2OCTOBER LEONARD

Page 5: LEONARD, issue 33, October 2014

When the taxi dropped me off at Porte de

Clignancourt I was confused and frustrated. I

was sure I had made it clear to both concierge

and taxi driver that I wanted to be dropped off

to the Paris Flea Market. Instead, all I could

see when I left the taxi was stand upon stand

of t-shirt and sneaker sellers and fake ones to

add insult to injury. With a sigh I thought I’d

better do some exploring in case everyone but

me had the drop off “right”. A few minutes of

walking the perimeter did nothing to ease my

frustration. But a minute after that I headed

in behind the fake glamour and brand sellers

and very quickly what appeared to be on the

outside just another Victoria market quickly

became the most extraordinary indoor and

outdoor labyrinth of antique, period and

vintage design I had ever experienced. Quite

literally every period, category and medium

was represented by hundreds of stall holders

and larger dealers from the very small to the

expansive. If one was searching for a name so

comprehensively inappropriate for what it

was describing this was a good example – the

largest antiques market place in the world

described as a “flea market”!

For lovers and collectors of anything “not

brand new” and indeed those with an eye

for modern design this market should be on

your “bucket list”. I planned to spend half a

day there, spent two, wanted to spend a week

and probably could have happily camped on

site for a month while I obsessively covered

every arcade, side lane and shopfront in the

vein hope of reassuring myself that it was

indeed possible to cover every square inch

of Les Puces. Aside from the completely

satisfying aesthetic and historical overload

I experienced over those two days I was

excited to see the very obvious conversion

many of the traders were making from “Louis

gilt” to “Cardin design”. Put another way, the

market was very clearly beginning to express

the changing tastes of Parisians and tourists

alike – period and beautiful furnishings

were still plentiful but just as plentiful was

European design from 1950 – 1990. And not

only was the “conversion” exciting to me but

also the sheer volume of post-war design

that was available. Clearly the French have

recognised the value (and resale value) of

good design and manufacture even if it does

stem from a factory and it seems to me too

that Australians are also slowly but surely

realising that an extraordinary light fitting

from the 1970s or an unidentified chair from

the 1950s can and should have a collectable

value if good design and manufacture are

present.

Despite the fact that modern retailers are

churning out light, weak and pale imitations

of many of these great designs I left Les

Puces feeling buoyant about this new era of

collecting that I believe is right in the middle

of finding a new harmony between the

quality old and the quality new.

MY BOOKSHOp

The editors at Phaidon publishing house have developed a fi ne reputation for

conceiving and producing big, beautiful resource books that present often-

complex subject matter in a highly engaging format. Their latest work, Art In

Time, covers 150 of the world’s most important and infl uential arts styles, schools

and movements. From Western art traditions, to the ancient practices of China,

Japan, India and the Middle East, to Africa, Latin America – and more.

This fascinating overview that starts with 21st Century and late 20th Century art,

the infl uence of new technologies, and important movements such as the Young

British Artists and contemporary Aboriginal art, and extends way back to the

Classical Age of Third Century AD to the Fifth Century BC. In between, readers

will enjoy art’s journey from Pop Art to Post-Impressionism, Realism to Rajasthani

painting.

“The intersections between the political, religious, economic and cultural

timelines of disparate societies and art practices show that art is not created in

a vacuum,’’ the book begins. “There is no right or wrong way to understand the

history of art, and the ever-shifting modes of constructing and deconstructing the

discipline defy stagnation.’’

Art In Time is a must-buy for anyone who loves art, collects art, works with art, or

practises art. An ideal Christmas gift, it is a treasure to keep forever.

