Dear Parents and Guardians

The first three weeks of term 2 have been very busy.

Last week I met with the Principal’s of the Wheatbelt Senior High Schools and Agricultural Colleges and the Regional Executive Director Mr Neil Darby. Neil is going on 4 weeks leave and is being backfilled by A/Regional Executive Director, Ms Lisa Criddle, who also attended the meeting. We met at Northam Senior High School and had a very informative and productive day. We discussed the new WACE changes which will see a reduction of Certificate courses that do not lead to employment pathways in all schools and the introduction of a pathway that comprises general courses of study with no requirement to do a Certificate course.

I received a letter from the Acting Deputy Director General, Schools, Mr Stephen Baxter, informing me the school has now met all the expectations regarding improvement in relation to the Expert Review Group (ERG) findings from 2014. He congratulated the staff for their professional commitment to implementing the improvement agenda. This is an important milestone in our journey of school improvement and we look forward to reaching new goals and improved outcomes for the students at Katanning Senior High School.

Year 11 students commencing their senior secondary studies in 2020 will have an additional option to achieve their WACE. This additional option will provide students with the opportunity to complete five Year 12 General courses if they choose not to undertake four or more ATAR courses or a VET Certificate Il or higher.

This additional pathway removes the need for students to enrol in VET programs that may not suit their post-school requirements. For some students, five Year 12 General courses (or a combination of General and up to three (3) ATAR courses) may be more suitable.

Please also note the additional information below:

With the introduction of this additional Pathway all other requirements for achieving the WACE — the literacy and numeracy standard; breadth and depth requirement (20 units or the equivalent and a combination of list A and B courses) and achievement standard (a minimum number of C grades) remain unchanged.

Of the 20 units students need to achieve their WACE, up to 4 units (two in Year 1 1 and two in Year 12), may be substituted through the completion of a Certificate ll.

Of the 20 units students need to achieve their WACE, up to 4 units (two in Year 1 1 and two in Year 12), may be substituted through the completion of Endorsed Programs.

Students completing Foundation courses in Year 12 will be required to undertake the pathway requiring a Certificate Il or higher VET qualification to achieve their WACE.

Just a reminder that we now have a school jumper that will soon be available from Sports Power. Hoodies are not permitted at school. Undershirts should be white, blue or red.

Could I please remind parents and carers it is dangerous to drop students off in the morning where the bus stops are located at the top end of Golf Links Road. Please drop students further down the street to ensure everyone’s safety. It is not only difficult for the bus drivers but also for students walking to school who cross over at the intersection.

There is a lot of bullying occurring using Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. The school has no control over this as phone use is banned at school. Please be aware of this issue and ensure your child is using telecommunications appropriately.

The intervention program in place for Year 7,8 and 9 run by Ms Anyon and Mrs Mills is going very well and we hope to see very positive improvement in literacy and numeracy skills for the students involved. Well done to these staff members and the students involved.

The OLNA workshops have meant a large number of students have now achieved their OLNA at the required level and that makes them eligible for WACE. Congratulations to all the students who passed and to Mrs Anderson and Mr Gaudin for running the workshop practice classes and the tests.

We will be having an assembly in week 5 and I encourage parents and carers to attend. You will be given more information closer to the event.

There will be a Parent Information night for students enrolling in Year 11, 2020 in week 6 this term. A date and time is still to be advised.

Just a reminder that the Hospitality students run a pop up café, on Tuesdays during school terms, from the Town Hall. They would love you to pop in and grab a drink or a bite to eat or even just to say hello.

Thank you for your support of the school.

In Week 7 Katanning Senior High School held the 2019 Faction Swimming Carnival. While weather in the lead up to the event was worrying, Katanning Aquatic Centre greeted the carnival with beautiful sunny weather and ideal swimming conditions. The event consisted of Championship Events (Freestyle, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Backstroke), complimented by Novelty Events including ‘Staff Fishing’, ‘Running Races’, ‘Egg and Spoon’ and the ‘Tractor Tube Derby’. It was fantastic to see a high level of participation on the day with students, staff and even parents taking the opportunity to engage in friendly competition. A new format of team awards was introduced at the 2019 carnival with two overall trophies up for grabs; the ‘Participation Shield’ and the ‘Championship Cup. The Participation Shield is awarded to the faction with the highest combined participation points (in championship events) and novelty points, while the Championship Cup is awarded to the faction with the highest points score from championship events and relays. Following on from the KSHS Carnival a team of students represented Katanning at the G.S.S.S.S.A Championship event in Mount Barker. The team was united throughout the day with sensational performances by several swimmers. Highlights of the event include a Runner – Up Champion performance by Year 7 Tiffany Butterworth and a clean sweep in the Year 8 Freestyle and Medley Relays by the KSHS Team which consisted of two year 7 and two year 8 girl! Well done to Hallee Beeck, Tiffany Butterworth, Mia Hamon and McKenzie French on a fantastic performance. The Health and Physical Education Department would like to thank all the staff, students and parents who have made the 2019 swimming carnivals a success.

