Katanning Senior High School Vision—Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership

I have been appointed as Acting Principal for a short time and during my first two weeks at Katanning SHS I have been impressed by the friendliness of the students. It is evident during my time in the school that Katanning SHS provides lots of opportunities and experiences for our students. Our Vocational and Education (VET) program goes from strength to strength. Congratulations to students who have completed certificate courses and have already qualified for university entrance, secured employment or apprenticeships. Many ATAR students have already completed exams and our Year 11 exams have commenced this week. Athletics Carnival I would like to congratulate everyone who contributed to a very successful athletics carnival especially Mr Treloar and his team for their organisation and passion. It was great to see the increased number of student participants. Ten records were broken during the carnival. All trophy winners were acknowledged at our assembly last Friday. Congratulations to those students! I was also impressed by both the sportsmanship and competitive spirit shown by our students. Thank you to members of the P & C for organising a sausage sizzle and also providing drinks to help keep students hydrated during a very warm day. School Assembly To mark our observance of Remembrance Day, students from the Katanning SHS Australian Army Cadet Corps provided a respectful acknowledgement as our students observed one minute’s silence in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.

Attendance Regular student attendance at our school has improved considerably this year. Congratulations to the 17 students who were acknowledged during our assembly for achieving 100% attendance in term three. It is important that all students continue to attend school on a regular basis and work towards completing all assessments by the end of the school year.

Royal Flying Doctor Service Mrs Malik and the Year 11 students in the Children, Family and Community class have made a wonderful quilt that that was provided to the local RFDS committee as a prize for their annual raffle. Bush Ranger Cadets Our Bush Rangers led by the Unit Leader Miss Watson together with Mr Prosser, Ms Muir, Mrs Whitehouse and Mrs Hiddlestone enjoyed a fun filled weekend at Bremer Bay. Clontarf Football Academy Our girls and boys appreciated the opportunity to play against Narrogin SHS recently. Whilst the boys had a great win, unfortunately our girls lost to their opponents. Nevertheless it was great to see that both games whilst competitive were played in good spirit. Well done to all our staff and students who contributed to the success of various above activities. Your support for our students and our school is very much appreciated and we continually see the positive results from our students. Congratulations goes to former student and school board member Zia Gul Sultani who has been selected

as one of 5 Finalists competing for the Young Peoples Medal as part of the 2017 Australian Human

Rights awards. The finals will be held in Sydney on Friday 8 December 2017.

Certificate I & II Sport & Recreation

Gym Build – Boxing Room

The Year 11 Certificate I Sport and Recreation have recently been completing a makeover of the KSHS Fitness Facility located on the former Residential College site.

The training facility consists of weights machines, cardio equipment and free weights which are used extensively in specialised programs within the Health and Physical Education Department.

As well as maintaining the current facilities, Certificate Sport & Recreation students have been responsible for the planning of and installation of a cardio boxing room. New equipment including speedballs, floor to ceiling balls and traditional boxing bags have been mounted along with the zoning of a ‘Partner Workout’ area where students can develop cardio fitness using mitts and focus pads.

We look forward to the further expansion of this facility with the introduction of the LEAD program in 2018.

Monday 23 October dawned and it looked like it was going to be a nice day for waterslides, rollercoasters, rampages, swinging boats, go-carts and a plethora of fun stuff. The annual Mystery Day for the Year 12 leavers had finally arrived and we were off to Adventure World. The year 12 students were quite excited and we had music all the way to Perth. Other than that the bus trip was pretty uneventful. We arrived at Adventure World and after everybody got settled the rush was on. The Abyss Rollercoaster was the first port of call for almost everybody. The speed slides were also a hotly contested area of fun. There were several races down the double slide as well as the six way slide and challenges being thrown about willy-nilly. Mrs Anderson was very entertaining on the Kraken waterslide. All too soon it was time to pack up and head home. After a final ride on the Abyss and Kraken we all headed to the bus. A short stop at McDonalds in Armadale, saw everybody fed and ready for the return to Katanning. Thank you Mrs Anderson and Mr Dark for accompanying myself and the Year 12 students to the 2017 Mystery Day. Mr Frank Gaudin Senior School Program Coordinator

WADJEMUP CUP

Year 9 & 10 Specialised

Four Katanning Clontarf lads Marley, Dionte, Reece and Errol made the trip to Rottnest Island for the 2017 Wadjemup Cup. They were greeted by Aboriginal Elders who performed Welcome to Country, a Smoking Ceremony and a Cultural Heritage Tour which was one of the highlights of the trip.

