“Too Many Bills, too Little Money”

It seems that a lot of our stress is caused by our perception that we have ‘Too many Bills and too

little Money’. Money issues are one of the leading causes of stress in America. When we feel we do

not have enough money or we have too many bills, we become irritable. It affects our relationships,

and it affects decisions we make. In short, we get stressed out when we feel we have too many bills

and too little money.

How do we overcome the stresses that too many bills and too little money cause? To overcome this

mentality and to eventually reduce the stress that is being caused by it, is not an overnight process.

We didn’t get into this situation overnight, and it will require some change in us if we are to overcome

these stresses and get to a point of enjoying the peace and contentment that come from the Lord.

The first step we need to take is to focus on the Lord and His Word. In our spiritual lives, if we are

continuing to focus on worldly things instead of focusing on the Lord and His word, that is going to

affect how we live, even if it is not what we intend for our lives.

When we allow the world’s values and philosophies to grab our attention and keep our focus, we are

in danger of stumbling and being taken captive. We have got to focus on the Lord and His Word, so

we can be built up and strengthened in the faith. Otherwise we are going to begin believing that

money really does provide a life without stress.

Matthew 6:22-23 says, "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are good, your whole body will

be full of light. But if your eyes are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light

within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!

(continued from page 1) For most of us, the problem we face is not too little

money, although it seems like it. The problem we

have is a lifestyle that creates too many bills. There

are still many of us who have fallen prey to “hollow

and deceptive philosophies” and created our own

financial hardships by the pursuing of a lifestyle

that is beyond our ability, believing that buying

more stuff will make us happy. Bad spiritual eyes

lead you into the darkness.

I pray that the gospel according to Mathew 6:19-21

would inspire you, "Do not store up for yourselves

treasures on earth, where moths and rust destroy,

and where thieves break in and steal. But store up

for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths

and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not

break in and steal. For where your treasure is,

there your heart will be also.

The church is the place where we can find help in

the midst of those financial hardships. When you

think you don’t need the church and cut yourself off

from the church and face a financial hardship, you

will find that you have cut yourself off from the very

help that God intended to give you during those

times.

Your new life style will say, “Too much money, too

few bills.” May the Lord open your spiritual eyes

and strengthen you and your financial life!

Where Two Are GatheredWhere Two Are GatheredWhere Two Are GatheredWhere Two Are Gathered

My Mama Cat is more than beautiful. She has a special talent. Every time I kneel in prayer Mama Cat appears by my side to place a paw on my hands and mew along quietly. Even if I’m in another room silently praying, she somehow knows and comes running.

Recently some friends joined me for a prayer meet-ing. Mama Cat prowled around our feet. She stopped to rub up against each one of us, adding her prayers to ours. How blessed I am never to have to pray alone.

"An Attitude of Gratitude"

By Diane Collier (used by permission)

Dare I say, we all probably need an atti-tude adjustment. Circumstances and situations produce change in our life that often times brings us to our knees. But therein lies the choice, do we sit and sulk, or stand and fight. Do we run from our problems or meet them head on, trust-ing Jesus to make a way? Yes, life comes at us hard but we have the strength of our faith to see us through and give us confidence, not in our-selves, but in what Jesus can do, when we let go and trust Him.

Evelyn Christenson wrote a little book years ago titled, "Lord, Change Me!" That is my prayer tonight as I wrestle with things in my life that need change. Perhaps this is at the center of all change when each one of us individually realizes that if change is to take place in our life, it must first begin in us.

ACCEPTING THE CHALLENGE TO CHANGE.

Let me ask you as question, which will take us to the heart of the matter. How many times have you heard a sermon or witnessed change in a life, and said, I know someone who really needs to hear this? This is the problem we find in rec-ognizing the challenge in life to change. If we are busy trying to change someone else, we are way off track. When we finally are able to realize that change must first begin in us, then we can move forward, in faith. But before we can make that first step of faith we must understand that we can only change, when we say as the title of this book, "Lord! Change Me!"

(continued) —>

(cont) Zechariah 3:1-4; "And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him. And the Lord said unto Satan, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan; even the Lord that hath chosen Jerusa-lem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire? Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel. And He answered and spake unto those that stood before him, saying, “Take away the filthy garments from him.” And unto him he said, “”Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, AND I WILL CLOTHE THEE WITH CHANGE OF RAIMENT."

