Profile on Dave Hurstby Jana Kiefer & Phil “Geno” Warlow

Dave Hurst’s been running almost as long assome Lake Run Club members have beenalive. He had a little help from the United

States Army in discovering, oh so long ago, that running wassomething he did well and it helped him achieve his goal ofweight control. Dave’s a big supporter of the Lake Run Cluband likes to show up at races wearing vintage race shirts. Daveis living proof that if you train smart, you can run for a long, long time.

J & G Team: Dave, what was yourfirst race like?

Dave: That was the misnamedBrokaw Marathon in Bloomingtonand Normal, 1978. You had a choiceof races – 1 mile, 2 miles, 6.2 miles,half-marathon. I chose the 2-miler; atthe time, I had never gone more than 3miles.

J & G: 1978? We have dim memoriesof that era… Any special racememories or favorite races you canshare with us?

Dave: The 10K at Mendota in 1983,when I had my PR, was prettyspecial. I couldn’t believe how fast Iwas going, and I never came close tothat time again.

My favorite? That’s easy – the CanalConnection. I’ve done it every yearsince 1985. Why? It’s easy; it’s inthe scenic Starved Rock area; and it’sa nice drive, giving me plenty of timeto listen to my CDs of ‘50s and ‘60smusic.

G & J: Where do you train?

Dave: I have several favorites, but just to name one, it’s a routeI call Trail South. It’s a branch of the Constitution Trail thatstarts at Lincoln Street, runs south to Hamilton Road, then westto Morrissey Drive (Route 150). I run it usually in early-morning darkness. Part of the trail isn’t near a street, so thereare no lights, except maybe moonlight. It’s spooky.

J & G: You’re weird, but we like you, anyway. How far wouldyou travel for a race?

Dave: I have no desire to run anywhere outside Illinois. Forone thing, I don’t do marathons. And I avoid popular races thatdraw thousands of runners, because I don’t like crowds.

J & G: What’s your best running alone story?

Dave: During a trail run near Decatur circa 1990, I was runningalone when I heard a crashing noise in the distance. At first Ithought some runner had gotten lost and was trying to find therace. Then I saw what it was – a deer who was heading for aspot I’d be crossing in about 15 seconds. I yielded to her.

J & G: Probably a good choice, Dave. That’s almost as good asthe Bob Lambert story of the mountain lion at Comlara. Wesuppose the next thing you’ll tell us is that you’ve seen RichBeal.

Dave: As I said in my first “Over theEdge” column: Who IS this Rich Beal, and why are people reporting“sightings” of him? Actually, I knowwho Rich is, and I saw him at Run theWoods, where I believe he was therace director. What I don’t get is whya “sighting” of him is particularlysignificant? I know that in the Bostonarea, people report “sightings” ofKennedy family members. Is Rich aKennedy?

J & G: Hard to tell, Dave. We haveheard rumors… When you’re notRich spotting, what else do you liketo do?

Dave: That’s easy – Chilly Chili!Technically it’s not a race, but whereelse can you run with people in weirdget-ups and nibble on hors d’oeuvresin the woods?

G & J: Not just hors d’oeuvres,Dave, SPAM in various disguises! How’s your training shaping up forthis season? Any goals?

Dave: I’m always training, but notfor specific races. All my training

runs are 10Ks. My races range from 5Ks to 15Ks, so at least intheory I’m always ready for anything. Goals? To continuerunning and try to avoid getting any slower.

J & G: Sounds like a good plan. Do you have a specific planbefore a big race or special running gear you’re especially fondof?

Dave: I try to get to all races about one hour before race time sothat I have plenty of time for a practice run and for pinning mybib number to my shorts without drawing blood. I neverthought much about it, but I guess my blue and white nylonsinglet from a brutal 10K at a place called Lake Thunderbirdnorth of Peoria in 1986 is pretty special. People at races arealways asking me about it.

by Sherry Detloff

Have you ever found yourself in adown-in-the-dumps running slump? Idid recently when I had two coldswithin five weeks of each other and Imissed out on a week of running duringeach cold. Maybe I was suffering fromrunning withdrawal or a lack ofendorphins during those two week-longdown times. I’ve never had such astart-stop-start-stop running season!Being sick is almost as frustrating anddiscouraging as being injured. So,whaddya do to pull yourself out of thedumps? Here’s what worked for me;I’m sharing these tips in case you everfind yourself in a slump.

