“Good Queen Bess II”
There are special moments in our lives when it’s good to celebrate. On such occasions we like to get together with someone in order to share our joy. You’ve only got to explore the variety of greetings cards available to realise how important celebrating an occasion is for people - birthdays, weddings, passing an exam. I’ve even seen cards celebrating a divorce!
Whatever we may feel about the institution of our monarchy there are few people who would fail to recognise just what a remarkable person our Queen is. Of course there are lots of things she has never had to worry herself with, unlike many. On the other hand she's not able to enjoy the freedom, peace and anonymity of a walk to the shops, a stroll round a park or visit to a public place without the World and his mate intruding. I don’t think many of us would welcome this. Whether she likes it or not our Queen has faithfully carried out the duties placed before her and been a part of the stability we have been privileged to enjoy in this country for 60+ years.
Revd Bill Ind was the much loved vicar of Popley, Basingstoke, way back in the 70’s and twenty years later he became the Bishop of Truro. At a Winchester Diocesan Conference for clergy he told us how bishops take it in turns to lead Sunday services for the Queen. On one such occasion he made reference in his sermon to ‘those unknown characters who form the back row’ in the TV series Dad’s Army. Some time later when the Queen was on a visit to Truro she took Bill aside and said that since his sermon she’s made every effort to reach ‘those people hidden away in the back row’.
Last year, on her visit to the Republic of Ireland she did something which I think took great courage. She laid a wreath at the memorial for Irish Patriots, some of whom had killed her friends and Lord Mountbatten, a member of her family. It was an act of forgiveness she carried out on our behalf in order to cement peace and express a profound gesture of reconciliation, which went almost unnoticed.
Her personal faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord is unquestioned. She is a Christian from the heart and I’m personally grateful to her for her commitment and service to our nation and to God. She is in her own right a remarkable lady. Long may she reign over us. God bless Good Queen Bess the Second!!
Christian greetings,

EDITORIAL
Welcome to the Jubilee Edition of the magazine. This month you will find details of many of the local celebrations you can enjoy in honour of the Queen’s 60 glorious years as our monarch. In next month’s Souvenir edition, we’d love to share the atmosphere and excitement at these events through your photos and reports. We’d like to invite event organisers and our readers to send us any good high resolution coloured photos taken which capture the event, and a write up - one, or two short paragraphs describing the event. We look forward to seeing and hearing all about the fantastic Diamond Jubilee Events. The deadline
for all submissions for the July Edition is 16th of June.
As ever, comments, criticism and especially compliments to
SHERFIELD FOOTBALL CLUB
A big thank you from Sherfield Football Club to everyone for making our very first Beer Festival such a fantastic event. I think every one who attended would agree that a good time was had by all and despite it being cold we were blessed with the sun coming out in the afternoon as well! We raised just under £500 which was brilliant which will help the team prepare for next season as well as funding some much needed repairs to the pavilion. We will definitely be doing the same again next year, a bigger and better event which will include inviting back our featured group ‘The Swarm’ to return for another gig. Thank you also to those who helped on the day and The White Hart for hosting.

TEXT FOR THE MONTH
St. Paul wrote many years ago to a new church which he had started in Philippi to a group whom he thought of as personal friends thanking them for all they had done for him and his words still speak to us today.
Philippians 3 : 10 & 13 10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, and I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. The NIV Bible
Prayer for the Month
Lord of heaven and earth, forgive us for trusting in our own strength rather than in yours. Forgive us for thinking our way is best, for claiming honour that is rightly yours, for seeking our ends rather than your kingdom, for putting our confidence in things which have no power to save or to satisfy.
Lord of all, teach us that when we feel most weak and helpless you are at your strongest, that what the world counts as powerless is often most powerful, save us from closing our lives to your mighty presence.
Give us renewed faith, greater trust, and deeper confidence in all that you are able to do. Teach us to trust in your strength rather than our own, and give us the courage to attempt new things in your name and to fulfil them to your glory.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
Prayer Points for June………Pray For……….

of her reign.

