Deputy Principals’ Message
National History Challenge
Last term, eleven Year 4 students took part in the 'National History Challenge' which is an Australian essay
writing competition. All students researched and wrote essays, based on the theme 'People and Power'.
Congratulations to all students who took part and thank you to Mr Cyrus Katrak for facilitating the program
for the last four years.
We are excited to announce that this year Zara W has placed first in NSW in the Year 4 category - an
amazing achievement! Zara will be attending the award ceremony at Hyde Park this Thursday. Please see
Zara's submitted essay on Malala Yousafzai further on in this version of the Lines.
Nude Food Day
On Tuesday 5 November the SRC and Garden Club are organising our very first LPS Nude Food Day.
The aim of Nude Food Day is to try and reduce the huge amount of waste that we send to landfill. We
would like students to try and have all their food packed into reusable containers instead of plastic bags,
aluminium foil or plastic.
Please see later in the Lines for the Nude Food container suggestions.
Save the date - K-2 Athletics Carnival Thursday 31
October
This is a date for the calendar as per the note handed out this week. Please mark in your diaries the K-2
Athletics Carnival on Thursday 31 October. Students will play some fantastic games and have some races
on the Palm playground. Make sure not to miss what is always a wonderful day.
Kindergarten Orientation Sessions
The first of our Kindergarten Orientation sessions will take place on
Thursday 7 November. Parents are asked to drop students off at
the appropriate classroom promptly at 9:30am, as will be indicated
in an email which will be sent out later this month. Parents will then
head to the hall to hear from guest speakers. At 10:30am parents
will then tour the school with their children, guided by our very
capable Year 5 and 6 students. Our Kindergarten 2020 students
will ‘stamp’ their passport as they find and visit various areas of our
school.
At this stage, it is expected that all enrolment documents for Kindergarten students beginning in 2020
have been submitted to the front office. It is imperative that this is done by 25 October in order to plan
the Orientation Sessions.
Selective High School in 2021

through the school. The note which was handed to students can also be found on our school website
under the Notes tab.
Extension Class Testing
This week, nominated Year 4 have been working extremely hard to complete the testing phase of their
Extension Class application for 2020. All students adhered to test conditions and gave their very best
efforts throughout. They should be congratulated!
BYOD iPad Information Night for Year 4 Parents and Carers
In 2020, we will continue the ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) program in all of Stage 3. This program
allows for collaboration and it redefines learning. We will be hosting a parent information session on
Wednesday 30 October 2019 at 6:30pm in the School Hall. The aim of this session is to explain how the
iPads will be used in the classroom in Stage 3 and provide parents with helpful ways to manage their
child’s iPad use at home. If you are parent of a child who is moving into Stage 3 in 2020, this will be a
valuable session for you to attend.
Years 3 - 6 Assembly - 3F
This week we were entertained by an item from 3F. Students had completed some underwater artworks
and had learnt some fantastic adjectives. After a few difficulties with technology 3F showed great resilience
and performed admirably for their peers, family and friends. Congratulations!