• I reminded myself that colds aren’t life-threatening illnesses— just an inconvenience — and that it’s a lot easier torecover from a cold than an injury. I think one of everyrunner’s goals is to remain injury-free.

• I listened to my body instead of succumbing to the urge torun — you know, that little voice inside your head that

SShheerrrryy’’ss OObbsseerrvvaattiioonnss says, “It’s Sunday. You always run on Sunday.” I told thelittle voice inside my head to shut up and leave me alone.

• I whined to my ever-so-patient running buddies whoreminded me that I recovered from two injuries, returned torunning and that I WILL run again. They’re right. I thinkwe’ve all been through times when we wondered, “Will Ievery run again?” If you want to badly enough, you will.

• Being a Catch The Wave team leader helped me ease backinto running and helped me keep what little sanity I hadleft. I can’t remember a season when I’ve enjoyed myCatch The Wave team so much. There’s something aboutour team that gelled. And my fellow team leaders havebeen equally encouraging. Being a Catch The Wave teamleader is good therapy, both physically and mentally.

• To lessen the chances of reinjury, I run once a week on atreadmill, giving my knees and feet some relief. Okay, Iadmit it: I like watching the closed-caption televisions! They’re a pleasant distraction, and I get to watch bizarreshows that I don’t normally watch at home, like ‘I LoveNew York’ — and I’m not talking about the city!

• Vary your running schedule; be flexible. You can run onany day of the week, at any time of the day. I was stuck inthe Tuesday-Thursday-weekend rut. I ran on a Monday, and it didn’t kill me. Okay, running outdoors in 87 degreeweather wasn’t too smart (not only should you listen toyour body but you should listen to the weatherman too),so after running outdoors for two miles — here comes theflexible part — I headed to the gym and finished my lasttwo miles on a treadmill.

• I can’t say enough about running with a partner or a group.I’m a social runner who talks while she runs (no, really?),and when I run with my ‘home girls’, time and the milesjust fly by. We keep each other motivated, keep each othergoing and support each other. Thank you, Home Girls.

• Vary your route. I live a half-block from the ConstitutionTrail, and since it’s close by, that’s where I usually run.The trail heads in many directions; if you usually run thenorth-south leg of the trail, try the east-west branch. Ortry a change of scenery. I enjoyed a run around the outerperimeter of Tipton Park and was amazed by all of the newhouses that are being built. The violets growing wild on theside of the path were so beautiful that I almost stopped topick a fistful. White Oak Park is another fun place to run— exactly one mile around the lake — but watch out forthe duck poop!

• Run in a new race or a different town. I can’t believe I’venever run in Champaign-Urbana, so I signed up for the‘Twin Cities Twosome’ on May 12 at Crystal Lake Park. Ialso signed up for a 5K in Eureka on June 2 just because Ilike the name: the ‘Tumor Terminator’ 5K! (I can’t wait tosee the T-shirts…) It’s a fundraiser for Relay for Life. And don’t forget TNAM — the Thursday Night Accumu-lative Marathon — that begins on May 10. Thanks toKathy Alexander for organizing TNAM again this year!

There! I hope I’ve given you some motivators to keep yourunning, just in case food and beer aren’t enough motivation. I’llsee you at the races.

athletes in his event. A two-time Ironman triathlete himself,Andy didn’t miss a detail.

The support at the race was more than I expected. Two aidstations were very well stocked with food, drinks, first aidsupplies and a great group of people helping out. Aid stationone was manned by triathletes from Peoria and aid station twoat Heaven’s Gate was under the control of runners fromKennekuk Road Runners Club. If you know Kennekuk, youknow beer’s never far away, and that was true at Heaven’s Gate, too. Bless them!

A nice man named Larry cooked for nearly 72 hours straight sorunners always had more food than they could possibly eat.“What can I get you?” were the first words you heard as youfinished each loop. I was also impressed by the man who stoodout in the middle of nowhere with a flashlight all night long toguide runners through a particularly bad mud hole. And I’llalways remember what it was like to hear the bagpipe player onthe hill as the 50 & 100 mile race began.

