Jubilee Year of Mercy. Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, the Lectionary's Year of Luke presents a Gospel in which Jesus, who has welcomed, taught, healed, and shown God's mercy to the multitude, refuses the Twelve's demand to dismiss the crowd before him. Instead, he says, "Give them some food yourselves" (Luke 9:13). In Jesus' hands, what little the Twelve has feeds five thousand ("men," and probably

as many women and children), leaving twelve baskets so the Twelve can continue Jesus' ministry of mercy. Pope Francis has asked

how we celebrate and live the Eucharist. Do we keep it to our-selves? Or do we "commune" not only with Jesus but with the multitude whom Jesus has given us to cherish? Entrusted to Jesus and shared with others, our limited resources can go a long way. Recognizing Jesus in the Eucharist demands that we recognize Jesus also in the hungry crowd. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Once the early Christians realized that Christ's coming in glory was delayed,

there was a need to provide for the governance and everyday needs of the church. The various "orders" within the church carried forward the apostles' ministry, but also allowed for a measure of creativity. The sacrament we call "holy orders" evolved somewhat slowly. At first, it made sense for Christians to use the forms they knew, adapting them to new situations. Synagogues, for example, were administered by a board of "elders," translated into Greek as presbyteros. We know from the Acts of the Apostles that a system of presbyters was a normal feature of church life from earliest days. They stood in relationship to another order, that of "overseers," translated into Greek as episkopos, giving us the English "bishops." The bishop was the shepherd, the faithful tender of the flock, one who offered the Eucharist, forgave sins, and main-tained the bond of charity. Just as the deacons were the chief advisers for the charita-ble life of the church, so were the presbyters meant to advise the bishop on the spiri-tual life of the faithful. FED BY THE LORD Jesus' words "This is my body" and "This cup is the new covenant in my blood"

were only part of his table blessing. Jesus twice said: "Do this in remembrance of me" (1 Corinthians 11:24, 25).

This is the good news of today's solemnity. Like the five thousand hungry souls, we are fed by our Lord. This is not food that satisfies for only a short time, until the next meal. It is food that lasts and changes us. It is food for sharing in much the same way as Melchizedek did when he brought bread and wine to the returning Abraham.

Saint Justin Martyr Young Adult Ministry announces our 4th annual retreat, "Testify to Love: Live Like That." This year's retreat will be held July 8-10 at St. Andrew's Ab-bey, in Valyermo, CA. This weekend retreat is an opportu-nity to experience God's love, reflect on His purpose for our lives, and draw us closer to Him through our Catholic faith and community. Happy Feast Day St. Justin Martyr Parish!

Wednesday, June 1, is the Feast of our patron, St. Justin Martyr

Justin was born in Flavia Neapolis, in modern day Israel, around the year 100-114. His parents were pagans and of Greek origin. They were wealthy and able to provide him with a first-class education. This thirst for knowledge led him to apply himself to the study of philosophy. Justin attached him-self first to one system of philosophy, then another, but none of these were able to completely satisfy his thirst for God. Even-tually his search led him to Christianity. Convinced of this as the one true faith, he was baptized

and began teaching and writing about Christianity. The principal facts of Justin’s life are gathered from his own writings. Although

many of Justin’s writings have perished, his surviving writings are among the most important that have come down to us from the second century. St. Justin is the patron of philosophers, apologists, and lecturers.

Since 1958 the statue of St. Justin (above) has stood on the roof over the doors of our church facing Ball Road. It was designed by one of our founding parishioners, Shirley Horger, and commissioned by our new pastor Fr. Hugh O’Connor. He is holding a book and a feather quill pen because he is a writer, and he wears the sash of a philosopher. The cost was $400.

The icon of Saint Justin Martyr (above, right) on display in Saint Justin Martyr Church, is an original and was created in Alaska especially for our parish and in-stalled in 1999. There is no other icon like it in the world.

The icon shows Justin in heaven, surrounded by panels depicting his life. The panels are read from left to right, beginning at the top. The top border illustrates his search for the truth in the various philosophies of his time. The side borders tell the story of his conversion, baptism, his teachings and writings, and his trial. The bottom border illustrates Justin’s condemnation, martyrdom, and burial.

