Networking Tips That Won't Blow Your Cover By Caroline M.L. Potter

If you've got a job, you probably want to hold on to it until you find anoth-er one, even if it's less than ideal. But remember, in most states, employ-ment is at-will, meaning you can be fired for almost any reason (so long as it is not discriminatory) -- includ-ing looking for a new position.

So how can a job seeker tap the full power of her network without blow-ing her cover with her boss? Use


these tips from national workplace columnist and career advisor Liz Ryan to keep your job search under wraps.

Do:

Tell Your People -- in Person: Ryan says your network is your best re-source for finding new opportuni-ties, but use it with caution. "Be-cause even our most well-meaning friends can inadvertently spill the beans in unfortunate ways, it's best to share this news in person, while you're looking in someone's eyes," she says. This will allow you to stress how important discretion is. Mix and Mingle: Start going to face-to-face networking events to expand your network. To keep things discrete, Ryan advises, "Don't announce, 'I'm job hunting.' In-stead, tell other attendees, 'I work for XYZ Company doing A, B and C. Of course, like everyone else, I've got my eyes open right now.'" Build Your Profile to Raise Your Pro-file: Network from the comfort of your own home by creating or expanding your BeKnown and LinkedIn pro-files. "Build your [professional net-working profiles] and network by in-viting friends and colleagues -- all but the people you work with right now -- to join your network," Ryan says. Tap Your Resources When Do-ing Research: When thinking about where you want to work next, Ryan says look first to your network. "Be-gin to research employers and reach out to them through trusted friends and colleagues who either work there now, used to work there or know people who can make intro-ductions to the employer for you." Expand Your Network and Knowl-edge Online: Another way to build your network is to participate in online discussion groups. "Look for groups devoted to job search and career topics to grow your knowl-edge base and contacts," Ryan says. Don't:

Broadcast Your Intentions: Ryan strongly advises job seekers to avoid any means of broadcast communica-tions. "If you use a LinkedIn broad-cast message or a group email to tell friends you're job hunting, there's an excellent chance that someone will not read it carefully and inad-vertently tip your hand to the wrong people," she says. She also reminds folks with a vested interest in secre-cy not to list their job hunting sta-tus on any social-networking sites. Find Out How You'll Fare at a Job Fair: Job fairs are attracting record numbers of attendees. If you are among them, there's a strong pos-sibility you could run into someone who knows both you and your cur-rent employer, creating an awkward situation that could cost you your job. Therefore, says Ryan, "Avoid attending job fairs as a method to meet prospective employers." Count on Coworkers: Keep your search a secret from even your most trusted colleagues. "Asking cur-rent coworkers for help or advice with your job search puts them in a bad situation, torn between loyalty to you and their paycheck," Ryan says. "Don't ask them to do that." Blindly Respond to Blind Ads: Em-ployers often use blind advertise-ments to attempt to find a replace-ment for a current employee who does not yet know he is about to be fired. Responding to one, then, puts you in jeopardy of applying to the very company for which you work (per-haps even for your very job). Even if it isn't the same position or a lateral one, Ryan says, "Don't send your re-sume to any blind job ads in which the employer is not clearly identified." Give Out References at Your Cur-rent Company: It's hard to get a job without references. In fact, solid references are often what seals the deal. However, you shouldn't use your current team members or su-pervisors as references. "You'll use these folks as reference-givers down the road, but while you're still work-ing at XYZ Corp., it's not ethical or

appropriate to ask XYZ-affiliated people to recommend you for a dif-ferent job," Ryan says.

Alan K. Simpson once said, “There is no ‘slippery slope’ toward loss of liberty, only a long staircase where each step down must first be tolerat-ed by the American people and their leaders.”. One person and one act can rob the rights of many others.

Take, for example, the recent fall-out from a Falmouth, Massachusetts town meeting where Melissa Fre-itag (filling in for the Board Presi-dent that evening) chose to read a poem before the meeting began and forego the Pledge of Allegiance. With that simple act, she took away the rights of every individual in that room. And, considering that the town had officially made it part of their meeting rules over two years ago, it’s actually stunning that one person can simply choose not to obey the rules. That’s how it begins.

