In all of the times I ve participated in first aid courses I dont think anyone has ever told me how to do CPR on myself! Please dont get me wrong – I know you learn things about cuts, burns, bandages, and slings that you can use on yourself, but the bigstuff in first aid is learnt so you can help someone you love or even a stranger. Learning first aid reminds me of one part of this pandemic that some people are struggling with, which is Im not sick so I dont need to keep away from people/stop working/wear a mask/etc.We are constantly being told to do all of these things to try and protect the health of other people, and we hope others are doing this to help protect us as well. In one way it also reminds me of a basic part of the Christian belief, which is that we cant save ourselves but rely on Jesus having done the work for us. I know I dont share with you very much about some of the foundations of Christianity, and I encourage you to explore more about this if youve wondered about the bigger parts of life. I know many churches now are even easier to visitas they provide online services and support systems. This world and all that we are dealing with is difficult enough at the moment, and I want to strongly encourage you to reach out for support wherever you can. From the Principal I have an interesting idea for you to think about – most people learn first aid because it can help someone else…

The reason I’m thinking about this is because later this week some of our Year 11 students will complete a first aid course as part of their studies, and some of our staff learnt new skills (and revisited existing skills) recently when they updated their first aid credentials a few weeks ago. In all of the times I’ve participated in first aid courses I don’t think anyone has ever told me how to do CPR on myself! Please don’t get me wrong – I know you learn things about cuts, burns, bandages, and

slings that you can use on yourself, but the ‘big’ stuff in first aid is learnt so you can help someone you love or even a stranger.

Learning first aid reminds me of one part of this pandemic that some people are struggling with, which is “I’m not sick so I don’t need to keep away from people/stop working/wear a mask/etc.” We are constantly being told to do all of these things to try and protect the health of other people, and we hope others are doing this to help protect us as well.

In one way it also reminds me of a basic part of the Christian belief, which is that we can’t save ourselves but rely on Jesus having done the work for us. I know I don’t share with you very much about some of the foundations of Christianity, and I encourage you to explore more about this if you’ve wondered about the bigger parts of life. I know many churches now are even easier to ‘visit’ as they provide online services and support systems. This world and all that we are dealing with is difficult enough at the moment, and I want to strongly encourage you to reach out for support wherever you can.

Sincerely,

Mr Phillip Wilson Principal

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

For what we thought was going to be a slow-paced term, Term 3 is certainly gaining momentum. It appears that

nothing can stop the wonderful experiences occurring in our classes as teachers and students embark on some

terrific learning journeys together. It has been lovely to introduce and rehome some class pets. KA welcomed a

chick and duckling into their classroom while 1J were excited to meet and name their new budgie ‘Fudge’. Bluey

the turtle has found a new home in 1B and has been keeping Mrs Baldwin and students on their toes. We have

seen many benefits to class pets for children including building a sense of responsibility, developing empathy,

creative approaches to the curriculum and developing respect for the living creatures God has created.

This term has also seen the addition of some other creatures into Junior School however these require batteries

and coding. To build upon our STEM program, we have recently purchased a 3D printer, Ozobots, Edison

robots and a set of rechargeable Beebots. All year groups will have access to these new resources during their

weekly Technology lesson with Mrs Chapman. The students will enjoy the challenge of operating new software

systems and coding platforms to make these ‘bots’ move according to their directions. We look forward to seeing

what the students can achieve throughout this term.

Despite the closure of some offsite gymnasiums, our MPC and extensive gymnastic equipment have ensured the

continuation of our gymnastics program in Term 3. Keeping in line with current COVID precautions, each year

group have been allocated a specific time with cleaning occurring between each session. Mr Skewes and Mr Cox

have been guiding students in the development of specific skills, improving their fitness and flexibility.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS

Finally, the Step Up Challenge is well under way in Junior School with all classes participating enthusiastically. As parents are unable to join us on a Monday morning when class results are announced, we will be including them in the Chronicle each week. See tables below. Please continue to encourage your child to start thinking about how much they move as we use this opportunity to demonstrate the importance of physical activity. Keep moving everyone! Do you love the snow? KS does. They have turned their classroom into a Winter Wonderland this term with an igloo, ski field and snow man. Here are some of the student’s insights so far:

‘If you hold a snowflake it turns into water’ – Cody ‘Snowflakes are not the same sizes’ – Lyndsey ‘You can slide in snow’ – Max ‘It’s so cool making a snow man’ – Matthew Just a reminder that our virtual Book Week parade will go ahead as planned on Friday 4th September. Students can still come to school dressed in their favorite book character however the parade will be recorded for parents to watch online. Further information will be made available closer to the date.