People and Power: Malala Yousafzai
By Zara W
This essay is about a girl called Malala Yousafzai who lived in Pakistan
when a group called the Taliban was in power. The Taliban scared people
with their guns and violence. The Taliban said that girls shouldn’t be
educated; Malala did not agree. Malala’s words were her power against
the Taliban. Malala’s power is not only in her words but in her courage.
Malala risked her life by speaking against the Taliban online and on
television. This is an important example of people and power. Even though
Malala was targeted and shot in the head by the Taliban, she didn’t stop
protesting.
The Taliban are a group of people who gained control of Pakistan and Afghanistan from about 1996. The
Taliban were trying to get people to follow their interpretation of the Islamic law, for example, for girls not
to go to school, men to wear beards, and women to wear veils. The Taliban have power using guns and
violence. Sometimes, they took people who they thought had done the wrong thing and they would hold
them down and whip them. They also blew themselves up with bombs at girls’ schools to scare the girls’
families into doing what the Taliban wanted and to prevent their daughters getting an education.
Malala Yousafzai, born in 1997, is a girl who happened to live in Swat, a district in Pakistan, while the
Taliban were in control. When Malala was a young girl, her father was a school principal. She knew how
important school was. In 2009, Malala wrote an anonymous blog for BBC Urdu about what it was like
living while the Taliban were in control of her hometown. The Taliban were furious about the blog. They
soon found out who the writer of the blog was. On 9 October 2012, the Taliban tried to silence Malala by
finding her on her way home from school and shooting her. After flying to the UK for treatment, Malala
was able to recover from her injuries. Instead of being silent and scared, she decided to use her words to
continue to fight. In 2014, Malala won the Nobel Peace Prize for raising awareness about the importance
of girls’ education. As she became famous, she used the fame to make people take notice of her
message.
One of the things that Malala has done with her power is to set up the Malala Fund. Through this Fund,
she was able to open a new school for Syrian refugee girls. This would allow the girls a place to feel safe
at and get an education. In her ‘Malala Day’ speech to the United Nations on 12 July 2013, Malala spoke
about education giving power and using it to create unity and togetherness. Malala said “So let us wage
a global struggle against illiteracy, poverty and terrorism and let us pick up our books and pens. They are
our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one pen and one book can change the world.”
Both Malala and the Taliban wield power. The Taliban have power through guns and violence. This type
of power cause people to feel fear and resentfulness. Even though it seems that the Taliban have power,
without a weapon, they become normal. However, Malala’s power comes from what she does right for
the girls who have education, which gives them hope for the future and to have choices in life. Malala
has power that lifts people to have a better mindset because she is doing work that is rousing changes
for girls’ benefits.
I think Malala is an inspiring person with amazing and uplifting power. On the other hand, the Taliban’s
power is used for terrible deeds. I hope you have learnt about Malala Yousafzai. Whose power inspires
you? Malala, who is brave, courageous and smart? Or the Taliban, a power of hate, cruelty and
forcefulness? I would always choose the one who makes us pick up our books and our pens…to change
the world.

Work on Display
Anaphylaxis at Lindfield Public School At Lindfield Public School in 2019, we have a small number of children who could have a potentially life
threatening allergic reaction. They are found across our school from Kindergarten to Year 6.
How can parents help these children?
Choose alternative sandwich spreads to peanut butter and Nutella. Inform your child that
these foods can trigger an anaphylactic reaction.
Reinforce the school’s NO FOOD SHARING message.
Please note, no students are allowed to bring
glass bottles to school for safety reason

LINDFIELD LAPS - SAVE THE DATE!
24 NOVEMBER
Join us for the pool’s major fundraiser of the year. We need the whole school community involved –
students, ex-students, parents, teachers and friends of LPS.
How does it work? A team of swimmers complete as many laps of the pool as they can in 40 minutes.
There is no minimum or maximum number of laps that each team member may swim.
Who can be in my team? Anybody! A team has a maximum of 5 members and can be your friends, mum,
dad, grandparents, aunt, uncle, siblings…
Do I need to be a good swimmer? No! We’ve had young ones on noodles, fabulous grandparents and
everyone in-between. It’s about having fun with friends and family and raising much needed funds for our
school pool.

What is the Strings Trial Day?
The Strings Trial Day is for students interested in joining the 2020 Strings Program, particularly those who
are new to strings and are unsure about which instrument they might want to play. Students will have the
opportunity to try out the violin, cello and/or viola.
We will also be looking for parent helpers to help the trial run smoothly. Please let us know if you can assist.
Hired instruments required Monday 11 November
We ask that all families who have hired a violin, cello or viola from the Strings Program, please deliver these
instruments to the School Hall COLA between 8:30am and 9am on Monday 11 November. We will be
using these instruments for the Strings Trial. In addition, we will use this opportunity to check all the
instruments and flag them for future maintenance (bows, strings etc).

2020 School Travel Applications Now Open
To assist with any enquiries you may receive regarding student travel applications, we have provided
some information below.
Applications for student travel in 2020 opened on Friday, 11 October 2019.
Students progressing to year 3 and year 7 no longer need to re-apply if they:
are continuing at the same school
are residing at the same address
have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.
Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their
entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification via email.
Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will
receive a notification advising them to re-apply.
Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.
If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to
https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails
Applications need to be submitted before 31 December 2019 to ensure student entitlements are
updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31
December 2019, the system will automatically cancel an entitlement/card and a new one will need to
be issued.
Students in the Opal network applying for a SSTS or Term Bus Pass entitlement for the first time will
receive their card at their nominated postal address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2020.
