Join Norfolk’s Recycling Revolution People have for some time demanded a kerbside collection for glass jars & bottles, plastic food trays, tubs and pots and cartons. Thanks to a new contract, negotiated by all the councils in Norfolk, it is now possible to recycle your glass bottles and jars and a whole new range of cleaned food and drink containers by simply placing them in your green recycling bin (or recycling bag if you use this system). These items are then trans-formed into useful, saleable materials. This change, which is happening across Norfolk, will start on October 1. You should have received instructions via a leaflet left in the lid of your bin last week.

‘Lest We Forget’ Please Support

A special event in St Mary’s Church on 7th and 8th November,

starting at 7.30pm. The production will feature poems and letters from World War One with a display of memories of relatives of Great Massingham residents. These will be accompanied by music, songs and pictures to create a moving commemoration in honour of those who gave so much in the years from 1914 to 1918. Thanks for Making The Village Fete A Great Success The village fete, which was held on the 23rd August, was once again a great success, even with the weather set against us again. A bit of rain wasn’t going to stop us, so stalls were picked up and relocated into the village hall and everyone carried on, as if it was all planned, and around £1,245 was made for OUR village hall. Thank you to everyone who attended and supported us and who kindly donated prizes and cakes - they were all very much appreciated. We couldn’t have done it without our fantastic team of helpers and so I would like to say thank you to Chris Blyth, Danny Chase, Lucy Barlow and James Blyth who were with us all the way, also to Vic Cross, Julie Morters, Penny Thornton, Olly Martin, Linda and Steve Anderson, Sian, Shannon, Elly and Danny Overson, Josh Reeve, Jill Whitmore, Pam Hales, Sean McGee, Katrina Chase, Nancy Kellogg, Judy Goodings, Arthur Allen, Suzie & Deek Overson & their team, Carolyn Gibson Hill & her team, and all other village charities and organisations that held their own stalls. Also a extra big thank you goes to Barry Talbot for letting us paint on his pitch (told you, you would get a mention!) and, finally, not forgetting Mel Whitmore for landing us all in this in the first place. Thank you all once again and I promise I won’t be after you all again next year, as we are going to let someone else have the pleasure to organise the next one!

News from the tennis courts Over thirty children participated in the Tennis and Multi-sports Club Junior Tournaments on Sat 6th September. Louis Carroll won the mini-red (age 4 – 7) competition and Tara Fox was runner-up. Adam Ward won in the mini-orange with Dylan Fryett as runner-up. Jack Pinner beat off a strong challenge from James Blyth in the 12 – 16 age group finals. More news next month, if space allows.

Massingham Bowls Club Report 2014 2014 was another successful season for Massingham Bowls Club. We continue to achieve good results despite a small membership compared to some of our close rivals. The achieve-ments this season were as follows: The Silver Jubilee team, led by Colin Whitmore, won the second division and gained promotion to the first division. The Silver Jubilee team won the Subsidiary Cup competition. The Albert Victor ‘A’ team, led by Malcolm Hipkin, won the league title having been runners-up last year. The Albert Victor ‘A’ team won the League Cup for the second year running. The Albert Victor ‘B’ team, led by Martin Matthews, came within one point of promotion to the second division Work continues with ongoing improvements to the green. This has been greatly enhanced by the replacement of the wooden fence next to the tennis courts with a steel mesh type which has allowed more sunlight onto that side of the green. The Village Hall Trustees met two-thirds of the cost as the fence was in need of replacement and the bowls club contributed the remainder of the cost as it would be beneficial to the club to have the steel-mesh fence rather than a cheaper replacement. Maintenance will continue through-out the winter, as weather permits. Other maintenance is also required to fences, seats, and the storage hut and we will endeavour to complete most of these before the start of next season (volunteers permitting!). Massingham will again host the Albert Victor League Presentation Night (this year on 11th October) and Malcolm Hipkin and Peter Wadham intend to continue as joint League Secretaries next season, if re-elected. We would welcome new members to Massingham Bowls Club next season as it is becom-ing ever more difficult to compete in the league and cup competitions with such a small squad. Anyone, beginners included, interested in joining next season can contact Peter Wadham (520796), Martin Matthews (520707), Colin Whitmore (520609) or Malcolm Hipkin (520387). The winter indoor short-mat bowls sessions on Wednesday evenings, run by Peter Wad-ham start again in October and hopefully will be well supported again this year. This ‘competition’ is open to all and we would welcome new players. If you wish to join in, you do not need any equipment or previous experience as bowls will be provided and instruction is available, if required. We hope to also continue the informal daytime sessions which offer an ideal introduction to the game. If you would like to play, there is no com-mitment, just turn up and play. (Mondays 2 - 4 pm) Massingham Bowls Club is pleased to represent the village in the various leagues and is grateful for the ongoing support from the Massingham Village Hall and the Social Club. We look forward to another successful season next year.

