William Jones gave up theWaunfawr Colliery in 1812 andreturned to Bristol, trading as acoal merchant. Brothers JamesLeman and Thomas CurtisLeman were granted a 60 yearlease covering all seams andveins of coal and iron ore underMachen Mountain, Waun Fawr,Coed Waun Fawr, the collieryfarm, Risca Farm, Gellifiniog,Tonteg Farm, Llandanglais anda parcel of land at the top ofCoed Medart. Although theLemans went bankrupt within afew years, the MonmouthshireCanal Company accepting 5s inthe £ to settle their outstandingpayments, with no prospectivepurchaser in sight, the TredegarEstate allowed the Lemans tocontinue operating under theterms of the lease. The lease on Risca Farm, whichhad been extended, expired in1833 and James Leman took outa new lease on the farmhouseand five acres of land for 41 yearsfrom June 1831. In January 1842,James John Leman, son ofJames Leman obtained anextension until 1899; his unclehad died in 1827 and his father in1835.
In 1839, James John Leman hadtaken John Russell as a partner.Russell gradually gained controlof the colliery which, having had£140,000 spent on it, was againon the verge of bankruptcy andhe took on new partners.Extensions to the lease resulted inRussell having the mineral rightsover 1044 acres of land. In theparliamentary report of 1842 intothe employment of children inmines, it was stated that Riscaemployed 250 adults, 50 youthsunder 18 years of age and 15
boys under 13. In describing thework, one of the directors saidthat children rarely commencedwork before the age of ten.
Russell sank a new, deeper shaftto reach the black vein seamwhich, in trials, proved to be thebest coal for steam ships. As aresult he gained a contract tosupply the Royal West India MailSteam Packet Company with72,000 tons of coal. This new pitbecame the Blackvein Colliery.
From the beginning the deeperworkings resulted in problemswith gas, the pit was referred toas 'fiery' and there were someexplosions resulting in a smallnumber of deaths. Many localswouldn't work there resulting inhigher wages being paid andexperienced miners recruitedfrom Gloucester and Somerset. Alarger explosion occurred in 1846which resulted in 35 deaths, onlya handful of the victims hadWelsh surnames.
Small numbers of deathscontinued, two men in anexplosion and a 16 year old fallingdown the shaft, four men inseparate roof-fall accidents in1849, and this seems to havebeen accepted as the norm.
However, things went to a wholenew level in 1860, on 1stDecember 1860 a large explosionwas heard from the colliery and142 were killed including 22 boysunder 15 years of age.
There were not enough burialplaces in the area so families inother areas took their relationsback to their home district andthose that couldn't get places inlocal burial grounds were buriedin what became known as theminers cemetery in the field onthe mountainside above the canalnear the GreenmeadowBridge.Bristol trading as a coalmerchant and in 1820 he movedto London.

Like many other events allover the country, St. David'sDay Concert planned for the1st of March fell victim to theinclement weather and the'beast from the east', it wastherefore postponed until thefollowing week.
Having survived the snow
drifts, the choir presented a
traditional Welsh themed
programme by giving
renditions of 'Men of Harlech',
'O Gymru' 'Llef', 'Si Hei Lwli
Mabi' and of course the old
favourite 'Myfanwy' which
pleased the packed audience
greatly. They also included
'Calon Lan' and 'Hiraeth' as
well as the rousing Tom Jones
'Delilah'. The choir gave the
first performance of 'I write the
Songs' an arrangement by
Geraint Davies. Risca Primary
School Choir presented their
programme with a happy smile
as always under the
directorship of Alison Thomas
who is also Risca Male Choir
accompanist. They concluded
their programme with 'Sospan
Fach'.
Wales first game of the six
nations against Scotland got
off to a great start, Risca Male
Choir sang and entertained the
crowd at the Tiny Rebel
brewery in Rogerstone. The
choir also singing again at the
final game against France here
as well, Wales winning both
games, was it the performance
of the team or the singing by
the choir. Perhaps Wales may
have done even better if the
choir had sung at every game?