The people — it’s always the people who make these eventsmemorable. I’ll forget how dog-tired I was at the end. I’ll forgetabout feeling so sore that I was afraid I wouldn’t be able tomove the next morning. I’ll forget all about the pain. But I’llnever forget the people.

Enjoy the summer and stay safe, please.

Last August I receivedan e-mail from CurtLowry that said:“Heather (Curt’sdaughter) and I havesigned up for theMcNaughton 50-mileTrail Run next April. How about you? Areyou tough enough?”How could I let achallenge like that goby? I signed up forMcNaughton the

following day. I thought I was just registering for a ‘Trail Run’.Little did I know…

What I remember most about the event was the people — it’salways the people. I love running because of the people I meetalong the way. The McNaughton run was no different. RaceDirector Andy Weinberg met us when we arrived and gave us afirst-hand description of the route. He made sure we hadeverything we needed and he answered all our questions. Hewas funny, excited, enthusiastic, and very focused on the

President’s Messageby Jana Kiefer

G & J: It’s obvious that as a long-time runner, you must adhereto a strict training diet—would you share your secret?

Dave: Steak, seafood, sweet potatoes, ice cream, gin martinisand an occasional beer. Seriously, I don’t do training foods.

G & J: Sounds like training food to us! Do you run withanyone special?

Dave: No. It would be hard to find someone who runs as earlyas I do, and I run faster if I’m not talking to someone. Multi-tasking isn’t my thing.

G & J: Our usual big-finish wrap-up question—why do you doit????

Dave: The probability of adding a few years to your life; a goodfeeling (you know, the endorphins thing); and the friends youmake through doing races.

The world of running according to Dave Hurst. It’s not all aboutspeed or distance; it’s about getting out there and doing it. It’sabout enjoying the process and appreciating the results. Dave, thanks for sharing some of your running experiences with ourrunning readers. Enjoy the summer running opportunities, everyone! See you next month.

The Volunteer Committee worked very hardlast winter to review the entire volunteer point system. Therevisions were explained and listed in the April newsletter.

Park 2 Park 5MCircuit Race Profile:

by Paul Peacock

The Details:Park 2 Park has been an annual running celebration of Indepen-dence Day for over 20 years in Bloomington-Normal. The nameof the race comes from its route, which takes runners fromMiller Park in Bloomington to Fairview Park in Normal. TheFourth of July falls on a Wednesday this year and the race willstart from Miller Park at 7:30 am. Bus shuttles are availablebetween the two parks before and after the race so that the five-mile course doesn’t become a 10-mile race, unless of course youwant it to. Online registration is available this year onActive.com and race day registration begins at the main pavilionin Miller Park at 6:00 am.

The Course:The five-mile course begins in the center of Miller Park andloops around the park road before heading out onto Wood Streetjust before mile one. Runners head east toward downtownBloomington on Wood Street until reaching South Main Street, where the course heads north toward Normal. The race stays onMain Street for the remainder of the course until it reaches theentrance to Fairview Park. Thanks to the great support of bothBloomington and Normal Police departments, runners have atleast one whole car lane for the entire race. It makes you feelpretty important to run through major intersections as policehold back traffic to let you by. Even though my wife swearsthis course is all uphill, empirical evidence to the contrary can befound on the course map at: http://www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=124911

The Director(s):Julie Howell and Leann Steidinger took over as co-directorsof Park 2 Park last year when Ron Barnette stepped down. Both are active members of the Lake Run Club and enjoy findingmany different ways to challenge themselves in the outdoors.Julie became a transplant from the Chicago area when she washired as a Spanish teacher at Normal Community High Schoolafter graduating from ISU. In 1998 she ran her first marathonand since then has tallied a total of 28 marathons in 14 differentstates. By the time this article is published, she will have addedanother to both totals. She has gradually brought her time downand is aiming for a Boston qualifying time this fall.

Julie met Leann through a common group of young femalerunners within the Lake Run Club. While Julie focuses on thelonger distances, Leann likes to combine her running with otheroutdoor pursuits. A Fairbury native, Leann began running whenher sister encouraged her to try to run a mile. After a couple ofweeks of trying, she was so excited to finish without gasping forair. She got hooked on running and has been racing for the pastfour years. Her desire to be active and outdoors has introducedher to many activities including mountain biking, rock climbing, water skiing, and triathlons. When Julie approached her at atriathlon about helping direct last year’s race, she said “Sure, why not?”

