All are Welcome! As a community of the people of God, the members of San Marcos Lutheran Church are called to welcome

all people, regardless of age, economic status, ethnic background, gender, physical or mental ability, race or sexual orienta-

tion. We affirm that in Christ “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male or fe-

male.” (Galatians 3:28)

THE GOOD NEWS Page 3

Recently when I was reading the daily devotions from Luther Seminary, I came across this

one from the retired pastor I got to know when I went on his pilgrimage to Palestine and

Israel. It spoke deeply to me. I hope it speaks to you as well.

Peace in Christ,

Pastor David Jorstad

“We Come to the Hungry Feast” (ELW #479)

We come to the hungry feast

hungry for a word of peace.

To hungry hearts unsatisfied

the love of God is not denied.

We come, we come to the hungry feast.

We come to the hungry feast

hungry for a world released

from hungry folk of ev’ry kind,

the poor in body, poor in mind.

We come, we come to the hungry feast.

We come to the hungry feast

hungry that the hunger cease,

and knowing, though we eat our fill,

the hunger will stay with us; still

we come, we come to the hungry feast.

“I've often gotten the title of this hymn confused in my mind and referred to it as, ‘Welcome to the Hungry

Feast.’ I'm not sure it doesn't mean the same thing. We live in times of hunger - for food, for connection,

for peace, for meaning, for love, for forgiveness, for hope, and so on. I don't know if we are any hungrier

than those of any other time. I do know that we seem to live in very anxious times; it is easy to become

overwhelmed with all the stimulation from twenty-four-hour news blitzes and the commercials of an elec-

tion year.

Ray Makeever writes that we hunger for a world of peace, a world released, so that our hunger will cease.

St. Augustine said, ‘Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee.’ The hunger for peace and release will

most likely be with us to some degree until our last breath. Thankfully, Christ comes to us when we cannot

come to him. When we come to the ‘hungry feast,’ we are welcomed by the One who promises rest for our

restless hearts.

When we cannot find the strength to come to you, O Lord,

we give thanks that you come to us and welcome us into your presence. Amen.”

Pastor Steve Quill, retired

Fixing Our Eyes on Jesus

“ Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eter-nal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is un-

seen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” II Corinthians 4:16-18

There’s been some great uncertainty in our family lately. We await medical results for my mom, we try to

make plans knowing we don’t know the future, we hope, we pray. Honestly, this waiting and trying to be

flexible is exhausting. Additionally, there’s the unexpected emotional breakdowns that happen along the

way. I hadn’t anticipated those. What fun.

But throughout all this upheaval, there is one constant. God is the constant. I find my times with God are

more precious and more needed than ever.

“In my distress I cried out to the LORD; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from his sanctuary; my cry to him reached his ears.”

Psalm 18

One way in which I know my cry has been heard by God is the warmth and understanding I receive from

members of this congregation. You understand. You understand uncertainty, harsh medical diagnoses,

even death. Although I’m sorry you’ve suffered such things yourself, I’m grateful for your understanding

as my family goes through this now.

I’m especially grateful when you reach out to other members and visitors of this congregation who are in

distress. You offer unconditional love and understanding. You offer help, meals, companionship, phone

calls and above all, prayer. You offer to listen to each other, without judgment, knowing you might not

have the answers for other person. However you know how important it is to stand by and bear witness to

their pain and uncertainty.

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2

We need each other. We are blessed with this wonderful community of faith. God is present with us and

we will make it through. Thank you.

Pastor Karla

SMLC MEMBERS,

HAVE YOU FOUND YOUR NAME? We are blessed to have new laminated name tags,

clips and lanyards (yes with your name on both

sides so no more being a "blank" mem-

ber!). Thanks to member Penny Muetzel for the

new laminated nametags, lanyards, clips, and the

new laminating machine for the office.

Our other blessing is the beautiful new wooden

nametag cart thanks to Bill Hanson (Jolene's

dad). The stand has drawers below the nametags

to keep nametag clips and different color lanyards

(you can pick a color to match your outfit) and

other supplies. If you are unable to find your

name tag, or your name is spelled incorrectly or

not the name you want to appear on the name tag,

email or call me (Jan [email protected] or 619-992-

5465) or write your name/correct spelling on the

note pad left at the nametag stand. How wonder-

ful we will all be able to put a name with the face

of each of our members. There are blank stick

on nametags near the guest book in the Narthex

for our visitors.

Well a little update on me... Additional tests revealed my cancer was a little more ad-vanced than first thought requiring another biopsy to make best decisions regarding treat-ment. We caught it early and my surgery will be in early May.. Although I will be out of the office for a period of time, I will be checking in with the staff regularly and able to answer e-mail and return phone calls. So other than missing the children like crazy, I expect most things to continue on as normal. Certainly nothing will be different about your child’s school day….the staff and I have things dialed in for the next six weeks and on into summer, because that’s how much we care and value your children! Your prayers, cards, flowers, meals and well wishes have meant the world to me and my family during this difficult time . I am so grateful to you! Loads of Love, Mrs. McDaniel and family
