County Eye's Payment for County Board by Sheryl Krase

With the past election many sit-ting county board members were shown the door by the voters usher-ing in a new era here in county gov-ernment. The pledge by the newly nominated candidates and current county board members is message received. With funding issues across the board the Kendall County Board is making steps to clarify how board members are to be compensated for their service to the County. At issue is the per diem program in which under the current system mileage and 85.00 payments is paid to each county board member. In the past few Months County Fiancé chair-man Anne Vickery has off ered sug-gestions as a way to begin to clarify the current system.

Some suggestions un-der consideration Paying mileage to the county board members begin from the county build-ing and ending at their destination. Raising the per Diem of the meeting to 90 a day Having county Board members pay for their own Health CareWorking with Department Heads and Treasure’s offi ce to streamline process!

No Doubt that as we move forward to the election this will continue to

be an issue the residents of Kendall County will be looking at. In an era of economic Slowdown county residents

Salute To Vets By the Kendall Vet

Richard Lee Sung, one of the more notable actors of the hit TV show M*A*S*H* recently stated that “Americans are probably more fa-miliar with the work he and his fellow actors did on the Korean War-based TV show “M*A*S*H” than with the sacrifi ces he and his fellow U.S. ser-vicemen made fi ghting the war itself. And that must change.”

I could not agree more.

Even more disturbing than that, is the other handful of countries that the U.S. has had armed confl ict in that most people have forgotten about. Countries such as; Vietnam, Korea, Cuba, Cambodia, El Salvi-dor, Libya, Lebanon, Grenada, Pan-ama, Iraqi/Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Bosnia, and the current Iraq, and Afghanistan, have all had confl ict and many losses of life. It’s sad and disturbing to know that half of the U.S. doesn’t even know or care that our military has fought and died in so many countries around the world. This memorial day I am asking you all to take time and explain to your children that Memorial day is not just a day off of school, not a day off of work, not just a day to grill out and party but a day of remembrance, a day of thanks to the men and women who have fought and paid the ulti-mate sacrifi ce for this country so that

we may live as we do in this country. "Those who cannot remember the

past are condemned to repeat it." (George Santayana)

I would like to introduce you all to the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors also known as TAPS. This

not for profi t company is making a world of diff erence for many surviv-ing family members that have lost someone in the US Armed forces. This memorial day TAPS is inviting over 474 children of deceased ser-vice members to Camp Good Greif and Honoring Hero Camp in Wash-ington, DC for their 18th annual TAPS National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp for Young Survivors. There the children will be paired with any number of volunteers that have taken time out of their life, and money out of their pocket to give back a small token of gratitude and help the healing pro-cess that one goes through after such a loss. Mentors will be providing a ”safe and supportive atmosphere to conduct activities and opportunities to learn coping skills, establish and identify support systems and create awareness that they are not alone in the grief of their loved one.” They will then be accompanying them around our national mall showing them that the US honors their de-ceased loved ones and will be ending the day with dinner and party at the local DC National Guard Armory. Now while I do realize that this is a little dated as Memorial Day is just around the corner I encourage you all to head over to the TAPS website (http://www.taps.org/) and view the great work they are doing to sup-port our fallen heroes. Also Please be sure to keep this in mind for next memorial day 2013 and volunteer

This Old Home Inspection for the

buyer Part 2 Roofi ng Starting at the top the roof is one of the most critical areas of the home, If your roof is in poor shape It will

not shed water as Intended, resulting in leaks from the roof to the foun-dation. The critical areas of the roof should be thorough-ly Inspected, If the roof is too high for easy access, then use binoculars. Starting with the south side analyze the condition of the roofi ng surface fi rst look at the ridge for any sag-ging of the roof structure, then move on to the roof penetrations like roof vents and the plumbing stack, next you want to look at the fl ashings any valleys and walls that meet the roof-line and the chimney should have ex-tensive step fl ashing and if chimney is located were water will run down the roof towards it there needs to be a cricket at the back, this is a small pitch that helps divert water around the chimney and since you are look-ing this is a good time to Inspect It as well, look at where it meets the house is it pulling away ? are there cracked bricks and missing mortar, don’t forget to Inspect the Crown (top) of the chimney for cracks or damage also is there a cap this will keep animals out and help keep water from running down the fl ue.

