Climbing the Mountain
In his book Rosh Hashanah Readings, Rabbi Dov Peretz Elkins relates the
following story:
After a long and difficult climb up the mountain, the spiritual seekers
stood in front of the great teacher. They had come to ask the question they so
desperately needed to be answered:
“How do we become wise?”
The teacher replied: “Good choices.”
“But teacher, how do we make good choices?”
“From experience.”
“And how do we get experience?”
The teacher smiled and said, “Bad choices.” (p.10).
Judaism does not frown on making mistakes. Instead, our tradition knows
that we are fallible. Our goal is not to be perfect, but rather to learn and grow
from the mistakes we all inevitably make.
Confessing our sins--Viddui-- is a powerful way to hold a mirror up to our
souls - not to make us feel ashamed at what we have done wrong but to seize the
opportunity this spiritual mirror gives us. Confession gives us hope that we can
realize our potential to be even better than we were last year. Viddui teaches us
that our errors are a necessary part of our growth. While it may seem
counterintuitive to be thankful for enunciating all the ways in which we have done
wrong, it really is something to be thankful for because it is exactly what we need
to gain the experience to make wise choices.
I hope that this High Holy Day season helps all of us to grow, to climb,
and to reach the best that is within us.
A good and healthy New Year to us all!
L’shalom,
Rabbi Laurence W. Groffman
Rabbi’s Message

On behalf of our families and the Temple Executive Board, we wish you all a good, sweet new year.
As co-presidents we believe in open architecture and full disclosure of the state of the Temple’s financial affairs.
The budget runs from July 1 to June 30. Below are some key year to date financial information as of 8-31-2016
Income Year to Date Annual Income Budget
$ 310,906.65 $ 1,010,263.00
Expenses Year to Date Annual Expense Budget
$ 133,747.77 $ 1,010,263.00
Net Income $177,158.88
Our income is primarily derived from the following:
The remaining balance of the budget, approximately $285,899 or 29% of the budget, must be collected through
fundraising AND donations, primarily through the High Holy Day campaign this fall.
This year we are seeking 100% participation in the High Holy Day campaign. If you have never given before,
please consider starting with a $36 donation. Keep in mind that 29% of our budget depends on the generosity of
members.
As a community we rely on each other to fulfill our financial obligations. We are committed to providing a high
level of service including programming, maintenance and improvement of our facility and essentials like dues relief.
Without your help and cooperation, our plans for the Temple are jeopardized.
The Temple’s expenses rise every year just like yours do at home. You elected your board to be fiscally
responsible and we are determined to remain within our budget while still providing a beautiful place to worship and an
outstanding congregational life with activities like adult education, religious school, speakers, musical programs and
spiritual support.
When a member of our congregation calls or you receive a letter, please give generously to our fundraising
events. Consider leaving a bequest to the Legacy Circle.
We look forward to 100% participation.
As you know, we have some new faces here at Temple Sholom. Please introduce yourself to Cantor Feibush and
our new religious school director, Michael Melasky. We’re thrilled they have joined our Temple family and we look
forward to a new and exciting year.

TEMPLE SHOLOM JUBILEE WALKWAY
A reminder that installing a personalized brick in
Temple Sholom’s Jubilee Walkway is a wonderful way to commemorate a birth, wedding, anniversary and any
other occasion or accomplishment.
Dedicated bricks will make a terrific gift for life cycle events for those who say “Don’t buy me anything, I don’t
need anything.”
By honoring yourself or those you love, you also support the congregation and the bricks will be there to be
seen for a long time. Engraved bricks are $136.00 each.
Ask the temple office for an application.
Jubilee Brick Walkway
Cantor Feibush
I am often asked, “Are you nervous about leading High Holy Day services? The entire congregation appears,
the service is intense as is the music, and it all falls on your shoulders.” Even when I look out at a packed sanctuary,
nerves do not get to me. If I have practiced my music well, if I have reviewed all the cues with the Rabbi and the rest of
the team, the service will go over well. The technical, bureaucratic elements of leading a service are easy for me, as is
the production of sound.
The only thing that I cannot practice or prepare in advance is the emotional side of my work. Mishkan Tefila,
the current Reform siddur, has a reading that begins, “Each one of us enters the sanctuary with a different need.” How
can I prepare a service for every possible situation? Who will walk in for a yertzeit, the anniversary of a death? Who
will walk in ready to show the most recent pictures of a grandchild? Who needs to share the latest news of a soccer
tournament? When I prepare my services, what is the point at which each person in the congregation will connect?
Standing on the bima, I can see everything. I can see when you cry, when you laugh, when you whisper
something in another’s ear, when you turn a page—it is a powerful place I occupy every Friday and Saturday. However,
I do not always know what is on your mind until I see it in your faces at the service. As the new cantor, I hope you will
see me as someone to share these stories with, someone who cares about your soccer games and family pictures. I
have much to learn about this community and eagerly await your invitation.
This month of Tishrei will feature a number of special leitmotifs due to the holidays. You may recognize a
number of familiar melodies for the High Holy Days unique to this time of the year. For instance, special melodies
include the Great Aleinu, the Shofar blessings, the special High Holy Day Torah cantillation, and the entire Neila service.
I am honored to serve as the carrier of this great musical tradition each year. Looking forward, there is also a special
leitmotif during the holiday of Sukkot known as na’anuim. This melody imitates the shaking of the lulav, and we sing it
during Hallel, Mi Chamocha, and a few other places. I hope you will join us for these holidays.

