SAINT MARGARETP A R I S H

From Father Mike Dear Friends,

This weekend I am pleased to share some good news with you: we have decided to proceed with the major re-pair and renovation of the hall/gym

that is part of the elementary edu-cation building. You recall, I am sure, that the needs of this building and of the church have been the core of our part of the capital campaign. I want to give you the background of the above decision.• In December, Archdiocesan of-

ficials met with members of our Finance Committee, our Busi-ness Manager and me and opened up a good possibility for financ-ing. They recommended that we seek financing proposals from vari-ous banks that would help us move more rapidly with our major projects. Members of our Finance Commit-tee and our Business Manager have been working at this, and we expect the outcome will soon be an opportu-nity to borrow at a good, competitive rate of interest and a helpful term of years. These terms will be better than the Archdiocese itself could secure for us. We are very grateful for their proactive assistance with this.

• Income is starting to flow from the capital campaign. In addition to that, I have shared before that we have some capital savings that our Finance Committee prudently devel-oped over recent years in anticipation of addressing the major needs of our buildings. Using some of this reserve will limit the amount we will finance on this hall/gym project to no more than 50% of the cost. The total es-timated project cost is just under $1 million, as stated throughout the capi-tal campaign.

• The Archdiocese advises that it is to our advantage to go to bids as

soon as possible because of a fa-vorable construction market. This means that it is likely that bids will come in lower today than they will a year from now.

• We have received bids from four general contractors and are now very close to accepting the pro-posal from the low bidder. All of these bids are under the budgeted amount of $1 million.

• We plan to close the hall/gym in the first week of June. Most of the work will be done during the three summer months with full completion by late fall. We have worked carefully with all parties who utilize and de-pend on the availability of this build-ing to minimize inconvenience and interruption of programs.

• One advantage of doing the hall project first is that this will then be a much more comfortable setting for Mass when we undertake the church project (major repair, ren-ovation, and liturgical enhance-ment). We expect that we will need to vacate the church for a period of time. We are not yet sure how long that will be. At any rate, we will have air conditioning, a good sound sys-tem, and more appealing space for Mass in the hall when we will need to be out of the church.

Our Finance and Facilities Committees have thought through all of this very carefully. They are unanimous in sup-porting this direction. I am indebted and grateful to these parishioners for their time and expertise. The recommendations of these two committees went to our Pasto-ral Council which unanimously approved. I feel very well advised in giving the green light to moving on this first project. I again want to say how grateful I am to all of you who have contributed to the capi-tal campaign which is making this possible. Your gifts are and will be crucial. As we proceed, I will keep you updated on the progress of all of this. Father Mike

Volunteer Opportunity!

Prison Ministers Needed

Saint Margaret Parish has responsibility for the prison ministry for the Catholic inmates at the Harford Detention Center here in Bel Air. Each week Communion services are held on Sunday nights from 6:00 - 9:00 pm. Services are offered for the male and female inmates separately. There are 4-5 services each Sunday and approximately 20 - 35 in-mates attend each week. With enough vol-unteers, we could reduce the service time to an hour and a half rather than a three-hour commitment as well as being on call to ser-vice once every five or six weeks.

We presently only have three ministers who preside at the Communion services and we are in need of additional ministers. We would like to have at least 10 ministers in-volved in this ministry so we can continue our weekly coverage for the inmates.

The service is composed of the readings for the particular Sunday, short reflection, prayer of the faithful and distribution of the Eucharist to the inmates. The services are very inspiring and many times you leave the Detention Center in awe of having wit-nessed God’s work inside prison walls.

If you feel the Lord calling you at this time to this ministry, please call Jane O’Hara or Deacon Jim De Capite at the parish office, 410-879-2670.

Ministry of Consolation “Life After Loss”Our next gathering will take place at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, May 8 in the Adult Education Center Library.

Liturgy CornerApril showers bring May flowers…While this saying is true, far more is involved in having beautiful flowers in our church. This Easter, the Liturgy Re-source committee has been overwhelmed with compliments on the beauty of the decorations coordinated by Lisa Brown at the Callahan Center, Lisa Baldino at Saint Margaret Church and Rich Rome for our Easter Masses in the school hall. It is a tremendous amount of work, but the Church in Her wisdom directs par-ishes to use flowers and other fresh dec-orations to remind us of God’s beauty in creation. If you would like to assist in this wonderful ministry please con-tact Cecilia Pleiss as [email protected]. We need help to arrange flowers, water plants and assist in the setup and design. All are welcome!

Keeping The Faith Miss, Would You Take My Order?Benedictines, Dominicans, Jesuits, Carmelites, Franciscans, Carthusians - whew! They’re all Catholics orders, but all have different flavors. What makes one order different from anoth-er? Why do Catholics have so many orders in the first place? And if you ordered a slice of Jesuit with a Trappist sauce, would you be al-lowed to talk about how delicious it was?

Join us Thursday, May 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the Adult Education Center for our last meeting of Keeping the Faith for the year. We’ll dis-cuss different Catholic orders and where they came from, with an emphasis on spirituality and difference in day-to-day practices. Find out what makes each order unique, yet united in serving God.

This will be the final Keeping the Faith meet-ing until next September, so if you’ve never joined us before, make sure you visit us on the 17th. As always, we dig deep into Catho-lic topics that you may have missed to help you understand and be able to explain them. Contact Marie Dekowski at 410-879-2670, ext. 126 or e-mail her at [email protected].

Eucharistic Adoration for VocationsTuesday, May 8, after the 8:30 a.m. Mass in Saint Margaret Chapel. Participate in the special day of prayer by coming to the chapel to spend some quiet time in adoration of the Lord.

Ordination Countdown5 weeks left!

In six weeks Dea-con Steven will be ordained a priest. During that ritual, Archbishop Lori will consecrate Deacon Steven’s hands with Sa-cred Chrism. This oil is blessed only by the Archbish-op and only dur-

ing the Chrism Mass. This Holy Oil is very special and is reserved to be used just in Ordinations of bishops and priests, Bap-tisms and Confirmation. A priest’s hands are anointed with Sacred Chrism to prepare him to celebrate the sacraments as He stands in the person of Christ. These hands are consecrated to bless, forgive and conse-crate as a priest of God.

~ ~ ~We have arranged to have buses to go to the ordination. We will leave Saint Mary Magdalen Mission parking lot at 8:15 am on Saturday, June 9 and return approxi-mately 1:00 pm. To reserve a seat on the bus, please sign up at the parish office. A donation of $10 is being requested to hold your seat.