How it All Began:Early runnings of this annual race varied in distance with thefirst race held in1985 as a 10K, or at least that is how it wasadvertised. Because many races during that era were notaccurately measured, the 10K course back then may not havebeen too different than the course used for the race today.Kirby and Melinda Cheek helped the Lake Run Club adopt therace in 1993 when McLean County Road Runners folded, andthey directed the race for the first five years. That race was thefirst year for the current accurate five-mile course. Evenaccurate measurements however cannot prevent the frontrunners from leading the pack astray as they did a few yearsago, adding some extra time and distance to the first mile.

The course may have seemed like it was short for Bloomingtonnative Christin Wurth when she finished fourth overall toclock the women’s record of 28:30 in 2003. She remains one ofthe top female runners in the nation today competing in the1500 meters. The men’s record was set in 1995 by Carl Daviesof Normal with a time of 23:42.

The Experience:While Fourth of July weather is very predictable—typicallyHOT and HUMID—turnout for this circuit race has grown to

400-500 runners. Maybe it has something to do with thecourse. How often can a person run right down Main Street inBloomington-Normal? The temperature is hot, the distance ischallenging, and the terrain is at times harsh. However, theachievement of crossing that finish line makes it all worthwhile. For all of the miles logged during the cold winter months, thisrace is the payback. It is a celebration of summer and ournation’s independence wrapped into one.

Best Reason to Run:There’s definitely something about the Fourth of July thatbrings people out to celebrate. Some celebrate by attempting tolight themselves and others on fire while others run five milesdown Main Street. While many see Independence Day as theclimax of the summer season, the truth is that this race starts itoff with a bang! Julie and Leann will even help get you in themood to celebrate by throwing in a star-spangled bandana towear during the race. For me, there are other reasons to run. Itwill hopefully be my first race in over a year due to a kneeinjury and subsequent surgery, and also mark five years since Imissed this race due to death of my father. My wife, Kris, hadjust returned from pre-registering me when I received the callthat my father had suffered a severe heart attack. I hope tofinish the race this year in his memory, wearing the shirt from2002.

Awesome day! Heartwarming day! An ABC record 59participants! $1,025 raised for Myles Farnsworth’s medicalfund maintained by The Main Street Bank and Trust. Myles isa wonderful 8-year-old boy who has Neuroblastoma, a commoncancer in children. Myles’ parents, Dean and AmyFarnsworth, and his aunt, Lake Run Club member SarahJacobs, joined us and personally expressed their heartfeltgratitude!

The hosts (Pam Walden, Bob Catanese, Dawn Dieckgrafe,Julie Heitz, Becky and Curt Simpson,) prepared well byrenting the shelter at Dawson Lake, making a major grocery runto Sam’s Club, and obtaining prizes for the Easter Egg hunt. While we were running, the hosts were busy preparing sausageand pancakes and setting out juices and muffins and fruit. Thelarge spread was supplemented with Meg Anderson’s coffeecake (an ABC tradition), Vicki King’s Panera bagels (an ABCtradition), and Steve Barr’s chocolate milk (I hope this becomesa tradition). There were probably other contributions as wellbut it’s hard to remember them all. Thanks to everyone for allthe support!

The runners once again won the “runner versus biker challenge”by $895 to $130. Five bikers rode to join us and one biker sentin a check directly to Myles’ fund at the Main Street Bank andTrust. Thanks again to the McLean County Wheelers forsupporting ABC Runs!

What a great day to run — cool and sunny! Some runners ranlaps around the lake within the park while others venturedoutside the park on a loop course running by the new windmills,West Park, and a large country estate. It was such a great day torun that a couple of friendly dogs joined us. I didn’t see anydogs when I marked the course, so you never know. DebLowell encountered a wildlife hazard on the loop inside the park— a hissing, nest-protecting goose. Goose attacks have neverhappened before, unless you count the ABC run at ComlaraPark in 2005 when a flying goose winged Matt Stevenson onthe head and other geese untied the shoelaces of several runners(not while they were running, of course…)

What an amazing turnout — 59 participants, including 20 first-time ABC runners. We even had all five runners who hadparticipated in the first ABC run back in January 2005 (MerlinAnderson, Kevin Fahling, Mike Heffron, Larry Heitz andMary Ellen Schupbach). Back then, I don’t think any of usthought we would see an ABC event have more than ten timesas many people, with contributions totaling more than ten timesas much as that first ABC run.

