Peter Stanley Martin finds himself participating in the music industry in a variety of ways: as editor, arranger, conductor, guest speaker, clinician, and author. Since 2004, Mr. Martin has been a member of the G. Schirmer, Inc. and Associated Music Publishers Production and Editorial staff where he serves as Production Coordinator and collaborates daily with contemporary masters such as John Corigliano, Joan Tower, John Harbison, Andre Previn, and Tan Dun on the creation, production, and performance of new works, while also working with the compositions of luminaries like Henry Cowell, George Antheil, Samuel Barber, Gian Carlo Menotti, Percy Grainger, Charles Ives, and others. Further projects include work for The New York Pops, Richard Danielpour, Hila Plitmann, Thierry Lancino, Jonathan Newman, and the educational DVD and music series “Learning from the Legends.” Currently, Mr. Martin is developing a new collaborative-band series, partnering with composers to create authorized band transcriptions of contemporary works. The first commercial publication of the series was with John Corigliano on a band transcription of Lullaby for Natalie, which was first performed by the West Chester University Wind Ensemble. In 2014, Mr. Martin worked with Academy Award winner (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, Tan Dun to create a transcription of his Internet Symphony, “Eroica” – Tan Dun’s first composition for wind band. 2015 and 2016 will feature first performances of new collaborative transcriptions of John Harbison, Aaron Jay Kernis, Joan Tower, Mark Adamo, and Richard Danielpour. In 2014, Mr. Martin’s “Centennial Performing Edition” of Camille Saint-Saëns’s Finale to "HAIL! CALIFORNIA" was premiered by the Ridgewood Concert Band. This edition is the first to incorporate all of the original music for wind band that Saint-Saëns composed for the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition held in San Francisco to celebrate the opening of the Panama Canal. As a conductor, Mr. Martin has received acclaim for his work with symphony orchestras, wind bands, and new music ensembles. He serves as an annual adjudicator of The American Prize, has been published in the WASBE Journal, consulted on critical editions of Samuel Barber and Zygmunt Stojowski, has presented masterclasses/guest conducted at Columbia University, New York University, Rutgers University, Hunter College, and the InterSchool Orchestras of New York, and has served as a board member and editor at the Conductors Guild. Mr. Martin received his Master of Music in Conducting from Rutgers University, where he studied with William Berz and Kynan Johns; his Bachelor of Music Education from Hofstra University; and has participated in several workshops including the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music with Marin Alsop.

The Ridgewood Concert Band (RCB), in its 33rd season, is one of the leading wind ensembles in the United States. Founded by community leaders, dedicated musicians and Music Director Chris Wilhjelm in 1983, the RCB is committed to engaging and inspiring our audiences with the finest in traditional and contemporary wind literature. Led by Dr. Wilhjelm, the band is composed of professional, amateur and student players drawn from across the tri-state area.

PROGRAM NOTES Hands Across the Sea - John Philip Sousa (1854-1932) Sousa prefaced the sheet music's score for this march with a quotation from the English diplomat John Hookham Frere: "A sudden thought strikes me; let us swear eternal friendship.” Though Sousa does not indicate a particular nation the march was composed for, it certainly represents the goodwill that the Sousa Band brought with them on their world tours. Composed in the wake of the Spanish-American War, this march is idealistic, in addition to patriotic, in nature. When it was premiered in 1899 the audience insisted it be repeated three times. Finale to “Hail! California” - Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) This piece was written by Saint-Saëns for the Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915. Originally scored for full orchestra, organ and supplemental wind band of 60 members, the performance at the Exposition included a full orchestra (reportedly the Boston Symphony Orchestra), an organ soloist, and the Sousa Band. It was a tribute to Franco-American relations entering a critical phase as World War I unfolded. The piece was important enough to have been mentioned in Saint-Saëns' obituary in the New York Times but disappeared into virtual obscurity until now. Arranger Peter Stanley Martin found the score at the Sibley Music Library at the Eastman School of Music and carefully arranged the work for concert band in a Centennial Performing Edition. This proud finale combines the melodies of La Marseillaise (the national anthem of France) with the Star Spangled Banner in a dramatic and triumphal finish to the grand cantata that was performed 100 years ago in San Francisco and never again until last season by the Ridgewood Concert Band.

L’HARMONIE LA CROIX VALMER

L’Harmonie La Croix Valmer is a concert band from the southeastern region of France that was founded in 1984 and is composed of professional musicians. In addition to performing around the world they are the host of Festival des Anches d’Azur, which features musical ensembles from around the world.

L’HARMONIE LA CROIX VALMER

Paprikash - Julie Giroux (1961) Paprikash is a popular dish of Hungarian origin whose name is derived from the ample use of paprika. It is a dish prepared by people in Jewish, Greek, Hungarian, Arabic, and Russian cultures. Giroux utilized the dish’s name for the title of this piece as it draws heavily on the Phrygian Dominant Scale, which is used in the music of these cultures. Listeners will easily hear this “flavor” in the melodies, harmonies and overall energy. This piece was composed for the Saitama Sakae Wind Orchestra (Japan) and premiered by the ensemble in December 2014 at the Midwest Clinic, an international band and orchestra conference in Chicago, Illinois. Bacchanale from “Samson and Delilah” - Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) The opera Samson and Delilah tells the Biblically-based story of Israelite leader and hero Samson who has been betrayed by the seductive Philistine beauty Delilah. He is blinded and then chained to the pillars of the temple of Dagon as the Philistines celebrate their victory over his people. Bacchanale (found in Act III of the opera) begins softly, reprising a “song to spring” heard in Act 1. The music then becomes fast-paced and exotic to act as the musical accompaniment to the wild revelry taking place just before Samson, calling upon the Lord for one last burst of strength, brings down the mighty pillars and tumbles the temple roof, destroying his enemies and himself.
