NAPLAN Online for Years 3 and 5

Early next term, students in Years 3 and 5 will sit the NAPLAN Online test. We are one of around 500

schools who will be transitioning to the online platform this year. For this reason, our test period will be

from 15 to 25 May, to allow for all students to complete the tests in the computer rooms. Reading,

Conventions of Language and Numeracy will be completed on the computer for Years 3 and 5. Year 5

will also complete the Writing test online but Year 3 will complete a pencil and paper test. Please read

the NAPLAN Online: Letter to Parents which follows my report and please do not book any holidays or

medical appointments during the NAPLAN period if possible.

2A Assembly

Congratulations to the students from 2A for your wonderful singing of Firework and for sharing your ‘pop

art’ inspired colourful artworks.

Staffing Changes for Term 2

Next term we will welcome Ms Juliette Ra to the permanent teaching team as a three day per week

English as an Additional Language or Dialect (EAL/D) teacher. Mrs Rebecca Ranasinghe will teach 1/2S

whilst we undertake the Merit Selection process for a new Assistant Principal.

I would like to thank Mrs Penny Bulgin for her contributions to the Library program. From next term she

will be taking on a full time Library position at another school.

Thank You and Farewell from Mrs Scott

Dear Lindfield Community

I will sadly farewell your wonderful children and their teachers at the end of this term to assume a new

role at Chatswood Public School. It has been a privilege and joy to belong to the Lindfield community

over the past six years and I wish to express my sincere thanks for all your support, partnership and

friendship. I am exceptionally grateful for the opportunity I had to work with students and staff at Alma

Public School, our remote partners in Broken Hill throughout 2016. It’s a place where you can almost

hear Australia speaking! It’s been a heartfelt delight to share these experiences with you and your

children. Lindfield is an exceptional learning environment

where diversity is celebrated and quality is part of the school

culture and I will greatly miss its brilliant teachers and

leadership team. May I wish you all every success and

happiness in the future- I’ve no doubt your fabulous children

will continue to ‘ROAR’. Their energy, curiosity and sense of

wonder has always been my inspiration.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy

2018 NAPLAN Online: Letter to Parents

In 2018, students at your child’s school will complete the National Assessment Program Literacy and

Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests online.

This is the first year NAPLAN tests will transition from traditional paper tests to online tests. A school

readiness test conducted in August and September 2017 helped inform the technical readiness of NSW

schools for the move online. A small proportion of NSW schools will sit NAPLAN Online in 2018. Federal,

state and territory education ministers have agreed to full participation over the next two to three years.

NAPLAN Online will create new benefits for teachers and students including faster results, greater student

engagement and better assessment.

NAPLAN tests, both paper and online, will assess skills taught through NSW syllabus content and scored

on the same NAPLAN assessment scale.

The results of the tests provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will

be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s

level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum

standard.

The NAPLAN Online tests will be conducted from 15-25 May 2018.

Students may be considered for exemption from the tests if they:

are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language

background other than English, or

have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit

their capacity to participate in the tests.

All other students are expected to participate in the tests.

Disability adjustments which reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom may be

provided. Large print and braille versions are available to meet the needs of individual students. Access

to disability adjustments or exemption from the tests must be discussed with the school principal and a

parent or carer consent form must be signed.

Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by

parents in consultation with the school principal. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, a parent

or carer consent form must be signed. Please make an appointment with the principal of the school your

child attends if you would like to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN.

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) manages personal and health information in

accordance with NSW privacy legislation. For further details, please refer to NESA's Privacy

Management Plan at: http://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au

Additional information about NAPLAN Online can be found at: http://www.acara.edu.au/assessment/online-

The Resilience Project

We are very happy to announce that the Resilience Project will be

keys to resilience, which are gratitude, empathy and mindfulness.

Students will take part in lessons starting from Term 2 and will engage in a student workshop run by the

Resilience Project. Staff will participate in professional learning in Term 2 and a parent workshop will

take place in our School Hall on Tuesday 7 May from 7- 8:30pm. We highly recommend that you attend

Stage 2 Excursion Walking Tour

Year 3 and 4 students enjoyed their Walking Tour excursion of the Rocks. As part of the History unit,

‘First Contacts’ students took part in the tour ‘Early Sydney, Before and After Colonisation’ and extended

their knowledge of the first settlers and how they lived in The Rocks when they first arrived in Australia.

They were also fortunate to visit the Museum of Contemporary Art which they thoroughly enjoyed.

