‘Don’t cry, St Valentine’

The 14th February used to be the big opportunity for ‘secret admirers’ to send a Valentine’s Card. It was pretty straight forward stuff when I was at school but in which direction should Cupid aim his arrows in today’s society? With the Church of England saying it’s okay to have bishops who are in ‘same-sex’ Civil Partnerships (whilst rejecting women bishops) and Mr Cameron expressing his determination to introduce ‘same-sex marriage’, it’s enough to confuse a saint. Thank goodness the birds and the bees still know what they’re doing.

In the run up to Christmas I watched the BBC drama ‘Last Tango in Halifax’ to which I gave full marks for the acting, production and script. The plot: An elderly couple, Alan (Derek Jacobi) and Celia (Anne Reid) in their twilight years, make contact via Facebook and arrange to meet. It turns out that they were in love as teenagers but lost touch because of an undelivered letter but now, as widow and widower, they fall in love again and plan to marry. In contrast to Alan and Celia the marriages and lives of their children are in tatters and the off-spring are stunned and challenged by these two elderly love birds.

Just as you think the plot is moving to a happy ending Celia’s son-in-law has an affair and her daughter forms a lesbian relationship! Alan’s daughter, whose unhappy marriage was ended by her husband’s suicide (do please take a break for coffee if you feel the need!), has an affair with a teenage boy and, basically, any man who is passing by. The key sentence in the play is spoken from the lips of the shocked and scandalised Celia who, temporarily estranged from her daughter, accepts her lesbian partner and says: “I only want you to be happy.”

What a profound comment upon the age in which we are living. History, morality and scientific thinking are of little importance, what matters most is to do what makes you happy. Authenticity is about being true to yourself, today. Yesterday and tomorrow are of little consequence. No wonder Cupid is confused. Philosophers have a word for this attitude to life, they call it ‘existentialism’.

Happiness is illusive, a feeling dependent upon our circumstances. Whilst concerned for our happiness God has something greater to give us—his unconditional love made known to us in his Son. When we know that we are loved we can overcome the most challenging situations. Jesus transformed the stable, the cross and the tomb because his heart was pierced by God’s love. This same God wants to be our Valentine and to pierce our hearts too.

Welcome to 2013.

During last year, the magazine saw a continuation of the improvements introduced in 2011/12 - a modern and attractive format, professional printing, more colour to highlight local events and eleven issues of the magazine instead of ten.

We have a strong body of advertisers who monthly make our readers aware of the wide variety of products and services available in the area.

The Loddon Link magazine is supported and guided by a Management Committee which, together with the editors, aims to ensure that readers are given the best possible information about the many activities that are scheduled and reported each month.

Finally, and by no means of secondary importance is the fact the we still have an intrepid team of distributers who deliver the magazine to every household in the area... and, furthermore, the magazine still comes to you free-of-charge... something of which we are proud.

Special Lent Communion at St Leonard’s

Church Electoral Roll - There has to be a complete renewal of the electoral roll, so if you are on the electoral roll you will still need to re-apply. Forms are now available in all of our churches.

Christmas Service Collections - The Stratfield Saye Nativity raised £281.89 and The Crib Service at St Leonard’s collected around £300 including Gift Aid. Both collections will be donated to the Children's Society and Bible Lands.

In December we enjoyed celebrating Christmas at a member’s house, each taking food or drink for a sit-down three-course meal. Later we played party games, listened to readings and opened our ‘Secret Santa’ presents. Apart from being cheaper than eating out, we prefer having the chance to do other things and mix with each other more. A fun evening that went by in a flash! Our January meeting was entitled, ‘Ten Great Things You Would Like To Do’. We wrote a selection of four or five on separate pieces of paper and put them into a tin to be drawn at random. We then tried to guess who the item belonged to. Two of us would like to go up The Shard, London’s newest tall building which is over 1,000 feet and opens to the public this month. Quite a few of us dream of travelling more, seeing the Northern Lights and the Taj Mahal, visiting places like Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Athens, Cairo, St Petersburg, China and Australia.