Prayer to St. Justin Father, as your Spirit guides us and your loving care keeps us safe, be close to us and form us in the image of your son. May the fire of your Spirit, which filled the heart of St. Justin Martyr with courage and love, encourage us to witness and proclaim the gospel in all we say and do.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Año Jubilar de la Misericordia Solemnidad del Cuerpo y la

Sangre de Cristo (Corpus Christi)

En este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia coincide con la lectura dominical del Evangelio de Lucas, este domingo el Evan-gelio presenta a Jesús recibi-endo, enseñando, sanando y mostrando la misericordia de Dios a la multitud y, también rechazando la solicitud de los Doce de despedir a la multitud. Al contrario, él dice "denles

ustedes de comer" (Lucas 9:13). En las manos de Jesús, lo poco que tienen los Doce alimenta a cinco mil hombres (sin contar mujeres ni niños) y lo con lo que sobró se llenaron doce canastos para que los Doce pudieran continuar el min-isterio de misericordia de Jesús. El Papa Francisco nos ha preguntado cómo nosotros podemos celebrar y vivir la Eu-caristía. ¿Nos lo guardamos para nosotros mismos? ¿O "comulgamos" no solo con Jesús sino con la multitud que Jesús nos da para apreciar? Confiados a Jesús y comparti-dos con otros, nuestros recursos pueden durar mucho tiempo. Reconocer a Jesús en la Eucaristía exige que re-conozcamos a Jesús en la multitud hambrienta. Reflexiones para la homilía Hay un dicho haitiano que asegura que quien da las gracias, en realidad tam-

bién dice: “hazlo otra vez”. El agradecimiento siempre acarrea más regalos. Cuan-do se da gracias, se reconoce que lo recibido es gratuito, que no se ha ganado ni se ha hecho ningún mérito para obtenerlo. Esa actitud, que es un producto de la humildad y de la sencillez, siempre invita a dar más; y también invita a imitar a quien entrega con generosidad.

Cuando Jesús toma el pan, lo primero que hace siempre es dar las gracias, por poca cosa que parezca, según la lectura de hoy. Evidentemente, con aquel pan, no había suficiente para la multitud; pero Jesús da las gracias. Quizás muchas veces nosotros nos paramos a lamentar lo que no tenemos en lugar de dar gracias por lo que sí tenemos, aunque parezca muy poco. Al dar gracias, se multiplica la acción de dar.

Muchas veces también podríamos pensar que no tenemos mucho que ofrecer a la comunidad. No tenemos mucho talento o mucho tiempo, o no nos considera-mos capaces; pero eso era lo mismo que decían los amigos de Jesús: no tenían ni siquiera casi para ellos, mucho menos para dar de comer a cinco mil; pero, al dar gracias y presentárselo a Dios, se multiplica; es el compartir que multiplica las cosas.

Curiosamente, lo que se multiplica es solamente lo que se entrega por com-pleto. Si se quedara encerrado no tendría ninguna posibilidad de multiplicarse. Al no dar gracias por eso poco que se tiene, al no ponerlo a disposición de otros, no tiene oportunidad de multiplicarse y dar fruto; y no es que unas veces ocurra y otras no, al azar; siempre que se da, ocurre. Lo que se entrega se nos regresa au-mentado, multiplicado de mil maneras.

Para la reflexión: ¿Qué tengo miedo de entregar por si se me acaba? ¿Cuáles son mis excusas y justificaciones para no entregarme a un trabajo, una misión o una tarea?

