School Absences

Kathryn Stone, Registrar/Attendance Clerk

On the day a student is absent, the parent/guardian should call the school and report the absence before 9:00 AM. Upon returning to school, the student must bring a note, signed by the parent/guardian with a brief description for the absence and the date(s) of the absence. Faxed notes may be accepted if they contain all required information including the parent/guardian signature. Emails may be used for notification to your child’s teacher, but cannot be accepted as an excuse. Please remember to cc our Attendance Clerk, [email protected]. An attachment to an email containing the parent/guardian signature will be accepted. After 3 school days the absence will be considered unexcused if a note has not been received by the school office. A doctor’s note is required if your child is absent in excess of 5 school days. Please refer to the 2015-2016 Allen ISD Student Handbook for more information regarding attendance. Thank you!

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Tara Glotzbach, Volunteer Coordinator

Norton is in need of volunteers for many programs throughout the year. We

know your time is valuable, but every little bit helps to make Norton the best

it can be. We are in need of a few people to help with changing the

marquee sign, making birthday bulletin boards, helping copy materials for

the classrooms, and counting items to be placed in the Wednesday

folders. We also need additional library volunteers. Helping in the library is

a great way to see what is most popular in children's literature and gather

reading ideas for your children. Library volunteers give our wonderful

librarian Mrs. Benton valuable time to design and teach lessons about

finding, evaluating, and using information. These are life-long skills all of our

kids need. Any time you can volunteer is considered valuable and is

greatly appreciated. You can find a complete list of Volunteer

opportunities and sign-up here.

AISD requires all volunteers to apply and complete a Criminal Background

check on a yearly basis. So even if you applied last year, it is time to update

your application. Please click on the following link to complete your

volunteer application. Human Resources / Register to Be a Volunteer.

Contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Tara Glotzbach,

at [email protected] or 214-547-9539 with any questions regarding

volunteer opportunities.

Please help support your Norton Elementary PTA - DONATE TODAY!

The Norton PTA Back to Basics Fundraiser is in full swing! We still have a long way to go as we are

currently only at 40% of our monetary goal. The funds raised will help support programs for Norton

families, students and teachers throughout the year and will help buy equipment that our students use at

school. We are aspiring to have 100% participation by our families. Prizes will be awarded to those that

donate $50 or above, but remember we will accept any amount, no matter how small or large.

There are no other big fundraisers throughout the year, and this one has been made simple with no selling,

no volunteering, and no soliciting sponsorships. Simply write a check or donate with credit card online. If

we meet our goal, Mrs. DeLeon has agreed to let the students design and build her a wacky obstacle

course. The top two winning classes will receive student prizes and the teachers will get $50 for classroom

supplies. To find out more or donate today, please visit

http://www.allenisd.org//site/Default.aspx?PageID=30151. Thank you for your support!

Don't Forget to Link Your Grocery Cards and Amazon Account When you link your Tom Thumb and Kroger cards to Norton PTA, they will donate back a percentage of

sales, and these funds are used to help provide Norton programs. In addition, if you shop at Amazon, you

can participate in their Amazon Smile program which will also donate back a percentage of sales if you

select Norton PTA as your charity of choice. To find out how to link your cards and to participate in

Amazon Smile, please visit http://www.allenisd.org/Page/4259.

HEAD LICE EDUCATION

FACTS:

Head lice crawl from child to child through head to head contact.

Lice cannot hop, jump or fly.

ANY child can get head lice.

Lice can live up to 30 days on a person’s head and lay from 50 to 150 eggs. If the louse falls off a person, it dies within 2 days.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR:

Lice are small brown, tan or gray insects, about the size of a sesame seed.

The nits or egg sacks are opaque, white oblong-shaped sacks which are firmly attached to the hair shaft. These nits cannot be brushed out. They can only be manually removed with a nit comb or pulled out by hand.

Suspect lice if your child scratches and/or complains of an itchy head. Itching is the first sign of head lice.

HOW TO TREAT IF INFECTED:

Wash your child’s hair with an FDA product formulated to kill lice.

Have your child sit under a bright light and remove all nits with a metal comb that is designed to remove nits. Remove remaining nits with your fingers. Failure to do this important step always results in reoccurrence.

Nits are not killed by lice shampoos, so it will be necessary to wash the hair with the lice product a second time in 7 to 10 days to kill any newly hatched lice.

Launder all clothing and bedding. Laundry water should be at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit to kill the lice. Dry on highest heat setting.

Vacuum all carpets, upholstery and mattresses in the house. Throw away the vacuum bag.

Sealing clothing, stuffed toys, pillows, blankets or other small soft items, for two weeks in tightly closed plastic bags will kill both lice and nits. Dry cleaning will also kill lice.

Soak combs, brushes and other washable items for one hour in one of the approved lice shampoos; or, soak them for 5 to 10 minutes in a pan of 130 degree hot water.

PROACTIVE MEASURES

Teach your whole family about how lice is spread and treated.

Teach your children not to share combs, brushes, hats, hair accessories, jackets and other personal items with other children.

Check your child frequently for signs of lice or nits. RESOURCES:

5 Tips for packing a nutritious lunch: 1) Let your children help – they are more likely to eat it if they helped

select it and/or make it. 2) Make subtle switches – Try using yogurt or low fat sour cream as a dip

instead of ranch

3) Make your own versions of processed snacks – Creating homemade versions of Lunchables is easy using things like whole-grain crackers or

pitas with lean meat and low-fat cheese with fresh fruit substituting for

the candy found in store-bought versions 4) Make healthy foods fun to eat – Cookie cutters make easy work out of

making things like lean lunch meat or cheese into fun shapes and the kids

can help cut them out. 5) Variety is the spice of life –It can be easy to get in the routine of putting

only their favorite foods in their lunch box, but trying new things can

reveal new favorites and different options for lunch. Tara Ellwanger is the Healthy Lifestyles Chair for Norton. If you would like

School Counselor – Michelle Gilbert

Welcome to a new school year here at Norton Elementary! We have

some exciting programs that will be taking place in the next few weeks! Our students will be participating in an assembly on

September 11th by the Think Kindness organization. Our PTA is generously providing this assembly and it’s to help create an environment of

kindness and compassion for the whole school year. The students will be asked

to journal their acts of kindness over a period of fifteen days and will hear how one small act of kindness CAN change the world. I think it will be a very

impressionable assembly for our students! In October, the High Flying Excitement assembly will take place during Red Ribbon week. Two off duty

Plano police officers wow the students with their trampoline and martial arts

skills while emphasizing making good choices and being drug free. This assembly has been very popular with our students and is also provided by the

PTA. In November, the students and parents will be asked to donate canned goods for needy families during our “Traveling Turkey” donation week. Norton

Elementary families are the most generous and giving families! Thank you for

all your support!

I also would like to introduce the sixth grade Leadership Team for 2015-2016. They will be helping scatter kindness and compassion throughout the

school through various service activities. These sixth graders are: Nicole Bain, Alex Bull, Dylan Carlquist, Ella Christensen, Evyn Gadd, Julia Gilbert, Katie

McDonald, Meghna Paul, and Emma Watkins. I’m very excited to be working

with such a wonderful group of students!
