Principal’s Message Dear Parents:
In spite of what has been happening lately, I under-
stand Spring is supposed to make an appearance this
month. Let’s hope so. Despite all of the difficulties get-
ting schools open during the recent snow storms, the
school staff, parents, and students have done a marvelous
job in ensuring safety for everyone. Thanks to all who
made the extra special effort to pull it off.
We have now received course requests from stu-
dents for next year. Remember, until you and your child
“lock in” your requests, they can be changed. Please be
sure to click on the “save and I am finished” button. We
ask that you go ahead and do this by March 5th so that the
process of producing next year’s schedule can begin.
You may have noticed that we now have posted our
entire school calendar on our website. Please check it out
as it will provide lots of timely information about events at
the school. Just go to our website and then click on the
“calendar” link in the yellow bar.
Please be sure to contact staff if you have any ques-
tions or concerns as we move into the last 15 or so weeks
of the school year.
Sincerely yours,
W. E. Oblas

DDDD ECA, an association of marketing students, guided by the direction of marketing teachers, Mrs. Diane Petrella and Miss Kristen Johnson, will strive to reach the national DECA goals to plan activities
that encourage Civic Consciousness, Social Intelligence, Vo-cational Understanding and Leadership Development. This year’s club officers are:
After an outstanding finish in the DECA District Leadership Conference at Stone Bridge HS in January, 21 students will advance to the DECA State Leadership Conference in Nor-folk, VA in March! The students and their categories are as follows: Mike Love will compete in Introduction to Business and Marketing cate-gory Communications and Lexi Bell and Fatima Infante will complete in Job Interview. Andrew Flynn will complete in Personal Selling. Ashley Klevenhagen will compete in Princi-ples of Hospitality and Tourism and Brandon Hinke, Sophie Roberts and Courtney Bell will all compete in Principles of Busi- ness and Management. In the upper-level Marketing competitions requiring a comprehensive exam and 2 role-play scenar-ios, Abby Campbell will compete in Quick Serve Restaurant Marketing, Jon Youst and Austin Manno will complete in Business Ser-vices Market- ing and Felicia Johnson will complete in Food Marketing. After taking first place at the District level, Andrew Newton will compete in Apparel and Accessories Marketing, Tyler Hayden will com-
plete in Marketing Management and Amie Capilongo will complete in Full Serve Restaurant Management. Patrick Car-ney and Andy Wolfe will compete in Retail Marketing and EJ Poell will complete in Sports and Entertainment Marketing. Sara Briggs and Matt Fleagle will compete in Travel and Tourism Marketing Management Team Decision Making and Tyler Ramey and Andrew Singh will compete in the Team Decision Making event of Hospitality Services. Rachel Solis will be attending the conference to participate in the Leader-ship Academy. Unfortunately due to Blizzard 2010, DECA was snowed out of the civic consciousness effort to make Valentine’s Day cards with the Heritage Hall Nursing Home residents on February 13th. A spring activity will be planned to participate in with them.
Soon to be planned is our annual event, Sin-gled Out Dream Date, a fun contest in
which students will try to win a date with 4 selected students from each grade level. Several Marketing classes will
work as groups to complete plans hop-ing their plan will be the chosen theme! After
a theme is chosen, DECA students will carry out the plan for the event that will be held during Raider Rally and raise money to fund future DECA activities. In order to highlight the growing need for concern and awareness about autism, DECA recognizes April as a special opportunity to educate the LCHS community about autism and issues within the autism community.
Our two Civic Consciousness officers will be team leaders for our American Can-cer Society Relay for Life team this year. Both Amie Capilongo and Abby Campbell have participated with DECA’s team for the past two years. This year’s event will be held at Heritage High School on Saturday, June 12th. Our chapter will be discussing team fundraising, as well as individual fundraising in the next sev-eral events. We have been very success-
ful at car washes and various other activities so stay tuned for upcoming news!

2010 LCPS Financial Aid Handbook
The 2010 Financial Aid Handbook lists local scholarships for graduating seniors attending post-secondary education. The application deadline for most scholarships is April 6, 2010 but some are due earlier. Copies of the handbook will be distributed through Government classes and will be available in guidance and most of the appli-cations can be found on the guidance website. It is the student’s responsibility to submit applications on time to Mrs. Fulcer in the career center and we recommend turning in applications earlier than the deadline. Some applications must be sent directly to the scholarship sponsor by the student.
Visit the guidance website for a list of local, state, and national scholarships avail-able to students (not included in the LCPS Financial Aid Handbook). We encourage students to use a scholarship search engine (a list can be found on our scholarship web page) to find scholarships tailored to the student.
It is highly recommended families complete and submit the FAFSA now. The FAFSA or SAR (Student Aid Report) is required for many of the local scholarships offered and must be completed for the colleges to determine your financial need. If you have any questions about scholarships, please feel free to contact Mrs. Fulcer at [email protected].
REMEMBER…..YOU HAVE TO APPLY TO WIN!
April 9, 2010 LCHS has re-scheduled the Making College & Career Count presentation for its senior class. "Making College & Career Count" is designed to help student begin to think about their next steps upon graduation and what they need to accomplish throughout the upcoming years in order to maximize their opportunities for future success. The program also addresses important issues such as time management, choosing career paths, gaining experience through internships and mean-
ingful work experience and study skills.
Making College Count
There are two new faces in the guidance department these days. During our historic snow two of our counselors became mothers. Mrs. Kristie Jones is now the proud mother of a baby girl, and Mrs. Megan Dunn of a new baby boy. During their leave there are two substitute counselors in the office, both with extensive experi-ence as counselors. Ms. Michele Havener will be in for Mrs.Jones, and Mr. Tom Vorisek (who will join us on March 8th) will be cov-ering for Mrs. Jones. Do not hesi-tate to call them for assistance.

