Welcome to the 21st Annual Lassle Ranch Simmentals production sale. What an exciting year it has been in the cattle business! With many areas that have been in a drought the last several years finally getting some moisture, record feeder calf prices, and falling feed prices we are feeling extra blessed this year, and couldn’t be more excited to bring you this group of bulls. Our goal at LRS has always been, “Satisfied Customers,” that’s why we hope you will let us know how our bulls are working for you. We strive to make the bulls better every year, and we feel that we have accomplished that again this year, but if you, our valued customers don’t agree, what we think doesn’t mean a thing. Let us know if you have any problems with your purchase and we will do our best to correct them. The bulls will be fed until April 1st, fertility tested, and delivered to your ranch. As always, the bulls have all been tested for BVD-PI and are certified negative. Any bull that has parentage that indicates he has a chance of being a carrier for a known genetic defect at the time of the sale has been tested. All bulls carrying a known, lethal genetic defect have been culled from the sale. As Developmental Duplication (DD) has not been recognized as a lethal genetic defect we have chosen to test the potential carriers for this condition and note their carrier status in the catalog for you to use as a selection tool. We have also picked a select group of bulls to perform genomic testing on. This DNA test will add accuracy to the EPD’s on the bulls that have been tested. We will have all genomically enhanced EPD’s available on the website prior to the sale and updated supplement sheets available for you on sale day. If not indicated by parentage, all bulls have been tested to determine if they are homozygous black and you will find this information listed in the catalog. We will be taking video on all of the bulls this year, and those will be offered on our website, so please visit us at www.lassleranchsimmentals.com for videos and important updates! An exciting addition to the sale this year is a select group of bred heifers. When we decided to sell bred heifers in the sale we knew we wanted to make it extra special, so instead of us choosing the heifers that would be in the sale, we let nature do the work. Before we A.I.’ed heifers this spring we said that all heifers that bred up first service and that were determined to be carrying a heifer calf when we ultrasounded would go in the sale pen, and that’s what we did. To say that these heifers are from the heart of our herd, and that it will be hard to see them leave is an understatement, but we set out to offer you our best and that is what we are going to do. Many of these heifers are the direct result of our extensive embryo transfer program and can be traced back to our herd matriarchs such as LRS MS Hummer 708T, LRS MS Kilowatt 526R, LRS MS Dakota 559R, and LRS MS PREF BEEF 521R. In addition to the 22 black heifers in the sale, we will also be offering 3 red bred heifers. As we sold our last four red cows in last year’s sale these are the last three red animals on the place. The reason we are selling them is the same as the cows last year, we are trying to produce homozygous black bulls in volume, and it becomes difficult to manage a “red program” with so few head. On a personal note, we have had an exciting year as well! As you all know, we are a family operation and things wouldn’t run around here without everyone involved. Erwin still makes it out to the ranch as much as he can. He still does a big chunk of the farming around here. Sarah, Ryan, Grace and Harper continue to be weekend warriors, traveling at least half of the weekends from Billings to help out with whatever is needed. We added a son-in-law, Scott Schultz, to the family in July, and Scott and Stephanie continue to live in Hysham. By sale time, we will have one other new addition as they are due to become parents in the middle of January. Travis and Alix bought their first house in Ranchester, WY this spring and are busy with their careers and puppy, Toby. In closing, we want to take this opportunity to say “Thank You” to all of our friends and customers whom have supported our program. $100.00 off cattle that are taken sale day. Free feed on any bull over $1750.00 until the first of April. On the bulls that we winter, we will have them fertility tested and fertility certificates issued. Insurance will be available sale day – we encourage you to insure bulls that we winter.

Retained Semen InterestThe buyer will receive full possession, 100% salvage value and ¾ semen interest of any bull purchased in this sale, while Lassle Ranch Simmentals will retain ¼ semen in these bulls. The buyer has the option – The day of the sale to purchase Lassle semen interest for 25% of the sale price. An example: bull brings $10,000.00 X 25% = $2500.00, If buyer chooses to buy Lassle Semen interest he will pay $12,500.00 the day of the sale. Lassle Ranch Simmentals will reserve 300 units of semen for in herd use only. If semen interest is not purchased this semen interest royalty entitles LRS to ¼ of the revenues of any semen sold. LRS semen interest remains even

if the bull or any interest in the bull is sold to a third party. It is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure that LRS interest is upheld if semen is ever sold. The buyer must also inform any third party of Lassle Ranch Simmentals semen interest if bull is ever sold. Lassle Ranch Simmentals will not be responsible for expenses related to semen collection or promotion of any bull purchased unless a mutual agreement is reached for the expenses prior to semen collection.

Full Purchase Value Extended Warranty on Sale BullsEvery bull selling carries a 100% guarantee extended warranty for one breeding season provided the bull is managed properly and acceptable nutritional physical health. In the event a customer has any problem in with a bull (health, injury or death) prior to or during the bulls first breeding season the customer should immediately contact Lassle Ranch Simmentals to report a claim. A veterinarian’s statement of the problem will be required and Lassle Ranch reserves the right to have the bull returned if deemed necessary. A replacement bull of mutually agreed upon quality will be provided if Lassle Ranch has one available. In the event a satisfactory replacement is not available, the customer will be given a full credit (minus a salvage value of $1000 for original bull) to be used in a future Lassle Ranch Sale. LRS will not be held responsible under any circumstances for any settlement amount exceeding the purchase price of bull. No one can guarantee that every animal will perform perfectly, but at Lassle Ranch Simmentals we can guarantee that we will make things right if they do not.

