‘Where's Wally?’

My two grandchildren, Zoe and Hattie, love the ‘Where’s Wal-ly?’ books. They are puzzle picture books, each double page illustrating a crowded scene e.g. a beach or a railway station. Wally is a tall thin man, wearing glasses, a red and white striped bobble cap with matching jumper, blue trousers and brown shoes. The challenge is to find Wally in the crowd.

‘Where’s Wally?’ came to mind this month as I was thinking about the birth of Jesus. The Nativity story is all about searching. Mary and Joseph had to search for somewhere to stay; the shepherd’s went searching for the new baby; the astrologers from Iran went to a palace in search of the new King.

The Christian Faith involves a personal search. Fewer people today have experienced a Christian upbringing or Christian teaching at school and consequently are examining the Bible evidence and searching for themselves. Take the newly appointed Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Wel-by, as an example. He had little Christian background but through searching found faith in God.

Another interesting point about ‘Where’s Wally?’ is that Jesus, the proph-esied Messiah spoken of in the Old Testament, didn’t fit the expected image and his contemporaries had to search hard to discover who he was. His birth, the son of a maid yet fathered by God himself meant he was God’s own Son (fully God and fully human); his teaching, he spoke about home (heaven) and his Dad (God); he healed people and raised the dead (God’s kingdom in action). Who is this man?

As you listen again to the old familiar carols and the Bible’s account of Jesus’ birth, let me encourage you to listen more searchingly. Ask yourself: Who is this person and why does he care about me?

Finding Wally is very exciting as Zoe and Hattie will tell you. Finding Jesus is also very exciting and life changing. Putting aside the cheap laughs and irritating satire of the stand-up comics, there in the manger at Bethlehem was God himself come to say something to you and me: “I love you, and I want you. Come to me and let me lead you and take you home where you belong and can dwell eternally in my love.” What an amazing Christmas present! It’s all there in the message of the Christmas carols and if you’d like a copy of a Gospel let me know and I will be pleased to give it to you as a gift from me.

Editorial

Christmas is a special time of the year. It’s a time for getting together with the family, for meeting up with friends and for renewing contacts with people that, for the most part, we have lost touch with or only contact once a year with a Christmas card! Yes, there is a special warmth about Christmas and this is evident in the Christmas services, the events and activities that we all enjoy at Christmas time. Details can be found in this magazine.

CAROL SINGING

Carol Singing will take place on two evenings leading up to Christmas.

The first will be carol singing round Sherfield Village on Tuesday 18th December. You are most welcome to join in. We start at 7.15pm meeting outside the White Hart.

The second evening takes us to Sherfield Park on Friday 21st December. We meet at 6.00pm at the Community Centre. Refreshments will be available to keep our spirits up! We welcome singers of all ages, young and old. Just turn up.

Gracious God, we praise you that you came into our world in Christ, fulfilling your promise of old, a fact which we will be celebrating again at Christmas. We praise you that you came again to the apostles in the risen Christ, bringing new hope and great joy. We praise for the promise that you will come again in Christ to establish your kingdom and to give life to all people. Lord, as we busy ourselves with preparation for the Christmas season, help us through all that this season of Advent has to say to us, to gain a new sense of expectation and a new confidence in the future. Help us to be open to all you would do among us, and to gladly respond. Help us to catch sight of the wonder of your coming in Christ so that we may be ready to greet him when he comes again. Our November meeting was our annual music night when we choose favourite pieces of music according to a theme. This time we compiled a list from the following: a song/piece of music which makes you want to get up and dance; makes you want to sing along; makes you laugh; makes you cry; you know all the words to; is a guilty pleasure; no one would expect you to love and finally, you would want played at your funeral! We started with ‘Auld Lang Syne’ which makes one member cry and she did! Other weepies included, ‘Who knows where the time goes’ by Sandy Denny and Fairport Convention and ‘Camelot’ by Richard Harris. ‘I feel good’ by James Brown inspired another to dance, as did ‘Superstition’ by Stevie Wonder and ‘Crazy little thing called love’ by Queen. Popular choices were ‘Simply the Best’ by Tina Turner which could be danced to or sung along to and also ‘When marimba rhythm starts to play’ by Dean Martin. On the humorous side, ‘Master of the House’ from Les Miserables sung by Roger Whittaker was chosen, as was ‘Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh’ by Allan Sherman. Another humorous song actually made one member cry and this was ‘Always look on the bright side of life’ by Eric Idle. Funeral choices included more sombre music as you would expect, for example, ‘Amazing Grace’ by the Scottish Pipers and the Hallelujah Chorus from The Messiah by Handel. We did not have enough time to play all the choices, but we enjoyed listening to a varied selection. Many of us tried to avoid the music of Abba as we guessed many would choose them for their lively songs which can be danced to and/or sung along to, but at the end of evening one member suggested playing some Abba and most got up and danced. A great evening was had by all! A second meeting was held in November as we took part in the annual, nationally organised, telephone quiz. We have to phone for each of the cryptic clues having already been given a clue to start us off. Each time we phone for a clue we can check the answer of the previous question. All the quizzes have a theme and once we’ve guessed the theme it makes it a lot easier! This year the theme was ‘Music’ – names of singers/bands or names of songs. A very merry and peaceful Christmas to everyone!

