This week I am pleased to share with you the perspectives of some of our students with regard to their involvement in some formation and ministry occasions of the last week or so. Below is Adam Lukacs’s and Richard Cook’s article on World Mission Month and Mitchell Olley’s and Jarvis Pyne’s review of their Year 7 Retreat.

Our Catholic Mission October is World Mission Month and on Wednesday 22 October, a group of Year 10 students were invited to attend World Children’s Mission Day Mass at the Cathedral of St Stephen. The Mass was celebrated by Archbishop Mark Coleridge and it was great to be a part of the Mass and see many Catholic schools attend to celebrate the Catholic Church’s missions across the world. The main focus of the Mass was poverty in Jamaica. Sadly, Jamaica is a nation deeply troubled by violence and crime. With the second-highest rate of gun killings anywhere in the world, communities in Jamaica live in constant fear. For many of the Jamaican youth born in the slums, they know chances are high that they may never achieve their dreams or that their lives could be cut short as a result of violence.

At St. Patrick’s College we have a number of “missions” or

service programs, which include serving food for those in need

three times per week. A program we are involved in is ‘The

Homework Help Program’, which helps students in the local

area with their school work. About five students from Year 10

and Year 11 go to Zillmere Library every

Tuesday afternoon. The students who come to

tutoring are from other cultures and backgrounds, and often

English is their second language. I am sure you can all

understand how difficult the school work can be for some of

these students, so we try and help them learn and complete

their work.

Similar to the Catholic Church, at St. Patrick’s College we

have international missions around the world, through House

Charities and immersion programs. It was great to be given the

opportunity to attend the Mass, and to see so many other

Catholic schools come to celebrate the missions the Catholic

Church is involved in.

We will celebrate World Mission month this Friday with our Green and Gold Day. Our College’s efforts with bringing a gold coin in on Green and Gold Day is a fantastic way to support our Jamaican friends. These donations will support impoverished Jamaican communities through Catholic missions, averting some of the despair and giving hope to those in need. Adam Lukacs & Richard Cook (Year 10)

COMPANIONS ON THE JOURNEY On 24 October the Year 7s attended a school retreat at the Sandgate Scout Hall. It was a wonderful day for the boys and their teachers. It gave the boys and their teachers some time to sit back and reflect on the year that has been. We did an activity, where we had to paint a tile and on the tile we painted ourselves and what represented our family. Some boys painted faces and other boys used symbols to represent their family. After the painting of the tiles we then wrapped the tile in a towel. The towel represented how protective we are of our relationships and then we smashed them with a hammer. The idea of smashing the tile was to show us how it feels to have relationships broken and how delicate they can be. When we painted the tile, it reminded us that you have to work hard at a relationship just like we put effort into our tiles.

Lastly we then glued the tile back onto a piece of wood. It took time just like a relationship to put back together. When it was put back together there were holes in it. Just like a relationship, it was never going to be the same. At the end of the day we then were asked to try to fix a relationship that was broken. Mitchell Olley (Year 7)

College Dean Student Formation

The term is certainly starting to disappear. We are at the end of Week 4 and the amount of work that is required for students at this stage of the year is increasing. All boys should be doing regular homework and revision on both a daily and weekly basis. At this point of the term it would be a good time to sit down and look at what academic work is required to be completed and identify key due dates. I am looking for some topics for our Parent Education Program for 2015. If any parents would like to hear professionals speak on a certain topic please email your suggestions at [email protected]. Showcase: Our Inter-House competition culminates this evening with Showcase. It should be a great spectacle with over 1200 students on stage during the night. Please ensure your son knows when and where he is to meet his House Dean and what time his House is performing. We have asked the students to ensure they do not move around the College grounds during the evening but are always with their parents, their House or performing on stage.

PARENTING IDEAS FROM MICHAEL GROSE—Oh So Serious When Malcolm Dix found himself taking life too quickly and too seriously, he decided to take a dose of his own medicine. Everywhere I go I hear from parents that they are too busy, too stressed, and have too much to do and not enough time. Many social observers say parents seeing themselves as ‘time poor’ is at epidemic levels, a belief that is only compounded by technology that enables us to be connected 24/7. At one point I personally had to take some time to stop and honestly reflect upon my own life and that of my family. It didn’t take long for me to see that I too had become caught up in the ‘busyness’ of life. I knew that for the sake of my kids and my family, I had to make a change but it requires a day-in day-out conscious level of commitment – a commitment to practise joy, fun, patience, forgiveness, silliness, bad dancing and reflection. Currently I’m doing seven things to calm my life down and that of my family while trying to create more space for my children to simply enjoy their childhood. (Some of the following I’m sure you already do but it’s taken me a while to figure them out). My strategies to slow down and not be so busy are as follows:

1.Eat together as a family at the table at least four nights a week

There has been more and more written about the importance of families eating together and the positive effect it has on children and adults alike. I have to say I’m enjoying it.

