As we enter the home stretch o this
primary season, it important to note
that we live in a country that gives
us so much in terms o our reedom.
Our liestyle and our independence
are just some o the values we as
Americans oten take or granted.
This election season many o us nd
ourselves at the same point in time:
DEALING with the economic slow-down. Over the past our years, we
have witnessed both parties oering
programs and solutions to solving
our current state.
As with the principals o democ-
racy, the American people are the
best judges as to which road we will
travel in the next two years. So as
we begin early voting and anticipate
primary day, March 20th, please
join me and the sta o the Kend-

Profle inBusiness:Retreat in
Countyby Ron Bartlett
Located on Route 34 at the east end
o town, along scenic Rock Creek,
the Best Western Plus Hotel and
Conerence Center in Sandwich is
Kendall Countys premier location
or weddings, trade shows and busi-
ness conerences.
According to the Sales Director Cin-
dy Prohl, the hotel was the inspira-
tion o a long-time Sandwich amily
who saw a need or just such a venuein Kendall County, so the land was
purchased and trees were cleared
and used in the construction o the
hotel.
As you enter you will notice the large
timbers and woodwork (the trees
they cut down) used in the main
desk and lobby. Along with a beauti-
ul stone replace, you get the imme-
diate eeling o a lodge somewhere in
the north woods. All guests receive
complementary breakast, and with
100 guestrooms, there is plenty o
room or everyone to come and get
away rom it all.
The convention center is very spa-
cious with the hallway alone measur-
ing in at 7000 eet. The main room
can be partitioned o into three
rooms or let open or large gather-
ings, like the second annual Great
Outdoors Show that was held Feb-
ruary 3-5 and the Mixed Martial
Arts Cage Fighting Championships
held February 11th.
Upcoming events include the Brid-
al Expo and Wicked Wheels Mo-
tor Cycle & Car show, also held in
February. Sta is also working on a
concert series.
I your group is smaller, rooms o to
the side o the main room that meas-
ure in at 600 eet. There is even a
smaller meeting room down the hall
that hosts business networking meet-
ings. In act, the hotel boasts more
convention space then any hotel in
Aurora.
I you are looking or a nice place
to hold a wedding reception, there
is a separate room downstairs rom
the dinning room and lounge with aprivate bar and deck. It is also right
across the hall rom the pool, so you
can even have pool party i you like.
The lounge and dining room also
host numerous local bands, ranging
rom rock-n-roll to barbershop quar-
tets and the popular dueling pianos
that everyone has been talking about.
There is also a summer sand vol-
leyball league located in the back by
the parking lot that looks out on the
creek and has plenty o parking spac-
es or you and all your guests.
So i youre planning an event in theuture, instead o traveling into the
city, why not stay closer to home and
give the Best Western Plus in Sand-
wich a try? They have the same great
amenities, or even better than you