I can’t really find the words to adequately thank everyone but Ithink the Farnsworth’s wrote it best in a note saying, “Thankyou from the bottom of our hearts for all of your hard work andfor your passion for helping others! We wish you all the worldhas to offer! Dean, Amy, Brooke & Myles Farnsworth”.

Miles for Mylesby Sarah Jacobs

What a beautiful spring day we had on April 15 for another ofMerlin Anderson’s ABC (Adventures Benefiting Children)events! This was event number 23 and we had a record turn outof over 55 participants who rose early on a Sunday morning todrive (or bike) to Dawson Lake for runs/rides of varying lengths.Afterward everyone enjoyed freshly cooked pancakes, sausage, and other goodies for a lakeside breakfast. There was even apost-Easter Egg hunt that brought some lucky finders candy andlocally donated gift certificates!

Pam Walden, the Lake Run Club Volunteer Coordinator, and agroup of her fantastic friends conceived and executed thiswonderful event to benefit my 8 and 1/2 year old nephew MylesFarnsworth, who is battling cancer. Bob Catanese, DawnDieckgrafe, Cheryl Dwyer, Julie Heitz, and Becky and CurtSimpson rounded out the group of hard-working, generouspeople who pulled off not only a great event but the mostperfect weather a runner could ask for! I can’t thank themenough for all their work in turning an idea into the reality ofsuch a quality event! I am so very grateful for everyone whoparticipated and generously donated to help my sister’s family. Thanks also to those who were unable to attend but still sentdonations! This is another reminder of the incredible commu-nity we live, work, run and bike in – in our little corner of theworld.

My sister Amy Farnsworth and our sister-in-law CherylJacobs were introduced to the Lake Run Club in 2002 whenthey joined the LRC Marathon Training Group to run their firstmarathon in Chicago. Nearly every weekend they drove herevery early in the morning from Decatur/Mt. Zion, to enjoy thecamaraderie of LRC members and the gift of our wonderfulConstitution Trail. Just days after successfully completing the

25th annual Chicago Marathon, Amy learned her then 4-year-oldson had a very aggressive form of Neuroblastoma cancer andtheir lives immediately turned upside-down. The cancer hasreturned each time Myles has been treated over the last 4 and 1/2 years.

Options for his treatment now are dependent on new researchwith unknown survival rates. Most of us cannot imagine whatAmy and her husband Dean, their 13-year-old daughterBrooke, and Myles have been through. They have learned tolive one day at a time and focus on quality of life as this cancerand its various treatments throws chaos into schedules, school, work, and any other plans to live a “normal” life. Both Amyand Dean have lost jobs due to time spent in the hospital withMyles. Amazingly they pick up the pieces each time and moveon to find other employment with the medical benefits they sodesperately need. In previous years, fundraisers held in theirhome town of Mt. Zion, IL have enabled them to keep movingforward through the recurring threats of losing their home orhaving their utilities turned off.

When you meet Amy, Dean, Brooke and Myles, you would notknow their pain. They have hearts big enough to care for theirfamily and much, much more! Amy recently worked as acounselor for abused children. She wore a pager 24 hours a dayand would frequently be called in the middle of the night to go tothe emergency room to counsel a child and family in crisis. I amtruly blessed with a sister who can manage her own family crisisand still has the love, compassion, and energy to pass along tothose in need.

Thank you to Merlin Anderson, Phil Warlow, and everyone inthe Lake Run Club and the McLean County Wheelers and forsupporting this event and giving your time and money to helpmy sister’s family. You can keep in touch with updates onMyles’ journey to remission as we pray for a cure atwww.SaveMyles.org.

by Curt Lowry

Back when I was training for the Chicago Marathon, PaulMartin asked me a peculiar question, “What are you going to doafter you finish the marathon?” I think I said something like“Get a lot of rest.” Then he said, “I mean, what’s your nextadventure?”