When Fox News asked several resi-dents what they thought about it, you got two very different opin-ions. One gentleman voiced the concern that it’s a slippery slope when we begin removing symbols of our democracy. Another lady responded that there were more important things to worry about. I agree, the more important thing to worry about is how does one per-son come to power who can remove the rights and wishes of the larger majority? Some might say, it’s just the Pledge…..not a big deal. We’ve got the economy to worry about, and healthcare, and a litany of oth-er pressing issues. What difference does it make it you stand and honor a flag with a few simple words?

Well, pose that question to the thousands of individuals, parents, spouses, loved ones and friends of the troops who have gone to fight defending what that flag stands for?

Ask that question of a Gold Star par-ent whose child died defending that red, white and blue symbol of free-dom around the world? Ask that of a veteran who has given up part of his life to serve his country. Ask a child who hasn’t seen their parent in over a year, who goes to bed every night without a goodnight kiss or hear-ing “I love you” from their parent. And, by all means, go and ask that

of a hero missing an arm, a leg, their sight, or their sanity for that “not so important” symbol!

And so, the next time you think that saying the Pledge of Allegiance means nothing, try to remember the price of freedom. Remember that for many of us we’ve never had to pay anything. It’s been given to us as a gift by those who have sacrificed so much, and the very least we can do to say I’m proud and grateful, is to stand, put our hand over our heart and say the Pledge of Allegiance.

I always have…..and by God, I always will. No one person will ever take that right from me. Rights can only be stolen by those who would allow it.

Robert “Bob” Mitchler died Thurs-day, April 19 in his rural Oswego home. He was 91. Managing Editor Jennifer Rice fondly remembers the former Illinois State Senator for his sense of humor, his kindness and his steadfast devotion to helping people.

Bob Mitchler was a people person. He loved working with people, vet-eran organizations and schools. He truly was a Renaissance man.

I fi rst crossed paths with Mitchler in 2010. I was to spend a few hours with the then 89-year-old veteran, summing up his life for a feature sto-ry. In the end, I spent two days with him — an excessive amount of time for a story.

On the fi rst day, we talked for so many hours, the sun had disap-peared, making the possibility of outdoor pictures impossible. I would have to come back.

“Why don’t you come back tomor-row?” Mitchler asked. “At lunch-time. We’ll have lunch together.” It was more of a statement, than a question.

And that’s what I did. After lunch, we moved outside. A few days prior, a storm had blown through Ken-dall County, snapping several tree branches and scattering dead twigs and limbs in his yard.

Before I know it, I’m riding shotgun in his John Deere Gator 6x4 vehi-cle, zipping all over his yard, Mitch-ler talking my ear off . He suddenly hits the brakes and points to a pile of twigs. “Why don’t you throw them in the back?” I do as he says.



A few feet further, he stops again. “Why don’t you throw them in the back?” Again, I do as he says. Sud-denly, I begin to see a pattern. I no-tice several piles of twigs. I realize I was here to help him pick them up. And I didn’t mind at all.

Listening to Mitchler speak was a re-porter’s dream — he never stopped talking. He was so knowledgably, on everything. He had the best stories.

He recounted his time running for state senator, how he loved to cam-paign — “nice, clean campaigning, no mudslinging. We campaigned on issues and platforms,” he remem-bered. Something they don’t do to-day, he remarked.

“Never get into a squirting contest with a skunk,” he told me, shaking his fi nger to the air for emphasis. “If you’re a public fi gure, you never get into an argument — even if you’re opponent’s wrong. Because the skunk will win, and you’ve got that splattered all over you, and you’ve got to live with it,” he said.

He had a political career he was very proud of. Over the year, he said poli-tics changed. The General Assembly changed. “Today, I couldn’t stand doing what they’re doing down in Springfi eld.”

He served in both WWII and Korea. He was 21 when he enlisted in the Navy, just before Pearl Harbor. In September 1950, three months after marrying Helen, he was called to ac-tive duty when North Korea invaded South Korea.

For Veterans Day, he’d talk to stu-dents. He wanted to stress to them to talk to their grandparents; ask them about their role in the war. Just

thinking about the question made Mitchler get tears in his eyes. “I’d tell those young students, ‘Around the holidays, take your grandfather aside. Ask him, ‘Will you tell me what you did in the military?’”

He told me several times he’s real-ly had a wonderful life, a good life. That summer and the next, he asked me to canoe alongside him during the Mid-American Canoe Race on the Fox River. That fi rst summer, I tipped my canoe — twice. Before I knew it, Mitchler was long gone.

After the race, he held a 90th birth-day party for himself at his house. That’s where I fi nally met up with him; smelling like river water, dirty with dried mud on my legs and a few bruises to boot.