The Center for Diversity in Engineering at the University
of Virginia is offering rising high school juniors and seniors
the opportunity to participate in our 2009 Introduction to
Engineering Program (ITE). ITE is a premier, residential,
introductory engineering program. Past evaluations indicate
that the program has been very successful in exposing stu-
dents to engineering, science, mathematics, and technology,
while also providing them with a glimpse of "college-
life". Anyone interested is encouraged to apply and women
and minorities are strongly urged to apply. The program
starts June 27 and ends on July 3. The application dead-
line is April 9, 2010. More information may be obtained by
visiting the website: http://www.seas.virginia.edu/diversity/
pre_college/ite.html.
The College of William and Mary Pre-Collegiate Sum-
mer Program in Early American History We are looking
for highly-motivated high-school students (rising juniors and
seniors) with a deep commitment to learning about the past;
who believe they have excellent analytical ability; whose
writing skills are sound; who thrive in a competitive, though
structured, discussion class format; and who would like a taste
of life in a college dorm. A particular background in Ameri-

“Reality Store”
Virginia Cooperative Extension and Loudoun Volunteer Financial Council
(LVFC) are seeking volunteers for the “Reality Store” program!
What is it? The “Reality Store” is a fun, hands-on, “real-life” simulation for high school seniors in Loudoun County. The purpose of this event is to provide students with a “taste” of reality through an educational role-playing simulation relating to making financial choices.
How does it work? Each High school senior is given, at random, a career, a salary and a family life situation. They are told they are the head of the household, aged 25. Then off they go to their school’s gym to experience ‘real’ life and make some chal-lenging financial decisions. First stop – Uncle Sam to deduct taxes; then to the Bank to deposit their salary; then …. the student is required to visit every booth to purchase all the things necessary to live! Should he visit the Housing Booth first to secure accommodation, the Grocery Booth to make sure he has enough food, get some form of transpor-tation (maybe that fast car he has dreamed of!), and get some fancy clothes. Oh, what about furniture, utilities, medical and dental insurance, a phone to name just a few! But wait – he has two children ages 1 and 3 – he needs child care!
What will I do as a volunteer? You will volunteer at one of the booths. You will initial the student’s checkbook brochure to verify that he has visited your booth. You can assist the student in considering different options on how much he will spend, but ultimately he makes the final decision. You can also volunteer to be a Booth Chair.
What are the booths? Bank Child Care Clothing Communications Contribution Credit Card Crystal Ball Entertainment Furniture Grocery Housing Medical/Dental Personal Care Transportation Uncle Sam Utilities SOS/Supplemental Income
Are there other volunteer opportunities? Yes! You can assist with setting up and dismantling or be part of a coalition to help plan future events.
When and where? The next “Reality Store” events will be on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Loudoun County High School. Your time commitment will be from 8:15am to noon.
How do I sign up? Please email Debra Foster on [email protected], telephone 703-771-5836, or mail your interest to Virginia Cooperative Extension, Loudoun Office, 30-B Catoctin Circle, Leesburg, VA, 20175. Please indicate at which booth you would like to volunteer. Full details will then be forwarded to you.
Thank you for volunteering for the Reality Store! Reality Store has been funded by: Loudoun Education Foundation

The monthly BPO meeting has
been rescheduled for Tuesday, March
16 in the LCHS Band Room. Because the February meeting was cancelled, the agenda is sure to be full for the March meeting. Nominations for new BPO officers for the 2010-2011 school year will be accepted during this meeting (see sidebar article for more information). For those not familiar with the monthly BPO meeting, it is open to the parents of all band students – marching, concert, jazz, and sym-phonic bands. This meeting is led by the BPO President and attended by the BPO officers; Mr. Young, the LCHS Band Director, is also in atten-dance. It is a great opportunity to learn about what your band students are working on, the schedule for up-coming performances and activities, the status of the BPO budget and fundraising, as well as what volun-teer opportunities are available. It is the parents’ opportunity to ask Mr. Young or the BPO officers your ques-tions, and to share your ideas on band activities and BPO operations. Please join us on March 16!

In the past, our Marching Band members have enjoyed trips to Virginia Beach, performances at Disney World and Busch Gardens, and other fun activi-ties such as Band Movie Night and team dinners (including the upcom-ing “FUNraiser” dinner at CiCi’s Pizza – see sidebar of upcoming events for more information).