That was a question I had not anticipated. Paul said I shouldthink about the McNaughton Park Trail Runs in April. Theyhave a 50-mile, 100-mile and a new 150-mile event. Of coursePaul would be doing the 150-mile version! He said, “It willkeep you training through the winter. They have a website youcan check out.” I wondered how I could even think aboutrunning 50 miles when I hadn’t even run 26.2 yet, but mycuriosity got the best of me and I took a look. After reading thecourse description, the comments by prior runners, and seeingsome of the pictures, I thought, “This WOULD be a greatadventure”. Since my daughter Heather Lowry had challengedME to do the Chicago marathon I thought SHE should do thiswith me. And knowing the competitive nature of Jana Kiefer, one of my running partners, I emailed them the websiteinformation with the words “ARE YOU TOUGH ENOUGH?”The reply from both was “TOUGHER THAN YOU”. So thenext great adventure was about to begin.

The McNaughton Park Trail Runs is a series of runs of varyingdistances that take place on the same 10-mile loop inMcNaughton Park in Pekin, IL. The 150-mile runners were tobegin at 6pm Friday evening April 13, while the 50- and 100-

mile runners began at 6am Saturday. The 150-milers had 48hours to complete their distance, while the 50- and 100-milershad 36 hours. A few 100-mile runners began Friday night, togive themselves extra time to finish before the race officiallyended at 6pm Sunday night. There were even a few 150-milerswho started at noon on Friday, including Paul Martin. How-ever, anyone who started early would not be eligible for anyawards other than the finisher’s medal.

Each 10 mile loop consisted of 1,600 feet of elevation changeper loop, with hills of varying distance and difficulty (mostlyshort and steep). Each loop also had two 20-30 foot wide creekcrossings. Both crossings were about shin deep. Five 10 mileloops adds up to 8,000 feet of elevation change in all the hillsyou can handle plus 10 cold water creek crossings…

I met some of the other runners at the pasta dinner Friday night.I learned that many of them had already accomplished greatthings as individuals, such as: the 48-hour champion at “Acrossthe Years” who ran 177 miles; the mother who ran 270 milesacross the frozen tundra of Alaska; also runners who have runacross the Gobi Desert. These are everyday people who havejobs and families yet had pushed themselves to the limits ofLIVING and accomplished great things. They all were atMcNaughton Park to compete in the longest continuousdistance race in the entire western hemisphere. What a thrill itwas to be a part of something as great as this right here in ourbackyard.

Saturday, April 14, 2007 – 6am – McNaughton ParkIt was a cold morning, about 36 degrees;I bundled up in the pre-race chill. Glad Ibought a new sleeping bag and airmattress to allow me to keep warm andget some rest. The air was crisp withfresh frost on the course. The 150-milers were coming in after a few loopson the course and still looking prettygood. I was able to get a bear claw andsome water, a banana and a muffin topto eat as we waited for the pre-racemeeting. It was all happening soquickly. After the pre-race meeting, Ilooked around at the other 50- and 100-mile runners as we huddled behind thestarting line, and suddenly the signal to“GO!” was given. I thought to myself,“Oh my gosh… I’m going to run…HOW FREAKIN’ FAR?!”

Loop 1: Miles 0 – 10Paul Martin had come in from his, Ithink, 6th loop and found us at the start/finish. He wanted to run with us to helppace him and to assist us with gettingfamiliar with the course. This helped alot. We bounded down the first hill ofthe course which consisted of some slickmud and an area of washout. It emptied

into a large field of what we didn’t know, but we did know wehad to run around the circumference of the field. Back into thewoods and up a short steep hill, we came out into a grassy areawhere a bag piper played. His song was enough to choke me upas many spectators and crews cheered us on, and it finally sankin that I was going to be running a distance that not too long ago,I never imagined I could or would run.

We continued to feel out the course as mile 1.5 through 3 led usthrough a myriad of steep ups and downs. This section of thecourse ended up being the toughest in my mind with very few‘runable’ areas. At mile 3 was the Totem Pole Aid Station.Special thanks to these volunteers for putting on their smiles for2 days straight and supplying us with a great aid station. Ireally enjoyed the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and theTwizzlers. As we continued, a light rain began to fall. We werewarned about what rain would do to the course; now we had tosimply pray for the best.