“Well,” he said. “Maybe when you’re 90, you’ll be able to catch up to me,” which drew laughs from most of the partygoers.

I’m glad I had the honor and ex-perience to know Mitchler. To know him is to love him. I consider him a friend and I’m sad that he’s gone. To the sea his spirit is now.

Sheila Simon Inspires and Enter-tains Democratic Supporters

Following introductions by Na-perville resident, Nancy Chen, who once managed her Senator Si-mon’s offi ce in Chicago and Dianne McGuire, Chairwoman of the Na-perville Township Democratic Or-ganization, Sheila Simon, the fi rst woman to ever hold the offi ce of Lieutenant Governor in the State of Illinois, inspired, enlightened, and entertained one hundred plus at-tendees at the NTDO annual fund-raiser held on April 26th at the Black Finn American Saloon in down-town Naperville. In her remarks, Ms. Simon highlighted several of the more noteworthy accomplish-ments of the current administration.Mentioned fi rst was the passage of the civil union legislation in January of 2011, making Illinois the 7th state, along with the District of Columbia, to give same sex couples signifi cant legal rights. In addition to civil un-ion legislation, this administration joined fi fteen other states in abol-ishing the death penalty in Illinois. Governor Quinn spent two months listening to the voices on both sides of this issue before signing the legis-lation in March of 2011. The Lieu-tenant Governor, a former southern Illinois prosecutor, encouraged the Governor to sign the legislation. The last accomplishment she mentioned centered on the passage of Senate Bill 7 which addressed education re-form measures. She highlighted the collaborative nature of the process

undertaken to address areas of con-cern. Ms. Simon, a professor at SIU-Carbondale, is the Governor’s “point person” for education issues and has recently completed visits to all forty-eight community colleges across the state. She has worked with legislators to introduce legisla-tion which will help more students complete their college work on time and with less debt. She also serves as Chair of the P-20 Joint Education Leadership Council for the State of Illinois whose purpose is to make sure there is a seamless transition from pre-school to grad school to the workforce.

As with all of the constitutional of-fi cers, Ms. Simon has an offi ce in Springfi eld at the Capitol, another offi ce at the Thompson Center in Chicago, and one in Carbondale, her home city. She described the beauty of her offi ce at the Capitol, the sleek styling of the offi ces in Chicago, and the two rooms in an IDOT building in Carbondale…with the sign on the entrance to the building encouraging visitors to scrape the mud off their shoes before entering!

Sheila, a very accomplished musi-cian, concluded her presentation with a bit of entertainment as she good naturedly played the banjo brought to the event by a supporter, inviting the audience to join her in singing three verses of This Land is My Land! Selections from her CD, Loose Gravel, were played frequently during the evening.

ABOUT THE CENTER The Kendall County Outdoor Edu-cation Center (KCOEC) is physical-ly located on the site of the Hoover Forest Preserve at 11285 Fox Road, two miles west of Yorkville, Illinois. The Regional Office of Education acts as the administrative agent for the center.

Because of this unique setting, the KCOEC has access to areas of prairie, hardwood forests, several streams, and the Fox River. The facil-ity also has several outdoor teaching stations, a small indoor classroom, a new team challenge course, a living history area, and a Native American tipi.

The mission of the KCOEC is to provide students the opportunity for experiential learning in an outdoor setting. A common thread woven into all outdoor education activities is a strong stewardship responsibility,

conservation ethic, and environmen-tal harmony.While enhancing the standard school curriculum, the KCOEC offers the opportunity for student decision-making, self-confi-dence development, team building, risk taking, leadership development, and personal adventure.

Historically, the KCOEC is funded through a cooperative that includes the school districts of Yorkville, Plano, Sandwich, and Somonauk, Il-linois. The Center provides services for the students within this coopera-tive. Groups outside the cooperative are also served on a space available basis.

The Center provides one-day, out-door education experiences for over 8,000 people each year. The partici-pants range in grade from pre-kin-dergarten through high school and adults. Each program day is devel-oped with the classroom teacher and is designed to enrich the classroom curriculum.

Activities at the KCOEC include: nature studies, living history, orien-teering, team building, and more. See the Scope and Sequence for more information.

The KCOEC has been providing quality outdoor learning experienc-es for the students of the Yorkville, Plano, Sandwich, and Somonauk school districts for the last 40 years. We look forward to continuing the adventure into the future.