“In just three lots more than a quarter of a million dollars in diamond jewellery changed

hands so I’m thrilled with the buoyancy in high-end jewellery” commented John

D’Agata, head of Fine Jewellery at Leonard Joel. Undoubtedly the auction highlight

was lot 193, the extremely rare octahedral diamond pendant designed by Streeter &

Co. of London and commissioned in 1888. The rarely seen natural form, the pieces’

history and perhaps also the auspicious year of 1888 combined to generate a final

price of $53,680 (IBP). Only two lots later lot 195, an impressive 5.20 carat diamond

realised $146,400 (IBP). The theme of high-end diamond jewellery continued when a

pair of classic diamond studs realised $65,880 (IBP). John D’Agata commented; “The

combination of our Sydney office and our commitment to presenting the most important

jewellery in the local market has worked beautifully and we are now transacting more

jewellery items over $50,000 than any other local auction house. We are very proud of

that!”. The 345 lot auction realised an impressive total of 815,000 (IBP)

Take a very early open-faced pocket watch with exquisite enamel

decoration and add to that a musical component and you quite literally

have collectors champing at the bit. Lot 142 was just such a pocket watch

and with a fair estimate of $4,000 it realised more than seven times

that to finally sell to an international collector for $28,060 (IBP).

With so much press attention devoted to diamonds, precious white metals and lavish

wristwatches, we take a step back and look back here on beautiful period jewellery,

constructed between 1837-1901, that realised less than $2,000 at auction. As tastes

change and wax and wane, Victorian gold jewellery represents an exceptional collecting

A rAreEMILIO PUCCI COlleCTION

Leonard Joel in conjunction with the Modern Design department is proud to present one of the most comprehensive Australian collections of vintage fashion by the renowned Italian designer, Emilio Pucci (1914-1992). Covering key periods from the 1950s through to the 1970s, the collection includes iconic designs from the famous 1960s silk jersey psychedelic printed shift dresses, through to terry velvet beach capes, swimwear, bags, silk scarves, ties and other ephemera. Pucci was known as ‘The Prince of Prints’ - his designs were worn by high society figures and film stars from Elizabeth Taylor to the unforgettable Marilyn Monroe, who was actually buried in her favourite Pucci dress. Pucci’s designs combined luxurious fabrics with extravagant, vibrantly coloured prints. It was the prints themselves that were most groundbreaking - his colour palettes, quirky patterns and bold designs were exceptional. Pucci’s use of silk stretch fabrics showed an intuitive understanding of the female form - subtle yet at the same time seductive and exciting. This rare assemblage has been lovingly

collected over the past 20 years by a single owner based in Melbourne. highlights from the collection include a 1960s silk jersey printed pant-suit, reputed to have belonged to one of Cary Grant’s wives; air hostess uniforms for the American Braniff Airlines and an original letter from Pucci to one of his clients, signed in pen. The collection also features several outrageous capes and incredible silk jersey dresses, even some early labels from the ‘Emilio of Capri’ collection. There is also a silk blouse of the same type worn by Samantha (Kim Cattrall) in an episode of Sex and the City, as well as unopened Vivara perfumes, still in their original silk Pucci covered boxes. The gentlemen won’t miss out either, with a selection men’s printed silk ties to choose from and a luxurious burnt orange velvet Ermenegildo Zegna designed blazer with Pucci printed lining.

This truly is a once in a lifetime vintage collection - items such as these will never be available at the same time again!

A number of auction records were set

amongst the diverse results for all periods

achieved at the September 16 Fine Art

Auction. Solid prices were set by Arthur

Boyd ‘s bijoux sized Nebuchadnezzar

Falling on Gold, lot 68, at $17,080 (IBP),

William Dargie’s delightful oil Twilight

Menton, lot 157, leapt above its quote

fetching $4148 and in the contemporary

realm lot 4, Imants Tiller’s Nature Speaks

was firm at $12,200. Joining these ranks

was lot 112, Shaun Gladwell’s Apology to

Road Kill… which at $10,370 surpassed its

fairly recent primary market price.

The desire for Mirka Mora continued

unabated with her three pairs of 1980s

charcoal drawings achieving an elevated

hammer each time selling for $3,904,

$4,392 and $6,710 respectively. Similarly

the appreciation for sculpture continued

its rise with collectors realising the great

value of acquiring on the secondary

market Dean Bowen’s Aeroplane Boy , lot

55 for $23,790 and Greg Johns’ Horizon

Figure, lot 53 for $8540, both of which

are auction records for the artists.

Broken hill artists also fared well with Sam

Byrnes’s early Open Cut-Broken Hill, lot

14 sold at its upper estimate for $7,320

whilst Pro hart’s Flowerscape, lot 167,

trounced its quote selling for $10,370.

