OVENIA Hostelling International SloveniaHostelling International Slovenia (HI Slovenia) is the only national representative of Slovenia in the International Youth Hostel Federation (Hostelling International – HI). HI is a non-governmental and non-profit organization active in about 90 countries in the world. The organization works closely together with UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization), WTO (World Tourism Organization) and other important international organization – also it was proclaimed the sixth largest organization that offers overnighting. With 4 million members it is one of the largest youth organizations in the world and is the only network of youth hostels with about 4.000 objects for spending the night, 1.5 million beds and 30-40 overnight stays annually.

HI has high standards for youth hostels, based on the treatment of the guests, security, cleanliness and privacy. But it is not its only role. Since it was established in 1932 it encourages young people for better intercultural understanding through informal education and peace, global friendship and environmentalism. The international organization, with a strong support of its national members, it offers interaction among youth of various nationalities and cultures, exchange of experience, getting to know their peers and after all themselves.

For this the organization has international programs for youth, above all the ones with lesser chances, through which we spread the mission of Hostelling International, which remained the same since 1932:

To promote the education of all young people of all nations, but especially young people of limited means, by encouraging in them a greater knowledge, love and care of the countryside and an appreciation of the cultural values of towns and cities in all parts of the world, and as ancillary thereto, to provide hostels or other accommodation in which there shall be no distinctions of race, nationality, colour, religion, sex, class or political opinions and thereby to develop a better understanding of their fellow men, both at home and abroad.

HI Slovenia, with more than 40 hostels around Slovenia, ensures safe, budget friendly and quality boarding for all types of groups. This includes the educational field trips with various themes (history, art or language courses) as well as extracurricular activities for schools, students, sporting and other groups – or simply friends who want a joint active holiday.

The Hostel Pod Skalo is a family run business that can host up to 21 people. It is set in a town-house, which has the tradition of hosting people and offering them overnight stays since the 18th century. There are 10 rooms available, each with a separate bathroom. Guests can choose between rooms with a large double bed (there are 6 such rooms), with separate two beds (there are 3 such rooms) or a room with three beds. All rooms feature a free wireless internet connection. The Hostel also features a joint room, internet corner, kitchenette and both a washing and drying machine for laundry.


The Hostel Pod Skalo is located in the sport centre of Kamnik, with a swimming pool, tennis courts, volley ball in the sand, the camping grounds… and it’s just 300 meters away from the medieval centre of Kamnik, but in a green surroundings. There’s a castle “Stari grad” raising on a 515m tall rock above the Hostel, with walking trails leading right from the hotel’s patio up the rock, taking you into pristine nature. On the trail you will experience many wonderful look-out points, where you’ll see the town, its surroundings, and the not so distant Alps (the town of Kamnik, the Kamniško-Savinke Alpe, national capital of Ljubljana, and all the way to Julijske Alpe). This pristine nature is our advantage and added value that all out door lovers and all who like to spend an active vacation in nature.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Breakfast: We offer our guests a rich self-service breakfast: coffee, tea, milk, cocoa, orange juice, 4 types of cereals, fresh fruit, jam, butter, honey, pate, cheese, melted cheese, ham, salami, black or white bread. Upon request we also prepare eggs, but can tend to special needs as well.

Lunch / dinner: For lunch and dinner we offer daily menus to our guests. These include soup, main course (meat with a side-dish), salad and pastry. We can adopt the menu to the wishes of our guests. We also offer meals for vegetarians and vegans.

Local sights and attractions

Velika PlaninaVelika Planina is the biggest Slovenian mountain with open pastures for cow grazing, you can reach it either on foot or by a cable-cart. Amidst unspoiled nature you will be able to enjoy fresh mountain air and enjoy the great view on the Kamniško-Savinjske Alpe – a part of Alps that stretches to central Slovenia. A magical herders’ village with its chapel of Marija Snežna is a special architectural heritage of Slovenia and the only cultural landscape in the entire European Alpine area. You can decide upon a guided tour, cycling amidst pristine nature, or simply enjoy the view and air. The herders’ village will have to offer great buttered milk and polenta, or you can buy fresh cheese or cotton cheese.


Arboretum Volčji PotokArboretum Volčji Potok is the biggest park in Slovenia, that is open the whole year. There are about 3.500 species of trees (with leaves or pines), as well as permanent or authentic plants. Walking in the flower fields and in the shade of century old trees relaxes the body and soul. The park is most visited during the May 1st holidays, with 2 million tulips blooming. The organizers also prepare interesting side events, like the exhibition of dinosaurs, tropic butterflies, insects, etc. There are also different workshops about the art of gardening.

The town of KamnikKamnik is a lovely medieval town with a rich history. The former capital of the province of Kranjska is known for the chapel Malograjska kapela, on a hill above the town, with a great view of the Alps. You might be the one, who will save the cursed girl Veronica, that is sleeping underground, beneath the castle and protects the treasures of the days gone by.

Terme SnovikSnovik is the health spa at the highest elevation in Slovenia and have also received the EU Daisy sign. They are in the valley of Tuhlja, just 7km from the centre of Kamnik. They’re the right place for all, who want to relax in thermal water or enjoy a skilled massage, to suit the body and soul.

Budnar’s house – museum houseBudnar’s house is a museum in a pleasant village of Zgornje Palovče above Kamnik. Its history dates 350 years in the past, when they were cooking in a “black kitchen” with an open fireplace that is still preserved today. You can also see the house room with a maple wood table and an always warm furnace that gives you the feel of the simple life that made its way into 21st century as part of our heritage. The museum features many events all year around, from workshops to exhibitions… each thematically organized and each different.

Kamniško Savinjske AlpeFrom the valley of Kamniška Bistrica and up to the tallest peaks of this part of the Alps, there are well marked and maintained trails that will tempt even the most die-hard mountaineer.

Natural healing forest TunjiceIn the village of Tunjice you can find a natural healing forest. The energy sources and a well with healing water will boost your well-being. The forest is in the near of St. Anna’s church in Tunjice and just a few minutes from the center of Kamnik. There are several springs of energy and one of living water on a slightly tilted ground.