6th Annual Village Yard Sale This year’s village yard sale was once again a great success both for those taking part and for those who supported by buying many of the bargains on offer. As with last year, it was not held over the Bank Holiday week-end and this was in our favour as it remained sunny the whole time. Thirty-four people took part and a total of £170 was raised for the Parish Church funds. This was further swelled by those who used the gift aid envelopes to increase the £5 to £6.25. For the first time, maps were sold at 50 pence each and this helped to grow the coffers by an extra £15.50 (also gift aided). The Village Yard Sale is now an established annual event and benefits the village and its inhabitants in a number of positive ways. I have included one of my photos showing some stallholders doing a brisk trade. Many thanks once again to all those who took part and those who supported with their custom. Carly Ilott

BUSY TIMES FOR THE COMMUNITY CAR SCHEME

The Great Massingham Community Car Scheme is breaking all previous records for the number of passengers it is taking. In July, our volunteer drivers had their busiest month ever, taking 462 trips and, by the end of August, had amassed over 3000 journeys so far this year. This is the first time the 3000 threshold has been exceeded

so early in the year. The Scheme serves 9 parishes in addition to Great Massingham. A glowing testament to its effectiveness was given recently by Mr and Mrs Gardiner of Syderstone in a recent interview for the Eastern Daily Press newspaper (Tuesday 9th Sep-tember). Notable quotes include “I don’t know what we would do if it were not for these volunteer drivers”; “It’s a wonderful service” and “The prices are very reasonable and have not increased for a long time”. Many of our drivers have been active since the Scheme began about eleven years ago and remain some of the busiest. But, retirements are inevitable from time to time and new drivers are being sought to replace those stand-ing down and also to help meet the growing demand.

Driving for the Scheme is one of the most effective and satisfying ways to help make our rural community both functional and caring. Enrolling is easy and commitment is

Gert & Daisy........ We’ve hed a much better month – thank gudnus! That Yvonne out of the owld legion hall hed a bit of trubble. Her husband went orf sailing (posh) and a cupple of nights later the fire alarm went orf. She wus sure thar warnt a fire but she cudn’t stop the alarm even by taking owt the battery. She rang 999 and they sent the fire brigade. The hul crew turned up to turn off the alarm. Apparently awl she hed to dew wus put it in a bucket of worter! The lengths sum women will go to ter get a house full of men when her owld man int thar! On that note we hev heard on the grapevine that there will soon be a new recruit to Massingham Fire Service – they’re already the best looking crew in Norfolk and he’ll keep the standard up – fire alarms will be gawn off awl over the village! Mr Prickerton hed a massage at Congham Hall (posh) and that wus really gud. So gud that Rosemary left him ter go ter the beach with the glass man. Not sure what that wus awl abowt – mebbe he wus testing the sand out. Poor Daisy hed two funerals in two days afore she went on holiday. Her Mum’s brother and one of her Mum’s sisters died within a fortnight of each other. Both wus over 90 so hed a gud innings. Daisy and Sid hed a gud holiday in Guernsey. As Sid ount fly they went on the ferry from Weymouth and thas miles away. They cud hev gone on the plane from Norwich and got there in a cupple of hours instead of a cupple of days! They also went to Herm and Sark. Awl very interesting but a lot of walking. Gert is orf on a dirty weekend with Bert and then orf to Minorca (agin!) but leaving him (AND Daisy) at home. Sid is gawn on his annual weekend away with Malcolm and that lot (also leaving Daisy at home!). We wud loike to send congratulations to Lucy and Jamie on their recent wedding – our best wishes for a long and happy marriage. Hev yew awl bin listening ter the arguments for and aginst Scotland leaving the United Kingdom? We hev and wus very pleased when they didn’t. That did git us thinking that mebbe Norfolk cud declare independence. We wud be happy ter work owt sum rules and regulations. We hev noticed thas gitting a bit nippy in the evenings now so would loike ter remind yew awl ter git your stocks of wood and coal in – (Yvonne that’ll awlso give yer another excuse ter hev one of the firemen round). We must point owt that there are other suppliers abowt!! By the toime yew read this the MacMillan Coffee morning will hev bin and gone. We rekken that’ll be as gud as in past years so congratulations to Chrissie and her team. Don’t forget the ‘Lest We Forget’ commemoration of the Great War on 7th and 8th No-vember in the Church. Well thas awl fer this toime – soon be Christmas. Winter drawers on – yew’ll soon need them! Dew yew keep atroshing! Gert and Daisy.

Thanks From Down Under It is always good to receive positive feedback and the letter below was received from

Annice Henderson requesting its inclusion in the Mallard. Thank you, Annice.