VILLAGE GOES GREEN The "Green Village" Program is an ecologically friendly initiative that incorporates a variety of plans and ordinances determined to be sen-sitive to the needs of the environ-ment through new development and day-to-day activities in the Village of Plainfield. The "Green Village" initiative evolved due to the nation-ally rising green movement and the Village's desire to practice environ-mentally friendly best management practices and to commit to urban sustainability. It is believed that this initiative will aid in preserving the existing character and sense of place of the surrounding landscape for current residents and future generations.

"Green Village" will be ongoing and evolve with the passing of time as new ordinances and educational programs are created. Today, the initiative focuses on enhancing the Village's green network by preserv-ing land in a natural state and pro-viding links between the Village's green areas. The Village has already been named a Tree City and has been awarded the Urban Conser-vation Community Award by Will/South Cook Soil and Water Conser-vation District. The Village hopes to expand on environmental awareness by encouraging environmentally friendly best management practices and sustainable development prac-tices. The following items give a brief overview of what is being done with this initiative today.

Natural Landscap-ing Design Guidelines Native plantings are recognized for the aesthetic and ecological ben-efits they bring to an area including: Improving storm water manage-ment and controlling flooding. Reducing air pollution and the amount of chemicals need-ed for landscape maintenance. Increasing regional biodiver-sity and decreasing the num-bers of pests and diseases. Conserving water and preserving its quality. Providing historical and cultural in-terest by restoring and connecting residents to the original landscapes of the area.

To help residents interested in in-corporating native plantings on their properties, the Village has cre-ated illustrative Natural Landscap-ing Design Guidelines, a Natural Landscaping Brochure , a Natural Landscaping Maintenance Brochure , and a Natural Landscaping Poster that showcase the attractive flowers and native plants that residents may enhance their properties with.

The Village strongly supports the use of native plants in landscaping.

Native plants will help to restore the area's natural beauty and aid in creat-ing a unique identity for the Village.

The Village has also initiated a new permitting procedure that allows the Village to maintain an accurate re-cord of where naturally landscaped areas are throughout the Village and ensure that they are maintained cor-rectly to restore the area's natural beauty. Green Village 2012 Lecture Series The Village of Plainfield and the Plainfield Public Library District have partnered to present a series of monthly programs with an envi-ronmental focus. Programs are free and are held the second Monday of each month at the Plainfield Pub-lic Library, 15025 S. Illinois Street, Plainfield. Click here for a complete schedule. Beautification Plan The Beautification Plan focuses on identifying the green networks, or emerald necklace, that is prevalent in the Village, and then enhancing it by means of landscaping, lighting, signage, and public art displays. The Plan goes into great detail identifying goals for each element by creating Before & After pictures and outlining attractive areas of the public realm. The Beautification Plan envisions the creation of a network of richly land-scaped boulevards, parkways, and public parks which will help preserve the Village’s bucolic past through a comprehensive greening of the Vil-lage’s public realm. This new green fabric of boulevards, parkways, and parks will provide an opportunity to unify the various neighborhoods and commercial corridors together into a new town vision for the 21st century.

Today’s beautiful, sustainable city incorporates ideas from the Gar-den City and City Beautiful move-ments. It forms the basis of today’s progressive theories. The Village’s

Beautification Plan will aim to focus on four key components.

These components include: Stewardship, improvement, and maintenance of community assets. Coordinated planning and beautification programs. Excellence in design. Establish visually harmo-nized landscapes along cor-ridors throughout the Village. Countryside Plan The Countryside Plan encompasses approximately 1,500 acres along the far western perimeter of the Village and outlines a series of guidelines for all future development within this area. These 1,500 acres are locat-ed within the “Countryside Estate” district and this district allows for a density of less than 1.0 units per acre. The plan promotes two types of development; either “conserva-tion design” or “hamlet designs” within the area of the plan.

In addition, extensive “Best Man-agement Practices” are outlined throughout the plan and the plan identifies that future roadway

improvements throughout this area should be designed in a more nat-uralistic and ecologically friendly manner. Furthermore, specific de-sign guidelines area created through the plan for future residential and commercial development.

As outlined in the plan, a minimum of 50% of the area will be required to be set aside as perpetual open space for future generations and an extensive network of bike trails and pedestrian paths will be planned for the area. In addition, a number of recreational uses such as biking, walking and equestrian sports have all been identified as potential uses for this area.