Mr Darwin’s Tree
St Mary’s Church in Basingstoke
Thursday 5th July at 7:30pm
Fresh from the Edinburgh and London stages, Mr Darwin’s Tree comes to Basingstoke.
St Leonard’s church in Sherfield has organized the showing of this critically acclaimed play as part of its fund-raising drive.
Andrew Harrison, the actor in the original production, plays Darwin wrestling with the conflict between his emerging theory of evolution and his Christian faith. But the play is not just about one man. It addresses issues of science and religion, doubt and faith in a way that is moving, funny, engaging and highly relevant to issues we face today. To round off the evening we will have a mini ‘question time’ session where the audience will quiz a panel on issues raised by the play.
All are welcome. Tickets cost £10 (£5 for students, unwaged and over 60s). Please call 01256 413973. For further information please contact Karen Blakeley on 07977 857064 or email: [email protected].

The Basingstoke Festival of Choirs has been formed to promote and support choral singing in the Basingstoke area. Ten of the choirs (Basing Singers, Basingstoke Choral Society, Basingstoke Hospital Male Voice Choir, Basingstoke Ladies Choir, Basingstoke Male Voice Choir, Hurst Singers, Kingsclere Singers, Overton Choral Society, Steventon Singers, Tadley Singers) along with St Mary’s CE Junior School Choir and Boys’ Choir, will join forces in a chorus of over 400 voices on Sunday 8th July at 7pm in the Anvil to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. They will be accompanied by Hannington Band, with Paul Wright on the organ, and the guest soloist will be Theresa Lunn. The programme will include a selection of great British music from the last sixty years and beyond. Alongside Coronation favourites such as ‘Zadok The Priest’, Parry’s ‘I Was Glad’ and Walton’s great ceremonial march ‘Crown Imperial’, will be more contemporary classics from the likes of Lennon & McCartney, Elton John and Bob Chilcott, all culminating in a rousing patriotic ‘Last Night of the Proms’ finale. So book early to avoid disappointment and help us raise the roof in celebration.
Tickets are available from the Anvil Box Office: 01256 844244

SOLVE Report - An eventful month
The outcome of the Judicial Review (JR), in the High Court in London, instigated by the Manydown Development Company turned out to be emphatic defeat of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council (BDBC). The judgement found that the BDBC acted “unlawfully” in refusing to reconsider its landowning position in relation to the Manydown land and in approving its draft Core Strategy. The High Court also found the Council's actions unlawful in that "the Council has sought to use its control of the Manydown site as a means of delaying the development of land". The Council has been ordered to reconsider its Core Strategy and pay the court costs. The wasted Core Strategy process could cost the taxpayer over £1m. Elections May 3rd - The result of the local council elections was very successful for candidates supported by SOLVE. Congratulations to Chris Tomblin, Independent, who defeated Conservative Councillor, Rhydian Vaughan, by a margin of 776 votes to 603 in Bramley and Sherfield. Voters opted for a change and an independent viewpoint. Councillor Sven Godesen, being a well respected Conservative Councillor mindful of his residents’ views, was elected by a massive vote in Basing. Congratulations to Sven. Commiserations to Jo Walke, Independent, who fought a very hard campaign and came a very strong second to Conservative Councillor Elaine Still by 900 votes to 735 in Chineham. Elsewhere in the Borough Stephen Reid, Conservative Borough Councillor for Buckskin, lost his seat to Labour. Reid was heavily involved in the Manydown controversy and “unlawful” Core Strategy. SOLVE will work with all our local Councillors and hope that in return they put their constituents first. The first full meeting of the new Council is on 17th May and we now look forward to the changes that must be made in order to take things forward. There is still a long way to go and we will be working with CountryWatch and others in order to ensure a fair and transparent process in developing the revised Core Strategy. Our principle aim remains the defence of the Loddon Valley from damaging and unnecessary development. More details can be found on our website www.solveloddon.org. You can register on the website for updates. Follow us on Twitter: @SOLVE2010. Telephone contact Kate Tuck - 01256 324043.