Notable highlights included Clarice

Beckett’s ethereal Eternity, lot 78 which

doubled its low estimate to fetch $15,250

and f Norman Lindsay’s Illustration, lot 34

which followed the same pattern selling

for $5,856.

Works by European and Asian artists

performed very well on the night with the

standout being mid-century Vietnamese

artist Pham hau. his 1966 painting Mother

and Child,lot 88, carrying a modest presale

estimate of $3000-5000 was vigorously

bid by international collectors eventually

selling for $10,370.

With competitive bidding from home and overseas proving there is a strong demand for high end Jewels & Objets D’Art. Here are a few highlights from the last sale coveted by the discerning collector. Now consigning single-owner collections and individual items.

aRT DECO LOUIS vUITTON GENTLEMaN’S vaLISE NECESSaIRE, FITTED WITH FRENCH SILvER vaNITY SETSold for $4,880 IBP The ultimate late 19th century high-tech Gentleman’s accessory. This would of been owned by a seriously wealthy gentleman with a valet who would of kept each component well stocked. This is a wonderful reminder of a lost era and could still be used today by the Contemporary Dandy. The intrinsic value is maintained as all the components are made of sterling silver. As the global male grooming market expands so too does the interest in these luxury male grooming antiques.

a DUNHILL aQUaRIUM TaBLE LIGHTER, MID-20TH CENTURYSold $3,660 IBP A ‘Mad Men’ essential and gracing the coffee tables of the cutting edge bachelor of the day, ready to charm and impress any smoking lady. These lighters were made by a 20th century artisan Ben Shillingford (1904-2000), whose unique skills in designing, carving and hand-painting the perspex panels could never be equalled. Upon his retirement, the skills necessary to continue to manufacture the ‘Aquarium’ lighter could not be found, and production ceased. The desirability has increased over the years and due to the limited production will continue on an upward projector I’m sure.

EaRLY 20TH CENTURY GERMaN SILvER aND IvORY FIGURE OF a KNIGHT BY WILHELM WEINRaNCH aND FRITZ SCHMIDTSold for $4,880 IBP There has been a growing interest in ‘Gentleman’s library’ accoutrements. This piece would of been well placed on the desk of an important industrialist looking to let whomever sat on the other side know exactly who was boss. In the advent of many successful Knight and battle television series’ we are seeing an increased interest in such pieces.

JEaN EMILE PUIFORCaT 1897-1945, LaRGE FRENCH SILvER BOX, PaRIS CIRCa 1925Sold for $19,520 IBP A rare and remarkable piece by the French silver smith and designer. Works by puiforcat are held in the collections of the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum.

ELAD LASSRY:THE LUBRICATED IMAGEDealing in a currency of impossibly sharp, colour-saturated photographs, painted frames and sculptural “apertures”, Los Angeles-based artist Elad Lassry works to activate and make manifest the psychology, nervousness and ways of looking that enshroud the photographic medium.

By Dan Rule

Elad Lassry’s frames of reference tend not to befit conventional discussions around photography. The Tel Aviv-born artist speaks of the “physicality of the picture”, of using sculptures and partitions as “apertures”. He muses on “reconfiguring” our understanding of the photograph as a representational medium, of re-imagining the photograph as a “more primary” language of “colour and texture and reflection and ratio”.

His pictures have long suggested as much. At once prosaic and highly unconventional, they exist within and without of the photographic read. They seduce via well-worn tropes and conventions – whether that of the stock photograph, product photograph or canned studio portrait from another era – only to veer off at the last minute, ensconced in an all-too-perfect sheen, an all-too-pervasive point of focus and an all-too-saturated colour logic. They proffer understanding, only to avoid comprehension.

And for Lassry, who is speaking from his studio in LA, this is the precise point. The image is enmeshed in dualities. “A lot of my work is a proposal,” offers the 36-year-old in his quiet, measured cadence. “You could absolutely stand next to my work and say, ‘It’s a picture of a red hat’. But it’s also a picture of the colour red. My interest is really in creating a strategy in which the viewer starts to acknowledge the other qualities in the picture.”