Here God is bringing us to the heart of the matter. A change of attitude can only come when God strips us of the filthy garments of sin, and brings change into our life, a sure and positive change. A change that will bring gratitude and praise for God and God alone. ■

“Change my heart, O Lord, make it more like Thee giving me an attitude of gratitude and

set my spirit free.”

JUNE UM MEN’S MEETING

The next United Methodist Men’s breakfast will be on June 12, 2010 at IHOP in San Marcos on Restaurant Row. All men who wish to have fel-lowship with other Christian men are welcome. Bring a friend or neighbor!

Please Read this. It has to do with PRAYER. The reason I ask you to read it is because many people say to me, "I didn't know that there was a prayer time every Sun-day morning from 9:45 to 10:00." Well... it is printed in the Sunday Bulletin every SUNDAY morning. The Prayer Room is open for

you to come and pray by yourself, or to have someone pray for you. So, come to church five, ten or fifteen minutes early and have a time of prayer... in of all places… the PRAYER ROOM. We all have something to pray about; our own lives, our family, the church. It can be real live communica-tion with God. See you there, in the name of Jesus. I would also remind you that our Church has what is called a PRAYER CHAIN. What is that? It is a group of people who desire and are willing to pray for those in need. The Chain is a list of people who are notified of the prayer needs, and then spend time in prayer for the person, the need, or the event. Myrna Baker heads up the E-Mail Chain, and Lorene Mendenhall heads up the Telephone Chain. You call one, or both of them, and they pass on the person's name and cir-cumstances to be prayed for, in the name, power and love of Jesus. (This is a new type of "Chain Gang.") Call and be part of an important team, as the family of God. You may also call the office at (760) 744-0170 and tell Jean your prayer needs, she will let Pastor Tae, Myrna and Lorene know. ■ Pastor Dave Walker

Assignment

Is there anything I can do for you? I politely inquire of my distressed friends, fancying the answer is no. Standing by the cross of Jesus I conjecture, there is nothing that can be done for His comfort at this late date. No last request He might address to me. Instead He says behold my mother, my sister and my brother, all yours. Take care of them for me. Thomas John Carlisle

HOW TO PLAN YOUR FUTURE IN YOUR WILL

The federal government encourages gifts and bequests to the church by allowing an unlimited

tax-deductible charitable donation.

To make a bequest to San Marcos UMC, the following language will be helpful to your lawyer:

“I give, devise and bequest to San Marcos UMC, located at 800 W. Mission Rd.,

San Marcos, CA 92069 the sum of _________ (or otherwise describe the gift or specify

a percentage of the estate) as a Mission Legacy Gift”

Here are five possible ways you can make a Mission Legacy Bequest:

When God Whispers Your NameWhen God Whispers Your NameWhen God Whispers Your NameWhen God Whispers Your Name

• Sometimes the most godly thing we can do is take a day off.

• Faith in the future begets power in the present.

• No one is useless to God. No one.

• Conflict is inevitable, but combat is op-tional.

• You will never forgive anyone more than God has already forgiven you.

• Succeed in what matters.

• You’ll regret opening your mouth. You’ll rarely regret keeping it shut.

• To see sin without grace is despair. To see grace without sin is arrogance. To see them in tandem is conversion.

• Faith is the grit in the soul that puts the dare into dreams.

• God doesn’t keep a clock.

• Never underestimate a gesture of affection.

• When Jesus went home, He left the front door open.

• Don’t ask God to do what you want . Ask God to do what is right.

• Nails didn’t hold God to the cross. Love did.

• You’ll give up on yourself before God will.

• Know answered prayer when you see it, and don’t give up when you don’t.

• Flattery is fancy dishonesty.

• The right heart with the wrong creed is better than the right creed with the wrong heart.

• We treat others as we perceive God is treat-ing us. ■

Update from our missionary family in Malawi, Africa

The Jensen family are doing good work in Malawi where they have lived for 10 years. Perry is a doc-tor who works in a new clinic called "Thandizo” which is the word for "help" in Chichewa and help they give to patients who come with TB, AIDS and other infections. The clinic has 15 beds and is a godsend to people who mostly live in very poor cir-cumstances. The family includes Brenda, wife and mother, who teaches Bible studies, plays the keyboard at wor-ship services and is interviewing AIDS patient to write down their stories. The youngest child Olivia is a cute little adopted girl from Malawi with a charming smile missing her 2 front teeth. Erin is 12 and a great swimmer, while Nate is 17, a junior in high school, and checking out colleges in America. They are a wonderful family who love their adopted country while serving as missionaries from the Methodist Church. I am glad that we were able to send $500 to support their work.■ Elsa Singh

A story we can all identify with.