Can some-one tell the Welsh
Rugby Union!

Mr Benson said that ifthe Council allowedthat sort of thing they
would be losing their authority.A short time ago he had visitedone of the shows and thoughtthat the pictures were mostsuggestive. It was decided to order theremoval of thoseshows for whichno permissionhad been
given, and to give one months’notice in the case of the one theCouncil had sanctioned. In May 1907, Mr Jacob Studt’ssteam circus, switchback and
other amusementsarrived in
Risca for the annual WhitsunFair. On Sunday he presented acinematograph performance of‘The Passion Play’, causingsome controversy. The Rev TThomas (Bethany Baptist) andthe Rev S Jones (MoriahBaptist) uttering protestsagainst it at their Sundayevening services.Extract from the minutes of theCouncil meeting held on the25th May 1913.Proposed new cinema – A letterfrom the Rev JT Phillips wasread on behalf of the ChurchCouncil asking the Council touse its influence against the
granting of a licence for theproposed new cinema
in Pontymister.
At the monthly meeting of Risca Council in August 1906,Councillor Benson drew attention to the existence of severalCinematograph shows in the neighbourhood. Permission hadbeen given some six months previous to erect one but nowthere were about six. Mr Benson asked if permission hadbeen asked of the Council. The Council Surveyor said no onehad asked him.

On the 5th December 1913 anarticle in the Gazetteannounced; “The new cinemahall now in the process oferection opposite the PoliceStation will be opened onMonday”.On the 12th December 1913 theCounty Council issued the firstlicence to the Risca PalaceCompany, to use the hall as acinema, effective from the 11thDecember.On the same day the Arguspublished an article headed –RISCA - NEW PALACEOPENED.Why was it called the NewPalace? It was called the New Palace aswe already had an old Palace, the cinema in the Public Hall. The Picture Palace cinema wasestablished there in about 1910.The Public Hall had been a‘Place of Entertainment’ since1884. On the 15th November 1882 theRisca Public Hall CompanyLimited was registered with acapital of £2,500 in £1 shares,to provide a public hall at Risca. The proposed building wouldprovide a hall to accommodateconcerts and other publicentertainments, and offices forthe Local Board, the SchoolBoard, the Burial Board and thelocal Freemasons. The company comprised ofsome of the most influentialresidents of Risca; theseincluded Mr GW Wilkinson andMr Watts of Risca Collieries, MrE Edwards and Mr EA Taylor, provision merchants, andDoctors Robathan andInstance. In mid-October of thefollowing year, posters andlocal newspapersannounced, “The MemorialStones of the Risca Publicand Masonic Hall will be laidon Wednesday 31st October1883”.On Wednesday at one o’clockthe first of the memorial stoneswas laid by Mrs Watts, wife of
the local colliery owner, underthis stone a document wasdeposited containing astatement of facts associatedwith the event, together with aphial of coins. The stone borethe inscription - This stone waslaid by Mrs Watts, Devonhurst,London. October 31st 1883.A Masonic ceremony was thenproceeded with before thesecond stone was laid with duesolemnity by the ProvincialGrand Master LieutenantColonel Lyne. This stone borethe inscription – This stone waslaid by Lieutenant-Colonel Lyne,P.G.M., Monmouth. October31st 1883.Eight months later onWednesday the 2nd July 1884,Mr EH Watts, chairman of theLondon and South WalesColliery Company, performedthe opening ceremony. The Hall, designed by architectGeorge Rosser of Risca, consisted of - at the front of thebuilding the public offices withthe Masonic rooms above, andat the back, the hall, capable ofseating 800 persons. The entrance to the hall wasreached by means of a passageway, eight feet wide from thefront of the building. The hallwas is 80ft. by 50ft., andincluded a stage 35ft. by15ft. with a 12ft. by 10ft.ante-room on either side.In September 1884 theRisca Public HallCompany applied for andwas granted a‘Theatrical