The boys then headed to the Barracks to unpack and settle into the accommodation for the next two nights. After tea the lads did an Amazing Race, which was a race around the island with ten different games where they had to compete before they headed to the next station. The boys had a great time and enjoyed all the games.

With an early wakeup call and breakfast the lads headed to the oval to start a full day of playing football. We joined the South West Academy to form the football team called “The Quokkas”. There where 15 Clontarf Academies from around the south of WA which made up the five combined football teams. All games were played in good spirit with a hard and fast approach. The lads applied themselves all day without fuss.

After the football the boys headed down to the beach for a well-earned paddle. The day ended with a movie, popcorn and drink. It didn’t take long for the lads to fall asleep back at the barracks. With a trip back on the ferry and a long drive home, the lads knew that they had a big weekend.

GYM

Katanning Senior High School is fortunate to have a fully equipped fitness centre.

Our year 9 and 10 Specialised Physical Education students have undergone 10

week fitness programs designed to improve muscular strength, cardiorespiratory

endurance, and muscular endurance. The students have gained a strong

understanding of gym programming, gaining the skills required to become self-

managing athletes. The program incorporated before

and after program fitness testing to track the progress

made by the students. Included in the battery of fitness

tests were the beep test, plank test, vertical jump, standing long jump, sit and

reach among others. Some of our higher performing students have earned a

position on our record board which will be carried over for years to come.

The 2017 Katanning Senior High School Athletics Carnival took place on Thursday, 9 November. Students from years 7-11 competed in track and field events in warm conditions at Quatermaine Oval, vying for both individual championship and house points. Throughout the competition 10 individual records were broken including the Year 10 Girls Shot Put record which had previously been recorded back in 1979. At the conclusion of the event Strathglen was victorious as champion house, with ten individual champions and 1088 points. A big thankyou to all staff and student helpers involved in the set-up, event staffing and pack up of equipment, without your tremendous effort the day would not be possible. Finally, well done to the 200 students who participated in fine spirit throughout the day. Team HPE

This year at the Katanning show students and staff entered a plethora of entries and won many of the classes both school sections and open sections. There were so many entries placed by the school, for example at least 50 entries in art and well over 70 entries for photography.

The Katanning Agriculture Show is an event that is supported, encouraged and looked forward to by both staff and students at this school. Our practical areas of study all put in entries – Visual arts, Photography, Woodwork, Home Economics and Inclusive learning. This is a great example of our schools commitment to supporting our community in Katanning.

The year 10 Specialised Physical Education students enjoyed a term of

learning the intricate art of golf. After honing their skills on the school

oval using modified equipment, they were fortunate to spend several

lessons at the Katanning Country Club utilising the driving range and

course. For some this was the first time playing golf, and while

frustrating at times, our specialised students demonstrated dedication

and resilience, two key qualities in any good golfer. The golf unit added

to the term spent completing archery and darts, adding to their

repertoire of target/recreation based games.

Katanning Senior High School Vision—Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Leadership

On Tuesday 31 October Ms Steed, Mr Woods and myself set off on a return trip to UWA with 50 very excited students from the Year 7 and 8 ACE Maths and English classes. Attendance on the excursion was fantastic – there were literally only 3 spare seats on the bus!

Upon arrival at UWA students were separated into year groups; the Year 7’s went to crack the Peacock Mystery and the Year 8’s went to complete a campus challenge. After morning tea they swapped sessions.

The Campus Challenge involved students using clues to find places around the campus and answering a question about it. They had to take a group photo at each place and also with any statues they found on the way. Incorporated into the challenge was a survey – our students had to stop University students randomly and ask them their name and details about what they were studying. It was a fantastic task as we got to see a lot of the campus, which is absolutely stunning; lots of beautiful grassy areas and the most magnificent trees – they look like they belong in a magic forest. We actually even found a peacock! It was very tiring though as the day was quite hot.

