March 2012 Loudoun County High School 1 Principal’s Message Dear Parents: It looks as though spring has arrived. With it comes a whole new schedule of activities as we begin to move outdoors. I truly look forward to many of the excit- ing possibilities that lie before us from now until the end of the year. In addition to all of the spring athletic events, we will be conducting several events this month. Our Reality Store, a great look at their future from a financial perspec- tive, will be taking place on March 20. All seniors will be engaged in this very worthwhile activity. We will also be hosting our first ever NJROTC drill meet. Already sched- uled to attend are 8-10 teams from around the mid-Atlantic region. I am sure everyone is looking forward to spring break, which takes place from April 2 through April 6. When we return from break, we will begin our end of year testing cycle, including SOL tests and AP tests. This is a very critical time for students as teachers are in the final stages of preparation for these assessments. To that end, I would encourage students and parents to be judicious about absenteeism. Have a great March! Principal’s Message Dear Parents:

It looks as though spring has arrived. With it

comes a whole new schedule of activities as we begin to

move outdoors. I truly look forward to many of the excit-

ing possibilities that lie before us from now until the end

of the year.

In addition to all of the spring athletic events, we

will be conducting several events this month. Our Reality

Store, a great look at their future from a financial perspec-

tive, will be taking place on March 20. All seniors will be

engaged in this very worthwhile activity. We will also be

hosting our first ever NJROTC drill meet. Already sched-

uled to attend are 8-10 teams from around the mid-Atlantic

region.

I am sure everyone is looking forward to spring

break, which takes place from April 2 through April 6.

When we return from break, we will begin our end of year

testing cycle, including SOL tests and AP tests. This is a

very critical time for students as teachers are in the final

stages of preparation for these assessments. To that end,

I would encourage students and parents to be judicious

about absenteeism.

Have a great March!

March 30 End of Marking Period

Dear Parents and Students:

The month of March will be a very busy and exciting time. The guidance

counselors will be working individually with students to help finalize their

schedule for the 2012-2013 school year. Information from the semester re-

port card, discussion with parents, and teacher presentations should all in-

fluence the student’s decision making process regarding their courses for

next year.

Please remember that AP and SOL tests are around the corner! We ask that

families express the importance of these exams to their students.

During the second week of February each senior should have received

the2012 Scholarship and Financial Aid Handbook. If you have a senior,

please look over the handbook with them. Finally, visit our website to get

more information about scholarships, SAT registration, Monroe Technology

Center, and other guidance related information. Summer Programs

Visit the Guidance website or the career center for information on summer programs offered by col-leges throughout the United States and abroad. Listed on our site are a number of opportunities that we have received information on. Searching online will also provide you with good information on col-lege summer programs and more. These summer programs provide students with a wide range of ex-perience and serve as great resume builders for college applications.

Welcome

The 2012 Financial Aid Handbook

lists local scholarships for graduat-

ing seniors attending post-

secondary education. The applica-

tion deadline for most scholarships

is April 11, 2012 but some are due

earlier. Copies of the handbook

were distributed through Govern-

ment classes the week of February

13th and copies are also available

on-line. Applications can be picked

up in the career center or found on

the guidance website. It is the stu-

dent’s responsibility to submit ap-

plications on time to Mr. West in

the career center and we recom-

mend turning applications in ear-

lier than the deadline. Some ap-

plications must be sent directly to

the scholarship sponsor by the

student. It is highly recommended

families complete and submit the

FAFSA now. The FAFSA is re-

quired for many of the local

scholarships offered and must be

completed for the colleges to de-

termine your financial need.

The Loudoun County High School SCA has had a busy couple of

months! After delivering the prizes for our annual Door Decorating Contest and Canned Food Drive (in which over one ton of food was donated), we spent the month of January planning our spring activities. To celebrate National Guidance Counselor week (February 6 – February 10), we allowed stu-dents to write letters to their respective guidance counselors during lunch, thanking them for all they do. On Friday, we deliv-ered the packaged letters, along with two plates of baked good-ies, to the Guidance Department. It was a great week and a won-derful way to show our gratitude to the Guidance Department for all they do and have done over the years.