No matter how you say it…..
Happy New Year!

The Caring Connection helps temple members during transitional times in their lives. Our committee volunteers provide
support after a happy event or a traumatic event. Your involvement could be as easy as a making a phone call.
Volunteers can help to deliver or prepare a meal, or help a member with transportation needs.
Make this organization what you and your family want it to be. A great mitzvah project may be to visit or spend time
with an elderly person. Or maybe bring a pre-paid Shalach Manot basket to a temple member who can’t drive. Just be
involved. It’s easy. You decide how involved you and your family will become.
If you would like to become involved, please contact me through the temple or email me
Thank you to everyone who thinks of us through a tribute. Your generosity helps us fund programs, send meals to those
in need, and present other activities throughout the year.

Caring Connection
Religious School
In my new role as Director of Education at Temple Sholom, I have been blessed to speak with many of you on a
variety of topics of interest within both the school and synagogue. In one such recent discussion, the topic of mitzvot
emerged, specifically with respect to planning our b’nai mitzvah classes. Mitzvah, or commandment as literally defined by
the Merriam Webster source, is both a commandment and a good deed.
Most of us believe that a mitzvah is not only a kind act or good deed but a way of life, an integral part of our
human culture. Teaching and modeling the concept of mitzvot for our children is akin to providing the necessities of life:
food, water, housing, medical care. It is and should be a pathway to the way we respond to people in crises, how we
empathize with those who are suffering and an important element in how we teach our children. As the proverb says,
“Whoever teaches his child ‘the concept of mitzvot teaches not only your child but also [your] child’s child, and so on to
the end of generations.”
As the calendar moves into the cool and stimulating days of autumn with our Days of Awe on the horizon, please
note the following religious school dates when school is not in session:
Monday, October 3 No Religious School (Rosh Hashanah)
Tuesday, October 4 No Religious School (Rosh Hashanah)
Tuesday, October 11 No Religious School (Kol Nidre)
Wednesday, October 12 No Religious School Yom Kippur
Monday, October 17 No Religious School Sukkot
Monday, October 24 No Religious School Shemini Atzeret

SHABBAT AT HOME INITIATIVE A SUCCESS !
GET TO KNOW YOUR CONGREGATION
During the summer, 5 to 12 TSWE members accepted an invitation to share the beauty of Shabbat and Shabbat
dinner at a congregant’s home. Following dinner, all attended services at Temple Sholom. The program, which involved
55 congregants, was a great success. Shabbat dinner hosts are given free range to plan dinner as they wish. If needed,
support and guidance is available from our skilled Shabbat-dinner mentors.
Each time a host plans a dinner, culinary creativity takes over. No two dinners are the same. For example, during
this past summer, hosts served a range of creative foods ranging from elegant fish, chicken and brisket to pasta dishes
and one had an exciting down home bar-b-que with all the
fixings.
Regardless of menu, guests noted that the relaxed and informal style meant
that they got to know new congregants and enjoyed the evening.
And our Shabbat dinners are also VERY SWEET. All guests get
TWO DESSERTS: A quick nosh after dinner and then an oneg at the temple.
One host combined Shabbat with the celebration of America's birthday (see
the 4th of July fruit and marshmallow flag) but all the presentations were original.
We are delighted to tell you that although slots for the fall are mostly filled,
we have openings coming up in November and December. Call 973-857-0695 to
host or attend one of our TSWE Shabbat dinners.