From here we headed down the trail towards the first rivercrossing. Course markings led us over a two foot embankmentjumping into three feet of water, which rumor has it was whatKarl Meltzer did (he won the 100-mile event). The rest of ustook a 20-foot side path to cross in an area of shin deep water. No matter what I tried, my feet got drenched here and I wasthankful I’d used Body Glide to help protect them. The waterwas cold, but if you kept moving on the other side, you werequick to warm up.

After some flat running sections, we came to the “rope hill.”This short steep hill had a rope for runners to grab whileclimbing. Once you got past the rope section at the lower partof the hill, it continued upward for at least another 30-50 yards. We then got dumped into more fields of what… we still don’tknow. The tight grooming and row placement made it evidentthat it was a farm of some kind. During this time the raincontinued to fall at a light but steady pace. After running along ameadow and past the cemetery that I thought I might end up inlater, we arrived at Heaven’s Gate Aid Station. This was aboutmile 5.8. These folks were super too. From there we did a

quick 1.1 mile loop in the woods along the creek which dumpedus back out at Heaven’s Gate. Then we headed back outthrough the farms, back into the woods for some more hills, back out into the farms… one more shin deep stream crossingabout 20 feet wide, followed by more hills, past two holes onthe Frisbee golf course, up one last steep hill and back to thestart/finish. The course had been checked out and was soon tobe memorized. We headed to our tents to change socks beforeventuring out again. Loop time - 2 hours 58 minutes.

Loop 2: Miles 10 – 20The second loop got even more interesting. Paul continued torun with us. The massive influx of runners from only forty 150-milers to over 200 total runners combined with light showers toturn the trail into a horrendous and torturous mud slick innumerous places. It was in rough shape… like nothing I hadever seen before. Those who had run these types of racesbefore knew how to lower their center of gravity enough topower through and stay on their feet most of the time. Runnershad to get off the single track and run in the moss and wildflowers to get ANY traction. In some places the mud was 8 to10 inches deep. I heard some runners lost their shoes in the mudpits. EVERYONE was having difficulty in the steep sections. On the uphill you would take 3 steps up and slide 1-2 stepsback. On the downhill you better hang on tight and find a treeor bush or something to slow you down as you slide down theembankment. When we could run I got too warm and when wewalked, too cold. This loop took us over 45 minutes longer tocomplete than the first time. It was going to be a long day andnight. This time we went back to our tents and changed bothsocks and shoes. Loop time - 3 hours 47 minutes.

Loop 3: Miles 21 – 30At the beginning of the third loop, the rain stopped and webegan to see our footing getting better on the ups and downs. This course drains well. The mass of runners trying to gettraction carved footsteps into the side of the hills, which becamea great benefit later in the race. My brother Kent Lowry hadjoined us near the end of the second loop and decided to run thethird loop with us. Jana was feeling great so she and Kent went

on ahead of Heather and me. Because the trail had started toget tackier, they were able to make great time and had a veryfast loop. Heather and I walked a little more to conserveour energy. By the time we finished Heather was prettyexhausted, so when we got to the start/finish area and foundJana, we decided to walk most if not all of the fourth loop.

Kent was glad to be done after just the one loop, since hewas tapering for his marathon in California just 2 weekslater. He was surprised we were in such good shape after 30miles. Inside I didn’t feel in that good of shape! But I knewat this point I was going to finish even if I had to crawl. Wewent to our tents and changed shoes and socks and put onanother layer of clothing since the temperature wasbeginning to drop. We got some food and headed out. Theweather had broken and the clear skies would not be holdingthe heat of the day once the sun went down. Loop time - 2hours 57 minutes for Kent and Jana; 3 hours 28 minutes forHeather and me.

Loop 4: Miles 31 – 40It was about 5:30 in the evening and many 50-mile runnershad finished while some of the 100- and 150-mile runners

were beginning to drop out. This was unfortunate for them, butfortunate for us, as the trail conditions continued to improve. The mud was still sticky and getting down some steeper slopesstill proved to be a trick, but it was easier than before. Butplease don’t be fooled… we still had sections of 8-10 inch deepmud that would stay until the very end. In addition, it would begetting dark soon. Glad I had a headlamp and Heather and Janato keep me company.