2. Avoid watching the nightly news

I’ve stopped watching the news and to my surprise the sky never collapsed as I had feared. I’m a much happier man not watching the oh-so-depressing news.

3.Turn off the TV and sit around an open fire

I’ve constructed a simple fire pit in our inner-city backyard and every second weekend my partner, the kids and I toast marshmallows, listen to funny songs, talk and look up at the stars. Who needs to go camping to enjoy the outdoors! My eldest boy (13 years old) is also learning to set a fire and his younger brothers are learning a lot about flames, hot coals and what happens to marshmallows when they are left in the fire for too long. Meanwhile my 16-year-old daughter will stare at the flames for an hour thinking about who knows what … but for me this is better than seeing her staring at social media or watching mindless television.

4. Dance together

I’ve made the conscious decision to start dancing in the kitchen with my kids at least three times a week. I can’t dance to save myself, however I have three boys and if they are ever going to learn to dance and be comfortable with moving their bodies, I suddenly realized I have to lead the way. This parenting caper sure can be humiliating at times, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

5.Exercise together

I exercise with my kids at least four times a week, usually at the local park kicking the footy, throwing a frisbee, running with our dog and so on. I have realised that the best way to get them all moving is by moving myself too.

6.Explore nature together

I’ve started spending more time in nature with my kids by taking them to the river, the hills, lakes, nature parks. I keep it local, with the occasional longer drive on weekends. I contacted my local council and found so many fun things to do as a family in my local area that I never knew existed … who would have thunk it! Limit your own social networking I have severely reduced my time spent on social media such as Facebook, Twitter etc. My personality type could disappear into social media and never come back so I knew I had to significantly change my ways and, once again, it’s all about positive role modelling for my kids. So there you have it, my strategies for simplifying and calming my family life. As a result I’m happier, less stressed and far more ‘present’ for everyone which, in turn, is having a positive effect on my kids.

Mr Chris Campbell AP Curriculum

Dr Robert Marzano’s research into effective schools has led to the creation of a pedagogical framework, titled the A rt and Science of Teaching. This framework provides a common language for the preparation and presentation of lessons within any subject area. An important question to ask when exploring a framework is “What are we trying to achieve through its implementation?” Perhaps the best answer to such a question lies in Marzano’s work in the area of High Reliability Schools. This seems to me to be a logical outcome of implementing a curriculum framework such as the A rt and Sc ienc e o f Teaching. We want to be able to say that as a school we:

Continually pursue error free performance.

Implement structures and systems to identify errors in its operation.

Take proactive action to ensure the effective functioning of the system.

Hence, Marzano’s concept of a High Reliability School has implications for much more than what happens within the classroom. Whilst this is a vital component, high reliability organisations can lay claim to effective practice in all areas of

the operation. The logical outcome for St. Patrick’s is that any framework not only takes into account classroom practice, but areas such as pastoral care, mission, Campus Ministry, the Edmund Rice Charter etc. Such a framework becomes a defining organisational and philosophical element of the College. Year 7 2015 I have had a few question regarding the structure of Year 7 at St. Patrick’s from 2015. As you will be aware, from next year in Queensland Schools, Year 7 will be absorbed into the traditional secondary school. St. Patrick’s has always had a Year 7 cohort. The state wide changes to the placement of Year 7 have led to some changes in the way Year 7 is organized at the College. These have been trialled for the last two years. Students in Year 7 will have two core teachers, one for English, SOSE and/or RE and one for Maths, Science and/or RE. Other subjects will be taught by specialist teachers including HPE, Music, Art, Drama, Indonesian and DTech. For the most part classes will be based in the Waterford Building with minimal movement, wherever possible.

The Entrepreneur Club Our Year 10 Business Studies students have hit the ground running from the first day back this term. These young men are shaping up to be the entrepreneurs of the future as they create a business idea, write a business plan and present their idea to a group of ‘investors’. Market research has been the hot topic this week as our students have been asking some very important future customers (our Year 5 students) for their input and feedback into the business ideas. We are already seeing some very innovative and worthy ideas. Stay tuned, particularly towards the end of the term when our Year 10 students will showcase their ideas in detail.