The Peacock Mystery was completed indoors in one of the Engineering buildings. Students were shown a news report detailing the disappearance of one of the peacocks from the UWA campus. They were then given the challenge of solving the mystery using a box of evidence; including psychological profiles of suspects, physical evidence etc. Safe to say that students were engaged and they caught the bad guy – which was actually a woman called Arabella.

We had a quick look through some accommodation units available for students to stay in if they attend UWA. There were some older rooms where students had to use a shared bathroom and kitchen.

These rooms are allocated primarily to first year students so that they can’t hide in their dorm all the time; they have to get out and about to do things and make friends along the way. There were other self-contained rooms for older students who needed to focus more intently on their studies rather than socialising. Both options had cleaning and some food provided. It sounded pretty good to me for around $350 a week; I was tempted to enrol myself!

After all this activity we had lunch in Uni Hall. It was burger day, so we could make our own burgers, or have other things on offer like pasta, meats and salads. There were two highlights for the students; firstly, the self-serve soft drink machine where they could top up their drink as often as they liked; and secondly, the soft serve ice-cream machine which was also self-service! Needless to say that the line was long and kept filling up.

While at Uni Hall a past student, Steven Paini, who is currently on a full scholarship, came to see me. He had been playing pool in the games room when he saw our students walk past and thought the uniform looked familiar. He went and put his leaver’s jumper on and came to see what we were doing at UWA. It was so nice to see a former student and hear about all the amazing things they are up to. Steven is studying both Physics and Engineering and is looking forward to taking on the role of inter-University events coordinator next year. I am not 100% sure what the role entails but I think it involves organising events and parties.

Back on the bus we were all pretty exhausted after running around campus. We hit the road back to Katanning and arrived pretty much on time. Most students displayed fantastic behaviour on the day. Hopefully next year we can swap things up a bit and take the combined year groups to visit a different Uni, so that by the time they need to decide which Uni they want to attend they have a good idea of what to expect and which they like best.

Thanks to our bus driver William, Ms Steed and Mr Woods for coming on the excursion and to the students who attended. I hope you all enjoyed the trip!

The Schools Poetry and Short Story Competition for 2017 Write4Fun held its annual School Writing Competition in which all Australian school students from Pre Primary to grade 12 could enter a poem or short story to win prizes of up to $1000 First Prize ($500 to the school, $500 to the student) and a choice of a PS4, XboxOne, iPad, etc. This year Katanning Senior High School had two students make it through to the final round: Jaylen Anyon and Malcolm Guy. Both students are in the Year 8 ACE program and received an Achievement Award in recognition of successfully making it into the finals. Their work will also be published in the book Write Here Write Now – ISBN 978 0 9954050 1 1. Jaylen wrote a military poem and Malcolm submitted a poem he wrote for English class titled Chuchundra the Muskrat, based off a character from Rudyard Kipling’s story, Rikki Tikki Tavi. We are extremely proud of these students and wish to acknowledge their achievement. Well done!

Chuchundra the Muskrat By: Malcolm Guy

Chitter, Chatter, Chuchundra. His empathy is Villainous. Unless You Hear his Cheep! Cheep! You would think he was cute and brave. Chunchundra whimpers, “Don’t kill me!” His self-righteousness is like a snake. Unrealistically, he is heartbroken. Notorious is what he is and there is no changing that! Denying himself, he has enough spirit to move to the centre of the room. Ridiculously he weeps like a lunatic while creeping along a wall at night. Above all, he is Ludicrous.

ALBANY BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

This term Katanning Senior High School took 2 teams of students (with student coaches and student umpires) to Albany for the 2017 Great Southern Secondary Schools Basketball Tournament, the biggest basketball tournament outside the metropolitan area. The girls played really well despite only having 1 sub, the won their 1st and 3rd games but lost their 2nd game which put them into the grand final which they unfortunately lost. The boys had a full team of 8 but struggled with the level of competition. They lost 3 games and drew 1. Overall the HPE team were very happy with how all the students conducted themselves both on the court and as spectators. A big thankyou and well done goes to Mr Treloars Cert 2 in Sport and Recreation students; Tanisha Fraser, Biru Turiya, Sujjad Fayazi, Shaun Hodgson and Joshua Pinney for umpiring and coaching. BUSH RANGERS

At the end of week 5 the Bush Ranger Cadets went on camp to Bremer Bay. Friday afternoon we had a short walk along the beach after setting up our tents and on Saturday we had a full day at Fisheries Beach; fishing, swimming, kayaking, snorkelling and exploring.