We are continuing to pray for God’s blessing and safety during this time.

In 2009 Tony Woodward finished Year 12 after completing his secondary schooling at the College. Tony has gone on to pursue his dreams capitalising on his strengths and passions. School Days

As a College student Tony was a keen go-cart driver and Design and Technology (D&T) and Maths were his favourite subjects. Some stand out moments were:

Physics lessons with Mr Lee Weissel which included go-carting on the basketball court - the perfect way to learn about motors and engines! BYO go-cart! “I think we caused a bit of a ruckus!”

The Year 9 Tassie trip: “what a great group travel experience”

Maths with Ms Catherine Clarke: “She was a great teacher.”

The community aspect of the College: “the year group activities allowed for the development of friendships outside of general friendship groups.”

“Learning about how to relate to others was one of the most important things I learnt about at the College, I think it is almost more important than subjects

and in the years since leaving school I have come to appreciate just how important relational skills are. They aren’t as easy to develop once you have left school but they are so important in life.”

The Beginning of a Dream

For almost as long as Tony can

remember he has been interested in

racing. In primary school days it was

motorbikes and in his secondary

schooling this progressed to go-carting

which encouraged Tony’s interest in

the technical side of racing. At school

he was enjoying D&T, seeing his

visions progress to a finished product.

By Year 9 or 10 Tony had set his

sights on studying engineering

knowing that one day he wanted to be

part of the motor sport industry.

What is a school without it’s students? The College seeks to ‘Educate for Life’ and in the coming weeks we will be treated to hearing from a number of past students, their memories from school, their dreams for the future and the journeys they have experienced since leaving the College.

MEET TONY WOODWARD, WWCC GRADUATE 2009 CURRENT OCCUPATION: RACE ENGINEER BRAD JONES RACING, V8 SUPERCAR CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM

Page 7: From the Principal · Week 4B, 11.08.2020 02 6923 8888 401 Kooringal Rd, Wagga Wagga, NSW, 2650 From the Principal I have an interesting idea for you to …

Life after School Finishing school Tony was straight into Engineering at University of Wollongong, “An excellent uni to do engineering”. For Tony this was especially true as he had the opportunity to take part in ‘Formula Student’ - a university competition in which teams of students built a working race car from scratch and raced it at the final competition - a similar competition model to the 4x4 Interschool Technology Challenge that current WWCC students are part of and which Tony is now acting as a mentor to as part of their car design and development team. The hands on experience he received through this competition was complemented with work experience at Autobarn Wagga, and volunteering on weekends with a Formula 3 race team. Tony was part of the team who won the championship securing his place as engineer to the team for the German Formula 3 Championship. 2014 was the beginning of Tony’s acceptance into the Brad Jones Race Team, starting out as a Data Engineer, the right hand man to the Race Engineer. After a year in that position he was thrust into Race Engineering, managing pit crews and mechanics and taking charge of training drivers - he is the brains behind how the driver should approach the corner, when to brake etc, making sure drivers have optimum opportunity to do their best on the course. What’s Maths Got to Do with it?

Tony ended his school life enjoying maths, but it hadn’t always been that way. “I was one of those students who would say, ‘Miss, we’re never going to use this’ but I use maths more than anything else I do as a Race Engineer.”

Maths, data crunching and simulations, are used to analyse both driver and car performance. Maths is used to identify how smooth the steering is or how aggressive the braking. Maths allows the establishment of key performance indicators which the drivers rely on to improve their performance.

Tony, as Race Engineer, is in the ear of the driver throughout the race, interpreting the 500 channels of data that are being live streamed from the car and using that to advise the driver how quickly they can go round the next corner or if they are breaking too early.

PAST STUDENT SPOTLIGHT cont . . .

Tony is currently Todd Hazelwood’s Race Engineer and this weekend you can catch the action on Fox Sports, Kayo Sports and Network Ten which will all carry live coverage across both days of the August 15-16 Darwin Triple Crown. We look forward to hearing more news of Tony and other past students in coming weeks and months. Keep an eye on the Past Students’ Network Facebook page for more information and if you are a past student we would love to hear your news - contact Community at [email protected]