Cupid Missedthe MarkBy Nadia Kanhai
Valentines Daya day o love and
romance, roses and chocolateex-
cept sometimes Cupids arrow leaves
a nasty esh wound.
I I am suspicious o the Hallmark
holiday, am I a skeptic or am I a real-
ist? I dont need a dozen roses that
will droop within a week. And while I
need the chocolate (antioxidant-lad-
en dark chocolate, preerably), Ill be
thrilled i you buy it on February 15
or hal-price. That way, I get twice
as much or the buck. You can makeme a greeting card; you dont have to
invest in Hallmark or their competi-
tors. But dont give me a plastic r ing
rom the gumball machine (thats
another story).
To catch a glimpse into my cynicism,
I share this story. The Valentines
Day that stands out in my memory
was one o lies creepy jokes.
We were young, in love, and engaged.
Lie should have been perect. We
met or a nice Valentines Day din-
ner, just as we had planned. Dressed
or success, we strolled downtown
to the steak house. However, while
the evening seemed picture-perect
on the surace, tension was brewing
underneath. I tried not to let it both-
er me. Then, beore I knew it, I was
being dumpedover dinner. It was
as i I were trapped in a nightmare
the world was surreal. I was hearing
the words, but they werent sinking
in. I couldnt believe my ears. Yester-
day, we had been happy. Today, I was
hearing bizarre excuses.
Fortunately or oddly enough, we
were close riends. We had been
riends beore dating. We were still
riends, though not ancs. We
strolled around the park ater din-
ner, as I tried to digest the news that
tasted very at and rather rotten.
Showing o, he jumped a ence and
ripped his pants. Poetic justice, as his
pants were too tight. He was wearing
khakis, and his skimpy orest-green
undies showed like a sore thumb.
No, I didnt deserve the cold shoul-
der that night. I had done nothing
wrongbut I didnt know that un-til aterwards. His guilty conscious
was getting the better o him, and he
broke up with me because o some-
thing he had done, not anything I
had done.
To be honest, that Valentines Day
rom hell was just one chapter in a
comedic soap opera airy tale. The
story didnt end that evening. Even-
tually, we got married, raised an awe-
some amily, and stayed together or
20 years. And he learned to buy me
rose bushes we could plant in the
spring and enjoy or years to come,
and hal-price chocolate hearts thatdidnt last as long, except on my
waistline.
Valentines Day is just another day
one o 366 this year, but I hope its a
good one or you. I its not, just wait
until tomorrow, my riend, and may-
be Ill run into you at the store buy-
ing hal-price conectionery delights.

Letter to EditorMy name is Amy Cesich and I am
running or a seat on the Kendall
County Board District 1.
I have lived in Kendall County or
almost seven years. Our amily
moved to this area to enjoy the open
spaces and to be part o a growing
community.
I believe strongly in volunteerism,
have had the honor o being a mem-
ber o our community HOA Board,
and currently serve on the Yorkville
Parks and Rec Board. Having al-
ways been interested in politics andthe governing o our community, I
became involved with the Kendall
County Democratic Central Com-
mittee and serve as our Media Rela-
tions Director.
We enjoy special resources here in
Kendall County with Silver Springs
State Park, the Fox River running
through several cities, and a thriving
agricultural industry. My involve-
ment with the Yorkville Parks and
Rec Board, my past experiences with
Board operations, and longtime pas-
sion or enjoying and preserving our
natural resources, will serve me well
as a County Board member.
Its been said that things get done by
those who show up, and I'm show-
ing up! I believe that the major-
ity o voters want a candidate who
has an open mind, wants a scally
responsible government, and who
shares their desire or a better com-
munity or all o us. To learn more

A Visit to
InstanbulGlobe Trecker with
Robert Enriquez
On 11 May 330 AD, at about the
time he became the very rst chris-
tian emperor, Constantine the Great
declared a New Rome the capital o
his empire. His selection, 1000 miles
east o Rome, was made in an e-
ort to get away rom the entrenched
decadence o the actual capital, and
or over a Millenia, it was a success.
(Located at about 41 1 7 North
Latitude in what is known as Ana-
tolia, were it in the United States, it
would place New Rome at about
mile south o Dwight, Illinois, on
Rout 47, with similar weather and
seasons.)
Early on, New Rome was also called
Byzantium or an earlier Greek city
there, already more than 1,000 years
old. But the name Constantino-
ple, or City o Constantine, is the
name that survived or 1,600 years,
ater which it was ofcially changed
in 1930 (using a word derived rom
a long-lost root; a contraction o the
Greek words eis tan Polis or in
the City, on reerencing roadsigns).
To this day, people wonder when or
where Constantinople actually ex-
isted, or did it ever exist? This is not
surprising since one cannot nd the
name on a modern map. Still, the
name conjures greatness, splendor,
history, culture, and knowledge. Its
earlier name-root Byzantine still
means highest and unknowable in
English.
Constantinople, the mystical placestill indeed exists, with all its splen-
dor and culture intact as modern-day
Istanbul in Turkey. Geographically
placed between Asia and Europe, Is-
tanbul has seen the likes o Darius
the Great, Xerxes, Alexander the
Great, Cesar, Tamerlane, Seljuks,
Mongols, our Crusades and the Ot-
tomans. It is an incredibly layered
city, archaeologically, historically and
culturally. Its architecture reects its
many inuences, nowhere more so
than Hagia Sophia, rst a splendid
christian church, now a magnicent
mosque open to millions o visitors
rom around the world. Gold, spic-es, grains, woods, and jewels in vast
amounts have been traded or 3,000
years in the city markets, and these
lace Turkish cuisine, language and
culture to this day.
I you would like to visit a mega-
city truly ancient and modern at the
same time, Istanbul has ew equals
on our planet. Each time I have vis-
ited it, I have come away with new
insights and thoughts about its his-
tory. Turkish people are welcoming,
hospitable, highly educated, and
many speak English very well.