We caught three eating-size-fish, a couple of smaller ones which we released and a couple of almost-catches. A few people tried fishing from the kayaks which was fun.

The weather was lovely but many of us were reminded of the importance of putting on plenty of sunscreen. On Sunday we went for a walk along the estuary and then to the historical museum which has a fascinating collection of old cars, motorbikes, tractors, musical instruments, tools, toys and much more. We also had a look at the wind turbine which supplies 40% of Bremer Bay’s power.

I would like to thank all the Leaders and Cadets for helping to make it a fun camp. Miss Sarah Watson Unit Leader

Winners Are Grinners! Two of our students from Inclusive Learning received first and second prizes in the 126th Katanning Landcare Agricultural Show! Our students submitted entries and worked hard to lodge their items on time. This year Colt entered rock cakes in the cooking category. As part of the life skills program practised in the Education Support Unit, cooking is one of many skills encouraged with our students and Colt is no exception. He is an enthusiastic participant and a very eager taste tester in the kitchen. Colt measures the required ingredients, stirs, mixes and spoons small portions onto the baking pan with assistance from Mrs Terri Whiteaker. Colt practises safe kitchen rules by using oven mitts when opening the door of the hot oven. He helped Mrs Rita Mills wash dishes, but there was more water on the floor than in the sink! After all that hard work in the kitchen, Colt won 1st prize in the Men’s section! At the end of the day Colt happily smiles and gets to enjoy his yummy rock cakes! Congratulations Colt for your first prize award winning rock cakes!

Taleeah entered two categories this year. Her art work titled “About Me” received the blue ribbon 1st prize! She expressed her artistic skills in a variety of mediums in an abstract collage. Photographs of Taleeah in a variety of poses were then cut out and incorporated in the artwork along with the use of water colour paints and textures such as paperbark, shells, tinsel, straw, leaves and twigs to make her beach themed artwork come to life! Her second category won 2nd prize! This time Taleeah used her sewing skills to design and create a cushion in the shape of an ear. The reason for this project was due to Taleeah recently having had an implant in her ear canal to assist with her hearing. Taleeah felt very strongly about this and with the support of Mrs Barb Anderson and Ms Kayla Matla Taleeah’s ear cushion became a reality. Once completed the ear cushion was mounted upon a board for display with added attachments of an ear cuff and a dangling earring.

Well done to ALL KSHS students for submitting entries in the Katanning Show and supporting community involvement in our school. Winning isn’t everything, SUCCESS is HARD WORK and DETERMINATION! Inclusive Learning Team

YEAR 9 DRAMA PERFORMANCE

SCHOOL NURSE

During Week 4 the year 9 Drama Class performed the play “Frankenstein Slept Here” three times at the Katanning Town Hall. The play was on for Halloween evening, as well Friday 3 November and Saturday 4 November, in conjunction with two other one act plays by the Katanning Dramatic Society Kids and Youth. Our students did a fabulous job of presenting to an audience and got lots of laughs (in all the right places) for their portrayal of the quirky characters and silly situations. They put in a lot of effort to learn their lines and prepare their characters and the hard work paid off. Congratulations to all the students who participated and a special thank you to Tackly Naung who filled in when an original cast member couldn’t make a performance. Miss Sarah Watson Drama teacher

Anxiety – how to help your child

All children experience anxious feelings as part of their normal childhood development. Some anxious feelings include fear, agitation, nervousness, worry and apprehension. Some children find it harder to get these feelings under control and may experience anxiety more intensely and more often than others. Anxiety is when the level of fear or worry about something is out of proportion to the level of risk or danger. Thinking about the situation makes them more worried and tense. If your child is experiencing anxiety try to:

Acknowledge your child’s fear – don’t dismiss or ignore it. Gently encourage them to do things they’re anxious about, but don’t push them to face

situations they’re not yet ready to face. Wait until they actually get anxious before you step in to help Praise him for doing something they’re anxious about, rather than criticising them for being

afraid. Avoid labeling your child as ‘shy’ or ‘anxious’.