Next take note of what type of roofi ng material is on the home most homes in the area have asphalt shingles but there are many other kinds like wood shingles slate and metal, each of these has diff erent life span and indicators of what kind of condition there in. Asphalt shingles typically last 20 to 30 years and the condition is easy to see look for cupping/curled or torn shingles and missing gravel coating. Wood shingles have an estimated life span of 30 to 40 years, look for loose missing or damaged shingles and re-place when necessary.

Metal roofs have a life span of 50 years and are easy to see the diff er-ence between an old rusty cracked and pitted roof and a nice newer roof. Slate has a life span of 50 to 100 years depending on the grade de-terioration is more subtle, fl ak-ing and white stains are to signs the roof is getting on in years. Next week’s column we will

Part 4 of “7 Deadly Finan-cial Sins”: The Infamous Sloth Synonyms for Sloth: do-nothingness, lethargy, laziness, apathy, slowness, inactivity, etc.

My synonym for Sloth: Procrastinator.

So, you have the desire and the means to save and invest for a bet-ter future, but you simply have not gotten around to it. Perhaps you’re afraid of looking at your current fi-nancial condition. Or maybe you’re unsure of where to begin. Or you could be certain that there’s always time to take care of that “financial stuff”, so what’s the big rush?

Develop Urgency. You could be suf-fering from Purchasing Power Risk!

People who suffer from Purchas-ing Power Risk rob themselves of

investment opportunities by stay-ing in cash or low interest-bearing investments. According to Trading Economics, the average inflation rate over the last 95 years is 3.38%*; if your investable assets are not at-tempting to achieve returns equal to or above the average inflation, then in terms of purchasing power you are actually losing money.

Start at the Be-ginning. Get a clear Financial Picture.

A holistic finan-cial plan can be intimidating, but recognize that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Seek help from a financial profes-sional in order to distinguish a necessary emer-gency fund, ad-equate cash flow for your present needs & wants, and required return per your risk tolerance to accomplish fu-ture goals & dreams.

“Procrastination is opportunity's as-sassin.” - Victor Kiam

The longer you wait, the more you could lose. Overcome your excuses and choose to start saving & invest-ing today. Be the dictator of your fi-nances, otherwise your finances will dictate you.

The Sad State of our State by Roger Sheeman

With the enormous amount of debt the state has Democrats who are hardly willing to cut any state pro-grams enough to cut the defi cit are now back to raising the so called “sin taxes”. They are out of ideas, after raising the state income tax. They are now proposing another $1 a pack tax increase on cigarettes. It’s a fact more minorities smoke more than Caucasians which would severely hurt those low income earners. This is not a tax on the rich it’s a tax on the poor.

They are also proposing a tax on strip clubs. In other words whenever someone would enter a strip club

they would pay a tax on top of a cov-er charge in the area of $3 to $5. This tax will bring in an estimated $1 mil-lion dollars not to reduce the defi cit, but to fund rape crisis centers.

The Democrats have also proposed allowing igaming, (gambling on line) in the state which they say could generate hundreds of millions of dollars. How could they prevent someone underage gambling on line? igaming could run the casinos out of business and lose thousands of jobs. The State House passed a massive gambling bill on Wednesday that adds 5 new casinos, including one for Chicago and allows for slot ma-chines at the race tracks. Lose your money twice as fast.

The legislature did pass a bill re-quiring some of the 78,000 current retired state employees who pay nothing for their health plan to pay some based on their length of service and their ability to pay. What these limits are is unclear at this time. The Democrats in the State Senate have proposed a budget that $600 million more than the House budget. The Democrat plan spends more than the projected revenue of $33.7 billion.Governor Quinn has proposed taking about $250 million dollars from the IDOT road fun to pay for IDOT’s health-care, workers compensation, building rent and maintenance costs. This will leave the state with about 5,000 miles of roads by 2018 that are deemed unacceptable. You thought the roads were bad now just wait.

