork toward perfecting the art and science of dentistry.

Nothing says welcome home more than aninviting entrance. Take a step outside your frontdoor. Does your entrance say welcome? Is thefront door appealing? Is there a mat for peopleto wipe their shoes on? Is there a doorbell ordoorknocker for people to let you know of theirarrival? To find out just how welcoming yourentrance is, pretend you are a visitor. What do

you see? Take some photos. Things tend to look

differently in photos.One of the easiest ways to dress up ahomes entrance is with paint. Could your frontdoor use a new coat of paint? How about yourporch? Before you get the old paint cans out ofthe garage, consider if it is time for an update.Instead of black or brown, maybe you couldtry a bolder color for your front door. Red, blue

or green can make a real statement and pull

visitors eyes immediately to your front door.Add some new hardware to your door and anew coat of paint on the porch floor, and yourentrance will really pop.

Lighting is a must in any entrance. Is yourentrance well lit? If not, perhaps its time to addsome lights, or at the very least, replace theones you have. Exterior lighting comes in awide range of styles and finishes. Brighter,more energy-efficient lighting will do wondersfor your entrance and your pocketbook.

Accessories are another good way to dressup an entrance. A welcome mat is a must tokeep dirt out of the home. A wreath will helpdress up any space, as will statuary and plants.Depending upon how large of a space youhave, you might even be able to add some fur-niture. A bench works great for visitors needingsomeplace to rest their bags while they wait foryou to answer the door.

If you have a path leading up to your frontdoor, you might want to examine that area too.Is there anything you can do to add interest,such as installing lighting or planting someflowers. Anything you can do to dress up thewalkway will add to the welcoming feel of yourhome.

I want to dispel the myth that acne is normal ora right of passage into adulthood that adolescentsmust endure. Acne is a systemic inflammatory dis-ease, all acne is abnormal and truly a window intoour inner health.

What acne is? Acne is a disease of the pores

and sebaceous glands. There are skin cells thatshed inside our pore just like the surface of the skin.Acne begins with inflammation at a cellular level,an over production of oil or sebum, and then toomany skin cells piling up. Those skin cells getjammed inside the pore and plugs it and that iswhen the trouble begins. If the plug gets pushed outto the top of the pore, it oxidizes and therefore exitsas a blackhead . If the pore cannot dispel its con-tents, it becomes trapped, and this is when thenoticeable inflammation occurs and the prolifera-tion of the p.acnes bacteria. This process is the startof the papule, pustule, nodule or cyst. None ofthese are a positive result only leading to morepain, redness, and inflammation; for the acne suf-ferer.

I want to change the way people in Wisconsinface acne treatment and open doors for a new wayto treat your acne. I worked with people of all agesand skin types to help control their chronic inflam-matory disease which is acne. Just like any otherchronic inflammatory disease, it needs to be con-trolled, but unfortunately there is no acne cure.That is just giving someone false hope, but you canmoderate your skin condition just like someone withRheumatoid Arthritis lives with theirs. Acne treat-ment starts with ef fective home care, diet modifica-tions, stress reduction, lifestyle changes, and effec-tive treatment. There is a lot of misinformation onthe internet and on T.V. My job is to help peoplejust like you, who is frustrated with your current skincondition or know of someone whom is.

The most successful acne client is the one readyto move out of their current skin situation, wantingto try something new, and are committed tochange. In order to be successful you need to dothe work, I will guide you, inform you, and give youan at home treatment specific for your type of acne.

Here are ten steps you can do to start on apath to clearer skin:

1.) Get to know the term comedogenic. Thatterm means will clog pores in an acne prone indi-vidual. Get familiar with skin care ingredients youshould avoid on acne prone areas, some examplesare: coconut oil, cocoa butter, algae extract, andsodium chloride. All these skin care ingredients canwreak havoc on acne prone skin. Get to knowwhich ones are pore clogging offenders becausethese are just a few, there are many more.

2.) I want you to know that just because a

product reads on the label noncomedogenic orfor acne prone skin, or oil free it may still havecomedogenic ingredients. As an informed con-sumer, product labels are not regulated by theFDA. An example of this is, Cliniques AcneSolutions skin care and make up, you can view the

offending ingredients on my Pintrest at www.pin-trest.com/skinsuite.3.) I will help you get to know what shampoo,

conditioner and hair products to avoid with acneprone skin. They all contribute to acne if they con-tain pore clogging ingredients in them.

4.) Just because it is natural does not mean itcannot contribute to acne. I recently participated inone of those parties for skin care products from avery popular and very local company. They areperpetuating that petrolatum and mineral oil arepore clogging and it simply isnt true. Base yourknowledge off of research and not off of marketingjargon. Know the facts.

5.) Foods we eat and a poor diet contribute toacne. High glycemic (sugar) and processed foodsare poor choices for all skin types, but particularlythose that are acne prone. There are also studiesfocusing on the correlation between cystic acneand dairy products. Food has a direct impact onthe over all health and flare ups for acne proneindividuals.

6.) Get an adequate amount of sleep. Peoplethat are sleep-deprived and night shift workingindividuals will have a more difficult time maintain-ing clear skin.

7.) Supplements are important to clear skin. Trysupplements like Zinc, Fish oils and Probiotics. Theyall have a positive impact on acne especially theinflamed lesions. Just like helpful supplements thereare some to avoid in food, those are; kelp, algae,chlorella, or Maca Root can be especially trouble-some for acne.

8.) Be patient with your acne treatments andskin care. When I treat a client it can take 90 daysto achieve clearer skin. It takes 90 days for a micro-comedone or lesion to form and time, for the exist-ing lesions to surface. The proper acne home carewill not only address the over-proliferation of deadskin cells and the existing inflammation, it will alsoprevent new lesions from forming. Most acne homecare only addresses the bacterial portion of theproblem, (like Tea Tree oil) and doesnt address theproblem deep inside the pore. Daily consistenthome care and diligence will clear skin faster.Missing one day of treating acne allows morelesions to form.9.) Be kind to your skin and refrain from pick-ing while under direction of an acne specialist.

10.) Get help! Sometimes acne is just way

above what we can treat on our own. We seek aprofessional to clean our homes, change our oil,and other frivolous things, remember you are worthit! I know I spent thousands of dollars on treatmentson the internet, make up and other things toaddress my acne. Please seek help before scarring

occurs, which is almost impossible to reduce.Medications like Accutane have tremendousside effects, and our antibiotics are being overused,neither of which is a cure. As an acne specialist my