Your child might need some extra support if their anxiety stops them from doing the things they want to do or interferes with their friendships, school work or family life. If you are worried about your child, contact your local Community Health Nurse, School Psychologist or General Practitioner. For more information about anxiety in children go to www.raisingchildren.net.au or www.healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au

LEAD PROGRAM

HEALTH EDUCATION- HEALTH EXPO

Our year 10 Health students were responsible for the set up and running of the Katanning Senior High School Health Expo. Topics included drug education, alcohol education, driver education, resiliency, fitness and nutrition. Our students created posters, decorations, pamphlets, and designed fun interactive activities. The Health Expo provided students with a real world appreciation of the Health Promotion Industry. Along with the student stalls, several external agencies were generous enough to give their time and resources to attend the event.

As a Health and Physical Education department we were blown away by the enthusiasm and commitment from our year 10 students. They put a significant amount of effort in to ensure that their stalls were engaging and informative. It was amazing to see a range of both local and Perth based agencies support the KSHS Health Expo.

In 2018 Katanning Senior High School will be introducing the L.E.A.D (LEAD) program to year 9 and 10. The LEAD program will be an extension program within the HPE learning area to promote the development of the school’s top athletes. Through the streaming of HPE classes in year 9 and 10, we will be creating an environment that promotes leadership, excellence, athleticism and dedication, the four cornerstones of the program. Students within the program will have the opportunity to engage in Physical Education, Health Education, Strength and Conditioning and Physical Education Studies Theory surrounded by like students. The program will also provide greater support for students who have typically struggled or disengaged from Physical Education.

Students within the program will engage in sporting activities

within the community on a regular basis. These include but

are not limited to, squash, tennis, golf, water polo and pool.

These students will be representing the School, as such,

there will be a behaviour and attendance requirement placed

on students within the LEAD program. Opportunities to

engage in off-site sport are a privilege that students will need

to earn through a trial period. This trial period will consist of

an application form, fitness testing, behaviour checks and

potential interview requirement.

Goal setting Over October we talked about goal setting. The students learned about what goals are and how to set them. I decided a great way to demonstrate this was to ‘run a marathon’ over the month. The students and I looked at the overall goal of running 42km and then broke that down into more achievable goals that could be tackled every day. We looked at how to approach setbacks and plan for interruptions.

Without even knowing it we set ourselves goals every day. The little ones are easy to achieve and don’t often take much thought. They can be passing a level on Mario Cart, getting our homework done in time so we can watch a show or just beating your brother home from school so you can eat the last muffin. But the bigger ones are harder to understand, set and achieve. With the help of the tutors the students learnt about setting iSMART goals and then set their own which they could work towards achieving. Some were long term and others more short term. A few that were based on the athletics carnival we even achieved!

Having goals helps us to see that bigger picture and motivates us to move towards an end point. Goals differ from person to person as do values. But one thing is for sure “Setting goals is the first step in turning dreams into reality.

Halloween If you haven’t picked it up before, I really like to engage the students in different activities that allow them to learn different skills in a new way. With Halloween falling on a tutoring day I snatched the opportunity to challenge the student’s makeup skills. We switched literacy warm ups and capital city challenges for special effects make up- and the boys loved it!

The students paired up and created some gory wounds using PVA glue, tissues, foundation, eye shadow/blush and fake blood. Students who didn’t attend the session that night were very jealous they missed out on such a cool activity.

Pop up business. During week 6 the students operated a pop up business called The Dream Wash. In place of normal tutoring students ran a car wash for staff. Students started working on the mini project during week 5 researching start-up costs, profit margins and promotion. This project allowed the students to learn about entrepreneurship. As with life those that work the hardest will reap the reward. Although not dealing in legal currency the students split the profits between them and will be able to redeem this in our program reward system.
