Sisterhood

When the Sisterhood of Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu-El held “A Summer Evening of Dessert & Wine” on August 10, the women had the opportunity to better know the synagogue’s new rabbi, Rabbi Charles S. Sherman.

Lois Goldstein and Sandy Pinsly with Rabbi Charles S. Sherman.

Sharon Byer, Vice President for Programming for MBIEE Sisterhood (seated, 2nd row, far right), graduated from the Leadership Institute run in New Jersey in early August by Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. Joining the participants at the institute was Carol Simon, International WLCJ President (standing, far left).

Rochelle Hirt (left), president of the Mid-Atlantic Region of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism, welcomed Annalee Mauskopf, MBIEE Sisterhood’s secretary, to the summer conference held in Voorhees, NJ, on August 10.

Co-President’s Message

October–November 2015 The Shofar Page 3

Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 7:30 P.M.

Dr. Philip A. Cunningham, Director of the Institute for Jewish–Catholic Relations of Saint Joseph’s University, will be speaking on topics relating to Jewish Catholic relations, and the recent visit by Pope Francis to Philadelphia. Also attending will be members from the local Catholic community.

Adult Education

As August comes to a close, I am thrilled to see so many new faces on Shabbat mornings. Each week there are new and different visitors and new members coming to MBIEE to see the “little shul with the big heart” welcoming each and every one. A few weeks ago, we had four rabbis and two cantors in attendance, possibly a new record for a regular Shabbat morning. I was away, but I understand the two Rabbis Sherman had a great Shabbat service recently, too. As Mitchell and I reorganize some of the committees we need your help. Are you able to chair, co–chair, or participate in one of the committees that MBIEE has had in the recent past? While some veterans have stepped up, we would be delighted to have some of our newer members become an integral part of the many activities and tasks that enable MBIEE to continue to serve our community. We have had requests for transportation to and from the shul on occasion and we need to rebuild our transportation committee. There are also many other opportunities for you to help. Please email !"#$%&#'()*+%##,-".! "#! $#"%! &! '"()! ("! (*)! "+,-)!(attention: MBIEE President) with your name(s), email address and phone number indicating the committee(s) with which you would like to work. You will get a reply from either Mitchell or a member of the committee. You may have noticed that last month’s Shofar (September) had many full color photos. Our new contract provides color on pages 1, 2 and 16. With that in mind, the standard page two information was moved to page 13. I hope you will be able to take digital photos and email them to me ($/-01")*+%##,-".) to be included in future issues. Don’t forget to provide appropriate captions. This color upgrade comes at no cost to MBIEE. When I agreed to be co–president with Mitchell Pinsly, I was not planning to relocate in Florida, but as most of you know, the process has been moving along quickly. I anticipate being a Floridian by the end of September as you are reading this column. The past few months, working with Mitchell has been a pleasure. His insight and communication with the congregants has been outstanding. With several past presidents working closely, I know MBIEE is in good hands. I plan to continue working with Mitchell, Joan, Mary and the executive committee through email and cell phone calls for quite a while. I am looking for a new editor of the Shofar after publishing more than 50 issues, but I will continue to desktop publish this Newsletter for the near future. These past 10 plus years, the MBIEE family has been my family, and I will miss your warmth and support. My best wishes to everyone at MBIEE! Don’t hesitate to look me up when you visit Mickey and Minnie on your Florida adventures.

Jewish Theological Seminary Torah FundYour Torah Fund contribution strengthens and perpetuates Conservative/Masorti Judaism throughout the world.

NAT’AH KAREMNat’ah karem is a phrase from the beloved prayer Eishet Chayil, taken from the biblical Book of Proverbs.

Torah Fund will enter its 74th year of existence during the 2015–2016 Campaign year. During that time it will

have raised almost 95 million dollars. Who knew in 1942 that the women of Women’s League would still be playing a major role in the support of our future Conservative Jewish clergy in the year 2015? Well, probably those women did! From the very beginning, those special women understood that as women, we lead the way in setting the religious tone in our homes. They helped to change our movement more than 30 years ago, so that women now also help to lead the way in our synagogues as clergy. They devoted themselves to the perpetuation of Conservative Judaism, The Torah Fund Campaign of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism helps strengthen Conservative/Masorti Judaism through its integral support of Conservative/Masorti seminaries throughout the world. We continue to provide food for those who request it. Many thanks to those who donate into our Mitzvah Pantry collec-tion box in the lobby! We all need to be nourished all year long, old and young. If you would like to volunteer at pantry distributions, please contact me. These occur at Beth Sholom every Wednesday. Each month, JRA delivers cartons of food, to all parts of our region. If you can help, see the calendar (jewishrelief.org) and contact me for more information. In the future, we will have in our building, on Sunday, November 15, a very special Jewish Food Festival, spon-sored by Hazon (see !"#$%&$'()*"+,%-"'). Reservations are required, food will be offered, and there is much to be learned. A new and special social activity is being planned for January. In keeping with the National Day of Service, we will accept donations of school supplies to offer to children whose homes are in need these items as an education aid. This would be a short-term collection project, and all of us should give something to the effort. Think about what you can do to help! Get in touch for more information: Carol Weinbaum, *"'(,$./0%$&*$1 or 215-927-6737. The Social Action Committee wants volunteers! New ideas, new faces, new strengths are needed.

L.E.S. Awardees for 2015

October–November 2015 The Shofar Page 11

Millie ZazoffMillie was raised in the Feltonville section of Philadelphia. She loved sports and was the short–stop for her high school baseball team. Millie married Ray Zozofsky in 1939. They had two children, Honey and Steve. They enjoyed 61 years of marriage before Ray passed away in May, 2000. Millie’s active synagogue life began at a little shul at 3RD & Tabor Rd, called

B’nai Israel, and Honey at age seven wanted to attend Hebrew school. Millie bought Shabbos! "#$%&'(! #&)%&%)!refreshments and made tea on Friday nights. Millie is a past president of the sisterhood. After Honey’s Bat Mitzvah, B’nai Israel merged with a group at 2ND & Cheltenham. There was a lot but no structure. Millie helped and went door to door to collect for the building fund. Ray & Millie became original founders of the new synagogue. Slowly but surely things got done & while *+%!',-..#/)012!$-'!'*0//!#1!*+%!&##.(!3*%4%(!$-'!*+%!5&'*!Bar Mitzvah. The Zazoff’s led a very active & spiritual life at Melrose B’nai Israel. Millie continued to make tea, serve on the board, model in fashion shows, sing & dance in the congregation shows and served on many committees. At the age of seventy she had her Bat Mitzvah, which was one of her lifelong dreams. Her voice could always be heard and the synagogue was her second home. Millie cultivated many friends throughout the years and she has wonderful memories to cherish. Millie is now 99 years old and there are reminders of her hard work and dedication everywhere in our shul.

For their superior dedication to the congregation, the award will bear their names forever. The idea for the award was Warren Nachmann’s, who often has said, “L.E.S. is more.” In 2008, the second presentation of the L.E.S. Award allowed us to honor Stan and Millie Brooks. In 2009, the third presentation recognized Phil and Bea Barrish. In 2010, the L.E.S. Award honored Natalie Gabai and Elaine Weaner, B’M. In 2011, we honored Joe Pressman and our own ‘Invitation Lady’ Harriet Barenbaum, B’M. In 2012, we honored Gunther Kirchheimer and Lionel Lauer. In 2013, we honored Judy Baker and Ernie Gross. In 2014, we honored Jerry and Betty Weiss.