Once I prayed for patience. The next day my washing machine broke down, leav-ing me with 3 dozen dirty diapers. Then, so help me, the dryer quit working 5 min-utes after a monsoon started. That day I was reminded that God doesn't always answer prayer as we expect. Sometimes when we pray for a certain virtue - like patience - God does not necessarily send it to us in a package ready for instant use. We are much more likely to be put in a situation where we are given the op-portunity to develop that virtue. I am more patient today than I was before I washed 36 diapers by hand in a bathtub and hung them to dry from the chandeliers.■ Sue Monk Kidd Submitted by Elsa Singh

Sunday Evening Bible Study

We have had a great time studying the Gospel According to Matthew. We have been blessed with good fellowship and insight into God's Word. The first two Sunday evenings of June , June 6 and 11, we will be studying the letter of I John. This Letter deals with the fantastic love of God in Jesus Christ, and the sinful nature of man that demands that we walk in the Light of God. Come and join us at 6:30 Sunday eve-nings for a great time together. Dave Walker, teacher

THE PERSON DOWN THE ROAD

In thirty, forty, or fifty years you will meet

a person down the road. Whether that someone

is kind and gentle or selfish and demanding de-

pends on what you do today. If you live only in

terms of what you can get out of life, this person

will be crabby, self-centered, and spiteful. But if

you open your life to others and live as a giver,

this person will be kind, open, and generous.

This somebody whom you will meet

down the road someday is you. The person you

will be tomorrow depends on the life you live

today. Every day, in every way, you are becom-

ing more and more like yourself. Make sure the

person you are becoming is someone you will

enjoy being around.

Update from the Interfaith Shelter Network

Representatives from the 7 North County churches which support the rotational shelter every year were at the wrap up meeting last month. We learned that 36 people were shel-tered in North County for a total of 1,018 nights. We are part of a 120 congregation Network in 7 areas of San Diego County. Altogether, we have all served 250 people for a total of over 7,600 nights this season. The Network has been work-ing for 23 years and served a total of 7,500 peo-ple for a total of 184.000 nights - without having to build shelters or hire staff. That is an awe-some accomplishment. It's a lot of work but it's God's work and He never promised us that it would be easy.■

OMISSIONS

It is not so much the things I do that cause me

to regret. It’s the little things I leave undone,

the things that I forget. It’s words I fail to utter,

the songs I fail to sing, the letters I forgot to

write, that may great comfort bring. It’s the little

acts of kindness, the joy I fail to give, the

smiles I fail to scatter, as day by day I live. It’s

the sick I fail to visit, flowers I fail to send, it’s

the hand I fail to offer unto a fallen friend. It’s

not so much the things I do that cause me to

regret. It’s the little things I leave undone, the

things that I forget.

Interfaith still needs help with their food pantry.

Canned and packaged soups, non-perishable canned & packaged dinners, rice, rice mixes, pasta and pasta mixes canned meats, baby food, baby formula, dry beans, peanut butter, jelly and canned vegetables. Please pick up extras to donate when you are shopping! Many have lost jobs and times are hard. Leave your donations in the Narthex and they will be transported to Interfaith!

WORTH

REMEMBERING

As soon as you can,

pay your debts.

As long as you can,

give the benefit of

the doubt.

As much as you can, give thanks. He’s already

given us more than we deserve

Pray all the time. If necessary, use words.

Sacrilege is to feel guilt for sins forgiven.

God forgets the past. Imitate Him.

Greed I’ve often regretted. Generosity—never.

Never miss a chance to read a child a story.

Pursue forgiveness, not innocence.

Be doubly kind to the people who bring your

food or park your car.

In buying a gift for your wife, practicality can be

more expensive than extravagance. ■

SUNBEAMS

There is incredible value in being of service to

others. I think if many of the people in therapy

offices were dragged out to put their finger in a

dike, or take up their place in a working line,

they would be relieved of terrible burdens.

- Elizabeth Berg

When we honestly ask ourselves which people in

our lives mean the most to us, we often find that it

is those who, instead of giving advice, solutions,

or cures, have chosen rather to share our pain

and touch our wounds with a warm and tender

hand. The friend who can be silent with us in a

moment of despair or confusion, who can stay

with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who

can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing,

and face with us the reality of our powerlessness,

that is a friend who cares.
