The Torah states: And they (the Israelites) journeyed from Rephidim, came to the Sinai Wilderness and camped in the desert; there Israel encamped opposite the mountain. Our sages were quick to notice the grammatical inconsistency between singular. Their interpretation of this anomaly offers insight into the nature of the generation of Hebrews who left Egypt, and wisdom for us, their descendants, as well. Even before the enslavement in Egypt, the descendants of Jacob were a contentious lot. The ten elder brothers conspired to sell Joseph into slavery. Then, seeing the reaction of their bereft father Jacob, nine of those brothers demoted their leader, Judah, who took up residence south of the main family encampment. Later, when the ten are to recognize as the long lost Joseph, Ruben chastises the other nine for not having listened to his pleas to spare Joseph years earlier. One reason given for invoking the names of Ephraim and Menasheh when we bless our sons on Friday night is that, prior to Moses and Aaron, these sons of Joseph Torah who actually got along! The situation didn’t seem to improve even after the Exodus. A midrash indicates that the Reed Sea actually split into 12 paths so that each tribe could follow its own course. A verse in Deuteronomy before the commandment to remember the raid of the Amalekites seems to imply that some Israelites were cheating each other in business, a practice that frayed the communal fabric, laying them open to attack. It appears that the only things they could agree upon were their complaints to Moses concerning lack of water, lack of food and, again, lack of water. It was this strife–ridden, plural band of Israelites that came to Mt Sinai. There, while anticipating Gd’s revelation, this divisive throng found unity as “Israel” when it encamped opposite the mountain. The realization that they all would be receiving Gd’s most precious gift allowed them to transcend differences, by giving meaning to their previous struggles and divine structure and purpose for their shared life ahead. As we prepare to receive Torah this Shavuot, I believe it is time for us at MBIEE to take a lesson from our Israelite forbears. We share a love of learning and Torah, the delight of common worship and celebration, the embrace of community when we are in need. As I heard a synagogue president recently say: “The issue is not that we have problems, for no institution escapes those. The issue is how we deal with those problems and treat one another as we move toward resolution.” As it did for our ancestors, let us allow the shared meaning, purpose and Torah call us beyond our characterizations of one another to our higher united calling as a kehillah kedoshah, a sacred and beloved community. Ariana Burrows’ Torah reading class taught both men and women how to chant a portion of the Torah. These readers read from the Torah during one Shabbat this fall, on Mother’s Day Shabbat, and will do so again in the upcoming year.

We had many of our congregants deliver the D’var Torah throughout the year. Members of all ages participated and with the help of Cantor Gordon’s D’var Torah class, we hope to expand this program next year. Shabbat luncheons continue to be an important part of our Shabbat experience and next year we plan to have at least one Lunch and Learn and one “Friday Night Lite” per month.

Judaism is a lifelong journey, and our congregation has a multitude of micro-communities of members involved in every aspect of our shul and community. Dr. Michael Eisman and his committees have developed new and exciting educational and social events. They plan to expand the Adult Education programs for next year. Our Men’s Club, under the leadership of Mark Weiner, and Sisterhood, under the leadership of Ariana Burrows, continue to grow and expand their involvement in our shul.

Tisha B’Av is a twenty-four hour fast day that commemorates the destruction of the First and Second Temples. It is the culmination of a three week period of solemnity known as Bein HaMetzarim, “Amidst the Straights,” which is initiated by the sunup to sundown fast of the Seventeenth of Tamuz, occuring this year &'#A)(-#GL>#5'#0810#*1-#08+#I1K-(&'31'"#./"0#K/++%8+*#Jerusalem’s walls in 586 BCE. Known as the “Great Black Fast,” Tisha B’Av has also became a day of general mourning for other major disasters that have befallen the Jewish people, from the Edict of Expulsion from England in 1290 to the mass deportation of Jews from the Warsaw Ghetto.

This year we will observe this day of commemoration with a special Maariv service, including the reading of Aicha, the Book of Lamentations, on Monday, August 4, beginning at 7:45 P.M. Our observance will continue at the morning service on August 5, at 6:45 A.M., during which we will chant special selections from the Torah and Prophets as well as dirges known as Kinot.

A “Woman of Achievement Award” will be presented to our honoree, Libby Butler Goldman on Sunday, June 8, with our prayer

that she continue to strive with all her humility and love to achieve and accomplish her goals. She is saluted by the entire Sisterhood. Libby married Ron in 1955. In 1959, daughter Penny was born, then Marci and Alan followed. She was hired as a bookkeeper of MBIEE and 36 years later, she retired. Ron and Libby have been members for eleven years. She has been treasurer of Sisterhood for the last four years. Her children are married and she has six grandchildren. Her son, Alan, is a rabbi and lives in Israel. Libby has demonstrated her commitment to the Torah Fund, Sisterhood, congregation and the Jewish community. She and her husband are happy at MBIEE and make many friends and enjoy their life in Jenkintown. Our brunch will be delightful, as usual, and the food ample and delicious. Our work in feeding those who are in need continues. It’s always a valuable effort and a Mitzvah. Everyone can help. We suggest the following: For the Mitzvah Food Project, you may deliver non-per-ishable food to the wooden box near our sanctuary entrance, any time you wish. The collected food goes to the pantry at Beth Sholom Synagogue for distribution to members of the community, both those who come in person and those to whom delivery is necessary. The Mitzvah Project is coordi-nated from the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, ?"&1"$(?%1@(-5A."+9( For the Jewish Relief Agency (“JRA”), you may want 1-(2"6/(8%12(A66%&'(.#$1-&+(#&3(0#7%&'(2-0"(3"6%4"$%"+9(B2"(distribution dates are on Sundays and Mondays each month. That schedule is available on the website jewishrelief.org, or you can call 610-660-0190 for more information. This is a program using thousands of volunteers each year, delivering kosher food throughout Philadelphia and the suburbs. In each case, volunteer efforts help to supply nourish-ment to persons who need help. Give food, time, money-whatever you can! We thank you.

Yiddish Cultural Group MeetingsWednesday, June 11, 2014, at 12:30 P.M.We meet on the second Wednesday of each month (except July and August). Refreshments are served at 12:30 P.M. and the regular program, under the leadership of Sylvia and Len Cohen, starts at 1:00 P.M. This program is free and open to both MBIEE members and non–members. You don’t have to know Yiddish to attend. Just come and participate in a Yiddish cultural program including nostalgia about the “old days,” pertinent jokes in Yiddish and English, family experiences with Yiddish, and anything else attendees can think of related to Yiddish and, oh yes, learn some Yiddish. If you have any questions, please call Sylvia or Len =&%+/"#(">?@4AB@4C>AD"&'"(%+"E:5FF"&9)2+"#(">?@4AB@4?@C@4