Killara Schools Partnership Video Conference

Yesterday our school leaders took part in a Video Conference with students from our

KSP network including LEPS, Roseville, Killara, Killara High and Beaumont Road.

Students discussed how to ‘lift school spirit’ and some

of the ideas included having a school mascot, a school

hand shake or wave and many other creative ideas.

Charlotte, Tahlia and Eliza said that having this video

conference reminded them that they are very lucky to

be at LPS as we have at least half the things that were

mentioned.

What is Persuasive Writing?

You may have heard the term Persuasive Writing in relation to NAPLAN, but what exactly is it and how does it differ from Narrative Writing?

A persuasive text is designed to convey the writer’s point of view. It could be formal or informal and could draw on the writer’s personal experience or demonstrate acquired knowledge about a particular subject or issue.

The main structural components of the persuasive text are:

• introduction• 3–5 body paragraphs (arguments) • conclusion.

There are different styles of persuasive topics which require different types of response:

• arguing for or against a statement, e.g. Cats are better than dogs.

• advertising or recommending something, e.g. your school, a great book, a particular sport, etc.

Narrative and persuasive texts are quite distinct from one another because of their aim or purpose. A narrative text aims to tell a story, while the purpose of a persuasive text is to put forward a point of view about a particular topic and actively persuade.

TOP TIP:Use the introduction and the conclusion wisely. Don’t just repeat what you are going to say in your body paragraphs. A Sizzling Start and an Ending with Impact are essential if you want to persuade the reader.

ACTION ACTIVITY:Collect your junk mail and discuss the purpose of each item with your children. What are they trying to persuade you to do? What do they all have in common? Do they have a Sizzling Start or headline to catch your interest?

Anaphylaxis at Lindfield Public School At Lindfield Public School in 2018, we have a small number of children with a potentially life threatening

allergic reaction. They are found across our school from Kindergarten to Year 6.

How can parents help these children?

If possible, choose alternative sandwich spreads to peanut butter and

Nutella. If you have no alternative, inform your child that these foods can trigger

an anaphylactic reaction.

Reinforce the school’s NO FOOD SHARING message.

Please note, no students are allowed to bring glass bottles to

school for safety reasons.

Band

Open Rehearsal and End of Term Party!

Thank you to all our wonderful musicians for a fantastic start to 2018! This week, all band rehearsals are open rehearsals - please feel free to pop in to listen to your children’s band. We will also be having our end of term parties at the last rehearsal for each band, afternoon tea or breakfast provided for members by the committee. Hope everyone has a lovely break - don’t let your instrument become a stranger!

Music Camp 2018

Whilst it is hard to believe that we only have a few more days of Term 1 remaining, it is even harder to contemplate that the annual LPS School Music Camp is just 9 weeks away (7 weeks into next term). As previously communicated, it is taking place from 17 to 19 June.

Like last year, the camp is being held at the Narrabeen Sport and Recreation Camp down the bottom of Wakehurst Parkway in Narrabeen. The schedule is similar to prior years and will kick off with the Concert Band arriving for their afternoon rehearsals on Sunday 17 June. Some of the strings’ older participants will also come down for Sunday afternoon activities.

The majority of the ensembles (JB / IB / Mozart / Amadeus / Bach / Vivaldi / etc) will arrive on Monday morning 18 June and be transported to the venue by coaches that will be departing LPS very early on the Monday morning.

Some children will return to LPS on Monday evening and others will stay overnight for an evening of social activities and laughter.

More details about your specific children and the timetable for each of the ensembles will come out after the holidays along with the permission notes, payment slips, and medical paperwork. Look out for it all early in Term 2.

We are still looking for a couple of volunteers to help us with the transport of instruments there and back for camp. This entails renting the truck, securing a driver volunteer, coordinating the bulky instrument loading from LPS on Sunday 17 June and transferring to Narrabeen. Then the same process in reverse to return the instruments back to LPS on Tuesday evening / Wednesday morning. If you are able to help, in any part of this process, please let the Band Committee know [email protected] - Many thanks in advance.

Orchestra 2018 - EOI and Volunteer

Our Music Director, Megan Lipworth, is keen to get the ball rolling for the 2018 LPS Orchestra! If your child is interested, please send an Expression of Interest email to [email protected]. (Orchestra is open to both Band and Strings members) We also need a parent to help Megan coordinate the orchestra, including sending emails and organising afternoon teas for rehearsals, which will be held on Sundays once a term. If you think you could help out, please get in touch with the Band co-convenors.
