Historic County: West Sussex GR: TQ 025019 The 35-bed self-catering Littlehampton youth hostel was part of the £10 million Littlehampton East Bank redevelopment driven by Arun District Council alongside a range of partners including West Sussex County Council at the turn of the millennium. The Fisherman’s Wharf riverside development project was realised in 2003. The hostel was included within the central visitor attraction here, on the upper floor of part of a new block including the Look and Sea Heritage Exhibition and visitor centre with shop, Harbour Lights Café and viewing tower. The riverside scheme also included 170 residential units, RNLI lifeboat station, Harbour Board offices, New Town square and public riverside walkway, thus tidying up an unattractive area of derelict harbour wharves and disused storage yards and improving the town’s presentation. YHA leases the property. Fisherman’s Wharf, Littlehampton. The 2003 youth hostel occupies the upper floor of the right hand side of the Look and Sea Heritage Exhibition and visitor centre. Its entrance is just out of sight to the right. The two hostel windows above the blue Harbour Lights entrance indicate the positions of the dining room and lounge; most of the other windows on this side are bedrooms (author’s photograph, May 2013)

The hostel opened on 1st April 2003, with an official opening held, probably on 22nd May 2003. Originally a satellite hostel run from Arundel, Littlehampton hostel has now gained full status and is open to families and individuals throughout the year. There has latterly been a little reorganisation of guestroom and hostel office facilities. Les Snyman has been manager since at least 2013.
