Jeremy Brazendale admit- ted causing serious harm to Shaun Dennington who suffered a broken eye socket, elbow and ribs and bruising — when he gave him ‘‘a good flogging’’ with a piece of wood. Justice Judith Kelly said: ‘‘That does not begin to describe it. You delivered a savage beating with a wea- pon to a man lying helpless on the ground. ‘‘Mr Dennington was ag- gressive . . . your initial reac- tion, to your credit, was to try to calm him down. ‘‘Then he punched you in the face. You were entitled to defend yourself and your home. But what you did can only be described as an ex- treme overreaction.’’ The court heard Mr Den- nington was drinking with a woman at Wisdom Bar on Mitchell St when he became angry about a friend’s trou- ble with an ex-partner named Jack Ranshaw. He rocked up to con- front Mr Ranshaw, who was at Brazendale’s home, and pushed his way inside the house. Brazendale tried to con- vince the victim to go home but Mr Dennington punched him in the face. He grabbed a 5cm-wide piece of timber and jabbed Mr Dennington, making him fall out the door. He continued to strike him as he lay on the ground try- ing to shield himself. Mr Dennington then fled. Justice Kelly said Brazen- dale had a long criminal history, including assaults on a police officer and a pub- lic servant. Brazendale will serve nine months of a 27-month head sentence before being re- leased on a bond. She last week won the ALDI and Barnardos Mother of the Week prize and is in the running for the big one. ‘‘I saw the ad on TV and as I was watching it I kind of looked at mum and she was like, ‘What?’,’’ the 14-year-old Gunn resident said. ‘‘And then I went, ‘Where’s your computer?’ and I went over and nominated her. ‘‘What inspired me to do it is that whenever I need something or need to go somewhere, all the time, she’s always there. No mat- ter what, pretty much, she is always there.’’ Mother-of-two Nicole Montgomery said she was honoured to be recognised. Barnardos Australia mar- keting and fundraising direc- tor Manisha Amin said Nicole always put her family before herself, and with her husband working in the de- fence force she had to juggle her sons’ sport and after- school activities. To nominate someone, go to motheroftheyear.com.au. En- tries close on February 15. The winner will be named in May.