Testicle MeasurementsThe scrotal circumference of each bull was tape-measured on December 22, 2013. The scrotal measurement were adjusted to yearling and sometimes will vary one way or another as actual yearlings. We guarantee our bulls 100% for fertility – unless damage is induced at your ranch – and then it’s out of our control.

Suggested Guidelines for using Yearling BullsWe are firm believers in the use of yearling bulls and feel it is one of the best years of their lives. It is a time when they are easy to manage and their only concern is breeding cows. We have found that yearling bulls that are managed carefully during the second year of their lives, not only do well, but they will perform better over time. Below are some suggested guidelines for the care of yearling bulls.• Upon deliver to your ranch, keep yearling bulls separate from

older bulls and feed them a maintenance ration of 5-8 lbs per head of grain and free choice hay. Reduce the amount of grain fed gradually, so that bulls are on straight hay or grass 2-4 weeks prior to the breeding season.

• Where possible try to limit the bulls and put them in separate pastures with plenty of good quality grass. It is best to achieve the growth and strength to compete with older bulls for feed and space.

• You will see the benefit of a little added cost and care of feeding a yearling bull by probably two or three more years of service from a well managed and healthy bull.

Cattle with advanced genetic potential, greater levels of health and nutrition are worth more simply because they have the potential to deliver more value with less risk for their next owner. Everyone wants a premium for their efforts, but to access a larger and better market you need to consider showing your production to a larger and better audience. Week in and week out the market values generated by Superior Livestock set the standard by which premium prices are measured. Let your seedstock provider and Allied Genetic Resources provide you the service you need to take advantage of that added value.

All of us struggle when it comes to determining a market value for our calves. Ask too little and leave dollars on the table, ask too much and risk losing a sale. Most of us would rather take a whipping than decide whether or not to accept an offered price or answer the question, “what do you want for your calves?” Allied can help you through that process by representing your best interest in the sale of your feeder cattle or potential replacement females. Your seedstock provider, with help from Allied staff, can help you set a fair and justified premium price for your cattle and then represent them to the world through Superior Livestock’s massive network of buyers. Instead of counting on 3 or 4 buyers to fairly compete for your better calves, represent them to 7,000 new ones in addition to the 3 or 4 you’ve dealt with in the past.

The Superior marketing option we prefer and specialize in is the Country Page program (www.superiorlivestock.com). This internet based, private treaty style option allows you to set an asking price with delivery details that suit your program and not commit you to a single day’s market with the potential risk and volatility that we see more and more of these days. Buyers then have the option to “buy now” at the asking price you’ve listed or place a bid on those cattle that can be raised by another bidder or accepted at any point by the seller. Your representative can help you with setting that desired price and all the details of delivery, video and the extra value descriptions that make one set of cattle more attractive to buyers than another. Of course the regular Superior Livestock Video Auctions are always a great option for those who believe there is more value to be gained by that method of selling and your producer representative is fully capable of handling the details to get your calves promoted for sale on TV.

Of course, larger groups (semi loads) are best suited for these types of sales, but your representative is ready to assist you in working with other producers to market your calves together and take advantage of the extra value larger numbers can attract. Certainly there is greater effort involved in marketing this way, but the rewards can be great.

Your seedstock source has a vested interest in your success because it is directly tied to his or her own long term success. Who else knows more about the value of your production than someone you work with regularly to make improvement. Lots 1- 5: This could be the very best flush that we have had to date at the Lassle Ranch. These MCM Top Grades out of our LRS Ms Dakota 559R donor are what we have been striving to produce for the last 30 plus years. They are all homozygous polled and black with the phenotype and structure good cattlemen will appreciate. They are packed full of meat and muscle, yet soft enough to be extremely attractive. Their EPD’s for birth rank in the top 35%, weaning weight in the top 30%, yearling weight in the top 15%, REA in the top 50% and marbling in the top 4% for purebred bulls. Lots 6 – 11: Here is another group of our Top Grade sired bulls out of our LS Ms Dakota 558R donor. 558R is actually a twin sister to the 559R cow. This flush wasn’t quite as powerful as the previous flush but still a top set of bulls. They are all homozygous black and polled, moderate in frame and thick made. Here is a bull that you will notice in the pen because of his phenotype and when you see his numbers you will really get excited. His 2 year old Sure Bet dam did a fantastic job and weaned him off at 737 lbs. and ratioed 104. This set of bred heifers is truly a cross section of our 2012 heifer calf crop. We started out with 94 heifers went 2 services of AI and then turned a cleanup bull with them. We ultrasounded the heifers on the 16th of August, and all of the females that were determined to be carrying a heifer calf from the first service are in this sale. There is one red heifer that is carrying a bull calf and another that is bred to the cleanup bull, these are the last of the red cattle on our ranch. We will work with all buyers on finding the most economical trucking for their purchases possible. Once again the Griffin Ranch has agreed to sell 70 head of these outstanding black heifer calves. These heifers will weigh approximately 750lbs. and will be selected out of the top end of over 330 head. The heifers are moderate framed, high volume females that are bred and handled to produce in the real world. The Griffin family sold 3 big loads of steer calves the last week of October with a pay weight of 724 lbs; that show you the producing ability of these female herdmates. There are replacement heifers sold every day, but all the cattle are not created equal. When you have an opportunity to purchase females with this kind of producing ability from a reputation outfit like the Griffin’s don’t miss it. The heifers have had all of their shots and have been poured and are ready to go.
