Dear Parents/Carers I hope this newsletter finds you all well. Uniform is becoming rather untidy. Please ensure your child is in school uniform. It promotes school pride and belonging. It also helps them to maintain their Good Standing. The uniform can be purchased from Katanning SportsPower.

As can be seen by the figures above, 49 students have been suspended this year for poor behaviours. Only 8 of the 49 have re-offended. This shows the vast majority of students learn from suspension and choose to do the right thing. A quarter of all suspensions are because the student is disrespectful to the teacher and/or used bad language. Whole school assemblies will not resume until the Government moves to Stage 5 of the COVID recovery. We are hoping this will be about mid-August. Until then we will run assemblies in two groupings. One for 10, 11 and 12 and one for 7, 8 and 9. This allows for some social distancing. We are rapidly moving towards OLNA testing. Year 9 students will do OLNA instead of NAPLAN this year. It is imperative any Year 12 students who have not yet passed sit the test and do their best. Failing to pass means they will not achieve their Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE). The Senior School Ball is almost upon us. Tickets went on sale Tuesday, 4 August and the event is scheduled to go ahead on Saturday 29 August, COVID restrictions depending. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the P&C and their Ball Committee for managing this important event on the school calendar. The theme this year is Winter Wonderland. Students have completed selecting their courses for Year 11 2021. We are going through the final checks to ensure students have chosen wisely and parents/carers are aware of their child’s selections. We have a wide range of courses including: TAFE Certificates, Courses of Study at three levels – Foundations, General and ATAR. Please note that there will be a School Development Day on Friday 21 August (Week 5, Term 3). Students do not attend on this day. Congratulations on the recent Bushrangers Camp. A great time was had by everyone. It is good to see

excursions starting up again.

Congratulations to those students who are regularly attending school. They are giving themselves the best opportunity to succeed. Every day away from school has a negative impact on student learning. The following table is colour-coded to reflect the Department of Education’s rating system that school’s use to monitor student attendance at school: <60% Severely at risk attendance 60-80% Moderately at risk attendance 80-90% Indicated at risk attendance 90% or greater Regular attendance

Our attendance rates are continuing to increase as the number of days that students have attended, is counteracting the number of days that students were absent due to COVID-19-related absences. The attendance rate of all year levels being between 70-82% is concerning though as that is a lot of missed learning. Top Attenders for Term 2 At the assemblies next week, the student services team will recognise those students who had excellent attendance for Term 2 (from the compulsory return date of 18 May). Students with 100% attendance will be acknowledged with a certificate and reward at the assembly (these students have an asterisk next to their name below). STUDENT SERVICES

TERM 2 GOOD STANDING REWARD Midnight Milos was the theme of the Term 2 Good Standing reward, held on Wednesday and Thursday in the final week of last term. There were 33 Year 7 students, 26 Year 8, 23 Year 9, 39 Year 10, 24 Year 11 and 22 Year 12 students invited to attend the event, 167 students in total. All students who attended, enjoyed a relaxed morning tea with milo, muffins and soft jazz music, a Boho themed picnic with a darkened room and festoon lights creating the atmosphere. Thank you to Mr Rosenstreich and Mr Sinclair who kindly gave up their classroom for the two days and thank you to the Student Services Team who helped decorate and cook for the event. Chaplains Chat Stay Calm! Do we act or react to situations that arise in our life each day? Are we the type of person who is pro-active and will stop and assess the situation quietly to determine the best outcome for ourselves and those around us or are we impulsive and reactive?