One would like to be able to sing properly and another drive a racing car around Brands Hatch. Another thought it would be lovely to paint a really good picture and write a novel. Exercise featured amongst the choices – one was to stay fit into old age and one would like to walk the Coast to Coast long distance footpath which goes from St Bee’s Head in Cumbria, across the Lake District and the North Yorks Moors to Robin Hood’s Bay. Many of the choices sparked lively conversation which led onto other things and some of the ideas inspired us to try something new.

Later in January we held our annual planning meeting when we decide on our programme for the year. This will be reported on in the next edition.

Just to remind you, we are a ladies group, most of whom live in Sherfield and we meet regularly once a month, usually on the second Thursday of the month in members’ houses. Our group is informal and we generally have a varied programme of light-hearted and serious discussions, rambles, a safari supper, quizzes and talks. Gateway Award Project Youth Club.

NEW MEMBERS / VOLUNTEERS NEEDED. GAP youth club is looking for new members aged 16 - 25 years old who have additional needs. We also need volunteers to support the running of our club.

A view from the Borough Council

I hope you had a good Christmas – it now seems like a distant memory. This update is devoted to the Local Plan, on which I am spending much of my time at the moment.

As many of you know, I live just up the road in Bramley and I know the issues we all face in our villages – so you can be assured that I am on your side when it comes to controlling development. I want the lowest number of homes possible and am fighting for this on two fronts.

First, national Government rules mean that the Borough of Basingstoke and Deane has to build a certain number of homes a year. Under the last Government, this was set as 945 homes per year. The result of a high number is obvious; lots of greenfield sites have to be allocated. That’s why the Conservative Administration previously proposed that this should be reduced to 594 homes per year. Sadly, as a result of the delay caused by the Manydown issue and some new national rules, this now risks being somewhere in the range 730-770 homes per year. This is still less than 945, but I have called for – and we have now commissioned – some external advice to see if it can be reduced further.

Second, the housing number is used to determine how many greenfield sites need to be allocated. Council Officers – not Councillors – have suggested that there should be no new homes imposed on Sherfield village. However, away from the village, they have also suggested that (1) c. 150 homes are built at Redlands (on the A33); and (2) c. 800 homes should be added onto Chineham (Razor’s Farm and Cufaude Farm, on the other side of Taylor’s Farm).

I shall say it again – I will continue to strive for the lowest number of homes in our area. This means finding other sites for housing. The Manydown Executive Committee, of which I am Chairman, has now promoted the land to the West of Basingstoke for development, which means that housing can be spread more evenly around the Town – Officers suggest over 3000 homes on Manydown.

We have to be realistic though – this doesn’t mean we’ll get away without any homes in our locality. We will have to choose what is most important to us.

If you had to choose, would you rather Redlands or Cufaude Farm was built on? Redlands would have a more obvious impact on the landscape, but Cufaude Farm would mean more homes. This is not an easy choice, but it is exactly the sort of decision that will have to be made.

No speed enforcement was carried out in December due to annual leave. The equipment has gone to be calibrated.

Vehicle Crime There were five incidents in December: theft of number plates, and other various items.

Beat surgeries

It has been decided to postpone beat surgeries for three months. The reasons behind this are:

It’s rare for someone to call in at a beat surgery to report something. There are several other ways to get in touch with the beat team. If there is a particular need for a beat surgery, then one could be arranged.

Sherfield Village Hall / Short Mat Bowls

Short Mat Bowling was introduced into The Sherfield Village Hall in 1997 and we are affiliated to the England Short Mat Bowls Association (E.S.M.B.A.). Through the years The Sherfield Village Short Mat Bowls Club, (S.V.S.M.B.C.) have been involved in many leagues and competitions with varying results. They have also run various competitions and friendly matches in the Village Hall. These, although sometimes hard work, are great fun both for our own members and visiting clubs.

This 2012-13 season we have entered the 'Thursday Two Triple Short Mat League' in which we currently hold top spot by 18 clear points.

Whilst we like to remain competitive, we do not lose sight of the fact that it is a fun game that can be enjoyed no matter what standard you are. To this end we hold a ' Roll Up ' on Friday afternoons where anyone can come along and join in. We really like to see new faces.

