Young at Heart Seniors Our Young at Heart Seniors group will be journeying to see

the exhibit King Tut “Wonderful Things” from the Pharaoh’s Tomb at Anaheim’s Muzeo Museum and Cultural Center, 241 S. Anaheim Blvd. (at Broadway). This will be at 1 p.m. on Wed., Jan. 20. The cost is $10 per person (pre-pay by Jan. 5 to hold your reservation.)

Ten years in the making, this dazzling collection of 131 repli-cas of Tutankhamen’s legendary treasures recreates the richest ar-chaeological find of all time. Carefully recreated by the artisans of the Pharaonic Village in Giza, Egypt and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, this collection is larger and more complete than any previ-ous exhibition of original artifacts. Displayed in open glass cases, King Tut includes replicas of the pharaoh’s sacred and personal possessions along with associated artifacts from the period sur-rounding Tutankhamen’s reign.

LOOKING IN THE RIGHT PLACES "Appearances can be deceiving," as the saying goes.

As we celebrate the epiphania, the "appearing" of the eter-nal Word of God on earth, this is still true.

What rapturous foresight must have filled Isaiah as he wrote the words we hear today. How, for four hundred years, they must have filled the hearts of the people of Israel with hope for the day when God's glory would shine on them. How deceived some must have felt when the glory of God came to them in the lowliest and humblest of human lives.

We have many expectations about how the divine presence will appear among us. But we can also set our-selves up, through these expectations, to miss the divine glory when it truly appears. We get caught up in looking for the star, forgetting that the star is not the divine sign, the babe is. It may take a persistent journey for us to come upon the true appearance of God's glory in our lives: Jesus Christ. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Treasures from our Tradition Over the next few weeks, if you were to stroll around

Prague or Budapest or Kraków, you might see curious grafitti scratched in chalk over some doorways:

"20 C M B 16." The families dwelling behind those doors have celebrated the Epiphany door blessing. They have gathered before the feast-day meal, probably after Mass, and the head of the family has traced the sign of the cross on the piece of chalk. Standing on a ladder, the leader traces the numbers for the new year, and the letters C M B for Christus Mansionem Benedicat, Latin for "May Christ bless this house." The letters also point to the names that tradition has assigned to the mysterious magi, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar--although scripture tells us noth-ing of their number, their country, or their names.

The blessing speaks of journeys ended and journeys begun at the doorway, and prays that all journeys be as satisfying as was the magi's. It prays that the house beyond the door have the quality of love and peace that the magi marveled at when they at last arrived in Bethlehem. In some countries where the Soviet Union tried to impose a harsh atheism, the vigor of this household custom survived all efforts to erase Christian customs. In the years of strug-gle, the chalked blessings were a pervasive sign of defi-ance, and now in the light of new freedoms, they are a sign of the resilience of our tradition and the fulfillment of the magi's quest for meaning and peace. -Rev. Sewing machines and fabric needed

Our parish Sewing Group’s mission is to bring warmth and comfort to the elderly and handicapped.

Our fabric shelves are getting bare and we are in need of new fabrics that are suitable for making lap quilts, senior bibs, and wheelchair and walker bags, as well as many other useful items.

We also make knitted scarves and caps and would appre-ciate colorful yarn.

Our sewing group ladies are growing in number and we are in need of sewing machines. If you can donate these items or monetary gifts to help with this ministry we would be so grateful and appreciative.

Pope Francis announced the Extraordinary Jubilee Holy Year of Mercy from December 8, 2015-November 20, 2016.

The Year of Mercy is a graced opportunity to contemplate more profoundly and live more concretely the mystery of God’s unconditional love.

Spiritual Works of Mercy

The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout history. Just as Jesus at-tended to the spiritual well-being of those he ministered to, these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to "help our neighbor in their spiritual needs" (U.S. Catholic Catechism for Adults).

The seven Spiritual Works of Mercy are: COUNSELING THE DOUBTFUL Everyone has moments of doubt in their faith jour-ney. Nevertheless, we should always remember that Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life and turn to him along our way. INSTRUCTING THE IGNORANT Learn about our faith and be open to talking with oth-ers about our beliefs. There is always something more to discover about our faith. ADMONISHING THE SINNER Do not judge, but be supportive in helping others find their way and correct their mistakes. Together we can learn to walk more closely with Christ. COMFORTING THE SORROWFUL Be open to listening and comforting those who are dealing with grief. Even if we aren't sure of the right words to say, our presence can make a big difference. FORGIVING INJURIES Forgiving others is difficult at times because we do not have God's limitless mercy and compassion. But Jesus teaches us that we should forgive as God forgives, relying on him to help us show others the mercy of God. BEARING WRONGS PATIENTLY Do not be bitter about wrongs done against you. Place your hope in God so that you can endure the troubles of this world and face them with a compassionate spirit. PRAYING FOR THE LIVING AND THE DEAD Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we can support others. Joining together in prayer for the living and the dead entrusts us all into God's care.