Licence.’From time to time touringtheatrical companies visitedRisca, usually staying for aweek. A frequent and greatfavourite was Mr WC Poole’sMyriorama. This was the first ofthe moving picture shows toarrive in Risca. By a cleverarrangement of paintedcanvases attached to uprightrollers, and by suitable lightingin the background, the audiencewas taken on a most realisticjourney around the world, generally starting at LondonBridge. There would be suitablemusic, dances, songs andcomic turns at various placeson the journey.Stirring melodramas werebrought to the people of Riscaby the Inez Howard Company.Heroes and heroines werecheered and the villains booed. When the 11 strike leaders ofthe Pontymister Rioters wereliberated from Usk Gaol on the18th June 1894, a big meetingof welcome was held in the hallto celebrate their release. On the 24th April 1900,Tennyson Smith commenced aneight day TemperanceCampaign at the Hall.Admission was free except to‘The Great Trail of Alcohol’ on

They transformedthe building to meet their ownneeds. Access to the Hall fromfront office section was blockedoff. The hall was divided in two,one part becoming their newTemple. The dedication of thetemple took place in April 1928.For many years the roadsideoffices and old Masonic roomswere leased to the Governmentand used by various Ministrydepartments, Works,Employment, Food etc. Finallyin the 1950s the offices wereoccupied by the ProvidentCheck Company. It is thought that one of theoffices was converted for useas a shop, during the buildingmodification of 1928. For yearsit served as the tuck shop forthe pupils of Risca TownSchool, many will rememberbuying sweets in the Busy Bee.Today the Temple and Hall isstill the home of the HomfrayLodge of Freemasons and theGood Buy Shop occupying theroadside part of the building.

READERS OF THIS COLUMN have become aware ofthe work of the Twmbarlwm Society, such as litter-picking, fence and path repairs and our strugglesagainst off-roaders. But how many realise that CTScampaigns on many issues that have an immediateeffect on the wider landscape of the mountain? Ourmembers work continuously to lobby localauthorities and government departments to get thebest for our environment.
One such campaign concerns the actions of NaturalResources Wales (NRW) precipitated by PhytophthoraRamorum (aka Larch disease) that has affected forestrythroughout the UK and in particular, south-east Wales.
Clearing the diseased trees in the lower Sirhowy andEbbw Valleys has had a major impact on the landscape. The harvesting process has taken longer than elsewheredue to the steep, and therefore, tricky terrain, which hasmeant that every tree has to be felled by hand and thenwinched up to forest tracks. Locals have, for themost part, been understanding about thelength of time the forest paths have beenclosed, but there should be an expectationof professionalism and balance from NRW.
With felling on Machen, the GwyddonValley, Mynyddislwyn, and the CwmcarnForests around Twmbarlwm, occurring within arelatively short space of time, walking routes have beensubstantially reduced. NRW has the right to close forestrytracks without consultation. However, permission must besought to close public rights of way (PRoW). Initiallypermission can be granted by the local authority for up tosix months. If NRW needs longer it must apply for anextension. If a short extension is needed, because of themagnitude of the exercise, it is understandable that thecorrect procedure isn’t always followed. However, publicrights of way have been closed in some areas forsubstantially longer than six months.
There is more than one reason for this. NRW tends toapply to close PRoWs well before contractors are ready tomove to that particular area.
For instance, Restricted Byway 189 in the Nant CarnValley has been closed since December 2017, but at thebeginning of March 2018 not only were there no WARNINGposters advising visitors of the closure, no work hadstarted on the byway. It is highly unlikely that NRW will meetthe six month deadline for reopening the byway at the endof May. This is just one example, but it is far from anisolated incident.
TwmbarlwmForest Walksneed ClarityMain photo: Brash coveredfootpaths leave them unusablefor many months.
Right: A sign warns cyclists of “live work” in theCwmcarn Forest but does not prohibit entry - yetPRoWs remain closed to walkers far too long.