Village Green Meetings A Village Green meeting is held quarterly at the Village Hall on the first Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm. Topics for discussion include ditches, trees, ponds and recreational areas and all Parishioners are welcome to attend. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 5th February 2013 – do come along.

The Jubilee Oak The Jubilee Oak sapling was planted in November and hopefully will become a landmark feature. In time we would like a bench seat around the tree so if anyone would be interested in giving a donation or sponsoring this, do please contact us.

Notification of proposed works to trees in conservation areas In order to preserve and prevent undesirable changes to the character of our conservation area, you are required to submit a Notice of Intent to the Borough Council before carrying out any tree work, including pruning. The application form can be found on Basingstoke & Deane’s website and you need to complete this at least six weeks before any work starts. This gives the authority an opportunity to consider protecting the tree with a tree preservation order.

If you deliberately destroy a tree in a conservation area, or damage it in a manner likely to destroy it, you could be liable to a fine. You could also be fined if you cause or permit such work. The conservation area in Sherfield on Loddon covers a large proportion of the village. A map of the area can be found by visiting the Environment & Planning section (Conservation) of Basingstoke & Deane’s website.

In a conservation area you do not need to give notice of work on a tree less than 7.5 centimetres in diameter, measured 1.5 metres above the ground (or 10 centimetres if thinning to help the growth of other trees).

The next Sherfield-on-Loddon Parish Council meetings – all welcome! These will be held on 12th December 2012 and 9th January 2013 at 7.30pm in the Liddell Hall.

A number of residents have contacted me about improving safety on the Bramley Road. In my view (but I may be wrong!), we need

to move forward with introducing a traffic island to make crossing at the Reading Road junction safer – and also slow traffic coming into Sherfield from Bramley – while introducing a Community Speed

Watch scheme. What do you think about this? Please let me know.

As Deputy Leader of the Council, it is part of my job to devise the new Council Plan for 2013 to 2017, which will guide what the Council spends its time and money on. It is currently a draft, out for consultation, so please have your say – a link to the Plan is on my website. In addition, a draft budget has also been put forward by the Conservatives. We’ve already driven through £7 million in savings over the last five years. As a result, despite rising costs and the tough fiscal situation, the Borough Council's tax bill has not increased for the last three years. Through further savings we’re proposing, we will freeze your Council Tax for at least two more years, because we believe we should keep our tax as low as possible.

A final word. There has been a spate of burglaries in Bramley recently. I am linked up to the Police on this and hope that something will come of their investigations, but please stay on the lookout for any suspicious behaviour.

The Women’s Institute - Reported by Ilene Iles

Our November Meeting incorporated the usual Business Meeting and a Craft Show and Competition. Dee Bulpitt, our President opened the Meeting, Jerusalem was sung, reports given and Dee gave an early reminder that the January Meeting will be on the 9th January 2013 (second Wednesday, not the first). She also mentioned that Members might, perhaps, consider a visit to the National Needlework Archive at Greenham Common Industrial Estate some time next year.