Advent celebrations -- Our parish celebrated Las Posadas and Simbang Gabi as part of our devotions for Advent.

Simbang Gabi is a Filipino tradition of a novena of Masses from Dec. 16-24. For nine days a Mass is held at dawn, in anticipation of welcoming the Child Jesus at Christmas and to honor the Virgin Mary. (More photos next week)

Las Posadas is a nine day Mexi-can tradition, roughly translated as “the inns” or “the lodgings.” Held from Dec. 16-24, it symbolizes the journey of Mary and Joseph as they search for shelter in Bethlehem before the birth of Jesus. (Photos at right. More photos next week)

Many volunteers worked to prepare and assist with the Masses, including set up, altar servers, lectors, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, the choir, and the music director. A reception followed the Mass. (photos next week)

3 De Enero, Epifanía del Señor Encontrar la salvación donde menos lo esperas

Isaías 60:1-6 La gloria de Dios en el Antiguo Testamento se consideraba sinónimo de su presencia. Dios tiene que venir acompañado de una luz res-plandeciente. El profeta veía el cumplimiento de las acciones de salvación y gloria de Dios, aunque el Mesías anunciado y prometido todavía no estuviese presente. Efesios 3:2-3a, 5-6 La lectura de efesios declara que todos —judíos y genti-les— son herederos de la promesa de salvación. Todos los hombres y muje-res, sin ninguna exclusión, se reunirán en la ciudad santa para cantar la ala-banza de Dios. La salvación es para todos, sin excluir a nadie. Mateo 2:1-12 No se sabe si eran tres o más los sabios. La tradición ha mantenido que eran tres, que venían de distintos puntos de la tierra conocida e incluso les ha dado nombres: Melchor, Gaspar y Baltasar. La historicidad de estos detalles no es el objetivo de esta narración. Lo importante es la ma-nifestación de Dios a través de esos símbolos. La estrella se refiere a la pro-fecía mesiánica del Libro de Números. El hecho de que los sabios vengan de distintas partes de la tierra hace referencia a la profecía en la que los reyes de toda la tierra vienen a rendir homenaje al único Dios y rey. Nuestra cultura: Para la cultura hispana, la fiesta de Reyes siempre ha sido muy significativa; es el día en que se celebra el reconocimiento de Jesús como Rey y Dios; por lo tanto, es el día en que tiene más significado hacer regalos, en memoria de esos regalos presentados por los Magos al Niño Jesús. En Puerto Rico hay una rica tradición de imaginería de los Reyes y en muchos países hay cabalgatas y desfiles. Los niños se emocionan pensando en lo que traerán de regalo este año. Hay costumbre también de tener el Roscón de Reyes, que es un pan dulce en forma de rosca, en que se esconde una figurita de bebé. Quien la encuentra en el pedazo que le toca, tiene la responsabilidad de invitar al año siguiente.

Reflexiones para la homilía Siempre se anda buscando algo… una mejor posición, un buen trabajo, una

casa más adecuada… pero no solo materialmente; también se busca felicidad, paz, tranquilidad. A veces ni sabemos lo que buscamos. A veces no sabemos nombrar nuestra sed. Pensamos que una cosa u otra nos harán felices. Si nos tocara la loter-ía… Si nos llegara la ansiada promoción… si la persona a la que miramos tanto nos mirara de regreso. Pensamos que con eso ya se nos daría la felicidad; sin embargo, algo nos dice dentro de nosotros (y sabemos por experiencia), que el alcanzar todo eso nos invita a buscar algo más.

Algo así les debía pasar a los Magos. Miraban al cielo insistentemente para ver los signos; pero el ver la estrella parece que los desafió bastante. Imagínense que, el ver de pronto lo que es su verdadera felicidad, que el intuir que ahí está por in la respuesta a lo que siempre han buscado, supusiese grandes sacrificios, dejarlo todo atrás, emprender un proceso o un camino, difícil y lleno de riesgos. Quizá entonces nos digamos simplemente que no merece la pena, que al in y al cabo, estamos bien como estamos. Los Magos tomaron el riesgo. Se pusieron en un camino largo y difícil.

A simple vista, parecería que lo que encontraron tan grandes personajes, fue una total desilusión: un niño recién nacido, de padres pobres, recostado en un pese-bre, no parece que sea motivo de gran alegría después de tantas dificultades para llegar; sin embargo, en el evangelio no se registra ningún tipo de desilusión por parte de los Magos. Han llegado precisamente a donde tenían que llegar: a recono-cer el objeto de su búsqueda de tantos años en Jesús y a celebrarlo con gran alegría. En el niño, aparentemente tan frágil, tan vulnerable y tan poco importante, encuen-tran la salvación que buscaban. Tenían la luz de la manifestación, de la epifanía de Dios.