Another reason for theextended closure of PRoWsis that NRW appears not tocheck that contractorshave cleared the route ofthe brash generated bythe harvesting process. Itis impossible to find the line of a right ofway when it is covered in brash and it would be dangerousto try to negotiate a way through. Many walkers, includingRamblers members, moan about the problem but do notmake a formal complaint. So the paths can stay “closed”for a very long time. The route may be legally open butthat’s no comfort when it is impossible to use it.
Additionally, extra forestry roads need to be installed toextract the felled timber and in doing so PRoWs arecompromised. Unfortunately, there seems to be littleattempt to reinstate many of the rights of way and thusalthough they still legally exist, they are in fact unusable.
NRW recently sent out a request that walkersobey the WARNING signs and not enter aprohibited area, but when someone is on aplanned 8 mile walk and they come across aWARNING sign, there is often no choice but to
carry on. Dragging a group back up a steep inclineand extending the walk by a few more miles is just not
possible, especially when the walkers are looking forwardto the final stretch. Walking groups have to plan theirprogramme in advance. It is an impossible task wheninformation is non-existent or significantly out of date ormaybe even totally incorrect.
The public expect professionalism from a governmentbody, and we expect the same level of commitment todifferent types of users. NRW expects members of thepublic to play fair with them, but maybe NRW should leadby example.
Maggie Thomas, CTS Trustee and Correspondent for the Open
Spaces Society for Caerphilly and Torfaen County Boroughs

Gwerinwyr Gwent’s firstbooking of the year was on the26th February for the Linksladies group at BethesdaChapel Rogerstone. We hadbeen asked to do an Englishversion of the Welsh eveningdevised by Barbara Griffithsthat we put on for NewportWelsh society last year. Theevening consisted of usdemonstrating somedances, and audienceparticipation dancesinterspersed with theladies opening boxescontaining clues toevents in GwerinwyrGwent’s history, whichthey had to guess. Theevening concluded with anice buffet, and a goodtime was had by all.We were due to give our Welshculture evening for LlantillioPertholey WI on 1st March, andrun a twmpath for Ysgol Bro AlltaPTA on 2nd March...but of courseheavy snow intervened and theevents were cancelled. Hopefullyboth bookings will be re-arrangedat a future date. Therefore, our second bookingbecame Saturday 24th Marchwhen we organised a ceilidh withRogerstone Roses WI at StAnne’s church hall. This was afund raiser for the TredegarHouse Folk Festival (11th – 13thMay). Everyone there, includingGG, had a great evening, andraised a decent amount for thefestival. Much of the time everysingle person (apart from themusicians of course) was updancing to instructions called byBarbara or Rhian, with an allladies set from GG demonstratingthe occasional traditional Welshfolk dance to give participants abreather. The following day we made ourannual visit to Llanover House for
the NationalGardenSchemecharity opengarden day.Such a
contrast to the previousSunday when we had yet moresnow, the afternoon was warmand sunny, and the crowds
flocked in obviously glad to beout in the countryside after all thebad weather. Owner ElizabethMurray said that the 500 visitorswas their highest number since2014 when the day coincidedwith Mothering Sunday. The hard winter had taken its tollon the plants, with over half of thethousands of daffodils that linethe drive still only in bud, and the
magnolia trees not in flower yeteither. Nevertheless, the gardensare always beautiful, plus therewas a lovely atmosphere andmany people chose to linger, either sitting with tea and cake orjust standing, to watch usdancing, and there were severalappreciative comments about ourperformances which are always
so good to hear.Gwerinwyr Gwent is alwaysseeking new members, andbeginners or experienceddancers/musicians are verywelcome to join us on practicenights on Thursdays 8 – 10pm atthe Graig Community Hall,Bassaleg (opposite the RuperraPH).

Newport - Th e fastest moving property market in the whole of the UKIt’s true – according to a property portal Rightmove, Newport has the hottest property market in the UK and buyers are queuing up to move here.
Th e increase in demand has led to a 37% annual drop in available properties for sale and a £12,000 uplift in asking prices.
We have been experiencing a signifi cant increase in the number of home buyers looking to relocate here from Bristol and Cardiff due to a combination of factors including the scrapping of the Severn Bridge tolls, the high employment rates in the city and the aff ordability of properties compared to those in our neighbouring cities.
