    3. Sankara Nethralaya, Rameshwaram: The Sankara Nethralaya Rameshwaram started primarily to cater to the very low income

groups has screened more than 3100 new patients and 312 cataract surgeries have been

performed during the financial year 2013-14. (FY 2012-13: 6240 new patients and 635

    Surgeries).

    4. Sankara Nethralaya, Sricity: Sankara Nethralaya has reached its milestone when it opened its branch at Sricity, and

integrated business township situated 65 KM North of Chennai on the Kolkata National

Highway. This center was formally opened on the auspicious day of Tamil New Year (14th April

2013). This center has provided services to more than 3350 patients and has performed more

than 150 cataract surgeries during the financial year 2013-14.

CONCLUSIONSankara Nethralaya continues to be a premier institution delivering quality eye care. It is spreading

its wings on all the 3 focus areas of Ophthalmic Care, Free Treatment to poor patients and

Teaching, Training and Fundamental Research as envisaged by the Founder Visionary, Dr. S S

Badrinath. The performance is continuously climbing to greater heights with the passing years.

The emphasis on Research and Tertiary Care is on the increase. We already have 4 patents granted

to VRF, our Sister Organization. In due course of time, these patents will generate income,

justifying the resources spent on the research.

The detailed account of the Sankara Nethralaya Academy and the various courses conducted by

them are already presented. It is expected that SN Academy will play a significant role in the

future years and it is expected to turn out significant number of qualified personnel in the cause of

Eye Care Delivery System in addition to being a revenue earner for Sankara Nethralaya.

    MEDICAL RESEARCH FOUNDATION

Threats & ConcernsThe achievements and the operational highlights have been listed in the previous section of this

report. While the Institution is continuing to be a Referral Tertiary Care Centre in India. As already

reported last year, MRF has to face sustained competition in the anterior segment from several

newer entrants/chain hospitals. Our excellent facilities are not fully utilized as we are also to

consider upgrading our compensation package in order to retain the well qualified consultants

from being lured by the new entities. This results in increased expenditure to SN also and thus

pushing up the eye care expenditure for the patients. While Sankara Nethralaya's standards of eye

care delivery have been accredited with a NABH certification and international recognition, we are

struggling to manage the cost in the face of the severe competition and at the same time we also

need to keep updating with newer equipments & techniques and also expend for research &

    training.

The civil work for the Rajarhat Hospital Projects is progressing well and a portion of the first phase

of the hospital is likely to commence service by March 2015. State of art instruments and

equipments are being procured. This giant step should pave way for further improvement of

services in the eastern region and realize the further phases of the hospital projects that are being

    planned.