UK Foodbanks The Trussell Trust is a Christian charity which organises the Foodbanks. It does not affiliate itself with any political party and receives no government funding. It is non-judgemental and inclusive, providing assistance to people who are found to be in genuine need, people of all backgrounds and of all faiths or none. 13 million people live below the poverty line in the UK.

Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. Trussell Trust foodbanks provide a minimum of three days emergency food and support to people experiencing crisis in the UK.

In 2011-12 foodbanks fed 128,687 people nationwide, in 2012-13 we anticipate this number will rise to over 230,000. Rising costs of food and fuel combined with static income, high unemployment and changes to benefits are causing more and more people to come to foodbanks for help.

The Trussell Trust partners with churches and communities. Our own community can contribute when we buy just one item when we are shopping at our local village store.

Foodbanks help prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems. A simple box of food makes a big difference.

All food is donated by the public and sorted by volunteers. Frontline care professionals such as doctors and social workers identify people in crisis and issue a food voucher. Clients receive three days of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food in exchange for their food voucher. Foodbanks also make time to chat and to signpost clients to other helpful services.

Why do people need emergency food?

Today people across the UK will struggle to feed themselves and their families. Redundancy, illness, benefit delay, domestic violence, debt, family breakdown and paying for the additional costs of heating during winter are just some of the reasons why.

SOLD OUT! An evening of saucy entertainment was greatly enjoyed by the audience when The Olde Tyme Players brought their show to the village hall on Saturday 5th January. This professional fast-paced show, with quick-fire stunning costume changes, comedy monologues and period scenery, delivered a nostalgic evening of songs and cheeky humour. Art for children and adults at Sherfield Village Hall

From Tuesday 26th February local artist Louise Hight will be teaching weekly art classes at Sherfield Hall to children and adults. She has produced work for the commercial and fine art industries for over 30 years, having studied art and design at Kingston to Degree level. She worked as a graphic designer for fifteen years before training in fine art and as a teacher. She has exhibited work locally and taught art to adults at a local art centre and to children as Head of Art at Daneshill School.

Louise is offering 2 classes, Painting and Drawing for adults to run on Tuesdays from 2.30pm to 4.30pm and Kids Art Club ( age 7 to 11 ) to run on Tuesdays from 5pm to 6pm.

The classes offer a fun, friendly and creative environment for all abilities, where you will have the opportunity to explore your creativity under supportive guidance. Demonstrations and one-to-one tuition form the basis for learning techniques and you will then be encouraged to experiment and

It all happens in the garden!

I had the pleasure of attending the Loddon players latest production last month. Joking Apart is the 21st play written by Alan Ayckbourne. It has an interesting setting, in that the play, unusually, spans a period of 12 years and is set in the garden with its tennis court. This offers some challenges to the

staging, which was impressively accomplished in the village hall. Who’d have thought you could get a tennis court in there? To cap it all we were even treated to a firework display!

The play introduces us to Richard and Anthea, the perfect couple, and takes us through their perfect lives as their imperfect circle of friends disintegrates around them. Sven can’t match

Richard’s easy success. Brian is in love with Anthea (unrequited). Hugh falls in love with Anthea (unrequited). You get the idea. Their partners become bitter and depressed, while Richard and Anthea remain largely oblivious to the tension surrounding them. Not only was this a well judged performance all round, but the play presented some hilarious moments, with Sven’s appearance on stage (almost) in his tennis gear one that I’m still trying to forget.

Nick Robinsons directorial debut was memorable for all the right reasons and I can thoroughly recommend an evening out with the ‘players’. We mustn't forget the helpers and the fish and chip supper went down well too. Reported by Simon Boase

Evergreens Club - Reported by May MacQueen

During the month of December we had our Christmas party and were entertained by the children from Daneshill School who sang carols . We then had mince pies, cake and tea before ending with a raffle with lots of goodies to win.

On the 10th December some of the members travelled to Bashley Park by coach to have Christmas lunch and entertainment by the Old Tyme Players. Our first meeting for 2013 on the 7th January was a quiz devised by Gwen Hunt and won by Sylvia Miles.