Update from Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council
Election of Chairman and Vice-chairman
At the recent AGM of the parish council Ivan Gosden was re-elected for a fourth and final term of office. Alan Ball was elected as the vice-chairman. Thanks are due to the outgoing vice-chairman, Bruce Jones, for his work over the past year. A full list of committees and appointments to outside bodies is available from the parish clerk.
Vacancy for a parish councillor
There are just a few days left to submit your application to fill the vacancy in the Taylors Farm Ward. Anyone wishing to be considered for the post should send their details to the parish clerk by 6 June including details of your interests and any special areas of expertise. The co-option procedure will take place at the next meeting on 13 June.
Village Green Working Party
The next Village Green Working Party will meet at 2pm at the War Memorial on Saturday 16th June. If you can spare a couple of hours to help this group of volunteers to preserve the Green as an area to be enjoyed by all, then please do come along suitably equipped and attired.
Allotments
The allotments have recently been the victim of a spate of break-ins which seemed to have been aimed at vandalism rather than theft. However, the parish council would like to remind all tenants of the need for security and, in particular, to keep the vehicle access gate locked as a deterrent. There is a padlock on the gate but it is frequently left open.
The next Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council meeting will be on Wednesday 13 June at 7.30pm in the Liddell Hall – all welcome!

Sherfield on Loddon Village Hall
THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES Members of the Village Hall Management Committee wish to say a BIG,
BIG THANK YOU on their retirement to Kathleen Gaiger and Lois Batting
for all the time they have spent and for all the care they have taken in
archiving so much of the literature and other material relating to the Village
Hall.
Kathleen became interested in keeping the Village Hall Archives during
her time on the former Management Committee of the Village Hall when
she realised that a lot of the history of the Village Hall was going to be lost.
Kathleen was then joined by Lois and a plea was put in the Loddon Link
asking for any artefacts, photos, letters etc relating to the Hall. They
received many boxes and files from the retiring Treasurer and Secretary
and many old photos from parishioners. John Dodd was kind enough to
lend Kathleen and Lois some scrapbooks, which had been kept by his
Mother-in-Law, Dorothy Sims.
Minutes of meetings have been filed and many interesting letters, leases
and plans of the Hall when it was extended are all contained in the
Archival boxes and files. They have also kept copies of the local census,
which provides an interesting history of the Village and of the way in which
employment has changed over the years. Photos which have, until
recently, been displayed in the Hall have been added to the collection to
be preserved as part of the Village history.
Kathleen and Lois have kindly offered to help any volunteers who
wish to continue this good work.
Once again, our sincere thanks to Kathleen and Lois.

The Evergreens Club reported by May MacQueen
Our chairperson Jean Bernsten opened the meeting by welcoming everyone to our birthday party. She informed everyone that the coach had been booked for the outing on Monday 10th December to Bashley Park. Other business matters were discussed and minutes from the last meeting were read and agreed.
A delicious birthday tea of fresh cream cakes, cup cakes, chocolate swiss roll and vanilla tray bake was enjoyed by everyone.
Our entertainment for the afternoon unfortunately did not arrive so we had a quiz instead.

PERCY’S PLANT SALE
Amidst all the rain of the previous weeks a window of sunshine lightened up the sky for Percy’s Plant Sale. With the warm rays of the sun came the best turn-out of budding gardeners and cake connoisseurs to browse round the stalls set out in front of Sherfield Village Hall on Saturday 12th May.
Thanks go to all who donated plants, cakes and raffle prizes which helped to make the morning such a success. Thanks also to the Garden Club for their first time attendance and to Bramley Bakery for their presence and contribution to the event. Coffee was provided by P.O.S.H. on behalf of the Village Hall. The net profit, to be divided equally between St. Leonard’s Church, the Village Hall and the Garden Club was £1,100.

THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTE Reported by Ilene Iles
Our May Meeting consisted of three parts – our usual Business Meeting, voting on the Resolution being put to National Conference and our Annual Meeting. Dee Bulpitt opened the Business Meeting and matters followed their usual format, reports given and other matters dealt with. We then proceeded to discuss the resolution calling on the Government to increase investment in the training, employment and retention of midwives in England and Wales to ensure services are adequately resourced and are able to deliver a high standard of care. After listening to the overview from NFWI and much in-depth discussion among Members, the vote was taken – 15 in favour, 2 against, 7 giving discretion to our Delegate to vote after the main discussion at the National Conference and 1 abstention. Our Annual Meeting followed. The Treasurer and Secretary gave their Annual Reports, the President gave her Annual Address, the Accounts were adopted and the Committee were re-elected after two Members stepped down and two new Members were elected to stand. Dee Bulpitt was returned as our President. Business proceedings closed at 3.35 p.m., and were followed by tea and the raffle.

