appy March!—Time to get outside and bike & walk around Lyon Park! To celebrate the return of balmy weather, at the March meeting we’ll have three presen- tations on bicycling. First … a representa- tive from Capitol Bikeshare will describe the program and the plan to introduce a new bicycle sharing station on 7th Street near Washington Blvd. You’ve seen these facilities in DC and they’re now starting to emerge in Northern Virginia. With a Bike- share installation in Lyon Park, you could hop on a bike at Clarendon Metro and be in the heart of Lyon Park in minutes. Or, grab a bike in Lyon Park and drop it off at any Bikeshare station in the region. This beats driving in my book! We plan to have a vote on the proposed plan. Then … we’ll hear from a BikeArlington representative about bicycling opportunities and issues in Arlington. Finally … a bicycle expert from a local bike shop will dem- onstrate features of different bicycles and will field questions on proper bike mainte- nance. If you ride, have ever ridden, or are thinking about the slightest possibility of someday riding a bicycle (however remote), you won’t want to miss this! At the last LPCA meeting we heard from Arlington County staff about proposed changes to Clarendon Circle, that huge expanse of asphalt at the intersection of Wil- son Blvd & Washington Blvd. The discussion afterward exposed differing philosophies on traffic and development in our neighbor- hood. We need to continue that discussion because of the effects the changes could have on traffic in our community. Come chime in to the discussion at the March LPCA meeting. We hope to vote on a posi- tion at the meeting. This is important! As I write this it’s three days before Leap Day and I’m getting all verklempt. It’s one of those rare niceties that few people know how to celebrate, but this year, since they happen to be in bloom quite early, I think I’ll just go daffodil picking – a first for me in February! pringtime is here and now is the best time to order a delivery of hardwood or leaf mulch for your trees and gardens from

Arlington County ($50 for 5 yards, a full dump truck or $40 for 2. 5 yards, a half dump truck). If you wait until the peak demand time in April and May, you will have to wait weeks for a delivery. Visit the County’s website and type “Order Mulch” in the search window or you can call (703) 228-6570 to order a delivery of mulch. You might consider sharing a full load with your neighbors and dress-up your entire block!

In addition to improving your yard’s appearance and adding thenatural mulch fragrance to your neighborhood, a four inch layer of mulch covering each tree’s roots promotes tree health and spring-time growth as it:• Improves absorption of rainwater and reduces the evaporation of

soil moisture;• Improves soil structure. Decaying mulch transforms into topsoil

and adds nutrients;• Promotes the growth of feeder roots;• Protects against damage by lawn equipment;• Smothers weeds and grasses competing for nutrients;

• Helps alleviate soil compac-tion around roots;

• Keeps soil cooler in sum-mer and warmer in winter; and

• Produces an attractive color and texture to complement the tree.

“What type of mulch is best for my trees?” Both hardwood and leaf mulch decompose to enrich topsoil. Leaf mulch breaks down faster, thus accelerating the delivery of nutrients to the soil. Hardwood mulch is very attractive and decomposes slower, but can also harbor termites. For that reason, hardwood mulch should never come in contact with buildings.

A word of caution when spreading mulch around your trees. Do not let the mulch touch a tree trunk or cover the flair at the base of the tree. The tree’s bark needs to “breathe” oxygen, which a layer of mulch would smother. Ideally, it is best to spread mulch over the

hank you Susan Robinson, Joe Scheer & IBIS, the wonderful cham-

ber music society based in Lyon Park!!! The IBIS concert held on February 10th was a smashing success! Every seat was taken. Joe Scheer, the concertmaster for the Boston

Pops Esplanade Orchestra, gave an amazing concert perform-ing solo violin partitas and sonatas by Bach. It was a spectacular evening and raised close to $1,700 for the renovation fund. Thanks again to IBIS founders and musicians Susan and Joe for making this happen. Thanks also to the following volunteers, Joey Durishin who worked tirelessly in the kitchen, Chuck Phillips for manfully handling LOTS of chairs, Gene Losa, Michelle Stefanick and Ste-fanie and Bob Hagemann (whose ancestor turns out to have been an accomplished harpist in Paris!), IBIS Board members Maria DiGiulian and Andy Shotwell, IBIS kid Lillie Scheer; and the every energetic Natalie Roy, AND to the Lyon Park Woman’s Club includ-ing Shirley Larson and Gary Putnam for providing treats that were much yummier than the usual receptions.

entire circumference of a tree’s drip line. For larger trees, it may be impractical to spread such a large mulch area but any amount of mulch is better than none!!!

