FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
New Bulletin While it took us a little bit to get to this point, we now officially have produced our first bulletin with our new bulletin company. The bulletin itself is produced by Dee Printing at no charge. The bulletin is produced at no charge because of the advertising that is sold and placed on the back page of the bulletin, so please thank and support our advertisers. Further, because all three of the parishes in the region are produced by a common bulletin company we are now able to have quality glossy paper as well as color photos for all three parishes. This is fantastic! Without the power of the Eastside Region banding together this would not have been possible. I hope you like our first edition of the bulletin; I am very excited about it. Altogether, we are very open to suggestions and feedback of any kind. Special thanks goes to Mary Mathers, as well as Fr. Jason, and all those that contributed to the bulletin this week. As far as deadlines for the bulletin articles, we just ask that you send them to Mary or Fr. Jason 10 days prior to the bulletin date needed.

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
Catechesis:Understanding the Mass Part Active Participationby Cody Egner, Regional Director of Faith Formation
Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to that fully conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy. SC
This famous quote is from the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy and has been the driving force behind much of the reform that has occurred since the end of Vatican II. Despite being arguably the most famous quote from this document, it is also one of the most misunderstood. Many people think that active participation means only general activity such as standing, kneeling, sitting, singing, praying out loud and taking an active role such as being a Lector or Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. These are external modes of participation. One of my favorite quotes is by Joseph Cardinal Rat inger from his book The Spirit of the Liturgy, if the liturgy degenerates into general activity, then we have radically misunderstood the theo drama of the liturgy and lapsed almost into parody. We need to also consider our internal participation.
Fully, conscious and active participation means that we understand the Liturgy and completely take part in it with our entire being, our hearts and souls, in both the Holy Sacrifice and the Eucharistic banquet. We embrace Jesus Christ and join our sacrifices to His on the cross for the glorification of our Father. We attend Mass not for what we get but for what we can give, glorification. This happens not only through general activity, which is a part of it, but also through silent prayer and re ection. Active participation occurs when we lift our hearts up to the Lord.
Many times at Mass we can get distracted by the people around us or personal issues with which we are struggling. Jesus is divine but also human. He is aware of our distractions and will help us focus on the Liturgy if you ask for his assistance. eep returning to him and your active participation will grow.
How much money would it take for you to feel comfortable Some studies have indicated that no matter what you earn, your so called comfort one is just a little bit higher. Most of us seem to believe we would finally feel content if we earned a few thousand dollars more each year. Bishop John Neumann, the fourth bishop of Philadelphia, understood the fallacy of such thinking. He took the vow of poverty he made as a Redemptorist priest so literally that he gave away virtually everything he owned. Once, when he arrived home with wet feet, someone suggested he change his shoes. He answered that if he did, it would be to put his left shoe on his right foot and vice versa since he owned only one pair. At his funeral, he was clad in a new suit of clothes for the first time in many years. St. John Neumann did not choose a life of poverty because he enjoyed deprivation. He chose to divest himself of material possessions because he understood that the real treasures of life could never be purchased. When we value ourselves merely for what we own, we will always be poor. Only when we reali e that God values us for what we are, not what we have, do we become rich beyond measure.

A GOSPEL REFLECTION MATTHEW
by Father Jason Williams
“Get away, Satan!”
By re ecting on the meaning of Jesus temptations we better understand the reality of the mission he comes to fulfill. It seems odd that it is the Spirit who drove Jesus out into the desert, yet it was through this period of fasting and prayer in solitude that Jesus would prepare himself for his role in the Holy Trinity s work of redemption.
His resolve to give everything for the salvation of mankind is tested in the temptations that the Father allows him to experience. He wills that Jesus undergo this time of
trial because his triumph over temptation now will give him strength to remain faithful even unto the Cross.
Satan tempts Jesus in every way possible, yet Jesus refuses to give in to Satan. We believe that Jesus is fully human and fully divine, so in a real way Jesus fights Satan and is victorious over temptation in his humanity in our humanity. Human nature, united to the divine, is capable of overcoming temptation. This victory at the beginning of his public ministry foreshadows the definitive victory he will accomplish on the Cross and through the Resurrection, both of which also involve not only his divinity, but more importantly his humanity. Jesus came as man to save us all, and if he weren t
truly man, then our humanity wouldn t actually be redeemed. The way we can obey his call to repentance and faith in the Gospel the way we can share in his work of salvation is to let his divinity give life to our humanity, strengthening it, purifying it, restoring in it the glory of the image of God. Figuring out how we can better let God do that is the great opportunity that the Church lovingly o ers us each Lent.

What was lost has been foundFr. Jamie has been finding some interesting things in the attic of the parish office. There was a set of full color painted Stations of the Cross. They were wrapped up in newspaper from ! Some of these might be used as part of our church decorations for Lent.
Parish LibraryWe ve been working on cleaning out and sorting through the books in the old parish library near the side entrance of the church. Look for some further organi ation of these materials and how we can better make them available for parishioner use in the coming weeks. Also, Carol Sullivan kindly donated some excellent children s books to the shelves in the back of church. These are availble for anyone to use during Mass or take one home & bring it back later. Thanks, Carol!
