Gatto betlink probeBy ANTHONY DOWSLEY
and PADRAIC MURPHY
MELBOURNE: Underworld figureand businessman Mick Gatto hasbeen probed over suspected links toan offshore sports gambling businessdespite being banned from Victoria’scasino and racetracks.
News Limited has learned the one-time bouncer and lookout at illegaltwo-up games around Carlton alleg-edly had a stake in small betting agen-cy Vilabet — an online gambling siteset up in Vanuatu.
Vanuatu is a destination for gam-bling companies because they are notrestricted by tight licensing controls.
The company has since changed itsname to BetJack.
The revelation comes as bettingagencies yesterday suspended bettingon Essendon games and the club’sBrownlow favourites amid calls fromour leaders to ban AFL betting.
Gatto has denied any link toVilabet or BetJack although he ad-mitted he knew its owner. ‘‘BetJack, yeah I know a bloke who owns it but(it’s) got nothing to do with me,’’he said.
He was also relaxed about any in-vestigation into his business activi-ties. ‘‘It won’t have much to it becauseit’ll go nowhere, it’s got nothing to dowith me buddy,’’ he said.
The former heavyweight boxer isalready under pressure from the taxdepartment over unpaid income andis struggling to keep his crane busi-ness afloat.
Gatto is not listed by ASIC as a di-rector or investor in the offshore bet-ting company.
Vilabet was set up on November 16,2010 and changed to BetJack onMarch 1, 2011. Both are listed as Aust-ralian proprietary companies and ithas an office in Sydney.