A woman was sitting in her lounge when a small black snake suddenly appeared, slithered across the room, and made its way under the couch. Being deathly afraid of snakes, she ran to the bathroom to get her husband, who was taking a shower. He came running from the shower with just a towel around his waist, grabbed an old broom handle from the cupboard, and began poking under the couch. At this point the family dog awakened. Curious to see what was happening, the dog came up behind the husband and touched his cold nose to the back of the man’s heel. The man, thinking the snake had bitten him on the heel, fainted. The wife concluded that her husband had collapsed with a heart attack, so she ran from the house to a hospital just a street away. The ambulance drivers promptly came to her house and placed him on the stretcher. But as they were carrying him out, the snake reappeared from underneath the couch. One of the drivers got such a fright that he dropped his end of the stretcher and broke the man’s leg. Seeing her husbands twisted leg, the wife collapsed on the spot. Meanwhile the snake slithered quietly away! (The Word For Today. Sept Oct Nov) A wise man once said “keep your head in all situations”. Acting impulsively usually means things will get worse before they get better. So, before you panic, calm yourself down and ask God for wisdom and help, even in the simplest of things. SCIENCE

On the Friday of Week 1 ‘A Case of Conspiracy’ science incursion where students from Year 7 to 10 and the Year 11 Integrated Science class explored real forensic science techniques and applied the science they learned to solve the case of drugs and murder. The gym became a crime scene and forensic laboratory where a dozen activities were set up. Once the presenter had given details of the gruesome crime and identified the suspects the students set out to investigate the clues. From ballistics to DNA, students were able to do comparisons, take fingerprints and piece together the evidence. Acting like forensic scientists and police detectives they identified the guilty party.

We would like to thank the P&C for their generous donation for the cost of the incursion and the Health & Phys Ed Team for giving us the use of their Gym for the day. HOME ECONOMICS

An exciting start to the Term has seen our students get straight back into hands-on projects. All students are doing an amazing job in Technologies. A new group of Year 7 students have settled in well to their Food & Fibre class, taking responsibility in managing themselves and their new equipment. They have practiced the chopping skills and enjoyed eating their self-made fruit salad. Year 8 Food & Fibre students are having a real sewing bee. They are using sewing machines and working towards their “L-Plates” in sewing. Important coordination skills and an understanding of basic sewing techniques have been developed as part of the curriculum. Last Term Year 9 Food & Fibre group enjoyed producing their own designed apron. This Term students have started refreshing their cooking, cleaning and group work skills and have produced delicious muesli slices and flaky pizzas. Students are also learning how to read the food labels.

Year 10 Food & Fibre group has done revision of the sewing machine skills and produced magnificent little chicken pin cushions. They are looking forward to learning cross stitch embroidery skills.

Year 11 Food Science and Technology students are excitedly participating in the ‘Big Bake Off’ Task. Students are tasked with focusing on a staple food product like wheat flour. They use different methods of cooking to produce their product for judging against the sensory properties. This includes being judged on taste, texture, appearance and aroma. Students have had a great competition in making scones last week and are looking forward to another two weeks. We have invited Mrs Allen, Mrs Garrity and Mr Gaudin to judge their culinary skills. Congratulations to the winners of the scone competition, Eh Christ Paw & Afiqah Imran.

Year 12 Textile class have been extremely proud of themselves in making the patchwork quilt in two weeks for Royal Flying Doctors Services. They are now busy designing and producing the garment/outfits of their own choice.

Year 12 Food Science and Technology students have been learning about primary and secondary food processing and have produced a variety of recipes.

CLONTARF FOUNDATION KATANNING ACADEMY

Term 3 Albany Camps We were finally able to go on two camps to Albany at the end of Term 3, due to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions. It was great to see so many boys had maintained high attendance in spite of the interruptions in Term 1 and 2 to earn their spot. We enjoyed ten pin bowling, a basketball game and training with the North Albany Academy, fishing and a visit to the Gap and Blow Holes. A highlight of the trip was the Master Chef Challenge. Two teams were given a budget to purchase groceries and cook dinner. It was clear to see the boys who had experience cooking at home. The camps were a great opportunity to reflect on the recent challenges we have faced and plan for a strong finish to the year. Tambellup Training Session

On Friday 31 July, the boys rose early to make the journey out to Tambellup for a football training session. We were joined by Acting Seargent Rob Adamczyk, who was very impressed to see the dedication of the boys to the programme and encouraged them to continue their engagement in school. It was also great to have students from Tambellup Primary join in the training session. A big thankyou to Jane Cunningham for opening the toilets and the use of the barbeque. Our next Tambellup training session is scheduled for Friday 11 September.

