AMSTERDAM.� De tentamens zijnvoorbij, maar de studieruimte van debibliotheek van de Vrije Universiteitzit behoorlijk vol. Studenten zittenstil gebogen over pc’s die hen verbin-den met het netwerk van de Amster-damse universiteit.

Bij het kopieerapparaat staat SaskiaNooy, derdejaars rechten. „Ik studeeralleen op de universiteitsbiblio-theek”, zegt ze. „Thuis word ik afge-leid. Daar heb ik niet eens een bureau,alleen een eettafel.” De VU heeft ookeen studieruimte op de veertiendeverdieping, verder weg, maar metspectaculair uitzicht. In de tentamen-tijd zit het daar ook afgeladen vol,weet Nooy.

Ook Jason Hatenboer, eerstejaarsfarmacie, studeert het liefst in de uni-versiteitsbibliotheek. Dat gaat de heleweek door. Doordeweeks is de biblio-theek van 7 uur ’s ochtends tot 11 uur’s avonds geopend, in het weekeindetot 6 uur ’s avonds. Dan komen depizzakoeriers langs, omdat het uni-versiteitsrestaurant dicht is. Farma-ciestudent Joël Donkers heeft in destudieruimte wel eens een muis langszijn benen zien lopen.

Over het hele land zijn universi-teitsgebouwen drukker dan ooit. Deuitgestorven faculteit in een oudstadsgebouw, met krakende trappen,galmende gangen, volle boekenkas-ten en vaak lege werkkamers, is ach-terhaald. De afgelopen tien jaar is debeschikbare oppervlakte nauwelijksgegroeid, terwijl het aantal studentenwel met bijna een kwart is toegeno-men.

Die conclusie staat in een rapportvan het campus research team van deTU Delft, dat maandag openbaar is ge-maakt. Het is opgesteld in opdrachtvan de universiteitenkoepel VSNU enbedoeld als verantwoording van watde universiteiten de voorbije decen-nia hebben gebouwd en aangepast.„Hoewel digitalisering studenten instaat stelt buiten de campus te stude-ren, geven de universiteiten aan datde student juist vaker op de campus isen wil zijn dan tien jaar terug”, aldusde samenstellers. „Ontw ikkelingendie een virtuele campus mogelijk ma-ken, hebben niet geleid tot mindervraag naar fysieke ruimte.”

Met hun laptop kunnen studentenoveral werken, maar ze hebben be-hoefte aan direct contact met elkaar.„Strengere selectie, studievoort-gangseisen (het bindend studie-advies), de afschaffing van de basis-beurs en hogere collegegelden of kos-ten van de studie zetten de studentonder druk. Die student stelt op zijnbeurt weer hoge eisen aan kwaliteiten beschikbaarheid van voorzienin-ge n”, aldus het rapport.

C a m p u s l e ve n„Universitair onderwijs bestaat nietuit rijtjes stampen”, zegt Jan Sinnige,voorzitter van het Interstedelijk Stu-dentenoverleg. „Ik lees een artikel enwil met iemand praten over wat ikdaarvan vind. Heb jij het begrepen,

heb ik het begrepen? Dat is een we-zenlijk onderdeel van het campus-leven. Ik heb mijn hele scriptie in deuniversiteitsbibliotheek geschreven.De hele zomer zat ik er met anderen.Je leest dan het werk van elkaar. Hetscherpt je denken.”

Volgens Sinnige staan ze in Utrechtom acht uur ’s morgens rijen dik voorde universiteitsbibliotheek. „En omkwart over acht is het vol.” Dat geldtook voor Groningen, weet hij.

De faciliteiten voor studenten zijnoveral flink verbeterd. Ging tot in dejaren tachtig de bibliotheek nog’s avonds om half zes dicht, nu isopenstelling in weekend en avond destandaard. Maar het is lastig facilitei-ten af te stemmen; de ontwikkelingvan het aantal studenten is volgenshet rapport niet goed te voorspellen.Een steeds groter deel komt uit hetbuitenland. Als de omstandighedenveranderen, kunnen studententallenzomaar afnemen. Vandaar dat niethalsoverkop wordt uitgebreid en hetaantal vierkante meters stabiel blijft.

Groei doet bouwenBovendien hebben universiteitenhun geld hard genoeg nodig. Gebou-wen en inrichting gaan korter meedan voorheen. De gebouwen die deoverheid in 1995 overdroeg aan deuniversiteiten waren sterk verou-derd. Inmiddels is 49 procent van hetuniversitaire vastgoed in goede staat,tien jaar geleden was dat nog 36 pro-c e nt .

Ook zijn andere aanpassingen no-dig, in verband met de groei. Neem deVU: die had in 2000 nog 13.800 stu-denten, en tegenwoordig 23.000. Ophet universiteitscomplex wordt sindsde jaren 60 voortdurend gebouwd.Dat kon vroeger aan de stadsrand vrijmakkelijk, maar inmiddels ligt deuniversiteit veel centraler in de groei-ende stad, pal aan het Amsterdamsezakencentrum de Zuidas.

Carin van der Wal, van huis uit ar-chitect en bij de VU verantwoordelijkvoor de huisvesting, zorgt ervoor datde kostbare vierkante meters zo goedmogelijk worden gebruikt. Ze wijst opeen nieuw restaurant waar studentenkunnen eten, „maar ook samen aaneen tafel kunnen studeren”.

Flexibiliteit is alles: „We stappenook af van de eigen kamer van docen-ten, maar we creëren een gebied waarmensen samenwerken”, zegt ze.

Werken kan overal in het hoofdge-bouw; dat is het voordeel van de digi-talisering. Het gebeurt op de groenebanken in de nieuwe, lichte en uitno-digende entreehal met boekwinkel,in de koffiebar met broodjes, aangrote tafels en in zitjes waar de stu-denten met elkaar overleggen overwerkstukken of een avondje uit.

Studenten kunnen ook terecht inde collegezalen als daar geen collegewordt gegeven. Door het glas kan je zevanaf de gang zien zitten, pratend ofstuderend. Via de study spot app heb-ben ze kunnen zien welke collegezaalvrij is. Dat is maximaal gebruik van debeschikbare vierkante meters, vol-gens Van der Wal.