The Moving Story of the Jewish People
“Every Jew is a letter. Each Jewish family is a word, every community a sentence, and the Jewish people at any one
time are a paragraph. The Jewish people through time constitute a story, the strangest and most moving story in the
annals of mankind. From: “Radical Then, Radical Now” by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
The story of the Jewish people is now 5777 years old. It is filled with times of great struggle, times of great achievement
and times of great sadness. But we, and our story, have endured.
There are many things we as individuals can do to ensure our people’s moving story continues to unfold. Each time a
couple stands under the Chupah, each time a Brit Milah is performed or a Jewish child receives his or her Hebrew name,
each time we worship together as a community, we contribute to that story.
We can also add to the story by ensuring that our synagogue and its mission-- to provide a place of spirituality, learning
and community-- is there for future generations. Your Legacy Circle Gift will do just that.
Marlene Tuch will be happy to explain how simple it is to make Temple Sholom part of your estate plan. Please contact
her today at [email protected] or (973) 228-1575.

Rabbi Eric H. Yoffie is the President Emeritus of the Union for Reform Judaism, the congregational arm of
the Reform Jewish Movement in North America.
Rabbi Yoffie served as President of the Union from 1996 to 2012; during that time, he led the Reform
Movement in exciting new directions, moving congregational life toward greater attention to Torah study and
adult literacy. He also spearheaded a major expansion of the Union's summer camping program, and in 2005, he
introduced the Sacred Choices curriculum to teach sexual ethics to teens in camps and congregations.
Rabbi Yoffie announced two major worship initiatives during his tenure. The first, in 1999, was designed
to help congregations become "houses in which we pray with joy." The second, eight years later, encouraged
congregations to rethink their Shabbat morning worship and fostered Shabbat observance among individual
Reform Jews.
Rabbi Yoffie has been a pioneer in interfaith relations and has launched Movement-wide dialogue
programs with both Christians and Muslims. In 2005, he was the first Jew to address the Churchwide Assembly of
the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. Later that year, he harshly criticized the Religious Right for its
exclusionary beliefs but in 2006 he accepted the invitation of the Rev. Jerry Falwell to address the students and
faculty of Liberty University, where he spoke frankly of areas of agreement and disagreement. In 2007 Rabbi Yof-
fie was the first leader of a major Jewish organization to speak at the convention of the Islamic Society of North
America.
Rabbi Yoffie has also been deeply involved in issues of social justice and community concern. A prominent
spokesperson for sensible gun control, he was the only religious leader to appear at the Million Mom March in
Washington, DC. He has also worked tirelessly on behalf of the Jewish state and the rights of Reform Jews in Isra-
el, and meets frequently with Israel's elected officials.
Before becoming President of the Union for Reform Judaism, Rabbi Yoffie served as Director of its Com-
mission on Social Action and as the Executive Director of ARZA (the Association of Reform Zionists of America).
Rabbi Yoffie writes and lectures on Israel and the Middle East, American Jewish life, interfaith Relations,
and American religious life. He writes for Time Magazine, The Huffington Post, The Jerusalem Post, and the Israeli
daily, Haaretz. His articles can be found on his blog at https://ericyoffie.com.

Happy Anniversary..
For more than four decades our congregation has admired
and enjoyed the beauty and artistry of the
Tree of Life Sculpture that graces the main lobby.
Sisterhood had continued the temple’s tradition of commemorating special occasions with
Our New Tree of Life… “A Grove of Trees’, located in the original front foyer of the temple.
This tree is growing and still has many leaves available.
If you have a special occasion, Birth, Marriage, Anniversary, Bar or Bat Mitzvah,
Confirmation, Birthday, Special Honors or any other family happening, please consider
purchasing a leaf or a stone. If you have a future occasion coming up, reserve your leaf and

“Deeds of giving are the very
Foundations of the world.”
Mishna, Pirkei Avot 1:2
Contributions to the funds of the congregation are always
appropriate, welcome and provide important revenue.
Tzedakah is very much a part of Jewish tradition, especially
when it is given to mark celebrations, to offer best wishes for recovery from illness (refuah sheleimah), offer condolences, and
at yahrzeit time, to remember loved ones. These gifts are put to constructive use to enhance the programs of our
congregation.