Recently a party of us, including 3 husbands, visited Hinton Ampner, a National Trust property near Winchester to take part in a Bluebell Walk organised by the Trust. This covered about 3-4 miles through woods in the lovely surrounding countryside. As well as masses of bluebells, there were gorgeous views towards the South Downs. This was followed by a well-earned delicious cream tea. Our May meeting was a debate with the motion: ‘This house believes that the British monarchy has run its course’. This was not a debate on abolishing the monarchy, but a belief that it will gradually cease to exist once the Queen dies. However, the main points put forward by the proposing team were very much of a republican nature. Having said that, they stated that they did not necessarily hold the views that they were promoting! It was claimed that the monarchy costs the British taxpayer around £200 million – a lot more than they attract in tourism. However the opposing team countered this with the fact that only the Queen and Prince Philip receive parliamentary allowances and that allowances given to other members of the family has been paid back. The royal family are largely funded by the Crown Estates and the Duchy of Lancaster. Another argument was that young people are not interested in the monarchy and that this will cause its demise, but in a Student Room poll asking whether the monarchy should be abolished a significant 63.04% said no. It was pointed out that both Charles and William will probably be quite old when they ascend the throne and that the people won’t hold them in the same affection as they do the Queen. But the other side said that the monarchy has evolved and adapted over the centuries and will continue to do so to reflect what the people want and expect. They added that the monarchy provides stability, raises our profile in the world and values duty, service and commitment. The Queen is above politics and impartial whereas a president could be influenced politically. The proposers responded by saying that a president can be voted out if found to be corrupt, whereas we are stuck with the monarchy, who are there by privilege, not through merit and represent the class system dominated by the establishment. However, said the opposition, an egalitarian society can still have a monarch, for example Norway, Sweden and the Netherlands. This debate was very lively and provoked lots of comments and discussion, but the vast majority of us opposed the motion and none of us was tempted to change views. Our next event is the annual ramble and our next meeting will be a discussion on women who have faced challenges.

Sherfield and District Gardening Club
As mentioned in last month’s Loddon Link, our next event is a garden visit on Monday 18th June to “Spring Pond” at Laverstoke. There is something for everyone in the garden at Spring Pond, which was created in 2000 by designer Carolyn Sheffield. The planting has been carefully planned in coloured sections, divided by yew and hornbeam hedges. There are also hot beds of reds, oranges and yellows, three ponds, a bank of wild flowers, an arboretum, a conservatory filled with exotic plants and roses and clematis climbing up the flint stone walls of the converted barn. Please meet at the car park at 6pm if you want to come along.
On Monday 16th July we will be visiting Dean House at Kilmeston near Alresford. There’ll be more details about this visit in next month’s Loddon Link but in the meantime if you want to find out more, please visit their website at http://www.deanhousegardens.co.uk
Finally, thank you very much for all the kind donations of plants and help on the day at Percy’s Plant Sale. We had excellent weather and a steady flow of customers throughout the morning.

Changes to Income Support for single parents
Income Support is a benefit for people with no
income or a very low income. Up to now, you could get Income Support if you're a single parent and your child is under seven years old. This is changing. From 21 May, you can only continue getting Income Support if you're a single parent and your child is under five years old. This will also mean you won't be able to make a new claim for Income Support if your child turns five after that date. If you're a single parent under 18, you'll still able to claim Income Support regardless of how old your child is. You may be able to continue getting Income Support for a limited period if you're in a certain type of full time education or training. You could also continue to get Income Support if, for example, you're a carer or a foster parent. Otherwise, if you're claiming Income Support because you're a single parent and your child is over five, your Income Support will stop sometime between 21 May and 18 November this year. You will need to claim another benefit instead. If you're looking for work, you can claim Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA). The Jobcentre Plus will write to you to invite you to an interview to explain what's required. If you're not able to work because you're sick, you may able to claim Employment and Support.
Need further information or Help? Basingstoke Citizens Advice Bureau, (located within Basingstoke Discovery Centre) can help you with queries you have on budgeting, benefits and debt, relationships, immigration, employment issues and consumer rights. We operate a drop-in service Monday to Friday (except Thursday) at 10.00am - 3.30pm and on Saturday mornings at 10.00am -12.00pm.