With the state’s current unemploy-ment at 8.9% a Senate committee approved a bill to raise the minimum wage to more than $10 an hour. How much will Happy Meals be if this is put into law? This will negatively af-fect teen age employment which has sky rocketed during the current eco-nomic turndown. We have chased so much business out of the state so it looks like fast food places are next on the list. So long Golden Arches, The King and Wendy.

There also is a plan to implement Obamacare 2 years earlier which

could add 800,000 more people to Medicaid. They believe the state would receive a bigger chunk of funds to help pay for Medicaid. Just what we need Obamacare sooner than later. Let’s hope the Supreme Court takes care of that sometime this coming month. How sad is it that the very things that have chased jobs from Illinois, high taxes and high labor costs are exactly what the Democrats are proposing more of. How sad is our state. Sad very sad.

Speaking of Politics By Herman Johnson

Not everyone in the media (even the good guys) can adequately inform the general public correctly about politi-cal behavior in the United States. If you have noticed most of our com-mentators and their analysts are not political scientists or students of gov-ernment, and many are not journal-ists at all. Therefore, much that is in the media are of those who speak in generalities according to their own prejudices and discrimination. Ask, if possible, those who say that it is ob-vious President Barack Obama can-not run for re-election on his record whether or not they have any type of college degree, post graduate degree, or equivalent to that of Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. In other words, where and how do the critics research the evidence to make any comments at all. Surely, the critics must know that President Barack Obama must have done something great for the entire World in order to have received the Nobel Peace Prize The President's critics must know that Ivy Universities in the United States specialize in qualifying lead-ers to lead these United States (from the Nation's Capitol to the smallest Precinct). For the record, President Obama ran on the Poli-tics of Change and what is obvious (if anything is obvious) is that there are some of those among the status-quo who are determined to prevent

change from happening. Specifi -cally, those who control and lead the Republican Party (who pledged from the day of his inauguration to make him a one term President), the Tea Party, and voters who support these people yet have suff ered under their policies, have united against the President from day one. However, the more the right people speak out for truth, the better the nation will be, and President will get the respect he deserves. He defi nitely deserves a second term to complete that which he has started. For those of you who know the evolution of these days, I submit the following quotes: #1 "In Germany, they came fi rst for the Communists, and I didn't speak

up because I wasn't Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up be-cause I wasn't a trade unionists. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up." Martin Niemoeller #2 "You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time." Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), (attributed)

Health and Fitness By Mavis Bates

What does it take to make a person feel really great? First, you need to be free from pain. Second, you need to be able to handle stress. Third, you need to be free of chronic illness. And fourth, you need to have energy and sleep well.

You cannot have a good quality of life if you are constantly troubled with aches and pains. You can’t go out and do the things you like to do, even if it’s just going shopping, if your pain holds you back. Acupunc-ture is famous for helping alleviate pain, and in some studies it was bet-ter than pain medication. It doesn’t have the dangerous side eff ects, such as liver damage, that can happen with medication.

You need to be able to handle the stresses of daily life with a sense of calmness and strength. If you are fi lled with anxiety or depression your life will be like hell, not like heaven. Acupuncture increases endorphins in your body, neurotransmitters that help to reduce pain and increase your sense of well-being. Chinese herbs also help to “calm the spirit”, to calm your worries and lift your spirits.

Then you need to fi x what’s not right with your health. Any chronic ill-nesses need to be fi xed up, like aller-gies, stomach aches, ear aches. Acu-puncture can often help with these,

too. Allergies usually respond very quickly to acupuncture.

Then things that make you feel really great are more energy, better sleep,

and boosting your immune system to make you feel really great. In one study, energy increased by 40% with acupuncture, enough to help you get out of the house, make it through a

workday without too much fatigue, and still have enough energy to play with your kids when you get home. Acupuncture makes white blood cells work better to kill off germs be-fore they can make you sick.

Have you tried acupuncture? It may just be time for you to see it could make you “Feel Really Great!”