In March I contacted your editor Bev asking if she could place an ad in The Mallard asking for information about my long lost Uncle, Joe Fensom, who once lived in Massingham. I had two replies, one from a fellow genealogist Annie who helped me no end with tracing birth and death registrations. The other was from a long time resident of Massingham, Mike Green. On my trip to England, I met Mike and over a pint and a pub meal he told me more about my Uncle Joe than I ever dreamed was possible - What Joe was like and how he lived and went about his daily business. Mike revealed a whole new world to me about life in Massingham. Joe Fensom's only surviving sister, my Aunt Lucy, accompanied us and she was delighted to know what happened to her wayward brother. I'm sure all she learned will keep her in conversation for a long time to come. All was recorded for future reference. None of this would have happened without the Mallard and it's editor, who bent over backward to make my dream come true, To Bev and dear Mike Green my heartfelt thanks. Service of Thanksgiving for Brenda Thomson

Great Massingham’s St Mary’s Church was full with both villagers and family, on the 13th September, to give thanks for the life of Brenda Thomson who sadly died on 7th August, at the age of 68 years. This was the time when Brenda’s family and the village gave thanks and recognition for the wonderful person she had been and the love and care she had shown to her family, friends and the village of Great Massingham. Brenda and Julian moved to Great Massingham following Julian’s retirement from full-time ministry work and they quickly became involved in the activities in the village, particularly those linked to the Church, making an immense and positive contribution. Brenda did many things in her own right and she was also always there to support Julian in his retired clergy role. She always seemed to be smiling and laughing and was always ready to help.

All the family took part in the service, as well as friends. There were readings, memories from the grandchildren, poems, Bible extracts, lively hymns, songs and reflections. Brenda began her working life at Barclays Bank before marrying Julian in 1968 and later having three children - David, Louise and Rebecca. Her family were her life and she was central to theirs too. Their description of her sums her up entirely ......‘A loving and inspiring wife and mother, loyal sister and great friend to all. Full of love, grace, strength and faith. Always in our hearts.’

Brenda was so strong and showed real determination living with cancer for the past few years. Her perseverance and cheerfulness through so much adversity has been an inspiration to us all.

We will all miss her but we are all thankful that we knew her. Our thoughts are with Julian and the family at this sad time.

Operation Christmas Child – Shoe Box Appeal Every day, if you watch the news or read a newspaper, you see and hear about families fleeing conflict and war, or who are displaced because of natural disaster. There are families in other places, living in abject poverty, eking out an existence, merely trying to survive. It's overwhelming. And what of the children in these places, many of whom are sick, maimed or orphaned ... physically and emotionally scarred through no fault of their own? Do something today, give a little back ..... YOUR gift-filled shoebox, packed with love, could bless a child living in a refugee camp, in a place of devastation or in the poorest part of a town or village in the Third World. It's easy, get a shoe box , and cover the lid and bottom separately. Decide if your box is for a boy or girl and what age group and fill it with little gifts. (Don't forget the £3 re-quested towards freight costs, all explained in the leaflet.) Samaritans Purse, with the help of volunteers, send it overseas to their in-country partners (often local churches) who deliver the box to children, based on need, regardless of their background. Today, YOU can express the love and hope that you share with our heavenly Father for needy children like these. Leaflets are available at the back of St Mary's Church.

CHURCH NEWS Memorial Service for Brenda Thomson This service of thanksgiving took place on Saturday 13th September. A very moving and loving tribute was led by the family who greeted all in attendance. More than a hundred people were in Church. Refreshments were served afterwards and many thanks to all who helped and donated. Benda was much loved and will be sadly missed. A retiring collection raised over £230 which was donated to our toilet and kitchen fund. We wish to thank the family for this donation. Produce Stall Our produce stall in September was again very successful. Our final stall this year will be held on Saturday 4th October at 9-30am in Church. Tea and cakes will again be available. The PCC wishes to thank every-one who has manned the stalls, everyone who has donated and everyone who has bought all the cakes and produce. This has been a successful year and I will publish our yearly total next month. Wednesday teas These will continue until the 22nd October when we have a break for the winter.

Church Cleaning The days for October are Saturdays 11th,18th and 25th at 10am. If Saturday is not a convenient day for you but you want to help, with the Church open every day, it is possible for any of the tasks to be done on another day. Please contact Adrian or myself and we will brief you and show you where the cleaning materials are kept. We really are grateful for any offers of help. Induction and Licensing Service This will take place in St Mary's Church, on Sunday 16th November at 3-30pm. The Rev'd Judith Pollard will be inducted as team vicar and Rev'd Jane Holmes will be licensed as Group leader for the Gayton, Grimston and Massingham benefice which consists of ten churches. This will be our chance to welcome them into our Church and Benefice. Remembrance Sunday

This will be on Sunday 9th November at 9-30am (please note the time).

This will be led by Rev'd Julian Thomson and will have the usual ceremony around the war memorial.