Last year I witnessed the positive impact mulch had on the health of our Lyon Park trees and the trees in the 11th street park behind the Market Commons Barnes & Noble store. The trees stayed healthy and hydrated throughout the summertime and added branches to their canopy. Even the surrounding grass stayed greener. Order mulch now and spread it so your trees will absorb the moisture from

Spring’s showers. See if you notice improvement in your trees’ health this season. Go to http://www.co.arlington.va.us and type “Order Mulch” in the search window or call (703) 228-6570.

he renovation plan for the Lyon Park Community House will be presented to the Arlington County Board for approval at

their regular meeting on March 10, 2012. The board meets at 2100 Clarendon Blvd, Room 307. Public comment begins at 8:30 am. The plans will be submitted for permitting after the board approves the use permit. Ground breaking for the renovation will occur after the Lyon Park Community Center (LPCC) Board of Governors (BoG) approves a final funding plan and selects a contractor. The BoG is in charge of maintaining the grounds of Lyon Park and the Lyon Park Community House and is comprised of members from both the LPCA and the Lyon Park Woman’s Club. Thanks to all who have contributed thus far towards this major community proj-ect! If you are not on the contributors list on Pages 8 & 9, it is not too late to give. Go to the Lyon Park Citizens Association website and click on http://www.lyonparkcitizens.org/Renova-tion.html for everything you need to know about donating to the project.

he next Lyon Park Cooking Class is scheduled for Saturday, March 24th from noon til 3:00 PM. It will feature a three-

subject class: Chicken and Dumplings, Cioppino and a round-table discussion of local food sources. We will make a Southern-Style Chicken with guaranteed pillowy light and fluffy dumplings. Its an adaptation of a recipe handed down from my southern heritage, tempered with the dumpling procedures from “Joy of Cooking.” The second part will be a simple, elegant San Francisco-style Cioppino-a tomato based seafood “stew.” This recipe takes about 15 minutes to prepare and results in a seafood dish that usu-ally leaves people moaning … in a good way. From start to finish,

the Cioppino will be on the table in less than 45 minutes. You will receive accolades for years, guaranteed. The last part of the class- while we sample the two dishes—will be a round-table discussion of local sources for the best and cheapest ingredients from local supermarkets and warehouse stores. Often we learn a lot of tricks from each other in these discussions. For more information please email Gary Putnam at [email protected] or by phone at 703.527.2266. These classes are free and all voluntary contribu-tions are put into the prominently displayed rusty tin can which go to the Lyon Park renovation effort.

Book ReviewTeam of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham LincolnBy Doris Kearns GoodwinSimon and Schuster Paperbacks, NY, NY, 2005 iSBN-13 978-0-684-82490-1, pp 754. Used, $23.99

oodwin’s topic is Lincoln’s cabinet, a thoughtful and deliberate assem-

blage of men of different temperaments, political philosophies, and backgrounds. They were to be both the best heads of their departments, and his best advisors. He welcomed, encouraged and profited from lively debate.

The early chapters paint Lincoln’s competitors for the 1860 presi-dential nomination: New York Senator William Seward, Ohio gov-ernor Salmon Chase, and Missouri judge Edward Bates, and their strengths and weaknesses. None of them took Lincoln seriously as competition. Stunned when they lost, they nonetheless accepted cabinet positions: Seward as Secretary of State, Chase as Secre-tary of Treasury and Bates as Attorney General. At 300 pages this section is too long, but it lays the groundwork for understanding

their mindsets, as well as Lincoln’s. Most people today do not think of Lincoln as a skilled politician but Goodwin demonstrates that he was clearly and forcefully a good politician.

Goodwin’s reliance on diaries, and letters, as well as other writ-ten documents underscores the great loss that generations after us may have in recreating behind the scenes history of events. Lincoln and his contemporaries wrote all the time. They filled their diaries; they wrote to friends, wives, children, and parents; many wrote multiple letters a day. Some letters were written with an eye to history but others are the unvarnished view from the political front lines. Nowhere is this better seen than in General McClellan’s letters to his wife and Chase’s to his friends and family. Both remain impervious to their contemporaries’ low opinions of them. Neither of them accepts responsibility for their actions, and if it were not so sad it would be funny to read their excuses about why the latest disaster is not their fault.

Goodwin also recreates the lifestyle of the time, to include the fetid and deadly place that Washington was, the carnage resulting from the Civil War, the regular fall of death’s scythe among the young and the old from diseases we can scarcely spell, the collegial shar-ing of rooms and beds among circuit riding lawyers and judges. This is a wonderful book on many levels, but not a fast read.
