The Fun Run might be about getting

together with the community and helping a

good cause, but no race is complete

without a grand prize. On Sunday,

participants will be in the running to win aGeely MK2.

    The Geely MK2 is a fuel-efficient,

compact-sized city car with plenty of

power to satisfy any driver who wants to

enjoy life cruising through the streets.

    Chinese automaker Geely Automobile

Holdings launched the MK2 in the

Indonesian market earlier this year. The

    compact hatchback boasts a 1500cc,

    4-cylinder in-line 16-valve engine with

    double overhead camshaf and electronic

gasoline injection, which makes for a

responsive and sure driving experience inany road conditions.

Take a look inside the MK2 and youll

find a spacious, sleek and simple interior

that easily holds five people. The car offers

    functionality with 60:40 rear folding

seats, as well as a number of other

    comforts, including remote central

locking, electric windows, a CD and MP3

player, a noise reduction system and

    air-conditioning.

    Safety features include an anti-lock

    braking system, electronic brake force

distribution, air bags for the frontpassenger and driver, and reversing

sensors. Other safety features include a

    high-strength body structure and

anti-collision beams on all four doors.

The MK2 offers a lot of bang for your

buck, especially as Geely Indonesia issues

    a five-year or 130,000-kilometer warranty

    with each of its cars.

    Dont Forget the Grand Prize...

Some of the richest people inJakarta arent millionaires.Theyre volunteers.

Drop by any of the eightSahabat Anak locations

around Jakarta on a Saturday or aSunday from two to four in theafternoon and see for yourself.

Volunteers at Sahabat Anak, andaround the world, know that 100

years from now it wont matter whatkind of house you lived in, what kindof car you drove or how big your bankaccount was. What matters is if youmade a difference.

The first day I met the street kidsin Tanah Abang and heard theirstories, I fell in love, said TheresiaTobing, a student at Guru GobindSingh Gobind University who hasbeen volunteering with Sahabat Anakin Central Jakarta for five years now.

I realized how simple it was to bea volunteer, she said.

Sahabat Anak was established in1997 by a small group of studentsfrom the University of Indonesia whowere committed to making adifference in the lives of Indonesia'sstreet children. As a volunteer-basedorganization, Sahabat Anak focuseson education as a way of breaking thepoverty cycle and providing childrenwith a better future.

Through education we provideaccess, said Lina Tjindra, a currentboard member and one of thefounders of Sahabat Anak. We openthe door so they can take the next

steps in their lives. Its not just tutoring. Its about

telling the kids they did a good job orlistening to their stories. Its aboutsetting a good example. Its aboutbeing a friend. Its about being a rolemodel for them. Its simple things likethis that can help these children andchange their perception of the world.

With more than 100,000 childrenliving and working on the streets ofJakarta, Sahabat Anak faces a huge

task. But like any grassrootsorganization, volunteers at SahabatAnak know that change is abouteveryone doing their part, no matterhow little that part might be.

The beauty of volunteering is thateveryone does it for his or her ownreasons. Some people do it becausethey see it as the right thing to do.Others do it because it makes themfeel like theyre making a difference.

And there are a million ways tovolunteer. You dont have to be able tostand in front of a group of childrenand teach English or show them howPythagorass theorem works.

Children learn in millions ofdifferent ways. Any number of skillsthat each of us possess, a wealth ofknowledge and experience that wecan impart to others, will help tomake a difference. If you can juggleyou can come in and teach a class on

    juggling, which teaches confidenceand perseverance.

Not all volunteers come out andteach the kids on the weekend. Somemaintain the groups Web site, othersfocus on fund-raising andorganizational activities.

Frisca Hutagalung, a volunteer andchairwoman, focuses on Sahabat

Anak Grogol tutors and represents thekids by enrolling them in school andmaking sure their voices are heard.

The kids and their parents needpeople to help them connect to theschools, the hospitals, the police, things like that, she said.

Society has the wrong perspectiveabout these kids. Theyre not invisible. They shouldnt have to always standin the back of the line and wait foreveryone else to go first.

The volunteers at Sahabat Anakare breaking ground on the nextgeneration and reaping the greatestriches of all. In fact, some of those verychildren who were once mentored arenow the ones doing the mentoring.

The kids see us as people theycan look up to, the kind of peoplethey want to be when they grow up,said Sim Sim, who has beenvolunteering at Sahabat An ak

Prumpung, East Jakarta, for almosteight years.

They want a good education. They want to leave a life of poverty. And best of all, they wa nt to grow upand volunteer too.

To find out more and to get involved

    go to www.sahabatanak.com.

You Can Be These Kids Friend

Its not just tutoring. Its about telling the kids theydid a good job or listening to their stories. Its aboutsetting a good example. Its about being a friend.

