Norton Elementary, it is my pleasure to welcome our Norton families and our tremendous staff members back for another terrific year at Norton! Our vision here at Norton is “Doing more than we have to – to be the best that we can be!” and our students are already doing exactly that by practicing the traits held by good citizens and strong students. Our staff recognizes that a strong partnership with families makes a huge difference in a child’s education, and we look forward to working with you this year. While we will be working to engage our students in quality, meaningful learning opportunities and encouraging them to reach past what they think they can do, we realize that you are doing that in your homes as well. Thank you, in advance, for working with us to help your child experience growth and success in this school year. It is an honor to serve Norton Elementary, and a privilege to be one piece of this amazing community of students, parents, and teachers. Grades 4-6 Presentation Preview Dates Monday, September 19 6:00 PM Curtis Middle School Cafeteria Tuesday, September 20 6:00 PM Ford Middle School Cafeteria Wednesday, September 21 6:00 PM Ereckson Middle School Cafeteria

Parent Preview Night Parents,

On September 1, 2012, Senate Bill 471 (Preventing Child Sexual Abuse and Maltreatment), went into affect. This bill requires school district staff be trained in the warning signs of abuse and how to report it. This bill also requires school districts to educate students in grades K-12 on these same issues.

The Allen ISD Counseling Department is offering parents the opportunity to preview the presentation that will be shown to your 4th-6th grade children. This presentation will cover the topics of healthy vs. unhealthy relationships as well as the various forms of child abuse. It will also educate students on what to do if they or a friend are being abused.

Students in grades K-3 may view The Safe Side Stranger Safety video to introduce or rein-force the concepts of “stranger danger”. Clips of this video may be found by searching “The Safe Side Stranger Safety “ YouTube. Counselors may also choose to utilize the Collin County Children’s Advocacy Center’s Kids Count Players puppet show with grades K-2. Information on that program can be found at http://www.caccollincounty.org/education/kids-count-players.

Should you have any questions about the upcoming workshops, please contact your child’s school counselor. We look forward to seeing you at one of the 3 presentations.

Welcome! My name is Cindy Harvey, RN, school nurse at the Norton clinic. The students may call me Mrs. Harvey or Nurse Cindy; I am happy to respond to either. I am a graduate of Baylor University and have been a nurse for over 25 years, working much of that time in ICU and ER nursing. I am glad to be a part of the team here at Norton Elementary School. My husband and I have 5 children and believe that chil-dren are a precious gift. I will care for your child as I would care for my own.

I try to make the clinic an easy place to come to if needed. My goal is to care for the students and assist

them with the ability to stay in class as much as possible. I rarely call parents on a child's first clinic visit, but have the students try class again. Frequently, they do not return to the clinic that day.

Vision and hearing screening is done throughout the year beginning in October for new students and all

of kindergarten, first, third and fifth grades. Pre-diabetic screening is done at the same time as vision/hearing screening for 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades. If you have a concern regarding your student’s vision or hearing, please call and I will be glad to screen your child at that time. Fifth grade is also screened for scoliosis in May.

I teach a growth and development program called "Always Changing" to fifth grade students in the fall.

Parents are notified before that program is presented and are given the opportunity to preview the video. Texas has specific guidelines about dispensing medication and those guidelines are located in the Stu-

dent Handbook. All medications taken by a student during the school day must have an AISD medica-tion permission form completed by the parent or guardian. You may print the form from the Clinic Forms section on my Website.

Allergy action plans, asthma action plans, seizure action plans, and Unlicensed Diabetic Care Assis-

tant forms are all located under the clinic forms section on my Website. These forms should be completed by the health care provider and parent each school year if the student has a medical need that may necessi-tate care for one of the conditions during the school day. In addition, you may also locate and print your own student's immunization record at any time under the health section of Family Access if you wish to do so.

Texas Public School Immunization Requirements can also be found on the Allen ISD Website on the

Health Services section. Simply click on the link to access the most current information!

Head Lice Education Reminder

Page 12

Knights Knotes Volume 14, Issue 1

FACTS: x Head lice crawl from child to child through head to head contact.

x Lice cannot hop, jump or fly.

x ANY child can get head lice. Lice can live up to 30 days on a person’s head and lay from 50 to 150 eggs. If the louse falls off a person, it dies within 2 days.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR: x Lice are small brown, tan or gray insects, about the size of a sesame seed.

x The nits or egg sacks are opaque, white oblong-shaped sacks which are firmly attached to the hair shaft. Nits cannot be brushed out. They can only be manually removed with a nit comb or pulled out by fingertips.

x Suspect lice if your child scratches and/or complains of an itchy head. Itching is the first sign of head lice. Check the hair and scalp very carefully, especially behind the ears and near the neckline. The best method is to use a magnifying glass under a bright light.

HOW TO TREAT IF INFECTED: x Wash your child’s hair with an FDA product formulated to kill lice.

x Have your child sit under a bright light and remove all nits with a metal comb that is designed to remove nits. Remove remaining nits with your fingers. Failure to do this important step always results in reoccurrence. x Nits are not killed by lice shampoos, so it is necessary to wash the hair with the lice product a second time in 7 to 10 days to kill any newly hatched lice.

x Launder all clothing and bedding. Laundry water should be at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit to kill the lice. Dry on highest heat setting.

x Vacuum all carpets, upholstery and mattresses in the house. Throw away the vacuum bag.

x Seal clothing, stuffed toys, pillows, blankets or other small soft items, for two weeks in tightly closed plastic bags will kill both lice and nits. Dry cleaning also kills lice. Soak combs, brushes and other washable items for one hour in one of the approved lice shampoos; or, soak them for 5 to 10 minutes in a pan of 130 degree hot water.

PROACTIVE MEASURES x Teach your whole family about how lice are spread and treated.

x Teach your children not to share combs, brushes, hats, hair accessories, jackets and other personal items with other children.

x Check your child frequently for signs of lice or nits. If you have treated your child for lice, they must be screened by the school nurse prior to returning to school. RECOURCES: www.dshs.state.tx.us/schoolhealth/lice.shtm