Job Hunting Tips Tips from Linked in

1. Make time It’s easy to let job hunting fall to the bottom of your to-do list, but you can’t afford to let that happen. Schedule at least 15 minutes a day in your calen-dar to work on your resume, update and check online net-working profiles and search job listings. Opportunities come and go quickly, so you need to be in the game on a daily basis.

2. Get noticed What better way to impress a re-cruiter than to have a profes-sional networking profile ap-pear as the first search result for your name? Completing your LinkedIn profile to 100% with your education, experience, recommendations and group memberships will increase your search ranking and give em-ployers a strong impression be-fore you ever meet in person. 3. Be keyword savvy Make sure your profile is

chock-full of keywords that will attract a recruiter’s attention. Look through job postings and LinkedIn profiles that appeal to you and incorporate some of the same words or phrases. In addition to job- and industryspecific words, recruit-ers also love leadership terms (cap-tain, president) and action words (managed, designed).

4. Reach out Connect on LinkedIn with everyone you know -- friends, family, neighbors, professors, family friends, internship colleagues and others. Once you’re connected, send each person a friendly message on LinkedIn, asking if they would keep an eye out for the particular kind of job or jobs you’re seeking or if they can introduce you to other helpful contacts.

5. Spread the word To build your credibility and stay on people’s radar screens dur-ing your job hunt, regularly up-date your status on LinkedIn and other social networks. You might share links to arti-cles you think would be relevant to people in your field (to show you are up on the news), an-nouncements about events you’re attending (to show that

you are actively networking) and good career news (to show that you’re headed for success). Just re-member to keep your updates clean and appropriate.

6. Get into groups Beyond connecting to individu-als, join LinkedIn groups re-lated to your alma mater, pro-fessional associations, volunteer organizations and industries you want to join. Every discus-sion in which you comment is an opportunity to market yourself to people who might be hiring, and every group contains a “Jobs” tab where members post opportunities to one another.

7. Search high and low What makes LinkedIn’s job post-ings different from others is that they don’t just tell you who is hiring, they tell you how you are personally connected to that company through your net-work. Even when you see a job listed on another site, LinkedIn can help you research people at that company and tell you how you are personally connect-ed through your network. No matter where you look for jobs, cast a wider net by altering your search terms and location criteria from time to time.

8. Follow companies When you see a job you like on another job board, use Linked-In as a company research tool. Check out the LinkedIn Company Page of any organi-zation where you’d like to work and click “Follow company.” Ac-tivities of that organization on LinkedIn (job postings, hires, announcements) will appear on your homepage and alert you to potential opportunities. 9. Persist (without pestering) While you don’t want to be a pest, persistence is a very important com-ponent of the job search process. Sending followup messages through LinkedIn can help you stand out from other candidates. Every time

you send someone a message through LinkedIn, the recruit-er or hiring manager can eas-ily click over to your profile and check out your credentials 10. Consider Job Seeker Premium Once you have a strong Linked-In profile, you want to make sure it gets to the top of recruit-ers’ inboxes when you apply for jobs. LinkedIn offers an upgrade feature called Job Seeker Pre-mium that, among other ben-efits, places your profile at the top of the list of applicants to the jobs you apply for on Linked-In. Premium subscribers are twice as likely to be contacted by recruiters and 80% more likely to be found in search. Check it out at http://www.linkedin.com/jobseeker.

Seeking Breafeast Topics Seeking Breakfast Topics The Business Climate Enhancement committee would like your input. Is there a specific topic that would help you and your business pros-per and grow? Perhaps you have a product or service you would like to share with the business community. Several times throughout the year, this committee holds a breakfast meeting where a speaker or panel of speakers are brought in to help edu-cate our business leaders. Our goal is to ensure that the topics are inform-ative and beneficial to the business community. It also provides a great networking opportunity. Over the next year, the BCEC will be discuss-ing the Orchard Road opportunities, if this is something of interest to you. Please email or call the MEDC of-fice and let us know if other topics may be of interest to you so we can start planning our next breakfast event please call 630-897-6748