On Saturday 23 March students from Years 10, 11 and 12 attended the annual school ball organised by the P&C. This year, including partners, there were 94 tickets sold. The 2019 theme, chosen by the students, was ‘Hollywood’ and the students certainly lived up to the style, with lots of glitz and glamour. Students were given a creative drinks menu featuring mock tails named after famous actors or movies – for example ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ and ‘Thor’s hammer”. Guests and students were greeted at the door by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper (aka the uniform mannequins from KSHS) and the room was stylishly decorated in Hollywood theme, featuring famous movie posters, red carpet and paparazzi back drops for photos. Local company Mohana catered for the event and provided some beautiful and tasty food, while DJ Gino blasted out plenty of songs to dance to. Photography was once again done by Bliss Photography and students are able to order their photos online. For further information about photo orders, please contact the front office. The school ball is an annual event organised by the P&C Ball Committee which consists of parents, students and a staff representative (or two) from KSHS. The onus is on parents to fundraise, plan and prepare for the ball (coordinating purchase of items needed etc.), as well as set up and clean-up of the ball. Due to extremely low numbers of parent helpers in the past, our Ball Policy now states a minimum number of parents attending meetings regularly each year or the Ball will not go ahead. Please, if you are a parent or carer of Year 10, 11 or 12 students would like to be involved with the 2020 Senior School Ball, come along to a P&C meeting and join the committee. Massive thank you must go to the following people for all of their help with the Hollywood Ball 2019: Ball Committee – for planning and running the event Staff who supervised on the night – without these staff there would be no ball Speakers – Carolyn Cook and Nerida Campbell Wendy Allen for selling tickets Parents for spending so much time and money helping your children prepare Students who attended for their excellent dress and behaviour I look forward to finding out the theme of the 2020 ball. Update from the Mainstream Maths & Literacy Program Miss Anyon and Mrs Mills

Term one was very busy whilst setting up the programs and getting them running. There were many trials and errors, but we have also had some success. All the testing and data entry has been completed, with file records on every student entered. The setting up of small groups in their year levels has been a great success, with all groups now settled and there’s even some budding friendships with some younger groups (Year 7). In the Maths program most groups worked on multiplication and division skills. Some of the groups have already

completed some of the Mathletics books and are already showing improvement. Quote from a student, “Division is

not that scary!”

Over the term I have tried to come up with some

creative ways to keep the students engaged. One

that worked really well was

invisible ink. I wrote all the

math questions on the

desk in invisible ink and

the students had to use a

blue light to answer the

questions. For a few

students it saw a massive

increase in their

engagement with the

class.

I introduced some pedal bikes

to some of math groups. We

saw some positive results with

the boys almost immediately.

They would sit longer and stay

on task. It was initially a novelty

and it was like the Tour de

France in class, but since then

they've calmed down. A feature

on the bike displays how many

rotations were completed

during the session. At the end

of each math session the

students calculate the distance

pedaled. Over Term 1 the boys

collectively pedaled 32.6km.

With the groups set in Literacy, the next goal was to have a solid routine running within our groups. This started

with a shared reading of the Alba series books. Each student having a book means that all students in the groups

are fully engaged, reading or listening. Students can read one page, or one chapter, it’s their choice. This helps

them to build up their confidence in reading in front of an audience. All groups happily read aloud, sometimes de-

bating who is going to read first.

The Alba book series have a wide range of worksheet

activities, which the students complete before the week

has finished. They also do a spelling test at the end of

that week of words targeted in the reading book.

Once the shared reading is completed, the students

have a group activity, with myself asking verbal

questions such as true or false, or recall of facts

about the book which was just read. To succeed in

this, students needed to have been listening!! This

is a good activity with the students, as they all get

involved, and offer correct answers if their peers get

it wrong. This sometimes turns into a debate, which

we resolve by referring to the book, which is a good

strategy.

