Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi was among Sankara Nethralaya's greatest friends, well wishers and supporters, a great friend Dr. S. S. Badrinath and his philosophy of service with love and a personal touch and his noble objective of eradicating blindness in the country especially through service to the poor and needy, she supported the institution significantly during its formative years. The singing legend gave a string of concerts across the country under the banner 'A Voice for Vision' which created a high level of awareness about the institution and empathy for its cause across the nation, the proceeds of the ticket sale were donated towards supporting the community eye care initiatives of the hospital, in a rare gesture of compassion and generosity she bequeathed the royalty on the sale proceeds of some of her best selling audio records to the nation, her voice continuing to support its cause long after she was no more.

A highly grateful institution and its founder decided to express their love, gratitude and respect for one of the institution's greatest benefactors and immortal singer on her birth centenary falling in year 2016. A total of 12 musical concerts by exponents and maestros in their field of music were organized as 'Musical tributes' to the singing legend. The idea behind these concerts was to 1. Relive and revive the glory of MS Amma's immortal songs which would communicate her greatness to a new generation of rasikas and kindle their interest in Carnatic music. 2. Make music a vehicle of compassion and support to the needy, a principle that MS Amma followed all her life, by dedicating the sale proceeds of the tickets towards supporting cost free eye care to the poor and needy.

Sankara Nethralaya paid its homage and thanksgiving to one of its greatest supporter and well wisher, singing legend Dr. M. S. Subbulakshmi on her birth centennial. The institution organized musical concerts by maestros in their field of music cross 8 US cities as a musical homage. These events raised enough funds to perform 3000 cost free cataract surgeries to indigent patients in India, a most befitting tribute to a noble singer who had bequeathed her divine voice to the alleviation of pain and suffering of the poor and needy.

The crowning moments of the tribute were 'AR RAHMAN LIVE' a scintillating concert by Oscar awardee AR. Rahman on India's independence Day at the 'General Assembly' of the United Nations, to a packed multinational audience. The concert marked the 50th year of MS Amma's legendary concert titled 'A voice for peace' at the invite of the then secretary general Mr UThant. This was followed by a concert at the UN by Ms. Sudha Ragunathan and troupe on October 2nd being celebrated as world non-violence day. The concluding event was a western classical concert by the legendary New York philharmonic led by Maestro Manfred Honeck in accompaniment with well known sitarist Ms. Anoushka Shankar.

The concerts were extremely well received not only by the Indian community in the USA but also by the local music lovers and patrons is evident by the fact that the 'Asia Society, Texas Centre' offered its hall at Houston totally cost free and its office members actively participated in organizing the event. It was a moment of great fulfilment to Sankara Nethralaya as the United Nations issued a postal stamp in commemoration of the centenary and the Governor of the State of Illinois. Mayors of the city of Houston, Pearland and Sugarland in Texas declared September 16th as 'MS Subbulakshmi Celebration Day.

MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION

CONCLUSION

The Foundation has recorded yet another satisfying performance with the net surplus

increasing by 12% and the total income by 8% compared to last year. The hospital at Rajarhat

was inaugurated on 27the February 2017 and has come into regular operation. The progress

on the Thane project is slow due to various reasons and we are awaiting allotment of further

piece of land for the full development of the facility. The IIT, Madras and SankaraNethralaya

co-product of Mobile Eye Surgery unit (MESU) is in operation for the last 4 years in Tamilnadu.

This year with the donation and initiative of Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust one more MESU unit

came about in Jharkand and completed successfully several camps in the tribal areas.

The year also witnessed the birth centennial celebrations of music legend Smt. M. S.

Subbulakshmi celebrated by Sankara Nethralaya across 8 Cities in United States with Music

concerts by Smt. Sudha Raghunathan. To commemorate the Independence Day and also the

concert of Smt. M. S. Subbulakshmi at the U N General Assembly, Maestro Mr. A. R. Rahman

conducted a music concert at the same General Assembly venue for a selected international

invitees and diplomats. The music concerts and programme of Mr. A. R. Rahman were well

attended and were a tremendous success and should pave a way for further improving the

efforts of Sankara Nethralaya for vision care.

Sankara Nethralaya is continuously reinforcing its position as a premier institution in quality

eye care. As emphasized by the Founder Visionary, Dr. S. S. Badrinath, Nethralaya is growing

on all the 4 focus areas of Ophthamalic Care, Free Treatment to poor patients and Teaching,

Training and Fundamental Research. VRF also has performed creditably during the year with

more publications to their credit in premier journals and getting into lot of collaborative

joint research programmes with premier organisations in India and abroad.

The SN Academy will play a significant role in the coming years and will turn out significant

number of qualified personnel in the cause of Eye Care Delivery System in addition to being a

revenue earner for Sankara Nethralaya.

Threats & Concerns

Consistent efforts of the various consultants have improved the overall performance

amicably. Utilisations of our State of the art facilities have improved. The revised

compensation structure for staff and consultants were agreed upon and implemented.

Sankara Nethralaya standards of eye care have been accredited with NABH certification and

international recognition. However the increased presence of other eye care institutions

though is a good for the society, may pose a threat and reduce the utilization levels of the

hospital facility.

28

MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION

New Projects

Thane Municipal Corporation has already allotted 2 acres of land for building state of art Eye

Care hospital. As per the design developed, we require additional land about 0.75 acres,

allotment of which is under progress. The MOU for the land which has been entered will be

suitably modified to include the additional land. The lease of army land in St.Thomas mount

has been extended by another 33 years. The plan approval for construction of the

community hospital there, has also been obtained and the work will commence soon.

Human Relations

The Founder, Dr S S Badrinath and Dr Vasanthi Badrinath are the real force behind this great

institution, continuously guiding and monitoring the progress of the institution in every

sphere. Their concerted actions in the continuous development of Consultants and their

professional management style with succession plans have started yielding results. The

Vice Chairman, Dr T S Surendran, Medical Directors / Senior Consultants DrPrema

Padmanabhan, DrTarun Sharma, Dr Pramod Bhende and Dr L Vijaya, Dr J Biswas all share a

common vision as that of the Founder, Dr S S Badrinath, which helps to continue the

successful functioning of the Organisation.

Quality administrative support is provided by Dr K S Vasan, the M.D., ably assisted by Ms.

Akila Ganesan, Director Administration and Ms Susila Girisan, DGM – Finance, Mr V

Vaidyanathan, Board Member continues to render his expert guidance to ensure the smooth

functioning of the Organisation. Dr Girish Siva Rao has joined as Medical Director -

Administration and has been elected as the Vice President of MRF. He is an alumini of

Sankara Nethralaya and earlier was Director at Ganpathi Nethralaya in Jalna till recently.

Our entire para medical and administrative staffs are an important link between the

patients and the institution. They ensure the smooth functioning of the Organization.

Regular training classes are being held to some of these groups.

I record with gratitude the support of the dedicated Board of Management who despite their

other priorities have always come forward to advise the Institution whenever needed even

at very short notices.

Our auditors, since the beginning of this institution, M/s S. Viswanathan & co. are carrying

out their assignment as a service to a non-for-profit organization for a token compensation. I

record with appreciation the personal involvement of the partners Mr. C. N. Ramachandran

and Mr. Chella Srinivasan. The internal auditors Mr. S. A. Bhatt are also very dedicated in

their service to us. I thank them for their personal involvement in our case.