Dee then presented Certificates to the winners of the different Craft Classes. Valerie Wilson – Knitting and Crochet, Dee Bulpitt - Cross Stitch, Marlene King - Embroidery and Appliqué, Sue Locke – Quilting and Patchwork, Kath Morris - Card Making and also Beading, Joyce Rawlinson – Flower Arrangement, Margaret Lee - Painting (Landscape), Kath Morris - Painting (Floral or Plant Composition). Cups were given to Valerie and Joyce as well as Certificates. Dee had prepared a Craft based quiz which those present completed and this was followed by a delicious tea and the Raffle.

Christmas Day in Camp Bastion

As the end of the year approaches I am looking forward to buying traditional Christmas food, presents, sending cards, watching tel-evision and most importantly being with my family as I am sure many of you are too. It is very different to my preparations for Christmas last year in Afghanistan as there were not many food or retail shops to buy presents from in Camp Bastion. There is however, an adopted family in the men and women who are serving their country abroad and who look after each other in some of the most demanding situations.

The support given by the British Forces to the Afghan people does not stop over Christmas but it did become a more significant time for reflection and thinking of loved ones back home whilst continuing to put a brave face on for the children. In Camp Bastion, the Headquarters took on a more festive look with the dec-orations and ‘mini hampers’ that were sent by my ‘extended family’ at St Leonards Church. Spontaneous Carol singing from sections of the Headquarters and the sharing of food from parcels contin-ued throughout the day.

The tradition of the British Officers serving Christmas dinner to the soldiers does not change just because you are away on Operations. The cook house was superbly decorated for the occasion and as the soldiers entered, helmets were removed to be replaced by ‘Santa hats’. As ever, the Army Chefs were exceptional in producing a splendid traditional Christmas meal for everyone.

Church services in the dozen churches in Camp Bastion were full with soldiers reflecting on the true meaning of Christmas and praying for those they were serving with and for their families at home.

The immense support given from people at home to all those serving, wherever they are in the world, makes Christmas that bit more bearable. I would ask you to please keep supporting the men and women of the Armed Services away from home this year, and their families apart from them at this special time, and pray for their safe return home.

FOUNDATION

(Grants for Children and Young People)

The Foundation was established by George Pitt in 1739 and provides grants for children and young people under 18 in the Parishes of Stratfield Saye and Beech Hill. The Trustees would like to encourage parents of Stratfield Saye and Beech Hill to make use of this historic charity.

All claims, with accompanying receipts, for extra curricular activities, where not provided by the Local Education Authority will be considered sympathetically. The grant is not means-tested and is available for activities such as:

Music and swimming tuition, residential and study courses, textbooks and special

equipment etc.

Beat Officers’ Reports

Speed Enforcement:

No speed enforcement was carried out in October due to annual leave & the equipment has gone to be calibrated.

Vehicle Crime There were 4 incidents in in October: damage to bodywork, attempt theft of catalytic converter & two thefts of diesel from tanks.

Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) the statistics for October are: 10 calls relating to neighbour issues, 2 relating to vehicle nuisance, 2 relating to nuisance youths and 2 reporting nuisance telecommunications. As always I request that any incidents are reported to 101.

The number of incidents in October, for the beat area was 70, a decrease on last month’s 92; made up of 18 ASB incidents and there were 23 crimes, an increase of 4. The number of incidents across the other beat areas ranged from 28 to 61, with Tadley having 133. The number of ASB incidents ranged from 2 to 16, with Tadley having 21.The number of crimes ranged from 5 to 23, with Tadley having 39.

Countrywatch: The area now has a Countrywatch team who will look at poaching, ASB on rural land (misuse of footpaths/ fields, raves) and fly tipping (illegal dumping of waste). Incidents to be reported as any other incident to 101.

Village Hall Matters

SHERFIELD FETE 2013

We did not hold the Fête in 2012 as in its place we had a programme of village events to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

However the Village Fête will be back in all its glory on Saturday, 8th June, 2013. Unfortunately it is not practically possible for the Parish Council to continue running the Village Fete, because of the Financial restrictions on paying out money imposed by Section 137 of the Local Government Act 1972. So in 2013 the Fête will be run under the umbrella of the Village Hall, the only other body capable of providing the financial backing required, whilst still being able to pay out funds to other charities and worthy causes.