ESL students – With ample resources for these students,

we have been concentrating on the sounds of the alphabet

and the correct formation

of the letters, upper case

and lower case. Taqi

takes alphabet tracing

home for homework.

Home Reading Folders – Some students (mainly

Year 7 students, with a few Year 8’s, one Year 9 &

one Year 10 student) are taking a folder home and

recording their reading. This routine has been

popular, with students turning up early morning or

late afternoon, renewing books.

Over the last couple of weeks of Term 1 in Digital Technologies the Year 8 classes have been exploring the applications of technologies. Mr Kan’s class have started modifying designs that they are 3D printing and Miss Gray’s class have been coding CODEBUG’s to solve a problem. The Year 7 classes have finalised their reader choice PowerPoint Assignments and have begun exploring formula functions in Excel or finished learning to program Edison robots and have had applied their learning in a Jousting tournament.

Term 2 has found Digital Technology students changing topics and, for the Year 8 students, changing teacher. Some Year 7’s are focusing on building typing skills and the design process through Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel projects. Others are now delving into how the computer works – exploring the hardware, networks and some basic coding. Year 8’s with Ms Gray will be further exploring computer networks and further developing their skills in coding and data collection. Year 8 students with Mr Kan will explore the do’s and don’ts of computer safety, data representation using Excel and then project manipulation using the 3D printer.

Our Inclusive Learning students went on an excursion to the Katanning Public Library and Woolworths. Students are currently working through the ASDAN program “Out in the Community” module, these life skills activities allow students to practice their independent and social skills. They had a wonderful time exploring what the library had to offer and discovered a great collection of books, DVD’s and games. Kyle, Larry and Kaden had fun playing the mini soccer game. From the library students walked to Woolworths and practiced their road crossing safety skills which is a very important life skill. As part of developing their independent skills, students had to write a shopping list of items needed to make biscuits for Mother’s Day. Taleeah took charge of the shopping list and made sure we got everything. Kaden was checking the prices to keep us on budget and at the checkout Larry helped Kaden scan items on the self-serve machine to pay for our purchases. Great team work guys! For that very special person in their life – MUM, students made beautiful roses from egg cartons, a pop-up box card and baked a giant melting moment biscuit! We hope all mums enjoyed their treat. We look forward to another busy and exciting Term 2! Inclusive Learning Team

INCLUSIVE LEARNING

Breakfast Café has been such a busy little hub this term. We have taken on the Woolworths Earn and Learn stickers and have had students sticking all our collected stickers into the sticker books. We are hoping to earn over 21,000 stickers this year so please keep sending them in!

We were kindly donated an electric frypan last term by the Katanning Baptist Church which was dropped off by the lovely Lyn Squibb. The frypan has been busy frying eggs, bacon and pancakes this term.

We have also welcomed 2 amazing staff members on board the Breakfast Café morning rush, Mrs Tia Hughes and Miss Maura Humphries. Both ladies have been a valuable support for both students and Leanne and Marrisa! A huge thankyou to Miss Humphries for donating Milo this week, with the cold weather coming in a warm cup of milo is a perfect start to the day for our students. We welcome all staff to come and have a sit down or a chat with the Breakfast Café crew each morning.

It appears we have overdone our toastie machine and somehow snapped the handle. We are now calling out for a donation of a 4 slice toastie machine if anyone has one in the cupboard collecting dust please bring it in as we will make good use of it.

With the cold weather creeping in the Breakfast café is a warm and inviting area to start your morning, we hope to see more students popping in for a visit this term.

We welcome Mr Peter Jardine as Pre Service Teacher from Edith Cowen University. He will be with us until the end of Term 2 and practicing his teaching with Year 10 Food Specialisation and Year 11 Food Science & Technology. All students are doing a great job in Home Economics. The Year 7 Cooking class are proud of themselves, they have made fruit salad while learning knife skills.

Another Year 7 group has shown creativity in the art of weaving while creating a heart project and they are gaining confidence in producing a small coaster.

The two Year 8 groups for this term have started sewing and cooking. The sewing class have learnt how to safely use a machine and will now put that theory into practise by trying to sew straight lines, curves and attempt 90 degree corners properly before designing a crazy creature. The second class have baked their first batch of traditional scones and successfully achieved light,

fluffy scones – seen here being enjoyed by some of the budding chefs with jam and cream. Hopefully the cooking students were able to make some for their mothers for Mother’s Day this last weekend. Year 10 Cooking students have been busy in designing and cooking the international recipes. All are showing their investigative and creative skills in producing the poster for festivals around the world. Year 11 Textile class have been very enthusiastic in making boxer shorts and tie dyeing T-shirts for their loved ones.