The Blackhawksskid continues
as their winlessstreak hits 8
gamesBlackhawks Report
By Ron Bartlett
The poor play continues or the
Hawks as they lost or the 6th straight
time on the road trip, with disap-
pointing games against Colorado,
who had scored more than 2 goals
in only two o their last 12 games.
Colorado scored ve times against
the Hawks goalies, and the same was
true in the loss to San Jose on Friday.
The road trip continued Satur-
day with a 7:30 tilt in the desert asthe Hawks looked to end their skid
against the Phoenix Coyotes. Sadly,
the game started the same way it did
in San Jose the night beore, with
the Coyotes jumping out to a 2 goal
lead. They never looked back as they
out played the Hawks on their way to
a 3 0 shutout win.
The Hawks goaltending is not get-
ting any better, and there are rumors
that the Blackhawks scouts have
been at several o the NY Islander
games, looking at veteran goalie Ev-
geni Nabokov. A trade could be in
the works.
They need to do something soon to
try and snap the skid. They needed
to get at least 14 points out o a pos-
sible 18, and right now as it stands,
they have 1 point out o 12.
The road trip will start back up onTuesday with a tough game against
division rival Nashville Predators,
the team that started the Hawks on
this losing streak back on January
21st.
It has been a while since the boys in
the red sweaters have tasted victory.
Lets hope they can return the avor
and knock o the Preds.
It will not be easy to make the
playos now, so every game rom
here on out will be big. Lets
hope they turn it around soon.

Sealing Duct Leaks
The duct work is considered part o
the thermal boundary because they
are ull air rom the home.
Return air ducts
Ducts that are attached to the
garage or run through the attic
and crawlspace can create quite
a bit o air leakage. Sealing the
ducts in these areas should begin
near the air handler (urnace). The
leaks here are under higher pres-
sure and should be dealt with rst,
because they can depressurize the

combustion zone o the heating
equipment and cause backdrating
that could lead to carbon monoxide
poisoning.
Seal all gaps and cracks or openings
with duct mastic or oil duct tape.
As discussed beore, use the back o
your hand to nd the problem areas.
Careully inspect and seal leaksat all transition areas, like bends
elbows or any change o direction in
the ducts. Also dont orget to seal
around the lter assembly.
Supply Ducts
Inspect and seal these areas appro-
priately. The plenum joint at the air
handler is a big concern as this has
been a difcult spot or HVAC in-
stallers to asten. Use silicone caulk
or oil duct tape instead o mastic,
to make or easier access in case
maintenance is required. Seal all
joint elbows and direction changes,
like you did or the return air ducts.Flexible ducts should be inspected
regularly at the main duct branch
to ensure no air is leaking and or
any type o mechanical damage or
animal activity.
Duct boots, registers and chases,
should be sealed around the wall,
oor and ceilings. I the opening
is too big to be sealed with oam
or caulk, use a ridged barrier like
plywood, drywall, or ridged oam
board.
Lastly, you may consider sealing o
supply and return registers in unoc-cupied basements and crawl spaces.
As always, you should use common
sense and proper saety equipment.
I you are not sure about something,
consult a proessional.