Quizá algunas veces nosotros rechacemos lo que encontramos, porque no nos parece que la voluntad de Dios pueda consistir en algo tan aparentemente pequeño, insignificante y poco importante. Quizá necesitemos pedir esa luz intensa que nos asegura que es ahí, precisamente, donde está Dios para nosotros: en un aconteci-miento que no esperábamos; en el cuidado de un niño pequeño o de alguien vulnera-ble o enfermo; en una invitación o llamada que nos hace alguien a hacer el bien, a dar, como los Magos, lo mejor de nosotros. ¿A dónde nos podría llevar la estrella de nuestra vocación? Para la reflexión: ¿A qué te sientes llamado con gran profundidad y urgencia en esta vida? ¿Piensas que será algo muy glorioso? ¿En qué sentido? ¿Qué sacrificios estás dispuesto a hacer para ponerte en marcha?

El Año de la Misericordia es una oportunidad de gracia para con-templar con más profundidad y

vivir más concretamente el miste-rio del amor incondicional de Dios.

Las Obras de Misericordia Espirituales

Las Obras de Misericordia Espirituales han sido duran-te mucho tiempo una parte de la tradición cristiana, que aparecen en las obras de los teólogos y escritores espirituales a lo largo de la historia. Así como Jesús asistió al bienestar espiritual de los que a él dio mi-nistró, estas obras de misericordia espirituales nos guíen para "ayudar a nuestro prójimo en sus necesida-des espirituales” (U.S. Catholic Catechism for Adults). Las siete Obras de Misericordia Espirituales son:

CONSEJERÍA A LA DUDOSA Todo el mundo tiene momentos de duda en su camino de fe. Sin embargo, siempre debemos recordar que Cristo es el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida, y volvamos a él a lo largo de nuestro camino.

INSTRUIR A LOS IGNORANTES Aprenda acerca de nuestra fe y estar abierto a hablar con otros acerca de nuestras creencias. Siempre hay algo más por descu-brir acerca de nuestra fe.

AMONESTAR AL PECADOR No juzgar, pero ser un apoyo de ayuda a otros para que encuentren su cami-no y corregir sus errores. Juntos podemos aprender a caminar más de cerca con Cristo.

CONSOLANDO A LOS AFLIGIDOS Esté abierto a escuchar y consolar a los que están lidiando con dolor. Incluso si no estamos seguros de las palabras adecua-das que decir, nuestra presencia puede hacer una gran diferencia.

PERDONAR HERIDAS Es difícil a veces porque no tenemos la misericordia y la compasión ilimitada de Dios para perdonar a los demás. Pero Jesús nos ense-ña que debemos perdonar como Dios perdona, con-fiando en él para que nos ayude a mostrar a otros la misericordia de Dios.

LLEVAR CON PACIENCIA LAS INJUSTICIAS No se amargue por errores cometidos en su contra. Ponga su esperanza en Dios para que pueda soportar los proble-mas de este mundo y enfrentarse a ellos con un espíri-tu compasivo.

REZAR POR LOS VIVOS Y LOS MUERTOS La ora-ción es una de las formas más poderosas que pode-mos hacer para apoyar a los demás. Unirse en oración por los vivos y los muertos nos confía a todos en el cuidado de Dios. (U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops)

1 de Enero —- Santa María, Madre de Dios — Dios te Bendiga Nuestra cultura: Es muy común bendecir a los hijos antes de ir a dormir o antes de cualquier tarea nueva. Muchas veces nos despedimos unos de otros diciendo, “que Dios los bendiga”. No puede haber mejor expresión de amor: desear la bendición de Dios sobre otra persona es desearle toda la presencia de Dios en su vida, es decir, desear lo mejor.

Reflexiones para la homilía “Déjame en paz”, decimos a veces con irritación cuando en realidad, no esta-

mos en paz ni con nosotros mismos. Pedir a alguien que nos deje en paz quiere decir querer cortar la relación, por lo menos en ese momento. Es todo lo contrario a estar en paz. Estar en paz es estar en buena relación, es decir, tener la suficiente confianza como para dialogar con otra persona sin miedo, sin tener la urgencia de mentirle, sin sentir un impulso a traicionar a la otra persona. No es una armonía falsa, que solo dice lo que la otra persona quiere oír.

En nuestra vida, aunque en muchas ocasiones parezca en lo exterior que esta-mos en armonía y que no hay conflictos externos, no existe de verdad la paz, porque no estamos en sintonía con la relación recta que Dios quisiera para nosotros. La relación de Dios es relación de amor, pero no de un amor de puro sentimiento o sentimentalidad. Es un amor recio, que solo busca el bien de la otra persona, su bendición. Es un amor libre, sin temores ni miedos, que va siempre con la verdad por delante.

Esta relación, este amor, parece que solo es posible en la vida de Jesús. Cuando se vive en la verdad de Jesús ya no hay temor y, por lo tanto, ya no hay mentira. Ya no hay egoísmo y ya no hay esclavitud a lo que uno tiene, porque todo se entrega con generosidad. Ya no hay dominio de unos sobre otros, porque todos desean lo mejor, la bendición de Dios para los demás. Sin temores y con verdad, sin egoísmos y con generosidad, no hay necesidad ninguna de pelea ni conflicto; hay paz.