Discussion also took place about our programme for 2013 and various suggestions were put forward by our chairperson and also a river cruise for August was agreed. Tea and a raffle followed

The next meeting is on the 4th February and is our AGM. also a reminder that we now meet from 1.30pm to 3.45pm

Both our December and January Meetings were chaired by our President, Dee Bulpitt, who welcomed everyone, firstly to our Visitors and Members to our Christmas Party in December, and to our Members to the January Meeting.

The usual Business matters were reported and discussed at each Meeting. Dee reminded those present about the trip to the National Needlework Archive in Greenham Common on the 20th February and Val mentioned our Annual Lunch at BCOT on the 13th February.

In December we were treated to a very amusing talk and demonstration by Terri Reid entitled “WWII Make do and Mend with a Christmas Theme”.

In January we were given a very interesting and informative talk on Wills and Lasting Powers of Attorney by Lucy Watson, a Solicitor who lives in Sherfield, and her colleague. Before the talk, Members were provided with a lunch of soup and sandwiches and after the talk, enjoyed a cup of tea and biscuits.

IN THE GARDEN Winter is the time to step back and evaluate

Many people think that gardening stops at this time of year. Whilst activity certainly reduces (especially when fingers have gone numb!),

there are still plenty of jobs to be done. Winter is an important time for taking stock, assessing what worked and what didn’t and planning for the year ahead. Now is the time to look critically at your borders and ask tough questions: Has that shrub got too big? Do I really like that plant I got on sale for 50p? Didn’t those two clash? Do I really need 15

daylilies? This is the point where, if you haven’t made notes or taken photos during the year, you’ll wish you had. These can be invaluable when staring at a bit of bare soil thinking, “What on earth was growing there?” The mind plays tricks too, persuading you that what was there was half the size. Surely room to squeeze in another dahlia?!

With the structure of the garden laid bare it is much easier to see how a bit of re-jigging could improve matters. Thinning out and letting more air circulate between plants will help prevent mildew and fungal infections. Lifting and dividing perennial plants gives them a new lease of life and new plants can then be grown from the leftovers. Let’s face it, the sight of a neglected shrub with long leafless branches and a forlorn flower hanging on grimly at the end is never a good one. Strategic pruning of dormant trees and shrubs in winter allows you not only to control the shape and size of the plant but also to vastly improve flowering and fruiting.

And if you’re thinking “there’s still loads of time for all that”, just remember that when winter comes, spring isn’t far behind......

Licence to Occupy

The extension to the Licence to Occupy covering the Community Centre expired 31/12/12. Following initial discussions with Basingstoke and Dean Borough Council (BDBC) we have agreed that as we are planning to incorporate the Community Centre and the Football Fields (see item 2 below) in a single lease, a short delay in completing the combined lease agreement is considered acceptable.

Football Fields

BDBC has confirmed that they have concluded their negotiations with Croudace Homes Ltd for the purchase of the football fields adjacent to the Community Centre. Discussions will begin in early January with BDBC and our Association on arrangements for the SPCA to manage and operate the football fields and associated change rooms.

Opposition Razor`s Farm

An opposition group – STAND AGAINST RAZOR`S FARM (SARF) has been formed by residents of Sherfield Park to oppose the proposed development by Croudace Homes Ltd to construct 425 houses opposite Sherfield Park on Razor`s Farm on Cufaude Lane. The SPCA is supporting the residents in opposing this development which, if completed will create a major traffic problem as it is anticipated that the traffic on the proposed development will use Sherfield Park as a quick and convenient way to access the A33.

Chineham Parish Council held a public meeting on Tuesday 8 January at the Christ Church Chineham to listen to the views of those who may be affected by this development.

Sherfield and District Gardening Club

Our February speaker on Monday 18th is Kelvin Mason who will talk to us about “Vegetable Growing”. Kelvin is a lecturer from the horticulture department at Sparsholt College, Secretary of the Hants Federation of Horticultural Societies, and an established garden club speaker. He has a detailed knowledge of soil structure and soil preparation and will be giving us lots of advice on digging, seed selection, sowing and aftercare. A must for those of you with vegetable gardens and allotments.

Continuing the ‘grow your own’ theme, on Monday 18th March, our speaker is Peter Barwick. Peter worked for many years in the commercial soft fruit industry and later was head gardener at Blackmoor Nurseries, so he is just the man to talk to us about