Génesis 14:18-20 En esta escena Abraham es bendecido por un rey sacerdote. No se ha establecido aún si Melquisedec era rey sacerdote de la Jerusalén que más tarde David arrebataría a los jebuseos. Abraham cumple con lo mandado por el derecho vigente y paga la décima parte al sacerdote. El Nuevo Testamento ve en este personaje, que ofrece pan y vino, un anticipo de la figura de Cristo, sumo y eterno sacerdote de la nueva alianza. 1 Corintios 11:23-26 La cena del Señor solía celebrarse al atardecer en las casas privadas de los más ricos de la comunidad, que tenían espacio para acoger a 50 o 60 personas. Antes de comenzar la cena del Señor se tenía una comida de herman-dad a la cual los pudientes traían sus provisiones, que supuestamente tenían que ser compartidas entre todos. Sin esperar a que llegaran los más necesitados y rezaga-dos, que solían ser los trabajadores, los ricos comían y bebían a sus anchas, de modo que cuando llegaban los pobres les tocaban las sobras, si es que sobraba algo. Ante esta situación, Pablo expone el relato de la institución de la Eucaristía, su sentido y consecuencias en una bella catequesis. Se trata del documento más antiguo del Nuevo Testamento, ya que la carta está escrita antes que los evange-lios. El apóstol les dice que les transmite una tradición recibida en Antioquía. Pa-blo sitúa esto entre dos horizontes: uno histórico “la noche en que era entregado” y otro futuro: “Hasta que vuelva”. Entre ambos horizontes discurre el aquí y ahora de la vida y misión de la comunidad cristiana. Lucas 9:11B-17 Existen diversas interpretaciones de la multiplicación de los panes y los peces. Para algunos exégetas, la explicación de la abundancia de comi-da podría encontrarse en el hecho de que probablemente mucha gente tuviera algo de comida y la entregara para compartir. Otra interpretación afirma que todas las mujeres que no estaban contadas eran precisamente las que tenían en sus bolsas la comida que alimentó a la multitud. Otros mantienen la convicción de un verdadero milagro de multiplicación obrado como signo y enseñanza eucarística y para mos-trar que Jesús era verdaderamente el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios. En todos los casos, se ve en este episodio la imagen y significado de la Eucaristía, como pan vivo que se parte, se reparte y se multiplica para la vida del mundo.

Nuestra cultura: Nadie sale de una casa hispana a la que ha ido de visita sin comer o beber algo. Parece que, por pobre que sea la familia, siempre hay algo bueno que compartir. Donde comen dos, comen tres… o cuatro o miles, como en la historia. Es parte del sentido de hospitalidad tan arraigado en nuestra cultura.

“Esto es mi cuerpo, que se entrega por ustedes” *El día de la Ultima Cena, refiriéndose al pan que había tomado de la mesa y que acababa de convertir en su cuerpo, Jesucristo dijo: “Esto es mi cuerpo”. *Otro día, refiriéndose a los hambrientos, sedientos, foraste-ros, enfermos y encarcelados, expreso la misma verdad, solo que con otras palabras: “cuando lo hicieron con el más insignificante de mis hermanos, conmigo lo hicieron”. *El pan consagrado en el altar es, pues, realmente el cuerpo de Cristo; pero también lo son sus hermanos, puesto que en ellos tiene hambre, sed, frio, soledad, desamparo y tristeza: “porque estuve hambriento y me dieron de comer…..” *Así, pues, el cuerpo de Cristo que recibimos en la Eucarist-ía, nos compromete seriamente con el cuerpo de Cristo que son todos sus hermanos. *Y esto porque, si Cristo nos entrega su cuerpo en la Comu-nión, a nosotros no nos queda sino entregarnos a él, donde él quiso estar: en los demás. *Entre otros, en el cónyuge que tiene hambre de afecto, de respeto, de ser tratado como igual….. *En los hijos, que quizás están desnudos de cariño, de com-prensión, de ser tomados en cuenta…. *En todos los que tienen hambre y están desnudos en el sen-tido literal de la palabra. Aquellos que son pobres, oprimidos, indefensos, humilla-dos, ignorantes, minusválidos, y los niños por nacer, tam-bién son el cuerpo de Cristo. Los protestantes no creen que la eucaristía sea el verdadero cuerpo, sangre, alma y divinidad de Jesucristo. Los católicos creen que, después de la consagración en la misa, “el Señor Jesucristo, verdadero Dios y verdadero hombre, está verda-dera, real y sustancialmente contenido” en la eucaristía bajo las apariencias del pan y del vino (Concilio de Trento, decre-to sobre la eucaristía). La creencia católica de la eucaristía fue unánimemente sostenida durante los primeros 1500 años del cristianismo. El fundamento bíblico de la enseñanza cató-lica sobre la eucaristía es contundente e innegable.
