workforce. Portugal ranks on Top within the

EU countries in number of PhDs per 1,000

inhabitants.

40% of students in tertiary education are

enrolled in engineering, sciences and health.

The increase rate in the last 3 years is about

30%.

Portuguese are known for commitment to

work which places us below the EU average

regarding working days lost per year.

Technological Infrastructures

Why choose

Portugal?

Telecommunications have been

a major priority in Portugal. The

country has now 95% coverage

of broadband infrastructures.

The net increase in the

broadband penetration growth for

Portugal is above the OECD

average (Dec 2010).

The percentage of fiber connections in total

broadband is already 6% for Portugal,

ahead of countries such as Netherlands,

Finland, France, Spain, Italy, Poland,

Austria Germany or Belgium.

The Internet is also well developed.

Portugal is a United Nations case study in

terms of e-Government and its availability

of public services on-line.

attract expatriates.

As a result Portugal is ranked #2 in the

Migrant Integration Policy Index 2011.

“Portugal is unique in attracting young

graduates and executives.” Carlos

Brazão, Cisco Portugal

EASE OF DOING BUSINESS

• Major public services are on-line;

• Portugal is considered by the United

Nations, a case study in e-

Government;

• Average time to set up a firm is less

than 1-hour

the commitment of the Portuguese Government, of the multilingual skills of the

local population as well as its professionalism and ability, and proven success

in innovation areas.”

Chris Dedicoat, Senior Vice-President for Europe, Cisco

One of our main strategic lines was always to shorten

R&D

Portugal hosts several world class R&D institutions of excellence.

AIBILI - Association for Innovation and Biomedical Research on Light and Image

is a private non-profit organisation, founded in 1989, established to support technology

transfer to industry. AIBILI is dedicated to help the development of new products for

pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, with special expertise in Ophthalmology.

BIOCANT is an applied research and development center that provides innovative

services of Biotechnology relevant to Life Sciences and promotes the development of

R&D in consortium with national and international companies to the creation of new

products and services. The Centre drives technology transfer between fundamental

research centres of known competence and biotech companies.

BIOCANT is the R&D centre of BIOCANT PARK, the first Portuguese technology park

dedicated to Biotechnology.

CNC - Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology is a non-profit biomedical research

center at the University of Coimbra. CNC brings together scientists from the Faculties of

Science and Technology, Medicine and Pharmacy and from the University Hospital.

The CNC is structurally subdivided in ten departments (Cell Biology, Biophysics,

Biochemistry, Neurochemistry, Neuropharmacology, Molecular Biotechnology,

Neurobiology, Microbiology, Vectors and Gene Therapy, Graduate Studies and Advanced

Strategic Studies), each headed by a director, and the Laboratory of NMR.

R&D

Portugal hosts several world class R&D institutions of excellence.

IBMC – Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology is a multidisciplinary research institution

that was formed in 1997 with the aim of bringing together researchers working within the

University of Porto and affiliated hospitals to produce a unique environment promoting

research in the life sciences.

IGC - Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência’s scientific interests are focused on the genetic

basis of development and evolution of complex systems, privileging organism-centred

approaches in experimental models that include plants, yeast, flies and mice, and on the

genetics of complex human diseases. A strong theoretical sector (Estudos Avançados de

Oeiras) is one of the Institute’s specificities, the others being the quality of the services, and

a strong investment on international exchange in the form of graduate courses, workshops

and symposia.

IMM - Instituto de Medicina Molecular is a Non-profit Association, whose associate members are

the University of Lisbon, the University of Lisbon School of Medicine, the Santa Maria Hospital, the

Portuguese Institute of Oncology, the University of Lisbon Foundation, the Association for Research

and Development of the University of Lisbon Medical School, and the Oriente Foundation.

An important added value derives from the close interactions between IMM, the medical school and

the University hospital. These entities established a consortium to promote translational research by

providing a framework to develop pre-clinical research, clinical research and new technologies,

which is excellently positioned to disseminate new discoveries to university education, to the biotech

and pharmaceutical industry, and to medical practitioners

R&D

Portugal hosts several world class R&D institutions of excellence.

INEB - Instituto de Engenharia Biomédica, has four working Groups:

The Biointerface Group focus on the tissue-material interface, at cellular levels.

The Bioceramics and Glasses Group focus on the research to the development of novel synthetic bone

grafts for the treatment of clinical situations associated with bone trauma, bone disease and ageing.

The Biomedical Imaging and Vision Computing Group addresses the Image Analysis in Medicine and

Biology program and the Vision Computing and Biomedical Modelling.

The Signal Processing Group unites researchers in signals and systems engineering and clinical

monitoring.

IPATIMUP - Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology main goals are: research in human

pathology, with particular emphasis on oncobiology; training of graduate students, technicians,

residents and specialists in pathology; diffusion of scientific knowledge and teaching of undergraduate

students; providing sophisticated diagnostic expertise in the different fields covered by the Institute:

pathology, oncobiology and population genetics

ITQB - Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica is a research institute of the Universidade Nova

de Lisboa. Its mission is to provide advanced training in an interdisciplinary environment through high

quality research work in Chemistry, Biology and associated technologies.

Since 2001, ITQB together with Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência and Instituto de Biologia Experimental

e Tecnológica (IBET) constitutes an Associate Laboratory