You dont have to be able to stand in front of a group of kids and teach English or show them how Pythagorass theorem works. Kids learn in millions of different ways.

7Thursday, December 15, 2011 Jakarta Globe Special Supplement: Celebrity 5K Fun Run

When running enthusiasts and celebritiesstep out on to the streets of Jakarta onSunday, they will find themselvesshoulder to shoulder with 1,000 of thecapitals neediest children, on whosebehalf the event has been organized.

For that cause, some of the citys topcelebrities have given their time and willbe pulling on their running shoes too.Among them will be 2010 Miss Universecontestant Qory Sandioriva, who says sheis delighted by the opportunity to supporta good cause.

By joining this Fun Run we contributeto the education of those children. I am

willing to be among the people who aretrying to give them a better future bygiving them the chance to have a betterlife. My team took the initiative to be partof this event and I am very happy toparticipate, she said.

I think the run is a good opportunity tomake a call for everyone to dedicate a fewhours every week to volunteer at SahabatAnak. Any kind of help is valuable becausefirst of all most of these children do nothave access to formal education andpsychological support from their parents.Volunteers can give financial support to

contribute toward school tuition fees, butit is also very important for volunteers tobe able to give some time andpsychological support to those children.

Puteri Indonesia 2011 Maria Selena islooking forward to the Fun Run. Thisevent has social value. That means it canmotivate street children with its spirit oftogetherness said Selena, whorepresented Central Java in PuteriIndonesia. I have no particularpreparations. I just hope my stamina willlast, added Selena, who will representIndonesia in the 2012 Miss Universepageant.

For some celebrities, like Indonesiansinetron (soap opera) actor, singer andmodel Marcellino Lefrand, the run is asmuch a challenge to themselves as it is acontribution to a good cause. I want toparticipate to test my physical fitness, said Marcellino, best known for his rolesin Deru Debu (The Roar of Dust) andBidadari (Angel). I jog every morningbefore I go to work. I also try to get enoughrest before the big day, added Marcellino.

The runs aims resonate withparticipants including sinetron actressLouise Anastasya. I am happy to help thestreet kids for one reason, and that is love.I have the chance to love them like I lovemyself, said Louise, who is known for herroles in sinetrons including Cinta Fitri(Sacred Love) and TV films including

Bunga Untuk Andre (Flowers forAndre). Louise will make no specialpreparations for the run. The onlyspecific preparation I have is from theheart, she said.

Louises fellow actress Larissa Anggiajoined the run for simpler reasons. Thestar of the sinetron Nada Cinta (TheTunes of Love) joined the event becauseshe expected it to be entertaining. She

also liked the events highlighting ofcharity and its aim to reach out and givesomething back to the community.

For Olivia Zalianty, the star of TVsinetrons like Ada Apa Dengan Cinta?(Whats Up With Love?), the Fun Runevokes sentimental memories. It remindsme of my childhood, especially my teenageyears, as I ofen participated in fun runswith my school friends, she recalled. Ihave no particular way to prepare, as I amalready used to running in the morning.Olivia says her morning jogs keep her fit.

Fellow star Kirana Larasati sharedOlivias enthusiasm for morning runs, though shes a rookie when it comes to funruns. My packed schedule sometimeshampers me from jogging. So when I wasasked to participate in the Fun Run, I was

glad to do so, Kirana said. Echoing otherparticipants comments, the star of thesinetrons Azizah and Benci BilangCinta (Hating to Admit Love) also hasmade no specific preparations as she saidshe was taking part in the spirit of fun.

Indonesian violinist Maylaffayza, participating along with her husband andmanager Yasha Chatab, has almost asmuch passion for running as she does for

the violin. I expect to have fun withrunning enthusiasts or people who run fora cause, said the musician, who made aname for herself with her 2010 hitSukaria (Joy). While she and herhusband find fun runs alwaysworthwhile, they believe that its moreworthwhile if its for a good cause, butthen the participant has to know what the

cause is and how they can help.Globe Entertainment artist and talent

manager Venny Lim is just as upbeat asthe rest of the participants. We see thisevent as an exciting move, especially withthe idea of supporting and giving back tothe Yayasan Komunitas Sahabat Anak,Venny said. She also hopes that thecelebrities in the run will encourage theirfellow stars to turn out for the event, as

well as raise awareness of the importanceof being an active supporter of charitablecauses.

Actress Poppy Sovia, whose careerwas launched afer she appeared inPursuit of Mas-Mas in 2007, said thatas well as attracting donations, the eventgives moral support to the children ofSahabat Anak and lets them know thatpeople care about them.

As soon as I heard about th is event Ibecame interested. First of all because by

joining this program I can help thosechildren and also because I neverexperienced running during car-free day.Even though it is just a small bit of help, byparticipating I hope I can contribute tomaking these children happy.Tunggul Wirajuda & Olga Amato