Year 11 Food Science and Technology students have been learning about the Australian nutritional theories, Healthy Living Pyramid & Australian Guide to Healthy Eating and factors affecting food choices among adolescences.

Year 12 Food Science and Technology & Children Family and the Community students have been extremely busy in preparing themselves for External Set Task. Sushila Malik Home Economics - Learning Area Manager

Netball WA - Great Southern High School Cup

(Previously known as the Bendigo Bank Netball Cup)

On Thursday 9 May 2019 Katanning Senior High School took 53 competitors, 6 umpires and 6 coaches to Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre to compete in the annual Netball WA - High School Cup. This year is the 26th year that the tournament has been running for and it had a record number of teams participating. Fourteen schools from the Great Southern Region entered a total of 63 teams. Katanning Senior High School was able to keep tradition going and sent one team for each division; lower school girls, lower school boys, middle school girls, middle school boys, upper school girls and upper school boys.

We would like to thank and congratulate all of our coaches and umpires for doing a wonderful job throughout the day. This year the lower school girls were coached by Gail Butterworth and umpired by Imogen Van Zyl. The lower school boys were coached by Matt Rae and umpired by Eh Law. The middle school girls were coached by Kei-Leigh Miniter and umpired by Sophie Haenga. The middle school boys were coached by Sonya Woods and umpired by Aaliyah Hall. The upper school girls were coached by Mrs Tenelle Quartermaine and umpired by Cyaniqah Rangawhenua and the upper school boys were coached by Ms Taneesha Price and umpired by Ambrea Bolt.

Unfortunately no teams were able to come home with the silverware, but all teams showed fantastic sportsmanship and team spirit on court. The middle school boys came runner up in their division and the lower school girls won all of their fixtures but then lost by 1 goal in their first crossover game (there was 4 pools of lower school girls).

The HPE Department would like to thank all the players, volunteer umpires, coaches and assistants for supporting this event.

ATAR VISIT

During Week 9 the Year 11 and 12 ATAR students got to visit our sister school Greenwood College. The purpose of this trip was for our students to meet students from the same courses as them, some of whom we are in moderation partnership with, experience larger classes and see the facilities of a city school. Students who join Video Conferencing lessons with a Greenwood class were able to meet their teachers and peers which was very useful.

We were also fortunate to be able to join their High Flyers club for breakfast and hear an inspirational talk from West Coast Eagles player Oscar Allen who spoke about utilising opportunities, setting goals and pursuing dreams. It was a very interesting and useful excursion.

Miss Watson

The Bush Ranger Cadets are looking forward to an exciting term with camp at the Stirling Rangers (climbing Bluff Knoll) in June and then a big camp to Karijini National Park in the July school holidays. This will be a Reward Camp for around 23 cadets who show great commitment to the program and will include exploring the gorges, volunteering to help the DBCA Rangers and having a go at abseiling with West Oz Adventures. To help with this camp we will be doing some fundraising activities so please look out for us (and support us) at the Farmer’s Markets, wood raffle and car wash (dates TBC). During the term we will also do some cooking on stoves and fires, ride our bikes and help with community clean ups and hopefully tree plantings. Sarah Watson Unit Leader

The last week of Term 1, Year 9.1 and 9.2 HASS classes went on excursion to the Albany ANZAC centre. We arrived at 10.30am and students started to explore the old bunkers and machinery that is situated all around the area connected with the ANZAC centre. Students tried out the different types of long range heavy artillery and went up to the lookout over looking the bay where our ANZACs left via the ships that transported them to the battle fields. At midday there was a display of volunteers in period costume firing the nine pound gun ending with the traditional salute. Everyone there was issued with ear plugs as the gun can be quite loud, even thought there was still a few screams and a few disappointed comments that it wasn’t loud enough. We split the 9’s in to two groups and one group explored the grounds and museums while the other attended the ANZAC centre and then we swapped around. As we entered the centre we were all issued with a listening device that you also used as a wand to access the information from each display and a card of a soldier who fought in World War 1. The centre had a beautiful water display that scrolled through the names of all the soldiers that fought in World War 1 and there was all so an interactive table that displayed the information about the ship your soldier was shipped out on and the history of that ship. After our tour we utilised the barbeque area and a few of the students, Tuhiwai McRoberts and Conor Rego volunteered to do the cooking of the sausages for our lunch. After lunch our final stop was up to the lookout to the memorial and then home. Great day and there was comments by the ANZAC staff on how polite and well behaved all the students were. Well done Year 9’s!