Look out for upcoming spring activities sponsored by the SCA:

· “Spirit Night” at local Leesburg restaurant (to be determined)

· School-wide service project (charity donation to be determined)

· Annual painting of the senior wall

· SCA officer elections for the 2012-2013 school year

The LCHS Keyettes have completed a busy first semester

involving them in several projects designed to help the

community in some way.

The club raised hundreds of dollars by selling cotton

candy at home football games this past season and do-

nated that money to Loudoun Interfaith Relief, a food

pantry that provides emergency food supplies to the needy.

Other first-semester activities included hosting the fall

blood drive in October; buying and installing several

plants by the side of the building for the school’s “adopt-a-

spot” program, which encourages clubs to clean up and

beautify a certain area around the school; visiting the eld-

erly at Spring Arbor and hosting bingo; and participating

in two parades - the Kiwanis Halloween parade and Lees-

burg Christmas Holiday parade, where they had a float.

Next for the club is the Keyettes 3rd Annual Spring Fash-

ion Show to benefit Cystic Fibrosis. More information to

come on that event.

Thirteen members of the Raider Debate team travelled to UVA on Friday, February 24 for a two-day competition involving Student Congress and Public-Forum. Chris Carson and Mason Hale placed 3rd in Public-Forum. While Andrew Carnes placed 3rd and Victoria Durand placed 6th in Student Congress.

LCHS DECA collected 93 pairs of jeans to donate to Aeropostale for their Teens For Jeans project which gives the donated “gently worn” jeans to homeless children across the nation. We would like to thank all of the LCHS community who supported this effort. In the month of March DECA will be supporting the Muscular Dystrophy Association ( MDA) to raise money to send one child with Muscular Dystrophy to summer camp. Look for us selling shamrocks to raise money as well as donating the Raider Trader School Store sales one day to help us reach our goal. During the month of April, we will continue our Autism Awareness campaign. We sell puzzle piece pins, collect donations and donate a day of Raider Trader School Store sales. Our col-lected amount is then donated to our own LCHS Autism program to support their spring field trip expenses.

LCHS Future Business Leaders of America The "Reality Store" is a fun, hands-on, "real-life" simulation for high school seniors at Loudoun County High School. The

purpose of this event is to provide students with a taste of reality through an educational role-playing simulation relating to

making financial choices.

Each high school senior is given, at random, a career, a salary and a family life situation. They are told they are the head of

the household at the age of 25. Then off they go to their school’s gym to experience "real life" and make some challenging

financial decisions.

First stop: Uncle Sam to deduct taxes; then to the bank to deposit their salary; then the student is required to visit every

booth to purchase all the things necessary to live. Should he/she visit the Housing Booth first to secure accommodation, the

Grocery Booth to make sure he/she has enough food, get some form of transportation (maybe that fast car he/she has

dreamed of!), and get some fancy clothes. Oh, what about furniture, utilities, medical and dental insurance, a phone to name

just a few! But wait – he/she has two children ages 1 and 3 – and needs child care!

Volunteers will initial the student's checkbook brochure to verify that he/she has visited the booth. Volunteers can assist the

student in considering different options on how much he/she will spend, but ultimately the student makes the final decision.

The booths at the Reality Store are: Bank, Child Care, Clothing, Communications, Contribution, Credit Card, Crystal Ball,

Entertainment, Furniture, Grocery, Housing, Medical/Dental, Personal Care, SOS/Supplemental Income, Transportation,

Uncle Sam, and Utilities.

The Reality Store program was developed by the Virginia Coop-erative Extension office to help high school students develop an under-standing of what it takes to live within their financialmeans. Students are ran-domly assigned a career and salary and then go through an educational role-playing simulation designed to help them make good financial decisions. Could we “told-you-so” parents wish for anything better? Please volunteer to help us stage this invaluable day. Con-tact Melissa Phillips, at Melissa.Phillips @loudoun.gov, telephone 703-771-5419. Please indicate at which booth you would like to volunteer. Full de-tails will then be forwarded to you. For booth details, see the LCHS PTSA website.