It would be splendid if we could find a celebrity to open the Fete who would attract visitors. Does anyone in the village know someone that would fill the bill? The Annual Tea Party for all production and distribution helpers of the Loddon Valley Link was held at Sherfield Village Hall on Wednesday 14th November.

Around thirty volunteer helpers were thanked for their support in distributing 1850 copies monthly to each house in the parishes of Sherfield, Strafield Saye, Hartley Wespall and Stratfield Turgis. The chairman described the growth of the magazine from a single A4 page in 1971 to the magazine as we know it today.

A fun competition was held to identify photographs of 12 gates and doors in and around Sherfield. The result was a tie, with 11 out of 12 correctly identified. Thanks to John Handford for designing the competition.

Many thanks also to the caterers from the Link Committee under the leadership of Ilene Iles and Eileen Leivesley who produced a feast of food worthy of the occasion for all to appreciate. Our thanks finally to the Village Hall Committee for allowing us to use the hall.

SPEEDING TRAFFIC

On the speeding/traffic issue, my comment would be: "Speeding traffic is a big issue for Bramley and Sherfield and it is important that we all work together to tackle the problem. I continue to work with Hampshire County Council for a safer crossing of Bramley Road at the crossroads by the Post Office, but I know that Hampshire Constabulary's 'Community Speedwatch' scheme is also proving effective elsewhere and it may be part of the solution for Sherfield too. In addition, on 15th November, residents had the opportunity to vote for Hampshire's Police Commissioner, who will be responsible for setting police priorities for the next 4 years. I hope everyone made use of their vote!"

DOG FOULING

On dog fouling, my comment would be: "Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council is committed to ensuring that we have clean and tidy towns and villages in our area. It's a team effort between us, Hampshire County Council and your Parish Council. On dog related matters, BDBC provides a dog warden service, which includes enforcement of dog fouling laws. You can get in touch with BDBC on 844844."

Parishioners are also reminded that the Parish Council are elected to work closely with them on local issues. Both of the above issues are being carefully monitored by Council members.

Evergreens Club - Reported by May MacQueen

Our chairperson opened the meeting by welcoming everyone present. After the business part of the meeting Ilene Iles gave a demonstration of

Christmas wreaths of various shapes. Ilene's demonstration was very interesting and informative as she used various materials which included fresh flowers and foliage and also how to use Christmas baubles and ribbon to decorate artificial wreaths. Everyone then had tea and biscuits before ending with a raffle.

The next meeting on the 3rd December will be our Christmas party.

Extension Project St Leonard’s Church

Fund Raising for 2013

On Easter Day 2009 the congregation launched a project to raise funds to build toilets, a kitchen and a small hall to cater for the increasing number of children and families coming to church.

The amount received and promised now totals £175,000 towards our aim of raising £250,000. Sherfield and District Gardening Club

Our 2012 schedule ends on Monday 17th December with our Christmas party. It is always a fun event with a light hearted quiz, nibbles and possibly a glass of wine or two.

Our 2013 schedule starts on Monday 21st January with the return of the ever popular Ray Broughton. Ray has given talks to us twice before on Soil Management and Plant Propagation. This time he is telling us all about the garden year, month by month. This talk is based on his own observations and is backed up by years of scientific study and practice. If it’s anything like last year’s talk, he will have us enthralled and scribbling notes to catch his words of wisdom. Ray was trained at RHS Garden Wisley, is a Fellow of the Institute of Horticulture and a lecturer for the Royal Horticultural Society.

Anyone interested in gardening will be most welcome to join us at the Sherfield Village Hall at 7:45pm.

The Foodbank is a national initiative designed to help local people in crisis through the provision of emergency food supplies. Local care professionals in the Basingstoke area refer people to the Foodbank where they are given food supplies, a cup of coffee and support in finding other professionals who can help them out of their crisis.

The Foodbank allows the general public to donate non perishable, in date, food to support those in need in their local community in a simple practical way.

The Foodbank box is located in The Shop, Sherfield on Loddon. So when you are doing your shopping, you might decide to buy an extra item and ask for it to be put in the box!
