OH NO! IS IT THE FLU?

The flu (influenza) is an infection of the nose, throat, and lungs that is caused by the influenza virus, and it is different from colds and allergies.

Symptoms: feeling tired, fever (greater than 100 F), headache, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and sore muscles. Children may also experience stomach problems and diarrhea. Cough can last two weeks or more. (People with the flu will spread the infection when they cough, sneeze and have a runny nose.) It is very important to cover your mouth with your elbow when you sneeze or cough to prevent spreading germs. People become sick when they come in contact with the infection (flu germs).

Prevention: Stay home when you are sick. Stay home from work, school, and errands when you are sick. You will help prevent others from catching your illness.

Cover your mouth and nose. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing, or cough into the crook of your elbow. Wash your hands immediately if you inadvertently use your hand to cover your mouth.

Clean your hands. Wash your hands often with soap and water. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water is not available.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.

Treatment: If your child has flu symptoms, please keep him/her home and consult your doctor. It is important for your child to drink plenty of fluids and get as much rest as possible. If your child has a temperature of 100 or greater, they cannot attend school per AISD policy. Students must be free of fever for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication) before returning to school. Keeping your child home and allowing plenty of rest will ensure a faster recovery for your child and prevent the spread of the infection to others.

Celebrate Calm Take THIS QUIZ. Does your child: 1. Push your buttons and argue like an attorney? 2. Create power struggles over EVERYTHING? 3. Melt down over little changes, disappointments, and transitions? 4. Control others, act bossy, and enforce ‘fairness?’ 5. Struggle with being disorganized, forgetful, and impulsive? 6. Relate well to adults and younger children, but struggle with peers? 7. Appear unmotivated and underperform academically? If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, Celebrate Calm can help. Your PTA is inviting you to attend two FREE dynamic, laugh-out-loud, and funny parenting workshops with Kirk Martin of Celebrate Calm. Attention Parents of Current 6th Graders

Now that we are beginning the 2nd semester, Nurse Cindy wants to be proactive in helping your 6th grader be prepared for 7th grade enrollment, as this process will begin quicker than we think! Please pay close attention to the information below regarding vaccine requirements: All incoming 7th grade students are required to have the following immunizations prior to starting the first day of 7th grade: --Tetanus/Diphtheria/Acellular Pertussis (Tdap) --Meningococcal (Must be identified as MCV4, Menactra, Menveo, or MenACWV.) *Must be given on or after the 11th birthday* If your student has had these immunizations, please turn in the paperwork to the Norton school nurse. It will make the transition and registration process for Middle School much easier. Individual notices will be sent out to students who are in need of these vaccines or proof of the vac-cines. There will be 4 notices--one in February, March, April, and May--reminding those students who need to turn in proof of the above vaccines. If you do not receive a notice, your student’s vaccines are current for 7th grade entry and no action is required.

Allen Eagle Run - Saturday, February 25th, 2017 Families can enjoy the Fun Run/Walk or a 5K Run, and afterwards enjoy the festival-like sponsor area with samples and activities. Now in our 9th year, the Eagle Run is expected to host a crowd of over 3,000 participants at Eagle Stadium! The start/finish and all activities will be held outside Eagle Stadium in the East (visitor) parking lot. Early online registration (http://www.alleneaglerun.org/) is now open! All registered runners will receive a blue t-shirt with the Allen Eagle Run logo printed on the front. After February 3rd, sizes may be limited, so sign-up early! $20 Online until midnight February 3rd (3 MORE DAYS!!) (LAST DAY FOR PAPER REGISTRATION FORMS from Wednesday folders) $25 Online from February 4th through February 23rd (closes at midnight on February 23rd) $30 Race Day (starting at 7 am at Registration Booth) We also offer a Sleep-in option for the Run. Sleep-in registration allows individuals to donate to the Foundation For Allen Schools WITHOUT HAVING TO WAKE UP EARLY and participate in the Allen Eagle Run. The really cool part is that you get the t-shirt and the goody bag just like the rest of the participants. This is a great way to help Norton meet our goal of 160 participants. When we hit our goal, Mrs. DeLeon gets duct taped to a cafeteria table, and all Norton classes get to have lunch outside on a lovely day later this Spring. Cash, check, Visa, Mastercard, and Discover accepted. Entry fees are non-refundable, including in the event of inclement weather -- your entry fee will be considered a donation to the Foundation.