It’s a sellers market and those choosing to sell their homes here can expect to sell them quicker than anywhere else in the UK. 12 months ago the average home took 76 days to sell and this has dropped to just 52 days a decrease of 32%!
Book Your Free Valuation TodayIf you are thinking about moving, please get in touch with us to book a free valuation by one of our experienced team who will also happily explain what you could do to your property to perhaps increase its value and secure a quick sale at the right price for you.
Our extensive knowledge of the local property market is second to none and we also off er a fee match promise so you know you are getting the best value for money.

This castle can be reached fromSkenfrith by returning along theB4521 road, in the direction ofAbergavenny, and after nearly sixmiles taking a signposted left turnfor White Castle. Gwyn apGwaethfoed was the originalowner of this castle and as hisname means ‘white’ in Welsh;White Castle is a simpletranslation of Castell Gwyn. Thereis also a theory that the castletakes its name from its originalcolour, as traces of white plasterhave been found on the stonewalls.Gwyn was another brother of theBach family, who built Skenfrith. The brothers were sons of Cadivorap Gwaethfoed, a onetime prince ofCardigan, who was also an ancestorof the Morgan family who becamelords of Tredegar. This family beingthe ancestors of the notorious pirateHenry Morgan. The originalfortress was again most likelyconstructed of wood placed on topof an earlier defensive earthwork.Legend tells us that Gwyn was oldand blind, when his castle wasbesieged and seized by theNormans. He appealed to KingRufus for the chance to fight hisNorman opposer on equal terms ina darkened room. His claim to theright of trial by combat wasgranted, and the two fought it outin a locked and unlit room. Theelderly blind Welshman succeededin overcoming his Normanopponent and his property wasthen restored so the legend claimed. This old story may be true, but
Gwyn could not have retained thecastle for very long, for soon afterthis time the Normans began tostrengthen the fortress. WhiteCastle was the most vulnerable ofthe three castles and the Normans'construction turned this into themost formidable of the trilateral ofcastles. The present castle dates from theearly 13th century and is a good
example of a concentric castle. Thefortress is shaped like an elongatedhexagon, with an inner wardcompletely surrounded by a loftycurtain wall linked with six circulartowers of great strength. Two of
these towers, on the north side, were constructed to form theGatehouse, and the remainingtowers are equally spaced aroundthe outer wall. The whole castle issurrounded by a wide and deepwater-filled moat. The south side ofthe ward contained the hall andkeep.Over the moat on the north side ofthe gateway towers lies the outer
ward, a large open space againenclosed by a strong wall with fourprojecting towers. This also isprotected by an outer moat. Thesecombined defences are designed toprovide a powerful barbican. The

castle contains no identifiableremains of accommodation for thedefenders, who were likely to havebeen housed in wooden lean-toshelters.Look down into the waters of themoat and see if you can spot any ofthe giant carp that swim here, butbeware of any of the swanguardians who sometimes inhabitthe moat. Rudolph Hess, the deputyReichführer, who was allowed toexercise in the castle grounds whenimprisoned at a nearby mentalhospital, once fed these carp andswans. Climb to the top of thegateway tower, where a woodenplatform has been constructed toallow us to enjoy the impressiveviews. The most dominant landscapefeature is the Skirrid Fawrsometimes known as the ‘HolyMountain’, because on the summit,1,600 feet above sea level, are still afew stones from St. Michael'schapel. The soil from this site wasconsidered holy, and was gatheredby local folk to spread on the floorsof their cattle sheds. This wasintended to ward off disease, Iwonder if it would have kept ‘footand mouth’ at bay? The great gashin the southern flank has beenvariously blamed by the groundingof Noah's Ark or caused bylightning strike in the stormfollowing the Crucifixion, - takeyour pick!