We took off walking to conserve our energy, but fast enough tomaintain body heat. This was new territory for us, distance-wise. As the sun set we came across a ridge line after climbing along steep hill and heard something in a tree near us. It was alarge owl looking down on us, watching our every move. What acool sight to see in the woods, especially at dusk. (After talkingwith Jeff Simpson later, we think it was probably a GreatHorned Owl. Awesome!!!) As we made our way to the two aidstations, the volunteers were still there, still with smiles andencouragement. What a welcome sight. It was getting very darkby the second aid station.

Speaking of volunteers, we came to the large mud hole thatduring the day we would bushwhack around to avoid the deepmud, but at night in the dark with only a headlamp, it wasdisorienting to move about in the brush. As we made our wayaround it we did indeed get a little off track, but what a surprisewhen we heard in the direction of the trail a volunteer standingon the other side of the mud hole using his flashlight to guiderunners back to the trail. Now that’s dedication and commit-ment and was greatly appreciated! He and other volunteerswere there all night making sure no one got lost. We made sureto thank the volunteers when we saw them and when we left anaid station.

We finally made it back to the start/finish area but Heather wasin no mood or condition to complete another loop right away.

We decided since this was our first ultra event and we wanted tofinish together, we would get some sleep and finish in themorning. It was getting very cold and the forecast was for a lowof 30 degrees. Some of the runners who had dropped out of the100- or 150-mile distance and others who had already finishedthe 50-mile distance were sitting by the open bonfire in thestart/finish area discussing the course and telling stories of theirencounters with the hills, mud and stream crossings. We sat

there and ate grilled cheese sandwiches and drank soup orbroth, trying to get our strength back. We headed to bed toget warm and prepare for a triumphant finish in themorning. Loop time - 4 hours 1 minute.

Loop 5: Miles 41 – 50During the night and into the early morning, every time the100- and 150-mile runners would come in from completinganother loop, volunteers would get their name so that racedirector Andy Weinberg could announce it over the loudspeaker. He would call out their name and tell everyonehow far they’d gone, “Jason B, 60 miles and still going” or“Paul S, 120 miles with 30 to go.” Some runners referred tothe start/finish as “The Game Show.” It was great after eachloop to run in and get high fives and see smiles from thespectators and volunteers. Andy was such an inspiration. His energy was contagious. As tired as all the runners were,Andy had to be even more tired since he had been up fortwo days prior to the race setting up the course and makingsure everything was ready to go, plus staying up throughthe entire race period until it ended Sunday evening.

Loop 5 went well for us. The rest the night before had donewonders for our energy, and with the sun shining brightlythe course was in much better shape. Knowing it was thelast loop helped a lot too. We had memorized the differentparts of the course and were able to anticipate them. “Just

past this flat area is the rope hill,” “Beyond this hill is the firstaid station,” and “Around the bend is the last stream crossing.”What a sight it was to see the final hill by the Frisbee golf courseand know that we were almost home. We took that hill withenergy that had escaped us earlier and we rounded the corner tothe meadow leading to the finish line. I remember someonerunning out to get our names and numbers so Andy couldannounce our finish: “Number 49, Jana Kiefer; number 60,Heather Lowry; and number 59, Curt Lowry - all 50 milefinishers. Congratulations and well done!”

We had our pictures taken with Andy at the finish line and hehanded us our Belt Buckles, which is the finisher’s medal. Itmay not seem like much, but to us that buckle was made ofGOLD! Or was that blood, sweat and tears? For me it trulywas a precious metal. I wanted this race to be about theexperience and the memories… and it was. I will never forgetthe opportunity I had to share this accomplishment with mydaughter, Heather, and a great running friend, Jana. A specialthanks to Paul Martin for challenging me to sign up for this ultramarathon even before I had run the Chicago marathon. Andguess what Paul, I’ll be going back next year to do it again, butyou probably already knew I would. This stuff gets in yourblood. That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it!Total running time – 19 hours 10 minutesOverall time – 26 hours 26 minutes
