Time to Sign Up For the 2015 Inter - Village Games. Details on Page 9
So Near,
Yet So Far!
T he Massingham/
Harpley netball
team was one of
twelve teams to enter
the additional Village
Games competition
held at the impressive
UEA Sportspark, on
26th April.
Having played consis-
tently well all morning
the team earned their
place in the final
against Hethersett.
The final was fast and furious but pretty evenly matched which was reflected in
the eleven all draw when the whistle went! An extra five minutes was played to
determine the winner but again it was a draw. A further five minutes was played
but, incredibly, another two goals each meant that it was still a draw!
Having never come across this situation before, the baffled umpires conferred
about what to do next! Despite the competitive spirit, both teams were happy to
call it a draw, especially as some were anxious not to miss their Sunday night fix
of Ross Poldark!
Alas, it was not to be as the umpires decided there must be an outright winner. A
‘Golden Goal’ format was then played in which the first team to score two clear
goals was declared the winner. Hethersett became the champions when they
went on to score two goals in quick succession.
It was a good natured, friendly but extremely close match and Massingham
should be proud of their strong performance, only being pipped at the post after
three lots of extra time! The consolation was …. everyone was home in time for
Poldark! Ali Ward
Good luck to the team in the forthcoming Village Games at Lynnsport.
From left: Michelle West, Melanie Whitmore, Lizzie Case, Stephanie
Davies, Suzie Overson, Donna Linney, Hannah Reeve, Ali Ward.

‘Histry Bits’.... Here is the first of our new regular feature
of interesting stories of Massingham’s past, courtesy of David
Miller and the Historical Society.
SIXTY
YEARS IN
BED!
These days
we’re lucky to
get six hours in
bed, let alone
sixty years, but
things were
obviously a bit
more relaxed in
Massingham a
century ago.
In January 1906 a reporter from a national newspaper inter-
viewed Miss Honor Rye, a remarkable and very fierce-looking
old lady, who had gone to bed in 1846 and hadn’t got up since.
Miss Rye was born in Massingham and, when she reached her
teens, became a housemaid. She was taken ill when she was
twenty-one and the local doctor diagnosed spinal trouble. She
became very weak and, being unable to walk, went to bed.
And there she stayed, year after year, decade after decade,
looked after first by her parents and, when they passed away,
by her long-suffering niece.
She spent her time doing embroidery, reading the Bible and, in
summer, watching new-fangled horseless carriages pass by on
the road outside her open cottage door.
‘Ah,’ she told the reporter with a sigh, ‘they are fine, but I
should not like to go in them, they go too fast.’
She died in 1911, and was buried in Massingham churchyard
where, presumably, she’s still continuing her long rest.

Excellent result for Massingham U14 Boys Tennis Team Our U14 boys tennis players invited the KES team over to Massingham on 10th May for
a Sunday afternoon session. Organised by Ashley Keegan (James Cane’s keen and able
assistant), the afternoon consisted of two timed singles matches for each player plus one
doubles match at the end. The weather was perfect and our village and facilities were
admired by the visiting team. There was some very attractive tennis played on both
courts and parents and passers-by all seemed impressed by the standard of play from
these promising young lads, a couple only 11 years old!
Some of the rallies and
quick fire volleys at the net
were real ‘edge of your
seat’ stuff and a pleasure
to watch, as was the boys’
good sportsmanship.
The final cumulative
score was Massingham
43, KES 17 so our boys
enjoyed their victory …
and the chocolate prizes,
before they melted!
Many thanks to Ashley
Keegan and ‘home-grown’
KES coach, Ashley Swift,
for helping to make this
happen. We are all looking
forward to the re-match!

Strollers...... Strolling the ‘Nar Valley Way’ Sunday 17th May was kind to those Strollers
who Met at the Well. After some bitterly cold
days and heavy rain, the weather was ideal for
a six mile walk from West Lexham to West
Acre. The route took us from the busy and
noisy A1065 down a peaceful hedge-lined lane
to Newton Mill where Dick Joyce once lived
(remember ‘Bygones’). Leaving this idyllic
spot we made our way through Fiddler’s Green
and Broadmeadow Common to the castle ruins
in Castle Acre.
After scaling the ramparts and rolling into the
moat we eventually made our escape, continued through the churchyard and Priory and
headed through water meadows to reach West Acre in time for a well- deserved and en-
joyable lunch at the Stag. Or next walk will be on Sunday 14th June. Andrew Bickerton