Wagin Visit Our year 9 boys visited Wagin District High School on Tuesday 4 August to play a game of basketball and share information about the Katanning Clontarf Academy. Unfortunately, the weather was not the best for basketball but the boys enjoyed the opportunity to meet and interact with the Wagin students and teach them about our pillars of education, sport, leadership, wellbeing and employment. Thank you to AIEO Emmaline Winmar for inviting us to Wagin DHS. We hope to catch up again in the future.

We finished Term 2 with a celebration of what the students had achieved in Semester 1, 2020. The students, parents and carers were invited to the library for the event on Wednesday evening. Each student had completed a reflection on their academic and personal achievements, highlights and goals and shared these with their parents. The students also catered for the event and the food was gone within minutes. It was also great to see a number of staff there to celebrate with the students but to also meet the parents. Three dedicated students were awarded The Follow the Dream Attendance Award for their commitment to the program and attendance to more than 80% of tutoring sessions.

Term 3 has started quickly, beginning day 1 where the students set their new goals with a reflection on their Semester 1 reports and creating their Personal Learning Plans. Some students have already got stuck into their school work completing assignments and homework during tutoring. We will also be doing some enrichment activities this term with the students embarking on silk scarf painting after investigating different variations

of Aboriginal Art, a STEM activity where they have to build an elastic band powered model car and discovering their family history through a family tree.

MOORDITJ WAANGKINY (Good News)

This week we all celebrated a birthday. A mammoth birthday shout out to Ethan for turning 13. A thank you to Larry for making a delicious Dino-mite cupcake tower. Leroy continued building a Harry Potter Castle, it is looking amazing. Good job! He has been working on this project for a term and a half. We all did a ‘fight to the death’ on a monopoly game which turns out Ethan is a master at, better watch out Richard Branson.

BUSH RANGERS

Bush Rangers restarted near the end of Term 2 and went for a bike riding day trip along the Collie-Darkan Rail Trail on the Sunday of Week 9. Everyone rode 16km, with many doing an extra section to get to 20km. The weather was lovely and everyone had a good time riding along this scenic section of bush and farm land. The focus of our next few sessions was orienteering practice as we prepared for our Rogaining Camp at the end of Week 2 this term, including a mini version at the Marmion St block in preparation. In the Rogaining Competition we had five teams and the leaders were impressed by all the Cadets teamwork, perseverance and determination. This was a 24 hour event, with a 6 hour School Championship sub-section. Nic, Leroy, Simon and Miss Watson won the 6 hour School Championship, while Jonte, Sean, Chayse, Jack and Mrs Sadler pushed ahead to win the 24 hour Cadet State Championship. Despite some setbacks with occasional wrong turns, prickly blackberry bushes and falls in the creek; all the teams did really well, travelling between 25km and 45km over the event, and several earnt their 500 points badges. Anxiety – how to help your child All children experience anxious feelings as part of their normal childhood development. Some anxious feelings include fear, agitation, nervousness, worry and apprehension. Some children find it harder to get these feelings under control and may experience anxiety more intensely and more often than others. Anxiety is when the level of fear or worry about something is out of proportion to the level of risk or danger. Thinking about the situation makes them more worried and tense. If your child is experiencing anxiety try to:

Acknowledge your child’s fear – don’t dismiss or ignore it.

Gently encourage them to do things they’re anxious about, but don’t push them to face situations they’re not yet ready to face.

Wait until they actually get anxious before you step in to help.

Praise him for doing something they’re anxious about, rather than criticising them for being afraid.

Avoid labelling your child as ‘shy’ or ‘anxious’. Your child might need some extra support if their anxiety stops them from doing the things they want to do or interferes with their friendships, school work or family life. Youth Focus provides online counselling Service for young people aged 12-25 years old. Their qualified professionals are available to discuss any topic in a non-judgmental and confidential environment with the young person. If you are worried about your child and are interested in accessing this service please contact a member of the student service team at KSHS by ringing 9891 1100. Enrolments are now open for VacSwim swimming lessons during the October and December/January school holidays. The programs offer lessons for all levels, from beginners to advanced swimmers.