LlanvetherineAfter leaving the castle and headingtowards Abergavenny, it is worthwhile briefly, pausing here toexamine the village church, whichcontains a few interesting, features. The church is normally kept locked, but access can be obtained from theoccupant of Brook Cottage. Justfollow the path from the churchentrance, go through the gate thencontinue on and turn left and crossover the brook bridge to thecottage. The oldest part of the church isprobably the tower which has anupper section corbelled out toproject over the lower construction.
The tower contains two bells dated1582 and 1653. An oak tablet, fixedto the west wall of the knave, illustrates the five wounds of Christ. The chancel holds two life-sizedeffigies of a 17th Century Rectorand wife. The Rector, ReverendDavid Powell, is dressed in splendidperiod costume but his facialembellishments are mostimpressive. A noble moustachesweeps back to his ears and hisbeard is composed of five plaits. TheRector's wife stands on the left andis dressed in authentic Welshcostume of the time. It is interestingto note that she wears her weddingring on the second finger of herright hand, as was customary at thatdate. The lady's feet are depicted, bythe sculptor, as would be seen fromthe side. The odd thing about these twostone memorials is that whilst theReverend Powell is recorded asdying in 1621, his wife's memorialis dated 22ndApril 1715. The dressstyle of the couple is contemporary, but the dates suggest that his wifeoutlived the Reverend Powell, bysome 94 years. It seems more likelythat some vandal has adjusted thedate of Mrs Powell's memorial. From Llanvetherine carry straighton along the B4521 to reachAbergavenny and thus completeyour visit to the trilateral of threecastles,

Nash Point
Nash Point Lighthouse is aniconic 19th century, grade 2listed, historic building. It is amajor part of our social andmaritime history and was the lastmanned lighthouse in Wales, being de-manned in August 1998.The station was built between1831 -1832 using stone quarriedfrom the beach below the station, which was then winched up thecliff and dressed on site by veryskilled masons. There is also oneof only a few sets of compressed-air, ‘Siren-type’ Fog Signals in thewhole country. These are nolonger used as an Aid toNavigation, being discontinued in
the mid 1990s. They wererestored between 2002 – 2006 byTrinity House engineers in theirspare time and using anyavailable spares and though it willnot damage or harm your ears (itmay make you jump) it can beheard from up to 20 miles away. The fog horn is currently out ofuse in order for an assessmentof its mechanical condition. Nash Point Visitor Centre is openon weekends and Bank Holidaysduring most of Spring, Summerand Autumn as well as onWednesdays during local schoolholidays. Opening times are from12.30-5.30pm during British
Summer Time and from 12.00-4.30pm during G.M.T. For more information about thebeaches please call Vale ofGlamorgan Tourism on 01446704867.
Nash Point is a headland and beach in the Vale of Glamorgan, popular with visitors who come to see the superb lighthouse andwith walkers who enjoy the stunning scenery on the CoastalPath. A short circular walk (approx. four miles) from Nash Point toSt Donats can be accessed along the cliff tops. Ample parking ischargeable when refreshment hut & WC is open. Dogs arewelcome all year round.
The 'fall of the fuller' or 'fallof the woollen washer' isthe lowermost of the threecelebrated falls on theMellte, which is within theWaterfall Country in theFforest Fawr section of theBrecon Beacons NationalPark. It is well worth visiting thisbeautiful waterfall andenjoying the wonders ofnature all around. DOG FOULING
Dog walkers who fail to clean
up leave behind a deeply
unpleasant and potentially
harmful problem. Toxocara
canis is a round worm found in
dog faeces which may cause
stomach upsets and serious
eye disorders.
If you are a dog owner, you
have a legal duty to clean up
every time your dog messes in
a public place. Dog owners who
do not clear up after their dogs
are issued with a fixed penalty
notice of £75 and failure to pay
could result in a court
appearance with a fine of up to
£1000.
It is astonishing that people
take the trouble to bag dog
waste and then throw it in a
hedge, a tree or on the ground.
This is a littering offence and
liable to the same penalties as
above.
Please be responsible
and always clean up
after your dog, we
will all appreciate the
effort you make and you’ll
feel that you’re doing the right
thing.
Few subjects stir the emotions as much asdog fouling!