Mallard News Parish Council
A Summary of the Chairman’s report
at the AGM, May 2015
Vic Cross thanked his fellow councillors
for all their support over the past year. He
also thanked Borough Councillor Mike
Tilbury and County Councillor, John Dob-
son who have attended regularly and given
good support.
Besides meeting for general business mat-
ters eleven times in the past year the Parish
Council had also hosted a meeting regard-
ing improvements to the Broadband facili-
ties in the area.
Regular correspondence with Norfolk
County Council & King’s Lynn & West
Norfolk Borough Council has been under-
taken. The Council has also responded to
Surveys and Consultations on various is-
sues raised by both National and Local
Government.
Planning remains the most contentious
issue for consideration. On several occa-
sions the Council’s opinion has been at
variance with the Officers of the Planning
Department and ultimately with the deci-
sion of the Borough Council itself.
Speed watch continues to operate in the
village, and two flashing signs advising mo-
torists of their speed have been installed.
The War Memorial was refurbished in
time for the centenary Armistice Day ser-
vice and an application for funding
through the Equal Funded Scheme has
been made to improve the road layout and
small green area near the Post Office.
The Council has been able to continue
supporting groups within the Village in-
cluding the Youth Club, the Biodiversity
projects, the Inter Village Games and other
groups that rely on volunteer helpers, all of
which are providing a valuable contribu-
tion to life in the village.
Correspondence and queries from parish-
ioners has predominately raised concerns
over the wellbeing of wildlife in and around
the ponds and greens, including the level of
maintenance to the greens. Parking is also
another concern. These communications
indicate a strong interest in the parish from
parishioners and this is welcomed.
The Parish Council has endeavoured to
resolve or answer the concerns and seek
appropriate advice when necessary.
The new councillors were welcomed and
the retiring Councillors, Tina Andrew, John
Bridger and Mick Wingell, were thanked
for their valuable contribution stating that
their expertise will be missed.
The Chairman concluded by acknowledging
all those who have contributed in helping to
keep Great Massingham a very nice place
to visit, and an even greater place to live.
Vic Cross, Chairman.
Parish Council Report – 19th May meeting
(Annual Meeting of Parish Council) Nine councillors attended the May meeting. Also
present was the Clerk and one parishioner.
The Chairman gave his report for the year
ended 31st March 2015. Vic Cross was re-
elected as Chairman and Sue Nash was
elected as Vice-Chairman. Both appoint-
ments received unanimous support.
Andrew Bickerton, Karen Wadham and Jill
Whitmore were welcomed to the Council
and appreciation was expressed for the ser-
vice given by Tina Andrew, John Bridger
and Mick Wingell.
The Clerk presented the Financial Report.
Expenditure exceeded income by £9,156.
VAS signs and new street lights had been
purchased at a combined cost of £11,268.
Proposals for improvements to the traffic
system near the school were discussed at
length. Further consideration of this matter
will be needed.
The next meeting will be on
Monday 15th June 2015 at 7.30 pm.

MESSAGE TO ALL PARISHIONERS
‘Please, don’t misunderstand me’
‘Please, don’t misunderstand me.’ It’s a common enough phrase! Have you ever pon-
dered on the number of words that begin with the letters mis? Mis is a prefix, of course,
that can be put before many words in our everyday language – mostly with a negative
meaning especially when it comes to good communication.
We mis-conceive, mis-read, mis-construe, mis-hear, mis-understand, therefore we can
easily miss the point and indeed miss out!
The language and word we use are so important if we want to communicate well. We do
use other ways of communicating with one another such as a handshake, a shake or nod
of the head, a smile etc. but communication is very difficult without words! Ever tried it?
Remember those games of charades at Christmas with the family?
The dictionary defines the prefix mis as: fail - to catch an object, (ball, bus, train) fail to
meet a person, fail to see, hear or understand. Failure to communicate can lead to two
more ‘mis’s’ – mistrust and misery.
If ‘mis’ is so negative what would its opposite be? Well, I suppose ‘catch’ or ‘get’ might
do it. We catch the ball, bus, train, or get the ball, bus, train – ie we ‘get it’! When com-
municating that means we get through to somebody, we get our message across.
If we can all do that, at least more often than not, we might ‘get along’ with one another
much better and together we might even ‘get there’!
All of us ‘mis’ communicate sometimes, quite unintentionally. It encourages me to know
that Christ himself was probably the most misunderstood person ever, even by his own
disciples. When speaking to his disciples he regularly seems to say to them things like
‘do you still not understand?’ If Jesus needed to try hard to communicate with his disci-
ples then how much more must we mere mortals try to communicate with one another!
So strive to communicate well. Try not to be misunderstood or to misunderstand.
A woman and her four-year old son were in church. Her son yelled out “Mummy I have
to pee.” “Shhhh,” his Mum hissed, “we don’t say that. We say I have to whisper”.
The next week the little boy was again in church with his Dad. He leaned over to say
“Daddy, I have to whisper.” “Just whisper in my ear,” his Dad replied! Rev’d Jane

SCHOOL POND BIODIVERSITY PROJECT NEWS
May Day was celebrated at the biodiversity site by planting hundreds of bluebell seed-
lings raised by the primary school children over the past two years. Almost the entire
school took part in the planting (photo by Dick Nally). The children also enthusiastically
sowed seeds of woodland species around the bluebells and also helped to place several
small ‘homes’ for solitary
bees kindly supplied by
Kew Gardens. Before
returning to School there
was just time to look at
the excellent show of red
campion and other species
sown in the wood by the
children last year. These
flowers remain a very
attractive sight.
Several aquatic species
such as European white
water lily and fringed
water lily have recently been planted in the pond and protected from depredation by the
resident Mallards and Moorhens. Meadow species have been sown in newly prepared
areas of the wild flower meadow and ferns, donated by Carl Gostling, planted in dry
shade by the woodland hedge. Our continuing survey of plant biodiversity shows we now
have approaching 100 species on the site.
The next working party is on Saturday 6th June starting at 10 am. Please join us. Mike Jackson