Katanning Senior High School Vision—Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership

On Tuesday 7 May five lucky Clontarf students travelled to Collie for a worksite visit at Premier Coal. The Katanning boys joined academies from Newton Moore Senior High School, Gilmore College and Coodanup Community College and also a small group of students from Collie Senior High School. The first part of the visit was a tour of the pits and the rather large machinery that works in them. This was facilitated by a number of aboriginal workers in the mine. The second tour was of the workshop where we were told about the amount of maintenance required on the machinery and the unbelievable fuel bill they pay per year. A brief discussion followed regarding apprenticeships and the different positions available within the mine. The boys were surprised at how many opportunities were available and hopefully it sparked an interest.

STUDENT SERVICES

Last year, as part of our student break time engagement program, our lovely Chaplain Leanne borrowed a giant Connect Four set from her neighbour, Mr Norm Baker, and held a competition at lunch time. This was very successful and enjoyed by many students.

The Student Services team thought that having our own sets would be a great idea, so we could hold a Connect Four Challenge or have the sets on the library lawn for students to have use at their leisure.

The P&C kindly donated the money for two sets and last week Mr Baker delivered the two giant Connect Four Sets to our school with Mrs Carmen Anderson, our P&C President, on hand to receive them.

The Student Services team would like to thank Mr Baker for making and delivering them, as well as the Katanning Senior High School P&C Association for their kind donation.

I’m sure students will get much use out of them!

Term 1 Good Standing Reward

The Good Standing Policy acknowledges and rewards exemplary behaviour, attendance and work ethic. It also emphasises the importance of taking responsibility for negative choices students may make which ultimately affects their learning and the learning of others.

Last term, the students who had maintained their Good Standing were invited to a Pizza Party held on the lawn area behind room 17. The Good Standing celebrations started with the Year 11 and 12 students on Wednesday 10 April followed by the Year 9 and 10 students on Thursday and finishing with the Year 7 and 8 students on the last day of Term 1.

The students enjoyed a Bohemian style lunch, in glorious weather with delicious pizzas supplied by JB’s Quality Meats.

We would like to sincerely thank the Beeck family for their support to our school, and the lovely ladies in Home Economics who helped with the cooking and cutting of the pizzas, and endured disruption to their day.

Influenza Influenza, or the ‘flu’ is caused by an influenza virus. It is spread through the air when someone coughs, sneezes or talks. It is also spread by touching something that has the virus on it and then touching your nose, eyes or mouth. Common symptoms include sore throat, cough, fever, headache, chills, tiredness and muscle aches. People with the flu should rest and drink plenty of fluid. Use paracetamol in recommended doses if necessary - but do not give children any medication containing aspirin. Be sure to keep your child home from school while he or she is sick. If you require school work for your child contact the school to prepare some for you to collect. The best way to prevent flu from spreading is by washing your hands regularly and after coughing, sneezing or blowing your nose. Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information, contact your GP or local Immunisation Clinic. Why should I consider having my child vaccinated against the flu? The National Health and Medical Research Council, Australia's peak body for health advice, recommends annual vaccination for anyone six months of age or older who wants to reduce their chances of becoming ill with the flu. Annual flu vaccination is strongly recommended for anyone six months of age or older with a medical condition that places them at higher risk of severe illness from flu. Children and adults with heart, lung or kidney disease or a weakened immune system, are eligible for free flu vaccine through the National Immunisation Program. Children without underlying medical conditions who become infected with flu can also develop serious illnesses. Flu can cause high fever and pneumonia, and make existing medical conditions worse. Flu can also cause convulsions and diarrhoea in children. Influenza viruses are always changing. Each year scientists try to match the strains of influenza viruses in the vaccine to those most likely to cause flu illnesses that year. It takes up to two weeks for protection to develop after vaccination against flu and protection lasts about a year. The seasonal flu vaccine is available on prescription or via GP and immunisation clinics and is provided free for certain groups. Flu vaccines are available prior to winter starting. For more information visit healthywa.wa.gov.au/immunisation or contact your GP or Katanning Immunisation Clinic at 0982 6278.
