PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEWe are nearing the middle of Term 4, with only five weeks remaining and our students are preparing to transition into the next grade. Our focus at KPS remains on quality teaching and learning programs for all students in our classrooms. This leads into my next point about attendance.

Applications for Extended Leave

At this time of year, we are having various enquiries about students being taken out of school for holidays or accompanying parents on business trips. We need you to come to the office or send in a note if your intended absence is over 10 school days (10 days and under requires a note to the class teacher) as this extended leave must be signed off by the principal. Where the principal considers that the travel is appropriate an approval will be granted of Extended Leave. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and contribute to your child’s total absences for the year. Research evidence shows that even one week’s absence may have a significant impact on your child’s learning and ask you to carefully consider these choices.

Arrival time

Children should not be arriving at school before 8.50am, unless they catch an early bus. I am noticing an increasing number of students who walk to school or are dropped off by relatives arriving well before this time. I would appreciate your support in making arrangements to ensure your child/ ren do not arrive before 8.50am when staff supervision formally commences. Exceptions to this are early bus arrivals, band students on their respective rehearsal days and children who are attending KOOSH.

Are you moving?

Thank you to the parents who have already responded to the newsletter over the past weeks to let us know you are moving. For those who may have missed this important information: it is that time of the year when we are starting to plan for the 2017 school year. It is important for us to have up to date information about the number of students we can expect to have in each year group. If your family will be moving in 2016/2017, or your child will no longer be attending Kooringal PS, we ask you to notify the school office as soon as possible.

Swimming Scheme

Over the next two weeks students from Years 1-4 are participating in the Intensive Swimming Scheme at the Wagga Swim School. This is an extremely valuable

experience as the program enhances the development of swimmers at their point of need through the instruction of qualified teachers. Every student learns survival skills and work on stroke development which are vital to know, especially as many families head to the coast for a summer break or visit family and friends’ pools. Thanks to Mrs Wenda Guthrie for her organisation of this scheme.

Bev Jenkyn, Acting Principal

BAND NOTESWelcome to Week Six!

Band Recruitment Night

Last Thursday night KPS held the annual Band Recruitment Night. I would like to thank the students and their parents who have shown interest in joining the band.

Being a part of the band is a wonderful way to meet new friends and learn an instrument. It also develops your confidence and helps you with your concentration. You

and family. It was a spectacular day that, again, highlights the talents of so many of our students at KPS. A special thanks to Mr Harris for organising the day and coming along to support the band students and myself, Mrs Jenkyn for her appearance in our proud audience, and especially to Jenny Binovec, our talented and dedicated band conductor.

PROUD AND DEADLY AWARDS 2016Last Tuesday, twenty two students travelled to Wagga Public for the 2016 Proud and Deadly awards ceromony. The annual ceromony acknowledges the hard work and dedication of Riverina’s Indigenous students and awards students with certificates for academic, creative, leadership, cultural and sporting excellence. Our KPS students represented the school beautifully on the day and received awards from three of the five categories, which is an excellent effort.

Mr Kerr

learn organisation skills and team work skills also.

Throughout the year our Junior and Concert Band members participate in many fun activities such as Band Sleepover, Eisteddfods, Sydney Band Trip and the Band Reward Day.

If you are interested in being in the band and weren’t able to make it to Band Recruitment, you haven’t missed out! All you need to do is grab a band information pack from the front office or Mr Harris, fill in the forms and send them back to school.

If you were able to make Band Recruitment Night last Thursday you would have had the opportunity to hear our amazing Concert Band. I would like to thank all of our Concert Band members who performed at our Band Recruitment Night last Thursday evening and their parents who took the time to be their also.

Macquarie Band Visit

On the 16th of November, our school will be hosting a school band from Macquarie Park, who will be performing for us. Our Concert Band are then invited to participate in a workshop with our visiting students.

Due to time constraints, Maquarie Band will not be able to hold workshops this year.

Baptist Community Care

On the 24th of November our bands will be utilising their talents to entertain the residents of the Baptist Care Facility. This will be a wonderful learning experience for our band members as they use their talents to bring a little bit of music and happiness into the lives of others.

A note with further information will be sent home during this week.

Tim Harris, Inschool Band Coordinator

INTER-SCHOOL BAND DAYLast Friday, students in our Junior and Concert Bands participated in the Inter-School Band Day held at the Wagga Wagga Conservatorium of Music. This fun filled day was attended by Kooringal, South Wagga, Sturt and Lake Albert Public Schools. The day is an opportunity for band students to get together with their instruments and rehearse pieces they have been learning back at their own schools. Along with this, they also broke off to tutorials, specific to their instrument, with experienced teachers from the Conservatorium. In the evening, students performed within their individual bands and then as a whole group to an audience filled with friends
